Templar Chronicles #3

The Templar's Curse

Rate this book
Billi’s back. Older, wiser and more deadly than ever… Now eighteen, Billi has settled into her life as a Knights Templar, a London teen by day and ruthless hunter of the Unholy by night. Beside her is Ivan, scion of the Romanov dynasty— wealthy, handsome and devoted to Billi. She has everything she could wish for. And it's all about to be taken away. An ancient evil has risen from the deserts of the Middle East and the only way Billi can stop it is by destroying all she loves. Honour, duty and love are all in deadly conflict. Billi must learn to draw on the darkness within in her own soul, and that to defeat monsters, she must become one herself. For fans of Cassandra Clare and V.E Schwab the Templar Chronicles combine ancient mythology, secret societies and high stakes in a brutally dark world where there is no mercy asked for, and none given.

About the author

Sarwat Chadda

57 books591 followers
Sarwat Chadda has lived and traveled throughout the world, from China to Guatemala. He’s been lost in Mongolia, abandoned at a volcano in Nicaragua and hidden up a tree from a rhino in Nepal. Not to mention being detained by Homeland Security in the US and chased around Tibet by the Chinese police. Maybe he just has that sort of face.

Anyway, now he’s trying to settle in one place and stay out of trouble. Hence his new career as a writer. It’s safe, indoors and avoids any form of physical danger.

Throughout his travels, Sarwat has soaked up the myths, legends and cultures of far away places. Now, with the Ash Mistry series, he aims to bring these unfamiliar tales of ten-headed demons and blue-skinned heroes back home and put them beside the exploits of Achilles and Thor. His heroes are Prince Rama and the demon-slaying Kali. Isn't it about time you met them too?

(Review is for the whole series)

I read the first 2 books in the series when they originally came out and loved them, but didn’t realise until very recently that a 3rd book in the series had been self published. After reading the entire series, I can safely say it holds up well. Not to sound like a boomer but the first 2 books were released before book tok and the Romantasy marketing angle was even a thing, so even though there are elements of romance the focus is definitely on the storytelling and world building rather than the fantasy being sidelined by the romance, even in the 3rd book which was only published in 2021. What makes this stand out from the standard YA fantasy fare is the mythology, I haven’t read anything else that uses The Kinghts Templar and Judea-Christian myths as a basis for world building. Pair this with great writing and likeable characters, and you’re onto a winner.

The only downside is the cover art for the 2nd book completely whitewashed the character, who is half-Pakistani, and there are some grammatical errors in the 3rd self-published book, but neither of these can really be blamed on the author and didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed it.

Plot was okay, not a fan of Billi

This starts off about 2 years, or 3?, after book 2. Billi is with Ivan but Ivan is itching to get back to Russia. Billi has a choice to make but she takes on a mission outside the Templars when Ivan gets taken. All that part was okay. But I didn't like the extra sexist attitude of the Templar leadership in this one and how much of a player Billi is.
She basically goes around kissing everyone in the guise of helping them come too. She gets around while still with/rescuing Ivan, and that didn't sit well with me. She used to be a strong Templar and suddenly she doesn't know what she wants or what she does?
Erin was an interesting character though. So again, plot was decent but the characters were meh. Faustus had potential but nothing came about it. Not sure where I wanted the author to go with him, but Inwas left disappointed.
