Break Through Rapid Reading

Rate this book
A previous National Director of Education for Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics presents his do-it-yourself program for increasing reading speed and boosting comprehension. This program brings together the best of what classroom speed reading courses have to offer, and distills fundamental principles and skills that can be learned at home with the help of the drills and exercises provided. And because it lets readers choose their own material and set their own pace, it's the ideal method for busy people juggling a full schedule. Breakthrough Rapid Reading makes conquering information overload a reality. So whether it's cutting down on that backlog of business reports and technical matter or scaling that mountain of newspapers and leisure reading, getting up to speed is only a matter of time and practice.

gave-up

Unlike the rest of the books in my "gave up" shelf, this book ended up here by no fault of the book itself. The content that I did cover was very good, well-organized, and effective. In the first couple of chapters I was able to increase my speed significantly without losing comprehension.

What I came to discover, though, is that I don't want to read fast. There, I said it. For me, speed reading is like speed eating. I don't want to learn how to eat my meal in 30 seconds because I LOVE food and I don't want to miss the nuances of flavor, even if it means missing out on other foods. By the same token, I don't want to read a book in 2 hours because I LOVE READING. I love slowly turning the pages and experiencing the book. Even if it means reading less books.

So there you have it. If reading is utilitarian for you, go for it. It's great. But I'll pray for your soul, because reading is a treat.

Too many books, too little time?
Many books on your TBR but hardly having the time to finish them?
Well, increasing your reading speed will help you finish the books on your TBR faster but you might have to sacrifice other things like enjoyment, and relaxation that one aims with reading. However, we don’t always read for enjoyment or leisure. Many times we have to read for other reasons too. So here I find this book very helpful. It definitely helped me increase my reading speed with its many exercises and drills.

I have been practicing the techniques and drills for a few weeks on and off. I know if I stick to them more I can increase my reading speed and comprehension. There are some basic lessons and some techniques that I was not aware of. I plan to continue practicing them and utilize all the tips and tricks it has provided. Out of the many books I read about speed reading this one felt more genuine and more practical. Recommended.

I am already reading at least 3 times faster than I did before I started reading this book. It is amazing. However, it is a hands-on book. It has daily exercises. While I have explored some speed reading in the past, the thing I love about this book is the idea that rapid reading with good comprehension is a learnable skill. Your brain learns how to read and comprehend words as units, without subvocalizing them. In other words, the frustration that might occur early on because comprehension is low, is only temporary-- if you keep practicing.

This book actually works, if you put in the effort to practice daily. (OK I skipped a few days so it took me two months to finish instead of six weeks.) My reading rate tripled with full comprehension, from 215 words per minute to 655. I can achieve much higher rates with some comprehension loss. If you are a student or need to read for your job, the techniques around selective reading and recall will help you to hit much, much higher rates while getting everything you need out of a book (or article, magazine, email, etc.).

I wish I had discovered this 15 years ago. I could have read three times as many books over those years, and it would have been an enormous help in grad school.

Summary: Not bad for a book about speed reading. I'd choose this over some of the hacks that exist on the topic.

I'm currently researching techniques on Speed Reading for an upcoming course I'm going to co-teach and wanted to see what others are doing. Kump, who is the director of Evelyn Wood provides a solid resource for those that are already reasonably good readers. Myself a speed reader with a max rate of 2500-ish wpm, I can attest that the techniques used are accurate. That said, I would say that he's kept it simple on purpose. It's a great entry, but if you struggle with reading, you may find his way of describing it unapproachable.

P. 11 - This has the ability break down various levels of reading. I like the ranges, but I'm not a huge fan of his wording on what people Need to improve on. I think there is a better way to describe or in some cases, I don't agree with what precisely one has to do.

Pg 23 - I don't agree you should always use your hand. This is a good technique to learn, but over time, it's unnecessary. Instead, I think you start this way as a reminder of what you're trying to train yourself to do.

Pg. 51 - This is an important chapter about recall vs. reading. They are different things. Most books on speed reading have a HUGE memory section. When you see this, it typically means that the writer isn't a speed reader and doesn't know what they are talking about. Kump doesn't do this, so for that reason alone, I gave him 4 stars. If you spend any money on such books, go ahead and write that money off. You're getting info second hand and often incorrectly described. Reading is reading. Memorization is something else. If you try to practice both skills at the same time, you will set yourself up for failure unless you happen to already be particularly good at one or the other.

Pg 61 - This is important. But I think there are better ways to describe why writing format is so important.

Pg 127 - I like that he presents the other techniques (skimming and scanning). I still believe strongly that these two techniques are less about techniques and more that they are precursors to speed reading. This is how I will present it and I'm pretty sure I'm right, but I think this one is hard to prove scientifically given the paradigm that reading teachers live and also uninteresting for many reading teachers vs. people that have to read for their bread and butter.

So many books, so little time!

Before practicing any techniques, I tested out on 3 different types of reading at 230 WPM, 252 WPM and 290 WPM.

After practicing the 1st technique my WPM on the easiest type of reading went from 290 to 470 WPM. I'm impressed. I feel that my comprehension has suffered a little.

I need to practice the excercises in the first half of the book for awhile before I move on to the rest of the book. But, I do intend to finish this eventually.

Ok. Where to start? This book is basically a self-paced six-week course, which I completed in the last three months and a half. I embraced the book fully, deciding to always follow its instructions and do all exercises to the best of my ability.

A small Speed Reading FAQ:

A note: when referring to hand movements, I mean a certain pattern that you do with your finger on top of the page of texts, which your eyes follow.

1) Is it REALLY the same as reading?
A) Yes and no. Reading is actually a far more complicated skill than most people believe. What do you consider reading? Speaking every word to yourself? Understanding all of the ideas of the book? Well, depending on your definition, the answer to this question will vary greatly. In short: no, a lot of speed reading isn't really what you traditionally think of as reading.

2) Well, then what the hell is speed reading?
A) You can expect "traditional reading" up to about 800 words per minute (WPM), probably a bit less. This involves linear hand and eye movements (hand movements are a crucial component of speed reading), going from one word to the next and next, then the next line and the one after that. Beyond that, you will probably have to use non-linear reading hand movements: paragraphing, the famous z-movement and criss-crossing. These types of hand movements focus a lot more on grasping the concepts behind a text rather than actually "reading" word-by-word. These hand movements don't have an upper limit, and could theoretically be used for speeds of 6000WPM or more (assuming you could handle such rates).

3) Well, thats nice, but I actually like to enjoy reading. Speed reading would ruin it for me, wouldn't it?
A) Hey, just because you know speed reading doesn't mean you have to use it for every single text you ever encounter. You can always adjust your rate to your reading purpose. I wouldn't speed read a lot of literary texts. However, we spend so much time reading, from emails to studying, that speed reading is too valuable of a skill to ignore completely. Personally, a lot of my reading is non-fiction, and don't tend to read such books for the authors' literary prowess.

------------------------

This is an excellent book. You can progress at your own pace and determine how much you actually want to practice or read (I recommend the chapters in the last two weeks, especially for students). It helped me improve a peak rate of 265WPM in easy texts to about 1000WPM with excellent comprehension, and about 1200WPM with good comprehension. This book really has changed my life. In a heavy day of leisurely reading, I could expect to read about 100 pages of an average book prior to taking this course, now I could easily read a book or two a day. For example, towards the end of the course, I read 170 pages of Hannah Tinti's The Good Thief in 45 minutes.

But do keep in mind that this is not an "easy" course. I spent a total of about 70 hours doing speed reading exercises over the last four months. This is a hands on book, and it will require practice for you to increase your own speeds.

I recommend this book to everyone who, well, reads. Its uses are so diverse and effective that I feel this review and a mere 5 stars will never do it justice.

Okay, after finally having some time to read books again, I realized that I was going to have to learn how to read faster. I had heard little things here and there about speed-reading, but I didn't understand it. I love reading and hated the idea that I would be pushing myself to read faster at the expense of enjoyment or comprehension. But this book pointed out that there are ways to read much faster that can help with both. It does come down to that old paradox about quantity vs. quality a little though. So, after researching books on speed reading, I found this one with the highest praise and reviews and started in on it. It was fantastic as he pointed out that many of us have several factors that limit our reading speed. One is that our eyes make saccads from word to word instead of moving smoothly. Watch anyone's eyes closely who is reading and you'll see that this is the case. But Kump points out, you can force your eyes to move faster by dragging your finger under the words and then your eyes will flow and you can actually force them to move faster. Also, you can read faster if you practice. After only 2 weeks, and with some tedious measurements, I found I really could force myself to read almost twice as fast. Another little trick he points out is that many of us read as slowly to ourselves as we do when we read out loud, even though there is no vocal cord limit to how fast our eyes move, we still pronounce the words to ourselves as we read. That is a habit that is hard to break, but when worked at, can increase our reading speed dramatically. Loved the book, it changed the way I read. But it was hard for me to have the self discipline to do all the exercises, and keep timing myself to measure my progress.

Picking this up again. Breakthrough Rapid Reading (BRR) is a good book of it's type.

I care more about what I get out of a book (enjoyment, comprehension & knowledge) than when I get out of a book (how quickly i read it). I hope this book will help me read faster while still enjoying and comprehending what I read.

As a starting point, I read at the speed of an average college student. (though its been a long time since college....).

The 36 chapters are to be read one per day and reading them and doing the associated exercises take about 20-30 minutes. The course work is for a 6 week period . (this seems quite obtainable if you are interested in trying this out, anyone? )

(for some strange reason, I started putting a blurb on each chapter in the comment field, instead of the review. Too late to turn back now )

A nice aspect of this book is that you work with books you choose/want to read. So you don't do reading exercises in lieu of other reading.

Kump defines reading as "looking at the printed words and getting enough meaning from them to satisfy your purpose ."
After a week, I don't think there is anything magically or shocking about this book. Just an effort to go faster and stay focused.

The book chapters and drills seemed to be divided into drills that focus on
:rate-to go faster/smoother just seeing more words quicker
:mechanics-speeding up the components such as hand, eyes and page turning
:comprehension - understanding what you read as you read it
:recall- being able to state what you read at a later point
:drills that bunch groups of words , groups of sentences, reading a sentence backward for meaning.
:most drills have single goals but some have multiple ie; speed and comprehension

Just as exercising involve stressing your body over increasing amounts over a period of time. BRR exercises increase stress over a period of time.
* Exercise involves reading the same section repeatedly for a 2 minute period with each time stretching past the prior stop point.
* exercise involves reading for 3 minutes than pushing to reread the same material in 2 minutes than repeat for 1 minute.
* reading a paragraph as fast as possible and then recalling what you just read on paper.

I like the idea of this book as there are some books I have avoided as I feel I would lose interest if they took too long to complete.

Stay tuned for further details.

As far as I know, this is the premier text for speed-reading. I first used it for a class during my second year of college. Despite the fact that I was far less consistent in working through the book than I should have been, I more than doubled my reading speed without substantial loss in comprehension. If a slacker like me can make that kind of improvement...
I recently started going through the book again and have once again seen a drastic improvement in both my fiction and nonfiction rates. Cool.

Ingenious book on speed reading techniques that really guides you through acquiring the skills as if you were in a real course with instructor and everything. Be warned: You will really need to practice if you want to acquire the skill of speed reading - I took an hour and more for all the pratice drills every day in the last week!

This book was an interesting read for so many reasons. The biggest because it will challenge the way you read. Instead of stressing complete comprehension, it stresses quick reading thru of material while active organizing how the material is arranged and structured. So it's as much a course about understanding the process of reading as speed reading. By the end of the book I have found that my reading rate has doubled, and my comprehension has increased. It's almost one of those situations in which seeing is believing. You start out skeptically trying what the author is instructing you to do, and after a few weeks you find that your reading has dramatically improved.

With all that being said, I wouldn't say I agree with everything the author argues. For example, he recommends speed reading fiction by going thru the book quickly first looking for main characters involvment and general plot lines. I disagree with this because to me the main reason for a fiction book is enjoyment and getting lost in the story.

I do see many applications for speed reading techniques in school, work, non-fiction books, and the like.

I highly recommend that everyone try a system like this out because of the dramatic difference it will make in your ability to get thru the reading material you long to go thru.

I read 3 books to learn to speed read and this was my favorite of the three. It was a really good resource. This is a long term book. My library copy is going back and I'm going to buy my own copy and have it on hand to teach my kids when they are ready. I need to do the drills and get my speed up. It was really good.

Practiced this during holiday of my junior year of my high school. Now my finger keeps moving in the zigzag fashion on the page :D It's a good training program

Having said that, speed reading is good when it is just to scan for its ideas. Deeply reading any book requires a lot more interaction and hence time.

I found many interesting ideas in the book, but ultimately I consider it a bit dated. The exercises are particularly not suited for users of ebook readers, such as myself, as they add a lot of overhead. Also, the exercises are mostly of one type so personally, I feel the need to explore more books on this topics.

Will it make you read faster? Absolutely. Will it make you read better? Absolutely not. I've found that using these methods I can read a 400 page book in a day, easily... However I enjoy it so much more, and comprehend so much more, by taking that little bit longer. To be well read, is not to read a thousand books, to be well read is to read one, and fully understand it.

Man this ain’t a book this is a whole ass workshop. There is so much drilling in there. The author really knew what they were talking about. It was just hard to finish. My reading rate for sure doubled from this.

I've been working my way through this one for maybe a month and a half - it involves exercises and practice everyday, so I could only read 3 to 8 pages a day if I stayed within the program. I liked it and think it has some validity. I feel like my overall reading rate has increased modestly - maybe from about 240 WPM to 450 WPM. I also feel like I gained some skill to go through some material much faster if needing only a very cursory familiarity with the subject matter. I think the book is dated both in terms of technology and technique, but it still is largely relevant. Though I personally doubt I'll ever read with great comprehension at really high speeds, I do, after reading this, think it may be possible. There are many drills where one is "practice reading" way faster than comprehension rates. At times, that seemed pointless and silly, but I did pick up some stuff that way and can feel that there is some cognitive switch happening. I can imagine the possibility that if I continue to practice at really high rates that, slowly, my regular reading rate will creep up. It's good to cultivate the ability to absorb more information at a higher rate, even if my regular reading for pleasure and self-education stays at the same or only slightly higher rates. I'm glad to have read this. I think I will check out other books or courses on this topic in the future and further explore whether or not I can alter my brain and reading skills. I will say that this book and topic would be of more value to a student or someone required to read a lot of material for work.

A scam and worse. 1st, he tells you not to read ahead, but to do the exercises I order. He claims it's because they lose thier impact if you know what's coming. I think it's because they're just the same thing over and over with minor variations that are somehow supposed to increase reading speed. All he's teaching is how to skim. That's useful in certain situations but it's not reading faster. Two things made me really roll my eyes. The insistence that if you don't understand a passage reading it his way, then the book was just badly written (never can be a problem with the fact you are trying to read faster than humanly possible), and the fact that he says you need to eliminate "skip backs", which is something people do while reading to make sure they understand a passage. His solution, don't skip back, but read the passage three times in a row. Please explain to me how reading a passage three times at 1000 wpm is any different from reading it once at 333 wpm, which is a reasonable speed people actually read at?

ANLAYARAK HIZLI OKUMA /// PETER KUMP

Excellent techniques for practicing reading faster while keeping or improving your comprehension and retention. Also covers what to focus on when you're reading - what is it your trying to get out of the material you are reading. The purpose changes how you read.

This book is not just about reading fast (moving eyes quickly, etc.), it's more about enhancing reading comprehension. So I think it's good. But to become a fast reader, you have to practice, practice and practice........

Highly recommended, above almost everything else. Lets not call it "speed reading" lets call it "reading and learning exceptionally".
