Briefly, the story is about a man, Homer, who while on a voyage with Odysseus in 12 BC, succumbed to a Siren’s song. For him, it was lust, but the Siren felt she owned him. Homer subsequently met a stowaway Sera/Samia. He helped hide Sera and during the journey, they fell in love. They found a place to live, she became pregnant, and she and Homer were happy. The Siren was not. She lured the pregnant Sera to the shore and drowned her. She then cursed them both. The bottom line is that Homer is immortal. In order to become “human” while he searches for Sera, he must drink a person’s blood, killing him. By doing this, he takes on the body of that person. Sera is cursed to be reincarnated, then killed, over and over again, though she doesn’t remember her past lives. Homer has searched and found her at least 12 times throughout the centuries. Why he can’t remain in his own body is perplexing.
