After Anna #2

Touch Like Breathing

Rate this book
Facing life and death situations as cops shouldn't be easier than facing each other--should it? Will and Tyler lost each other after Anna's death, but they're determined to save their friendship and partnership on the force after it's over. Good thing they're determined--it's going to take everything they've got as the pressure mounts and denial, anger and pain drives one of them to do something he'll never forgive himself for. Luckily his best friend has enough forgiveness for both of them--at least until he disappears, leaving behind a grieving partner who'll do absolutely anything to save him. Will it be enough, or is everything they've been to each other lost forever?

***This may contain spoilers for those who haven't read "After Anna" - be warned!***

When we first met Tyler and Will in "After Anna", the two men were dealing with the aftermath of the death of Will's girlfriend, Anna. She had been addicted to drugs, cheating behind Will's back and Tyler found out. Rather than deal with the problem, she overdosed, and Tyler was left feeling responsible for her death.

Add into the mix Will's depression, Tyler's guilt over feeling he caused Anna's death, and the simmering sexual attraction he feels for his partner. It all spills over and the two become lovers. But it doesn't last, and the two have trouble finding the easy friendship they shared.

In "Touch Like Breathing", Tyler and Will are still partners on the police force, and work on a case involving the kidnapping of a young teenaged girl by her stepfather. Will is close to being out of control, and the two are struggling to find a balance in their relationship after their failed romance.

The two start up again, and Tyler crosses a line within himself, and believes he hurt Will once again.

Did he? And when Will disappears, will Tyler be able to find him before the unthinkable happens?

Theda Black had brought back two of my favorite characters - Will and Tyler - and shown us again how addictive the two are. Will, with his broken heart, fear and self righteousness that make him so very brittle and edgy. And Tyler, with his deep heart and tragic sense of responsibility and guilt that renders him so very heartbreaking.

The two together could either complete or destroy each other. And mostly, it's a coin toss on any given day which way they will go.

But that's what draws me to these two men. They are so very complicated and harsh and hurt each other, but are also so bonded by their love for one another, they can't let go. They make love a struggle, neither knowing how to let their walls down and connect.

When they do, though, this story flies. And it takes me with it. Ms. Black doesn't make this easy, and that's why I love it. These two guys, they drive me crazy when they make each other crazy. I want them to be happy, but I understand why it can't be a smooth sail.

Good story. Great ending.

Fantastic job.

Second go-round of Will and Tyler, who in the end of the first book had quit one another rather abruptly. This isn't really a stand-alone book-the character's personalities are much more understandable having read the first (After Anna).
the men continue to struggle with their individual guilts, miseries and disappointments. really the 'romance' (if you can call it that) was almost secondary- even tertiary in imporance. throughout, the character's needs are out of sync with their desires- those of both themselves and on another. work- and life-related influences seem to continually tear apart any possibility of building a workable relationship, even just friendship.
"Touch Like Breathing" is an atypical romance- don't bother reading if you're looking for sentimental sweetness or two men gazing lovingly into one another's eyes. if you enjoy your characters with believable personalities, this is a great read.

The writing style was much, much better in this book than it was in After Anna. The whole plot was this tug-of-war between Ty and Will. Again the author keeps you guessing and again this took it to the extreme. Yes-No-Yes-No. Break-up; no get back together. Yes-No. Swap! No-Yes-No-Yes. We don't know why they can or cannot sleep together. Go back, go forward or change? The communication breakdown between the characters had me going in circles and then they complained about talking about it too much when they did get around to admitting something wasn't working right. I got to the point where I threw up my hands and thought they didn't deserve to be together. It was like watching middle schoolers date. On top of it all I didn't like Will at all. If I had been Ty I would have left his perpetually confused *ss and moved to the opposite coast because being around him would have put me in the looney-ben. There was one point were

I have read and loved Beneath the Neon Moon and I am really glad that I read that before reading this series.

Ok m/m romance continuing the story of two police detectives who aren't doing so well with their attraction to each other. While there was an awful lot of back and forth, on again, off again (to the extent that it seemed excessive), I still got drawn in and had to find out how things turned out.

This book was incredible more frustrating than the first one, it was a game of yes/no, yes/no, i was so frustrated that i believe to think it was better if the MCs went their own way and just finish it, but well, the author still managed to make me enjoy the HEA ending.
