Awesome story

Is a light hearted, friendly, lovely story about a famous writer and a baker. Beautifully written, realistic and sweet. I loved it since the first page, I definitely recommend it.

An Author meets her match!

Roselle the author goes back home to a dying mother and meets the local owner of the coffee shop Jacqui who doesn't like to read! Reading comes to people as easily as walking and talking not so for Jacqui. Reading shows us new words. Along the way we hope we enjoy the rest of the book. I did! Enjoy!

I give up... DNF at 52%.
This book caused me to fall into a reading slump. And not because this is such a terrible book, but because this is supposed to be a romance book, but the main characters have as much chemistry as someone who literally HATES reading and someone who lives off writing books can. Which, in case you're wondering, is zero. There is ZERO chemistry between them. And on top of that, everyone is shit here.

Let's start with Roselle, the least shit person in this whole story. Her mother is dying, life is not good and it's been a while for her that she's been with anyone. I get her the most. Still, why push someone's buttons DURING A DAMN DATE when you already know that this is a trigger for them? And why romanticize a personality trait that totally clashes with you? I know romantic books rely a LOT on suspended disbelief and romanization of things that in normal life would not work, but just no. Been through enough failed relationships that this just hit me wrong, but maybe it wouldn't have if it wasn't for Jaqui's personality. But we'll get to that.

Now on to Jaqui's "friend", Whatsherface (forgot her name, but it doesn't really matter). The one who is constantly pushing Jaqui to do something she has no interest in at all, just because she is totally hyped about it. And does that every time they meet. Just wonderful. What a nice person who has no consideration for her friend's feelings whatsoever and just keeps her around to have someone to gush about the latest books she's read to.

And last, Jaqui, one of the most toxic person I've ever read about in a romance book. She doesn't like reading, which in itself is damn ridiculous because SHE HAS NEVER EVEN TRIED (she tries reading in the book and stops AFTER A FEW PAGES WTF). There would be not that much wrong with that. The problem is that she is so damn insecure about this, that she literally shouts at her friend and Roselle and also throws them out of her coffee shop, because she THINKS that they are looking down on her for not liking books EVEN THOUGH ROSELLE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT THIS IS A TRIGGER FOR HER. Like, what the hell is wrong with you? She is like a female version of the insecure macho dudes with extremely fragile egos who will start a fight whenever they feel threatened or feel like they are being "looked down upon".

Let me tell you something. I am an adult woman who likes gaming, anime and fantasy, sci-fi and romance books AND on top of that, I don't drink coffee, at all. You know how much shit I got and still get for this from people (including family)? Let's just say that it's a lot. You know what I do? Nothing, cause I simply don't give a shit about other people's opinion on things I like to do. Now obviously if those things would be heinous acts of violence or drug abuse, that would be different, but having harmless likes and dislikes is okay. But shouting at people cause you THINK they look down on you for your likes/dislikes is just toxic and definitely not okay.

And continuing the whole romance after that scene happened just made me sad for Roselle. Jaqui is a real POS who needs therapy for her anger issues and to figure out why she THINKS people belittle her for her dislike. And maybe she should stop hanging out with bookworms and find herself friends who are more like her.

But what she should not do is be love interest of an author in a romance book. Not with this personality at least and not after that outburst. Roselle can and should do better than this parade of red flags, even if it would be just one night. I don't think any sane person would willingly sleep with someone who screamed their head off in public and threw them out of their coffee shop anyways. Just... No.

An absolutely perfect book title. A lead character that doesn't like books/reading! Then I got into the storyline with slow romance, humor, angst and sex and was turned upside down.
Main characters Jacqui (coffee shop owner) and Roselle (writer) are like oil and water. The former has no interest at all in anything to do with reading books but the start to their odd relationship comes over a book reading scheduled at the coffee shop. Well fleshed out supporting characters include Gabby who shines as the meddlesome best friend and Max, Roselle's brother. They were skillfully woven into the plot which had me hooked. What should be a no strings attached fling becomes much more. Without disclosing spoilers - this book was quite an education for me. Thank you Ms. Hartfield for enlightening me and widening my minds eye while I enjoyed a romance between two women just meant to be together.
Finally to steal a quote from the book "If you're reading a novel, you're putting yourself in someone else's head and trying to understand their experiences." I highly recommend with 5 stars.

I rec'd an ARC through Booksprout and this is an unbiased, voluntary review.

I’m kinda salty about being “tricked” into reading this book. I only picked it up because of aphantasia representation, or so I thought it had. The whole time Roselle and Jacqui having a love-hate relationship, I had the same thing with this book.
I was thinking it’s a 3.5/5 book but round down since it’s definitely not a 4-star book to me. But then the more I think and process about the book, the less I liked it. So it’s more like a rounded down 2.5/5 book for me.

The pace and timing of this book were out of wack for me. Once in a while I would be confused whether I skipped a chapter or two because the main characters’ relationship would change 180o. I stopped the book around 65% point to sleep, and when I picked it up again the next day, I thought I was reading another different book.
Idk I kinda wish I never read this and if I can, forget about the whole thing.

Opposites attract

Jacqui is a small town woman, stable, reliable and hard working. Roselle is passionate about her work as an author and kind of lost. Together they make a beautiful couple and a strong unit. This was a fun read. I look forward to more by Kim Hartfield.

2 hours past reading this book, when I would have already gone on to the next, I can't seem to do it. I keep thinking of the book and a topic brought up towards the end. I am still baffled and learned something new. I have been Google searching and reading about the differences. So definitely worth the 5 stars. Made me think!!!

Great title!

The main characters in this book couldn't be more different. Sadly, Roselle, a popular romance author had only returned to her hometown to help her brother Max care for their ailing mom. Jacqui, a coffee shop owner and baker, doesn't like to read, but her best friend Gabby is a librarian who is enamored with Roselle's books. Imagine what happens when these ladies all come face-to-face! Meddlesome Gabby is a hoot and is very much needed for levity in this story. Roselle, of course, cannot understand why anyone would not like reading. She and Jacqui are like oil and water. How could they ever get along? But Jacqui relents and agrees to host Roselle in an author's reading event. As J&R work through their "getting to know you" phase, Roselle gets a brilliant idea to write a book about an author falling for a baker. Will real life mimic this romance novel? Will Jacqui become her muse?

I've only read a few of Kim's books but I like her writing style and the subject t matter she tackles, full of honesty and heart. I heartily recommend this author!

Great Read!

I loved the book and it’s heartbreaking yet heartwarming story. Roselle, an author who had a couple of really good books printed and then a couple of subpar follow ups, comes home to help her brother with their dying mother. Jacqui, a coffee shop owner, who never read a book, after listening to her best friend, invites Roselle to do a reading at her coffee shop while she is in town. As the story unfolds, Roselle and Jacqui develop an attraction for each other. Roselle starts writing again, with Jacqui as her muse. As they are planning the event that will bring in some heavier business to the coffee shop, their relationship turns sexual and since Roselle is returning to New York shortly, that is all it could be. But things take a turn and suddenly they are both faced with a reality neither was ready for. This story was so sweet and had a tender quality which made it enjoyable to read. Kim Hartfield does that with her characters.

It's hard to review this book without any spoilers! You know what we say, that opposites attract each other? Well that's definitely the case here.
I absolutely loved that it was like reading a "Russian dolls" novel (or what I call "the Inception effect", but with writing instead of dreaming). I'm still wondering whether the book inside this book is about an author writing a book about... You got the idea ^^
I absolutely loved that both main characters are not perfect, they both have their flaws with makes them very real. And the chemistry between these two... Phew!
There's some angst too, but that's ok because it's not angst just for angst, it's important for the story and everything makes sense.
To conclude: 100% recommended!

This is one such story with a similar outline as a few others I've read, like the whole 'female writer falls for their opposite' but it is one that stands out because of the flushed-out characters and nice story. Not gonna find so much erotic scenes in this one, if that's what you're looking for go elsewhere, but I will concede that even as it's more of a romantic, slow-burn story first-and-foremost, there are some small nice intimate moments sprinkled in between our two Mc's. It is a deceptively complex story, one with a character who doesn't like books or reading really, and another who is a writer and gets paid to read and write.

A well known romance novelist and a baker who doesn’t like books are an unusual pair - but a sweet treat to read about

Sometimes differences do make people more attractive

Finding out more about themselves and each other as the novelist faces the rnd of her mother’s life - exceptional. A bit scary as well since she hadn’t shared that detail

Fascinating connections from different perspectives

Darling and meta

I can actually see these people together. That's... a big deal. They're so fussy and real together! And the meta is a big draw for me: a lesbian romance about a lesbian romance writer writing a lesbian romance featuring her thinly veiled budding romance with a baker OMG... GLORIOUS!

An Interesting Twist

In a way this is a book within a book. No, I'm not going to go into detail about that comment. You'll have to read it and form your own opinion. Personally, I found the characters interesting and likeable from the beginning. Their journey together is believable and realistic. Such an exciting first date too! But nothing is perfect without trials and tribulations. This is a great book; read it now.

Good book

Jacqui a woman who just did not like to read books, when one of her friends tried to get her to read. On the back of the book cover was a picture of the author. Rochelle an author was in her home town. Offering to do a reading of her book, to find out Jacqui did not like books inspired her. Can two people of different aspects have a relationship? A sweet read and realizing they need each other

She has gone home to look after her mother where she also finds the prefect person to write a story about. What if she falls for them? What then? Can it have a happy ending? See how they get on

Good Story!

I really enjoyed this story. Jacqui is a good person with a big chip on her shoulder. Lucky for her, Roselle can see the person under that chip. Sweet story!
