“The mills of the Gods grind slow but sure.”

Hey, George Herbert, I just used your “borrowed” quote in a Goodreads review about a comic book series. Your legacy is now complete, bro!

Is the destiny of every character in this series to be thrown under the proverbial bus? At his point, I’m going to put a check mark in the “YES” box.

Well said, Mr. Demon Guy. You have the knack for understatement.

This issue is the daisy chain of mayhem. Nobody can detach themselves from the madness. The Paradigm are chasing the Plutonian and the Plutonian’s arch-villain, Modeus. The Plutonian’s little buddy, Samsara has been revived and he and the Plutonian are visiting some of the Plutonian’s old foster families and proving the old adage, “you can’t (and shouldn’t) go home again”. The government is fed up with the whole super hero business and decides to conjure up Orian, Mr. Demon Guy to “rectify” the situtation.

Any volunteers?

And I’m not even going to bring up the warm and huggy goings on amongst the members of the Paradigm.

Bottom line: Mark Waid cranks ups the ante in this one, as the crap hits the fan and it seems everybody forgot to wear their poncho and galoshes. Good times!

Minor spoilery stuff for those that haven’t read up to this volume yet. What are you waitin’ for?

description

Finally. The U.S. Government has had enough of the Plutonian’s rampage and is stepping in to do something about it. Yep, the same guys that fucked up the economy, social security, and continue to try and dilute the Constitution to the point of irrelevance are on it. And they’re not gonna fuck this up. Turns out they have a very unique weapon on standby for just such an emergency. This isn’t going to end well.

description

Qubit gets his BDSM on and it actually leads to a little information as to what happened to Modeus before he went missing. Turns out Modeus might have actually earned that dangerous reputation, the clever shit. Certainly didn’t see that twist coming.

description

A new hero is born. “The Survivor” is here and what a douche-bag he is. Could be the cure is as bad as the disease in this case. Hysterical that the media was about as impressed as I was at his “coming out” party. Toolbox.

description

Gil and Bette finally have that sit down about allegations of her infidelity. I was wonderin’ how long Bette was gonna be able to put this one off. Nice guys finish last Gil. But there’s more to this than Bette just going on a trampage. She knows something you don’t know.

description

The Plutonian continues to impress with just how much of a malicious degenerate he really is. Yep, he’s hit an all-time low in this one kiddies. He’s takin’ to the handicapped. And how about those adoptive parents. Crazy shit.

description

I continue to enjoy this series more with each volume. Peter Krause’s artwork remains consistent and, while I won’t be seeking out other titles based solely on his work, it’s respectable. Waid ends this collection on a cool little cliffhanger. On to volume 4. This title’s got legs.

And now the military gets involved and makes everything worse. Plus, we find out Bette Noir's secrets with the Plutonian. My one pet peeve with this comic is that new characters are never introduced very well and half of them don't even got a name for several issues.

This was a really good volume. We get more of an insight into Tony and his childhood and we also get some interesting character developments from some of the Paradigm members. The writing and the story are both really strong. This comic feels so well thought out and put together. We even got a bit of a cliffhanger at the end! I would recommend this series.

The sad life story of the Plutonian continues to be told as he visits the people and places of his past while superhero group Paradigm deal with a new threat in the form of the demon Orian, a hunter from another dimension, summoned by the US government is a last ditch attempt to gain control of this mess. Also, Bette Noir reveals her secret and uncovers the key to defeating the Plutonian once and for all while Modeus’ location is finally revealed.

I was so impressed with the first volume of this series that I immediately bought the next four books, so convinced was I of its greatness and, having read the first three books now, I can confirm they are so very great. Mark Waid continues his fascinating character study of the Plutonian, giving the reader more insight and the character more depth as he relates the tragedies that dogged Tony (aka the Plutonian) throughout his life. Unwanted by terrified parents, Tony is passed from family to family, leaving in his wake unintentionally damaged people through his super strength. In one particularly heartbreaking scene Tony deals with an abusive foster father, revealing his super strength to his foster mother, while holding her hostage so she wouldn’t send him back to the orphanage, despite her fearful reaction to such awesome power. The close up of her frozen smile and the dialogue “I’d make her love me again” were so chilling.

The famous essay on Superman and the possibility of him making love with a human woman is addressed by Waid who finds a temporary way around the conundrum for his Superman-facsimile, while adding to Plutonian’s overall portrait: Bette Noir looks “deep in his eyes” and the reader sees wordless panels that close in on Tony’s face, revealing a terrible emptiness. At the same time it gives the Paradigm a foothold in defeating the seemingly undefeatable superhero.

This book is so well written, it’s crazy. Mark Waid is firing on all cylinders with this series and every plot strand is handled expertly with all story points converging perfectly. It’s a fantastic third book in the series, maybe the best third book in any comic book series I’ve read, and the pacing of the story doesn’t seem to be slowing at all, if anything it’s speeding up. “Irredeemable” is sheer brilliance showcasing a writer at the top of his game and fully inspired. When comics are this good, they are a joy to read.

Bullet Review:

Another great volume that peels back the layers about Plutonian and how he became what he was. We find out Bette Noir's big secret and the blood bath continues.

One small detail - isn't it weird how characters can vastly change in their appearance from page to page? I noticed this specifically with Bette Noir - in the beginning, she had a very 40's/50's vibe and now, she almost strikes me as more 90's Lois Lane as played by Teri Hatcher. Also, it's not exactly clear what her superpower is, other than "has strange guns" - not that it really matters IMO, just an interesting note.

Plutonian's excesses and crimes against humanity escalate with each volume, and more pieces of the puzzle are revealed to the reader. In this book, we get in the head of the young boy that Plutonian once was. His past is definitely a huge trigger for the future mental breakdown. It's terrible that such a physically powerful person could lose his grip on sanity, and this book depicts that horrible state of affairs.

We also learn about Bette Noir's connection with Plutonian. Bette made some mistakes in her relationship with Plutonian and she has to live with that fact. Too bad it added to his psychotic break. It's a lot of guilt to carry. But at least her interlude with Plutonian gives the Paradigm a potentially powerful asset to use against him.

There is a new adversary for the team to face in a government sponsored bounty hunter with a very demonic nature.

I didn't like the demonic bounty hunter part at all. It just rubbed me the wrong way. But overall, I am still captivated with this series, although it does leave my nerves feeling very raw. the good news is I can close the book and be grateful that it's just fiction.

I know, right? Long time, no see. You look great, by the way. Settle down. You know how this works. I’m not going to kill you.

Tony looks like he’s half African-American on the cover. What the heck?

This ends with a cliffhanger- Talk about a sitcom! What to expect in the next volume??

If I measure the greatness of a book by how much I want to read the next one, then this easily rates a five. It's getting better as the story, the backstory and the side-trips begin to put meaty flesh on the bones of the core story. I didn't think it would have the legs to run for this long, but now I'm beginning to see this is a marathon not just a sprint. I think I was fooled by the dash at the first issue.

What's even more impressive is that the preview for a new book called "The Unknown" is even more compelling than the Irredeemable story itself. How's that for a twofer? Devour this one as soon as you can.

Unfortunately, looking back on this series and the companion "Incorruptable", it's hard to imagine something I'm *less* interested in following than this storyline. It feels like Waid is losing steam even on this creation of his, and I can't say I have any interest in Vol 4. Perhaps if Incorruptable hadn't tarnished my view on his writing skills, I'd still be following this strongly.

This series just keeps delivering. We explore a little bit of Plutonian's life as a youngster in one of his foster homes, and the damage that did to him...
Also, the Paradigm group continues to fall apart as secrets are exposed, and new forces challenge for leadership.
Meanwhile the army unleashes a demon long thought gone to control the situation...
And Mobius the arch-enemy of the Plutonian reappears in the most unlikely of spots...

The series feels a little like it is treading water at this stage. The world is essentially destroyed and terrorized by the Plutonian. The characterization of both the Plutonian and his opposition is fairly dull. The bit that does stand out is the Bette Noir's story as she describes her affair with the Pultonian and that she might hold the secert to his defeat.

Another solid entry into the series.

This one isn't quite as gripping as Volume 2. Basically it picks up right after but slows down to give way to a new enemy as well as finding out some deep dark secrets. It's not that it's bad it's just not as exciting seeing our heroes try to survive against a insane maniac. I thought it was fun enough to get through but the overall pacing hurt it. a 3/5

This is so good, I forgot to write this review and I'm done with volume 4.

I'm going to blow through this whole series, and then I found the sequel, Incorruptible, on Humble Bundle already. I'm so excited I have all of this ahead of me.

Mark Waid - writer
Peter Krause - artist

5/5 stars

It appears that one of the Paradigm has the power to challenge the Plutonion, who flees temporarilly. The U.S. government, unsure of the situation and the accountability of the Paradigm, summon an extra-dimensional demon to capture the super heroes and deal with the Plutonion. Bette Noir's dark secret is revealed and more of the Plutonion's history is revealed. More awesome stuff from Waid and Krause.

Highly recommended.

Another very good volume, thanks in large part to back story, secrets, and tight characterization which underlie the volume.

Mind you, I haven’t started buying these books, even with how good they’ve been, because Boom keeps publishing them in overpriced, padded volumes with just 4 issues. Maybe someday when they’re released as digests or omnibuses.

The previous volume of Irredeemable showed one of the Plutonian's old teammates gain the power to fight him to a standstill. Renaming himself "The Survivor", the guy seems to be a cross between the Marvel family and the Green Lantern. Unfortunately, he's just as messed up as the Plutonian, demanding praise from a scared press corps at his victory press conference. One of the good things about this series is how the story shows the "Superman gone VERY bad" scenario would destabilize, oh, everything. The White House is missing a full third of itself and seems to be the only building left in Washington, and the U.S. government is being run by some military folks who take it upon themselves to summon a very nasty demon (a creature that may be Mxyzptlk to Plutonian's Superman if Mxy was a psychotic hunter that required a gruesome human sacrifice to come to Earth in the first place). Also, more background is given for why the Plutonian is obsessed with former teammate Bette Noir (three guesses given all the clues thus far). The volume ends with Plutonian finding his lobotomized sidekick alive, most of his former friends in custody.

Expected and telegraphed but still good.

So the big reveal and the main arc this book wss expected, it's been hinted for a while now and what transpired was expected, but it was still a good read.

World: Dark, grim and realistic art fits. The world building once again is great. Effortless and just enough to serve the story, I feel safe in the creative team's hand.

Story: Expected, it was hinted and I knew where this was going to go. So far the book had been offering little creative story surprises but it's so well written and paced that the story is engrossing. The stuff with Tony is also interesting but expected.

Characters: Bette was expected, her story was coming a mile away, as was Tony and his story. Tragic, yes, original, no. That being said the characters were wonderfully written being both deep and full of personal voice.

Expected but good read.

Onward to the next book!

an unstoppable man-god doesn't frighten the populous, yet vigilantes do? This story is proof that people are foolish. Beyond this revelation, this story left me with more questions than answers:
Why is the demon so weak, yet so feared? What is Gil? How the heck does the twin become exponentially powerful just from the absence of his sibling?

What was good? The family that has remained silent for decades out of fear of the man-god. Maybe if they had told someone about how Plutonian had basically veggetized their brother as a child, humans may have never allowed the hero to come about. Simple compassion & lacking greed also would've saved the world; if people were more understanding of the plague it is to be a superhero, maybe the hero would not have gone mad

This volume was ok, not great. There are some REALLY big reveals here, but there is also quite a bit of melodrama. There were some big fight scenes, the stakes were raised for everyone and it was the biggest cliff-hanger ending yet.
...All that being said; when it was over I didn't have the same need to rush out and grab the next one. I'm sure I'll read it soon enough, but this was just a little less inspiring for me than the first 2.

This is good shit that I’m just blitzing through. Irredeemable has been fantastic not just because The Plutonian is such a tragic character, but also because every other member of their superhero team, The Paradigm, is complex too. The character dynamics have been shifting since the start really and every few issues, a different hero takes the stage. Bette Noir is a great character, because you can hate her for what she did, but you can also understand why she made her decisions.

There are some stories you can't write about beloved intellectual property, lest it forever tarnish their image. That's why you won't see this kind of story with Superman (Red Son notwithstanding).

The Plutonian is a scary dude. He'll have dinner with loved ones, like everything is sunshine and rainbows, then snap when people react to him like the monster he is.

At this juncture, I do not despise the Plutonian. If you are the only one on the planet with powers to save the population from literally any calamity, when do you have time for yourself? Oh, and these people are ungrateful for - what - collateral damage? Maybe if people practiced empathy, they wouldn't be in this mess.

Anyway, Cary has made the shift to alpha dog and I can't wait to see him get pwned by the demon. That demon - surprisngly good sense of human humor.

Dope Trope
The Bad Guy Has the Answer

We've mostly seen Modeus in flashbacks-imagine some crafty Lex Luthor type who always has the Plutonian's number-but I'm ready for his big reveal. When ish hits the fan, you want that guy on your team.

When done well, this trope can develop more complex relationships between established characters so they aren't always on a combative collision course.

I'm a sucker for good guy/bad guy team ups. Everyone vs. the White Walkers in Game of Thrones. Loki and Thor. Goku and Frieza.

Give me more.

Well like the books title there is not a single redeemable individual in this book. Heroes are bad and bad guys are terrible. Such a depressing worldview and one that could make this the most depressing book series ever. Let’s see if Waid can keep this up or if redemption actually comes at some point. Revenge movies eventually run out of steam and accomplish nothing. A few more trades to go

The "Paradigm" (the new name for the Plutonian's former compatriots) have teamed up to defeat their former teammate, the Plutonian. In the previous volume, Cary defeated the Plutonian - briefly - before the Plutonian fled. Now he believes that he has what it takes to take him out forever (preferably with the help of The Paradigm, but alone if necessary). They still don't know where the Plutonian IS, though.

They manage to kidnap Encanta, whom they hope will be able to tell them something, and Qubit manages to torture some information out of her - a lead to where Mobeus (the Plutonian's nemesis) may be. Then, she mysteriously disappears (possibly to that same place).

Meanwhile, the Plutonian is on the run - he has no safe havens left - and is relying on the advice/guidance of his old friend Sam. Sam appears to have his own agenda (possibly vengeful), however.

The US government raises Orian (some kind of demon?) to help them capture The Paradigm (they feel - rightly - that the super hero element is WAY out of control). And he uses Bette Noir to lure them all to him. She reveals that she's had the secret (and the means) of how to stop the Plutonian all along (a piece of the candle that briefly makes him mortal - and thus able to be killed/harmed). This betrayal may divide the Paradigm, however, and it's not clear what will happen - except that the whole team is taken into custody by the US army. Yeah...good luck containing all of them.

The Plutonian really creeps me out. Yes, he's unbalanced now, but it seems like he's had a whole history of psychological issues that have led up to this point in his life. He wanted people to love him, but that has always eluded him. I don't think this is going to end well for anyone. *shudder*

This story is kinda losing steam, ... actually the writing is decent, but the artwork is weaker than the two previous books, and it suffers from it. With the right artist this series could be incredible, but, ...

I kinda wanted to give it two stars,
but I guess I did enjoy reading it for the most part.

After the Plutonian's former team has another blow out with the Plutonian, and the teams actions give the government pause, so the remaining government goes after them. You also get more insight into the teams past and the Plutonian's past.
