All the excitement and "go-Go-GO" of a swimming meet are in the pages of FREESTYLE FOR MICHAEL. In it, twelve-year-old Michael Brown joins a specially selected group of boys and girls to be trained by the high school coach during summer vacation. Not only does he learn what it is to be a real swimmer — the diligence, patience, and intense practice it involves — but also what it means to be a member of a team. Cocky at first, Michael finds out the hard way that the group must come before any of its members, no matter how good he is, and that there is no hiding place for poor sportsmanship. FREESTYLE FOR MICHAEL is as tense as a close race, as fast-moving as a relay.
After reading The Secret Raft I looked for other books by Hazel Krants, and found this one that sounded very interesting and also had illustrations by Charles Geer. I purchased it, and I was not disappointed. I recommend this story about a young boy who learns teamwork and responsibility. I found it interesting that the technical advisor was her son, Larry Krantz, who was the 1963-1964 co-captain of the championship Plainview (Long Island) High School Swimming Team.
