Winter is coming and Thomas, being a small engine, needs to put on his snowplow. Thomas hates his snowplow; he thinks it makes him look funny, and when he has it on, the other, bigger engines tease him. But Thomas saves the day when a big storm comes up and Toby is stuck on his branch line.
Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, better known as the Rev. W. Awdry, was an English clergyman, railway enthusiast and children's author, and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, who starred in Awdry's acclaimed Railway Series.
The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles. The first book (The Three Railway Engines) was published in 1945, and by the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added further books to the series.
Takeaway: wow, the other engines are effing bullies. Gordon and James are cruel to Thomas, and Henry is no better. They make fun of him for wearing his snowplow and then of course he doesn't want to. It's a good story about peer pressure.
Great discussion of feelings, understanding differences, and friendship. Friends wanted to know how trains could get through the snow and it was a great way to start preschool conversations.
This is a cute story highlighting function over fashion. All too often kids don't want to wear something because they don't want to look silly in front of their friends, like a heavy parka or rain galoshes. In the end they may just be glad they had them. This story highlights the need to be useful instead of looking cool. After all, that heavy coat will keep you warm in winter when kids in lighter, more fashionable coats may be freezing. Those rain galoshes will keep your feet dry when a pair of cute and fancy shoes will have your feet cold, wet, and achy, making you pretty miserable. This was a cute little story with a great message.
Thomas didn't want to wear his snowplow because everyone else made fun of him when he wore it. He was one of the littlest engines and so the bigger engines didn't need a plow. But snow came in heavier than anyone thought. One of Thomas' friends get stuck on the track and only Thomas and his snowplow can rescue him. In the end he was a hero!
