Dr. Kate Richmond, a beautiful American surgeon returning to her native Shanghai in 1926, finds herself drawn to the Communist Chinese cause and becoming involved with its idealistic young leader, Shen Lung, and an American adventurer, Thomas Blake
I wasn't very impressed by the introductory chapters, which seemed pedantic in their explanations; however, as the story progressed, Grant lost the pedantic tone and wrote an enjoyable story about the long march that was part of the communist revolution in China.
This is one of my favourite books, I read it some time ago, and it made a big impression on me. It's set in China during the revolution and has it all: adventure, history, romance, drama and action. I especially liked reading about the Long March.
Exceptional read. The mix of races and cultures, the mix of cross purposes in life, the search for fulfillment and for a workable ideology...it's all here in Maxwell Grant's book set in revolutionary China.
I bought this book about 20 years ago whilst in transit for a flight to New York - I think I opened the first page then and since it has travelled many miles and waited on the bookshelf to be read. I don't know whether I would have enjoyed it as much 20 years ago - it's set in China in 1926 - at the start of the communist revolution - a part of history I'd never really learnt about - but now I'm curious to learn more. It was an enjoyable and educational read, at times a little gruesome, and made you realise the vastness of China as a country both in land mass and population. Believable characters and storyline.
I remember seeing this book in a thrift store one day, out shopping with mom. I think I was 15/16. Mom went her way, I bee-lined to the book section (as I did damn near every time we went shopping, no matter what store we were at). Saw this, sounded interesting, asked mom, and bought it. I liked it. Read it a bunch of times.
