The latest adventure for the glamorous Roman sleuth Claudia. Blackmailed into investigating the murder of a child in south-west Gaul, Claudia is plunged into a bizarre world of nature priestesses, known as the Hundred Handed, who talk with their hands, believe dwarves possess healing powers, and keep men as sex slaves. But as sinister as this is, an even darker force is at work. A master of disguise, the Scorpion is as cunning as he is ruthless. No one betrays this man and lives. Too late, Claudia discovers it was the Scorpion who lured her to Gaul in the first place . . .
MARILYN TODD lives with her husband on a French hilltop, surrounded by vineyards, châteaux and vines. As well as sixteen critically acclaimed historical thrillers, she's a prolific writer of short stories, most of which are crime, but range from commercial women's fiction to comic fantasy and all points in between. When she isn't killing people, Marilyn enjoys cooking. Which is pretty much the same thing.
This entertaining Roman mystery is the 13th part, and last one????, of the cheeky Claudia Seferius series from the author Marilyn Todd. First of all I like to point out that at the beginning of the book you'll notice a very nice and meaningful piece by Ovid (43BC-AD17), of which parts of it are implemented within some of the chapters. The story is written in a very playful witty fashion, the storyline is really fine, and the characters come all superbly to life in this story. Story-telling from this author is of a very good quality, and the series main characters, the bossy Claudia Seferius and the aristocratic policeman Marcus Orbilio come especially to the forefront with their usual quarrels and make-ups, while acting as a loving sleuthing couple. This book is mainly set in Gaul, and Claudia is lured there by the Scorpion in an attempt to get rid of her, but it will somehow turn out completely differently. The story begins with a visit by the Scorpion's assassin, a man called Gabali, to Claudia Seferius in Rome, but apart from this assignment the assassin has a request of his own, and that's to learn the truth about the death of his daughter, Clytie, who in his opinion was murdered in Gaul, and so Claudia has no other option than to do his bidding and travel to Gaul to unravel that mystery and at the same time save her own skin. And so Claudia enters the women-sect called the Hundred-Handed, where men are used as slaves, and its in these surroundings that Claudia with the help from Marcus Orbilio, who as a hired slave is searching also for the killer of Clytie, while at the same time the Scorpion is also acting as a slave to these women priestesses to commit his mischief. What will follow after the second murder of a girl called, Sarra, is a mystery with some twists and turns, and for Claudia and Marcus Orbilio each to follow her/his path in the quest to unravel this mystery and to catch the culprit of these hideous crimes. Really recommended, for this is a thrilling mystery, and whether this is the end of this series still remains to be seen as far as I can make out, and that's why I call this: "An Exciting Final Episode, Or....!?!?
I loved this series . I have read the whole series . Just wish she would have written more in Claudia Seferius series. Doesn't appear to have written any for ages except the three in the Greek series.
