How does this author keep writing such horrible heroines? Racist, ignorant, prejudice, selfish, insulting, fickle, dishonest, and naive. And they're always doctors. I'm developing a serious lack of faith in medical professionals of all specialties from reading these books.
After reading 4 stories by this same author, I could write an instructional How-to book titled "What Not To Do When Abducted By Aliens" or something similar.
For this book...
1. Do not take the only lander out on a solo rescue mission. 2. Do not waste ammunition. 3. Do not insult your knight in shining armor. - a. Do not kill your knight in shining armor. 4. Do not attempt to escape your safe haven. - a. You know you're stranded. You know you're not about to be raped and cannibalized. Just stay. 5. Do not be a racist asshole towards your knight in shining armor. 6. Do not make assumptions about what your knight in shining armor thinks or how he feels. - a. You will always be wrong. 7. Do not act like a sloppy, desperate whore and then pretend to be a prude that would never consider stooping so low as to have sexual relations with an alien. - a. You're attracted to an alien - big fucking deal. 8. If you are a doctor, stay the hell away from me because you're probably a moron.
I just wanna smash my face into a brick wall after reading these stories. I don't understand why the author wrote the heroines this way. They have zero redeeming qualities or characteristics. They spend days worrying over what the alien dude thinks of them, while still looking down on him and considering him disgusting for not being human. "Oh noes, why isn't that filthy savage trying to have sex with me?" is quickly followed by "Well, of course he got an erection - he's a male and we all know they'll fuck any hole they can fit their dick in." Only to be countered with "It's so unflattering to realize he's not attracted to me as a person and I'm just a play thing for him to use." Jesus Christ! These women think so little of themselves and other races, I just can't stand it.
And they are constantly trying to escape when they are already safe! They have no way to get home, no way to defend themselves, and no idea how to survive on a hostile alien planet. Oh yes, run away from the one being that isn't trying to rape and kill you. Because the bad guys will certainly help you find your way home, little girl. This makes no sense. None whatsoever.
I'd recommend this book to fans of libricide. That's book burnin', for you slow folks.
This is the first book I have read by this author, and I was NOT disappointed. I usually struggle getting into the futuristic/sci-fi settings, but I had no problem with this one. For one thing, the characters were well thought out and the plot seemed to go really smooth.
A word of warning, this book is not for readers who are easily offended by strong sexual situtations, strong language, violence or light BDSM.
Dr. Tessa Bergin is on a scientific expedition from Earth to Nardyl. Expecting to see an advanced civilization, she is surprised to discover a dead planet with no survivors. (she thinks) When they land their shuttle onto the planet to explore, Tessa decides to stay behind. Her friend Layleh, and a few others go out to explore the planet to see if there is any live resources Earth can benefit from. When Layleh doesn't return and the other crew members refuse to go after her, Tessa decides to take matters into her own hands and look for her herself. While looking for her friend, she is attacked by beings that resemble the old world paintings of demons. While fighting off her attackers, she is rescued by one of them and flown to safety (he has wings) Lucien had decided to rescue the human at the last minute. Watching the others attack her ship, and not wanting her to be attacked and hurt, he puts his own life in danger to help her. Lucien is immediate drawn to Tessa. He has seen pictures of humans, and even though she is from a more primative civilization, he admires her strength, loyalty and intelligence. Although Lucien is not your normal Hero, I found him very interesting and really was on his side throughout the book. He is not that Alpha, not to say he isn't stubborn and he protects Tessa with his life, he basically was more Beta to me. He is intelligent (he was also a scientist) and falls quickly in love with Tessa. There were times I wanted to shake Tessa-she said some pretty horrible things to him-but I found myself really rooting for them. (so what if he kinda looks like the devil...lol) I am looking forward to reading the next book-and others-(on the way from New Concepts..wooo hooo) about Layleh and the Anjel from Henven.
I read this book last year but I haven't rated it because I wanted some distance to clear my mind and if possible, scrub the memory of it out of my head. But sadly, I remember it like it was yesterday.
Good points: The plots was interesting The hero was a lonely and emotionally tortured hunk with soft gooey centre. I love my damaged heroes. Scorching sexy times!
Downside: The character development was't great but then I didn't have high expectation since this is scifi romance. The romantic elements was sadly lacking.
Major downside: One of my top pet peeves... TSTL heroine!
Lucien is a Saitren warrior with red skin, wings and horns who rescues Tessa from a fatal situation (of her own creation) after she crash lands in his world. He treats well and admires her strange appearance, courage, intelligence and quickly falls in love with her. She pays him back with disgust, suspicion and prejudice. She belittles his gender and believes he'd bone anything that moves and that he only wants her because there are no other females in his worlds.
Oh, Tessa, Tessa. Have you forgotten the golden rule of respect and equality? Do unto others as you would have others do unto you! Well it applies to aliens in other worlds and far off galaxies as well.
Tessa IS hot one moment and cold the next! She can't get enough of Lucien's love making one moment and as soon as they are done, she's back to acting all prudish and inflicting emotional self flagellation for lowering herself to sleep with an alien. And yet, she spends a lot of time thinking about him and while worrying about whether or not he finds her attractive and then agonises over her level of attraction to him. I just wanted to reach inside the book and slap Tessa silly!
What Makes her character even more unbearable is the fact that she is presented to the reader as someone with exceptional intelligence. A Doctor who is supposedly competent and professional enough to go on a space exploration research. Srsly?!
The story was decent and it even had a great premise but the TSTL heroine, Dr Tessa, ruined it all with her stupidity, hypocrisy, selfishness, stubborn behaviour and judgemental attitude. She constantly put herself in danger, was rude and unappreciative and treated Lucien with undeserved disdain when all he did was try to save her life. For a supposedly intelligent and educated woman, she has no sense of self preservation and her behaviour is ridiculous! And if I never read about another TSTL heroine again it'll be too soon.
Having recently read and enjoyed Kaitlyn O'Connor's Enslaved series, I decided to read another book of hers I've had in my TBR pile for quite some time now. Although the story is clever, a scientific expedition from Earth encounters an alien race that look like our image of the devil, making it difficult for our intrepid heroine, Tessa, to see past the terrifying facade to the man beneath. Since a similar race was introduced in, The Gladiators, I thought there might be a connection between the two. Unfortunately, there wasn't any real connection other than the surface similarities of the alien race and, even more disappointing, this book did not have the humor or depth of the more recently written books.
Although the story kept my interest, I simply didn't feel as connected to the characters or the world created. This story was more erotic, and I think depended too much on that aspect without enough depth to pull me in.
This was a very enjoying read. I very much liked the fact that the two characters have d due to the differences develop an inner struggle, but I also liked very much the fact that, at the end of the day, the story is about love and how it surpasses physical differences. Even though a sci-fi erotic romance, where the hero is close to the medieval depictions of the devil, I thoroughly enjoyed the love story and was left with a feeling of wellbeing after finishing reading. Five stars are given for exactly this, since it's been quite rare now that I managed to bring myself to actually finish reading a romance, given that usually I get bored with them after reading the introduction in the story and the depiction of the setting.
Story story. 83 pages. Re-read. I absolutely love Kaitlyn O'Connor and this story is so sweet, full of misunderstanding and hurtful things spoke in fear or anger. Very enjoyable.
Previous review 06/11/11I loved this book. The cover was a little scary, in a weird way, but the book was actually so good. This author is excellent. Every one of her books has been so different. This one was as best I can describe as quiet. Tessa and Lucien were getting to know each other but not really. There was a lot of anger and fear on Tessa's part and you had no idea what Lucien was feeling, which is normal for really any relationship. Loved this book, love this author.
A certain amount of cray cray is fine by me, but after the first third of this book I think I was done. Like, the premise can be crazy (like the Last Hour of Gann) but needs a good story and character development (like the Last Hour of Gann) and just...something that this book was missing that I can't put my finger on.
I did not like that we had only one POV ... it detracted a lot from the book and made me doubt my feelings toward the hero...could have been an amazing book... like that it is just the next annoying book .. great potential but no delivery...
Well this was different! Could the mythological devil and demons of Christian lore actually be aliens who visited Earth and scared the Jesus into us?! I really liked this book. I felt bad fore Lucien when the heroine treated him badly. Highly recommend.
when I thought the story would get interesting it took 3 pages to become dull again, the romance is cute but it’s too predictable and it jumps through many time points
....................................................(- .That is me trying to sum up what I want to say about this book. I am open to reading anything new with a different kind of concept. After saying that I really did like the book Lucien was a likable character and Tess what a sweet heart she was just trying to do the right thing by looking for her friend and that's how she is captured by Lucien. My faith is strong enough where I can read this I will try other books by the author though but not the ones that clash with my belief granted this book is fiction I have read supernatural books but this one was different for me . PLEASE note that is my opinion everyone is entitle to their own. As I have said though the author has good writing skills and I really enjoyed the book. If I could get 5 minutes with the author I would like to ask a question or two maybe four or five. How did she manage to come up with the concept of the book and when she gave the finish product in what did the individual think after reading it.
the cover for this story is hideous, but the story was great. I loved this and i understand her little freak outs, however the second escape that she tried was a little uncalled for. I felt like he had proven himself enough that she could trust him, but she was an idiot. When they traveled to Earth, I was a little confused after a while about why they were doing what they were doing there and why they were doing it. I felt like it was unnecessary and I didn't like that part. She kept demanding to go back and all that, when he was nothing but kind to her (unless she tried to escape-but that was her fault) and he protected her. So he was great, but she had her moments when I just wanted to punch her in the face-which isn't uncommon when I read books for the main female and male characters haha.

I really enjoyed this book. It addressed a lot of human issues concerning aliens and what a person of Earth may think. I would hope like the character in the book, I would be able to overcome my first impressions as well.
My only issue with the book, is that it was too short. I thought maybe it could have added more information about the 2 races on the planet and why they were unable to get along. Maybe this will be addressed in another book.
I wonder who first came up with the Dhemon and Anjel philosophy; that these are alien races that are enemies of one another... I was reading Viola Grace's Deal with a Dhemon, and liked the concept, then I read this, and I go, oh, so everyone's been using it!
Anyhow, I've been on a 'chick gets stranded in space' sort of kick and this one fell into my lap. I had high hopes for the space parts but it quickly turns into a devil-looking-guy-enslaves-hot-earthling. Quick and pleasant but I dunno if I'm on board for more.
I like the cover in a weird way. I liked the world building. I liked the story line and plot. I found the heroine somewhat annoying. Especially when she kept trying to escape to literally nowhere. The story was too short, but I will be looking for the other books in the series. I liked the play on angels and demons.
Not as good as some others by this author. Wasn't as funny as some nor as well developed world building wise. Plot was a bit thin and the book was short and the heroine did some hurtful things. Took the story a while to take off then the ending was rushed. Just okay.
I don't think i have ever disliked the 'heroine' in a story before as much as i dislike Tessa. I'm sure somewhere there is a line up of people that want to knock the stupidity out of her as much as i do, i would get back in line to keep doing it over and over again.
Ever since I read the Enslaved series by Kaitlyn O'Connor I've totally and completely fallen in love with SFR and hot alien men. When Night Falls is now definitely in my favorite book list and also in my to-reread list. GO ALIENS
Good story but I found Tessa to be irritating with the constant back and forth on what she wanted. Lucien was a fab character and the story had a nice ending.
