Aleatory. As in ey-lee-uh-tawr-ee.As in an adjective. As in a synonym for unpredictable. As in the only word to describe making the mistake of falling for someone who is not only ten years younger than you, but your best friend's son...
Okay, first. I. LOVE. CARL. He and Cora made everything so much easier and downright funny when the truth came out. His whole “communicate” lecture was something I’d like to print out and give to my husband, my BFF’s husband, strangers on the street...everyone. Because communication truly is key to any relationship.
Whew. Now that that’s off my chest. This is my first read by Xavier Neal, but I promise it absolutely won’t be my last. We get some taboo and risk and angst and worry and so-messy-it-feels-real feelings here. Nix and Sloan had so much chemistry that I was afraid of the inevitable blowup when they were outed. And the funniest part? The explosion wasn’t the one I expected. At all. In fact, I only loved Cora and Carl more for their insight and amusement at Sloan or Nix thinking that they were slick and subtle. I loved how this story flowed and how Sloan was definitely NOT in it for any games. She was a strong, confident woman with no time for immature games from someone who, while younger, wasn’t a child by any stretch. And Nix so richly deserved every last bit of comeuppance he received by a few along the way. Let’s just say it helped build character where he was lacking because so much came easily to him until Sloan.
I’m so intrigued in what may come next because this author has a gift for grabbing a reader, so I look forward to what she uses to lure me in next time.
The hero in this story is extremely immature, 26 going on 12 and he wasn’t worth the risk of the heroine possibly ruining her friendship with his mother.
I couldn’t fathom their mutual interest because they had zero chemistry. In fact, the heroine had more chemistry with his mother, and not in a sexual way. They just sparked and clicked and I found their relationship very entertaining.
As for the hero—in bed, every sex scene consisted of him fucking her like a jack/sledge hammer with carnivore tendencies into the mattress. Of course, we’re led to believe she likes it this way, every time. It got very repetitive and boring—really quickly!
I was annoyed when a character was singled out for being a nice guy, like it was a crime, like it was suspicious behavior. The crime committed was the nice-guy shaming that happens in this book.
I was anxious to finish this 83 pages too long story because it evoked memories of my favorite book by this author, ‘Redneck Romeo’ that explored a similar theme of a slightly older woman who also had more money than the hero. I loved and believed the hero's feelings in that story and his absolute devotion to her, just not in this one. Your opinion may differ.
It's no secret that I'm a big fan of age gap romance and this one was a really wonderful one. To start, this is an older woman/younger man romance, which in my opinion is much rarer to come by that the standard OM/YW read. Add to this the fact that this is also a best friend's son romance and you know things are going to be extra tempting and delicious. At its heart this is simply a very intense, sweet, tension filled romance that is rich with turbulent, powerful emotions. But actually there is nothing simple about it. A skillfully crafted storyline immediately captures your attention and the complex characters will have you fiercely invested in them, their world and their happiness. I loved Sloan and Nix so much. These two felt so incredibly genuine and were super easy to relate to on multiple levels. The attraction and chemistry is elemental and blistering. The sparks and sharp, witty banter fly between these two with lightening speed and you will find yourself laughing out loud on one page, swooning on another and then in desperate need of an ice cold beverage to try to cool down on yet another. Try to prepare yourself for the major case of the feels you are going to catch from this beautiful, moving romance. This is my frank, freely posted review.
This was my first book of Xavier Neal's and I have to say, I enjoyed it. I thought I'd get a bit more forbidden and angst than what I got, but the characters made it a fun and enjoyable read. ***3.5-3.75 stars***
I do love a good age gap romance, especially where the woman is older, so I was really looking forward to this one by a new to me author. It wasn't everything I expected, but I still enjoyed it. This was not only an age-gap romance, but also small town romance and best friend's son. Totally forbidden. With that, I expected there to be a lot more angst, but the banter and chemistry filled that void.
Aleatory takes place in a small town in Michigan known for their apples. Sloan is a romance writer and she leaves her home in Texas to be near her best friend Cora in Michigan and to focus on writing and work for the fall/winter. She just needed to get away. What she encounters besides her welcoming friend and husband (Cora and Carl) is a cocky and sexy real estate agent who just happens to be her friend's son. Nix is out of college, developing his brand and looking to achieve the success he felt his parents never did. He wants more out of life that what his parents have in the small town. He lives in the city and is making a name for himself in his job. He's a more of a "love em and leave em" sort of guy. But when Sloan and Nix meet, they have instant chemistry. They play off each other and have a fun sort of banter right away. But that's all they can have. You don't mess with your friend's kids.
This book is told from both Nix and Sloan's POV. I'm glad we got both of them, because I needed to see what Nix was really about. When a young, good looking, obviously ladies man sets his sights on a woman, I love to see them fall and what makes them act so crazy while they are in the process of falling. He's still young, so he plays a few games. Unfortunately, Sloan has "been there, done that" and not looking for that sort of thing. She's actually not looking for anything but a reprieve from the stress of work. But when a muse comes to play, you might as well take it. Scratch the itch, amiright? 😉
Sloan, what can I say about her? At first she seemed to act a little younger than I thought she was. She is supposed to be 10 years older than Nix, but I didn't get that right away. It initially drew me out of the story at the beginning. Something was just off. Then I got to understand her a little more. She gave as good as she got with Nix and with his friends. But then as the story progressed, I saw more of the "boss babe" come out to play. She was sexy and successful and she began to fall for the forbidden fruit. How was this going to play out with her friend/his parents?
Overall, this is like a tame version of a forbidden age-gap romance. It's sweet and sexy and both characters fall for one another pretty quickly. I loved their banter and the way they played off each other. I didn't feel like age was a factor. It was mostly just the fact that he was the son of her friend. And even that was mild. They just fit and made each other happy. I wish they had more pull back from outsiders to their relationship to create that angst I would've loved to see. Fun main and supporting characters and also liked the cool little small town it took place in. I wouldn't mind seeing more in this world.
Aleatory...I must say that the name alone was quite intriguing. Add in the background to the storyline and I found myself diving it.
Sloan Mathers enacts an escape plan to Michigan. She needs to leave her life in the limelight behind for a bit. It just so happens that her best friend is in Michigan and helping her find a place to escape. Being a successful author, as well as a television and movie executive keeps her immensely busy. Her plan is assisted by her friend’s son that just happens to work in real estate. Landing her as a client will highlight his portfolio. But Sloan was not expecting the gorgeous man that exited the sleek car that day. Nope, absolutely not, Nix Wagner is breathtakingly handsome and dangerously smooth. The problem is that he is genuine. And their instant attraction is beyond dangerous. Their age gap, their mutual connection, and the simple fact that any relationship would be wrong is glaringly apparent but pushed to the side.
When it’s clear that Nix is in full pursuit, Sloan slowly lowers her guard. Maybe a bit of fun is ok. But this became more than fun almost instantly. Their lives became entangled and they fell effortlessly together. But hiding their relationship from her friend and his family is exhausting and frustrating. Add in insecurities and jealousy and the strain becomes heavy. Is this simply a game or an all in?
This couple’s banter and ease with each other was simply amazing. Neal gave us a storyline and characters that were relatable and allowed us to see what the ups and downs were in a real relationship. Neal very eloquently showed us a reverse age gap that brought heat, anxiety, hope, and love. Sloan made no excuses for the woman she was and Nix was more than just a younger man. His fears and maturity level along with his dedication to this relationship gave me hope that the world will one day accept love unconditionally.
4.5 Stars! The best reverse age-gap romance I've read!
Sloane - the 36 year old romance author is fed up of her family constantly reminding her of biological clock and so escapes across country to the small town where her best friend lives. When Cora said her youngest son was going to get with the search for a rental, Sloane was not expecting the 6ft something sex-on-legs in a suit that turned up. She's even more surprised when this hot younger man wants her...a lot.
Nix - at 26 years old, he's more of a fling kinda guy. Happy to have a night or two of mutual pleasure before parting ways, no expectations. and no hurt feelings. That is until he's asked to help find his mum's best friend a place to stay for a while. To say instant attraction would be an understatement. He knows what he wants...her. He just needs to get her to take a chance on him.
It was great to have older heroine like Sloane, who didn't take any crap or play stupid games. There were times when I wanted to shake Nix, but she really stuck her ground. Plus I really loved how the conflict wasn't the usual cut-and-paste like lots of other taboo/forbidden relationships, but instead not what I thought it was going to be!
I only knocked off half a star, because I wasn't a huge fan of how often he referred to past women. Even if this wasn't in detail and only in his internal dialogue and nothing out loud to the heroine, but I still wasn't a fan.
This is such a great book. Low on angst, but high on steam. There is so much fire between them, it just burns through pages! I look forward to what Xavier does next!
I loved this! Xavier's done another amazing job with this one!
So, this could probably be just me but I've not read an age gap romance where the woman was the older one in the relationship, so I was definitely excited to get into this! One thing I love about Xaviers writing is the women she writes are always strong and confident.
Sloan is a writer in search of a break and goes to stay near where her best friend lives. Nix, (Coras son and Sloans best friend) is the estate agent that found the cabin for Sloan to rent and of course once they meet, they have undeniable chemistry to each other. I really enjoyed reading about them sneaking around and reading about their growing love. And as always, the sex scenes are incredibly hot.
I feel like Cora and Carl need their own mention because honestly, they're hilarious, understanding and so supportive of both Sloan and Nix.
This is definitely one of my favourite reads from Xavier and if you love your age gap romances, then definitely give this one a go!
I loved this story. Let me start by saying I am not usually a fan of romances where one person is significantly older than the other. This story honestly helped change my mind about that. Sloan and Nix meet when she goes to a small town near her best friend to get a break from her very busy life. Sloan is immediately attracted to Nix but there's a problem, he's her best friend's son! I love how close Sloan and Cora, her best friend, are throughout this book. And the budding relationship between Sloan and Nix was sweet and very hot. I loved them individually and even more so together. And I love that while their ages were mentioned it wasn't a huge focal point of their relationship. This was a great read and I think you will love it. I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I wanted to read Aleatory last year and put it off, and now I wish I hadn't. I enjoyed the older successful woman finding love with the younger successful man, and there were moments of immaturity that annoyed me; however, I still enjoyed the journey.

I’ve just finished my arc reading of this book and I LOVED IT. I literally read it in about 3 hours as I couldn’t put it down! I just read the whole book with a smile on my face! It was so sweet & romantic but also hilarious & steamy. The characters were perfection! None of the childish angst or anything; they were both honest, to the point and I just loved it. Nix.. holy shit, I want him for myself! I adored him 😍 I’ve previously read the Bennett duet by Xavier which I LOVED but this has honestly knocked it out the park for me! It comes out on the 25th and if you want an easy read with an incredible couple & a dreamy HEA you HAVE to read it!
The ultimate forbidden older woman young man story.
“If your life is really that amazing and you’ve really accomplished that much and people really adore you that much…,” the silent pause is ear-splitting, “why run away?”
Sloan and Nix burn up the pages of this humorous and spicy as heck age gap extravaganza.
“Nicholas Wagner,” he warmly states at the same time he extends his hand towards mine, “but you can call me Nix.”
That is not all I wanna call you…
Her best friends son is off limits but she can’t resist.
“Look, baby, I get why we can’t…I just…it doesn’t change the fact I wish we could. It also doesn’t change the fact that to me that’s what we are.”
Carl is my favorite character and omg he’s hilarious.
“Son,” I announce to cut off the end of the statement I don’t need to hear. “Kitchen. Eating.” “Why?”
“See, Cora? Told you not to feed the strays.” 2 likes
Wow! There is so much to be said about this book by Xavier Neal that I am afraid my review won’t be good enough. It is simplest to say just read this book.
This is the story of Sloan and Nix, they have so many things stacked against them to find their happiness, there is the age difference, financial maturity oh and then there is the fact that Nix is Sloan’s best friend’s son!! But here is the thing, Xavier has written such amazing characters that their flaws and emotions make them so real that you are wishing them their forever love.
This book has all the good stuff and plenty of steam some of which is a little dark and may make you do more than blush, so be aware, but I don’t think it took anything away from the connection these two have. I really just enjoy the way Xavier writes a story and I know you will too. Check out this one!
Holy cow!!! This book almost melted my kindle... But between the steam and hotness the story and love between Sloan and Nix is amazing!! You can feel the connection between two and it is undeniable!
These characters will make you love them. I couldn't put this book down once I started. Sloan and Nix are not your ideal couple but they fit so perfect! They balance each other out and you can see the way that helps with their relationship!
I wasn't sure going into this book, but I loved it and I am so happy I read it and gave it a chance!! Xavier has a way with words that I love. I like the blunt and honest characters and that is what she gives you!
Xavier blows me away with the way she writes a story and the characters that I fall in love with!!
Sloan has decided it's time for a change of scenery, so she leaves her home in Texas to become a new resident in the state of Michigan. With moving to Michigan she will also be closer to her best friend Cora... and her handsome and much younger son Nix!
When Cora mentioned having a son in real estate that could help her find a new home she never expected him to be the grown man that stepped out of the fancy car decked out in a tailor fit suit. She was not prepared for a man quite like Nix... he has forbidden written all over him, but she just can't help herself!
Aleatory is a story of new beginnings, friendship, testing boundaries, and finding love where you least expect it. Sloan wanted to change her life up a bit, find new inspiration for her stories, breath a different air for a while... not fall into a relationship. But when she meets Nix she can't help but be a little enamored with him, he says all the right things, makes her smile, and tempts her more than any other man ever has.. But crossing that line with him could put her friendship with his mother at risk, and she just can't do it. She feels like she has just wandered into some seriously dangerous territory … but danger has never looked so good!
This forbidden little gem is bound to keep your eyes glued to the words from beginning to end, it's so darn addictive! I met these characters and I was instantly taken with them, and HAD to know if they would venture into that forbidden territory! They strung me along with their indecision, had me dying in anticipation, smothered me with heartfelt emotion, and left me thoroughly satisfied... it was such a good read!! Highly recommend!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
I haven’t read much from the lovely Mrs. Xavier Neal but the little I have I’m in love with! Her words make me swoon and melt so easily! I couldn’t read this one fast enough to see what happens! Each moment I would laugh my husband would ask me about until I just ended up telling him about the book.
Sloan is such a sexy name for a woman and I loved reading about this woman so much!! She is quite the woman and just learning about her made me swoon even without Nix in the picture! The attitude she gave during this one scene with Nix and his friends had me laughing so much I cried!
Nix is swoon worthy but my goodness was he annoying. I’m in my mid 30’s and the crap he pulled annoyed me and left me wishing for a certain ending. His bedroom abilities might have made up for some of the crap but not all of it entirely. His hands seemed to be like magic though and may have sparked some passion in my own life.
I couldn’t put this book down!! You got the forbidden and the romance with the unknown and it’s just everything I’ve ever wanted in a book! I even love apples and it made me crave some of these dishes so much!! (I’m hoping for recipes soon!) What an emotional journey Sloan goes through and just leaves you so satisfied at the end. I loved these words and I can’t wait to not only own a paperback but I can’t wait for more books from this talented author!
Another amazing book by Xavier Neal! Loved this book!!! So so good! I haven't read many age gap books, especially where the female is the one that is older, but this one had all the feels. The banter between Sloan and Nix was great!
I love that we get both Nix and Sloan's POV. Nix was a typical 26-year-old, who sleeps around, and has no desire to settle down. Sloan is 10 years older and isn't necessarily looking for love. She just needs a change of pace. It's pretty insta-love when they meet each other for the first time. The chemistry flying around between these two was off the charts!!
I really did enjoy how Nix pursued Sloan. I actually forgot most of the time that there was an age gap until there was some sort of joke or just a random comment made.
And let us not forget Carl and Cora, Nix's parents and Sloan's best friend. Those two were great! Cora had me laughing throughout the book.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Another glorious book by Xavier Neal!! This Taboo book of a older woman and younger man will literally leave you swooning! Sloan is such an amazing character. She’s got everything she wants when it comes to her career but her personal life has been in shambles. So, she heads out for a long overdue Vaca at her best friends (Cora) place for a while. And I completely adored Cora and Carl. They are what we all strive for in a relationship! Nix is Coras son who just happens to be a realtor who is helping Sloan find a place while she is there. Now Nix is one of my faves! He is young, eager for the finer things, and now he wants Sloan to himself.
Let me tell you that this story has everything! I loved watching Nix and Sloans journey. You have age gap, different states, secret love affair, jealousy, and a whole lot of sparks! Their little love banter will have you laughing out loud, and I seriously couldn’t get enough of these two.
This was my first book I’ve read by the author and I loved the writing, storyline, and characters. The dialogue and story was super easy to follow and the character banter is HILARIOUS! The female character is a romance novelist and has the sharpest tongue that keeps you entertained! Honestly, all of the characters have playful funny traits and I cracked up countless times during the book.
While on a ‘sabbatical’ across country to stay near her best friend and get her creative juices flowing, she meets a guy who’s younger than her and in her eyes is ‘off limits’.
Stand-alones tend to be fast-burn (sometimes too fast IMO) but this one flowed in a steady pace that I loved. The timeline and story of the main characters along with the struggles and growing pains of their hidden affair are all super relatable. I loved this book!
Xavier Neal is a new to me author and I can say, I was utterly slayed by this writing!! Couldn't and didn't want to put this down.
Aleatory was funny and romantic, the characters were dreamy, flawed but perfect. Witty and swoonworthy and real.
Sloan was a boss, confident and assertive in what she needs out of life, looking for a break, but ending up with a life altering rental home. Nix was striving for greatness, career focus but was blindsided by his mom's best friend.
This book felt real, which is contradictory, since is a work of fiction, but it's so perfectly written. No excess drama, nothing over the top, just the perfect amount of flirting, moral/personal dilemma, great sex with a touch of life lesson and words of wisdom.
I have to start this by saying this age gap romance was off the charts HOT. Like seriously...I had to fan myself Several time's HOT. 🔥🔥
Nix knew what he wanted from the moment he first laid his eyes on Sloan and that feeling was definitely mutual with Sloan.
The banter and chemistry between was off the chart's AMAZING! Even I felt it and I love reading book's I can FEEL. It only got better throughout the book.
Cora. Sloan's bestfriend and her husband Carl were seriously entertaining.
I recommend reading if you enjoy a sexy, steamy Older woman/Younger man Age-gap Romance Aleatory will Not disappoint.
Nix and Sloan has the best back and forth banter I’ve read in a while, they each gave as good as the got. I’m not a fan of age gap where the woman is older but Sloans case it was only 10 years so I didnt mind it but I loved Sloan!! She thought visiting her best friend would give her a break and a reset until in walks Nix, her son and Sloan was down for the count lol.
Another amazing books by Xavier Neal. Love this taboo age gap female older younger male book. Nix and Sloan are perfect for each other, their chemistry was fire.
This is an age-gap story done right. Nix and Sloan are funny, have great chemistry in and out of the bedroom and are not good at hiding secrets. I enjoyed the humour and bantering between Nix and Sloan and Cora and Carl (Nix's parents). The sensual scenes are hot.The characters are fantastic, and the plot development was faultless. Sloan is ten years older than Nix, and she has no hesitation about being in a relationship with him. She is, however, terrified of Nix's mom finding out because they are best friends, and Sloan does not want to ruin that relationship. When Sloan left Texas to vacation in a small town in Michigan, the last thing Sloan excepted was to fall in love with her best friend's son.
The story is told from Nix and Sloan's POV, which made the story that more delightful to read. Nix was not afraid to go after Solan, but some of his behaviour was still motivated by fears. Nix was afraid Sloan would walk away from him given their age difference and the shitty decisions he sometimes makes. Sloan is a boss ass bitch who knows what she wants and how she likes it and doesn't have time to play games. Sloan is an internationally renowned author, so she does not have time to waste on boyish games.
Overall, Aleatory is sweet and sexy, and you fall in love with Nix and Sloan falling love, doing crazy shit, and telling lies to keep their love affair a secret in a small town.
Sloan whips Nix into shape with that sharp tongue of hers, and Nix brings Sloan to heel with his😏
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Who knew she would find love in the small town of Applecourt, certainly not Sloan Mathers. She had come to Applecourt to find a little peace and gain some perspective. But what she found was so unexpected and certainly not what she was looking for. This story had touches of humor and poignant points throughout the story. Sloan's and Nix's parents only added to the story. I love the way Xavier Neal spins her stories as if the characters are having conversations with the reader. It draws the reader into the story as if they have a front-row seat. It was a well-written, enjoyable story that I would recommend to anyone who loves age gap stories.
I am a huge fan of of age gap and finding one with an older woman/younger man is rare. The chemistry between Nix and Sloan was so palpable from the beginning. Xavier Neal slated this book and I can't wait to be destroyed some more.
Absolutely loved this older woman/younger man story!!!
Sloan escapes her hectic life in Texas and heads to spend some time with her best friend in Michigan. Little does she know that her whole life will be turned upside down when she meets her best friend’s son, Nix.
I loved the play between Sloan and Nix and how, even though there is a 10 year gap in their ages, it doesn’t seem to be that big of a factor in their story. Other than to use it as playful banter! It was refreshing to me that the age difference wasn’t the biggest factor but that it was the best friend’s son angle that was. Reading about them trying to hide their relationship and try to keep the gossips in the small town at bay was priceless! Also, cannot forget to mention how adorable and awesome Cora and Carl (Nix’s parents) are - they were a delightful addition to the story and added another layer to it.
This is definitely a story that you do not want to miss and Xavier did an amazing job with this book! A happily ever after with just enough angst and heat to hook you from the start and not wanting it to end!
I absolutely fell in LOVE with these characters! Sloan is a writer looking for a reset. She escapes to the ‘mitten’ where her best friend, Cora, lives with her husband, Carl. This sets up the meet cute with their son, Nix. Sloan is this spitfire of a woman who’s full of sass. Nix gives it right back to her in equal measure. Their verbal barbs fueled my love for this one. The way they banter is perfection. They just fit together, and Neal portrays this in such an effortless beautiful way. The steam... They are real, raw and passionate together. Their love at times is messy. There’s no perfect person here, but they learn as they grow together...
New to me author. This is an older woman, younger man age gap relationship, I usually prefer my age gap romances around the other way and for that reason this is only the second one I have read. This was a quick fun read with both characters being very 'human and real life', I found I could relate to both and where they were in their life.
