Shug's Daddy

Rate this book
Grey
I was just a divorced, small-town, hardware store owner, and the man most people considered a gentleman. A slip up in my strict routine would send the town gossips into a frenzy. Yet I'd grown up in that town and everyone knew everyone. No secrets were safe, but I carried one that would send my world into chaos if I let it. I was falling for a town transplant and one of my best friends, Sugar. He was everything I wasn't. Spontaneous, fun, and knew exactly who he was. What would he see in a boring man like me?
 Sugar(Shug)
I was that fat, nonbinary person who hadn't known the inside of a closet in my life. With a mom like mine, she taught me to never live with regrets, but I had a massive one. I fell in love with my straight, gentlemanly best friend. Grey was everything I wasn't. Thankfully, he was clueless, but our shared friend group wasn't. How long could our friends stay silent in a town as small as ours?

I don’t think I’ve ever DNF’d at 85% in a book but here we are.

The first half was great. Fun characters and sweet set up. But what I look for in a bi-awakening, like the actual awakening part? Wasn’t there. He just went “ope I like a man and all of his parts and I’m a daddy now.” The whole second half of the book was like it was about two completely different characters.

Skimmed to the end and was just missing the HEA for the two people I read in the first half. 🤷🏻

This book was so damn sweet and I absolutely loved that. I can read stuff filled with drama but sometimes you just want something heart warming that will make you go “awwww” out loud. That’s what this book did to me.

Grey is an almost-40 straight divorced dude who is quiet and likes to keep to himself. Sugar aka Shug is the femme outgoing outspoken 31-year-old friend of Grey. They are pretty much opposites but their friendship just works. Shug brings Grey out of his shell more than anyone else does and Shug is secretly in love with him.

Grey never really thought of Shug that way, or at least he didn’t realize he felt that way for him, until he felt a bit possessive over him one night at Shug’s birthday. Then when Shug got sick, Grey came over to take care of him and it all changed. Pretty abruptly, actually. Grey started calling Shug “baby” all of a sudden and his touches became more than the friendly-affectionate type they had been before. They were pretty sexual. I felt it kinda came out of nowhere and I would’ve liked to have Grey’s POV touch more on what he was thinking/feeling before he went there. Because he basically got a hard-on, rubbed against Shug’s ass, then kissed him in his kitchen pretty suddenly. I was like... whoa. Okay, we’re going there already.

Grey had previously acted like a caring person, he liked to do things for people and take care of them, but when his Daddy side came out it was like wooooow. I liked it.

The only other thing I had a complaint about was that we didn’t get to read any of the first-time sexual scenes. We didn’t get the first time Grey gave a blowjob, just got told it happened. And the first time they had anal sex? That wasn’t there and we weren’t even really told about it. We just got a quickie fuck in the back room of Grey’s store about a month into their relationship and it wasn’t the first time they had fucked. I would’ve preferred a longer drawn out scene of their first time, honestly. It would’ve felt more special and romantic-like to match the type of relationship they had building up in this book.

But other than that, I really enjoyed it. I liked that Shug was a bigger boy and that Grey loved that about him. Also for the fact that they loved each other for exactly who the other was and didn’t want them to change one bit. So cuuuute.

This is such a sweet book, that has almost negative angst and fantastic fat rep. I feel sure the author is or at some time has been fat, because the way they write about Shug, as well as Grey’s reaction to Shug’s body is so tender and . . . idealistic? I took a class about writing fat bodies recently, and this is a great example of how to write about a fat character that doesn't slip into tired negative stereotypes or borderline fetishization.

I will caveat that this book has some style issues and probably could use a closer copy-edit, but I’m so happy to see stories like this out in the world. It’s, like, tremulously full of hope and gives ME hope we’ll see more body diversity in all types of romance and literature. Though it veered into treacly territory at times and one shouldn't look for realism within these pages, I was just * clutches heart * . . . some of the descriptions of how they connected were just so frickin’ LOVELY. (Tho I wasn’t a huge fan of the formerly straight guy frequently reiterating that Shug’s gender didn’t matter . . . I get what the author was trying to do, but I think that point could have been downplayed or handled more . . . sensitively? In any case, it’s a small thing in the grand scheme.) Despite my asterisks, if you are at all interested, I highly recommend it.

FIVE STAR FAT REP! 4⭐ story.

I need so many more romance books with fat main characters. You can tell that the author either is fat or has been fat by the way that they wrote Shug and all of the his experiences with his body. It was just so so well done and it balanced the line of self-love while also having minor moments of I don't want to say like body image issues, but just general concerns about being a fat person. It just felt super realistic.

Now that being said I wanted this book to be longer and I wanted more communication. They literally go from friends to lovers in the blink of an eye without really talking about it and then go into the daddy kink without any sort of conversation. Not to mention that Grey has presumably been straight for his entire life and you're telling me that there were no moments of heteronormative panic when he realized he was attracted to a femme non-binary man? Maybe there weren't and this book just says fuck it to heteronormative ideals and gender binaries because it totally does, but it didn't quite feel realistic. I kind of needed them to talk a little bit more.

I also am a little bit salty that we missed all of their first scenes. Like we miss all their first sex scenes and conversations and all of a sudden there's these big jumps in time where things have already happened. You can't do that to me. That was rude. I want to know what happened and how it all went down.

Brief talk about the non-binary representation. Shug is a fat non-binary and that is only mentioned in the book summary. I kind of wished they had touched more about gender labels in the story but I also understand why they didn't. I think so often we have this view of non-binary as an androgynous person who uses they them and that is an unhelpful and sometimes dangerous thinking. Because non-binary can look like anyone and non-binary people don't owe you androgyny and having a character that identified as non-binary but still used he/him pronouns and masculine terms like boy and man was nice to see. I also want to make a note that This is an own voices written non-binary story.

As a whole this is a very sweet and fluffy book. It's relatively short, under 200 pages and will just give you lots of happy queer vibes. There's no homophobia and there's no transphobia and it's just everyone is happy. Everyone is happy and there's lots of queer people and there's just a ton of queer representation. If you are in need of a fluff story, you can't go wrong with this one.

A delightful surprise

This was a new to me author that I read on a whim. Boy am I glad I did! I absolutely adored Shug and Grey.

I love Daddy kink and this didn’t disappoint. I know a lot of Daddy books have to go through the whole explanation of what being a Daddy or Boy means. I was pleasantly surprised that this book worked under the assumption that we already know. No wasted words on explanations I’ve read a hundred times.

Grey was a wonderful Daddy to Shug. He took care of Shug whiteout ever questioning why he wanted to in the first place. Shug was everything I love in a boy. Sweet, sassy, femme and not afraid to rock a skirt and heels. I loved their relationship.

My only small pet peeve? Grey just realized he’s either bi or a variant thereof. I wish we had had on page action of the first time they went all the way. I feel like that would have been significant to Grey and Shug.

Super low angst, medium heat (Grey has a super yummy filthy mouth) and overall sweet read. Definitely worth the read.

Imperfect, but loved.

This gets all the stars just for not throwing in some blatantly homophobic character or scene. Grey's experience growing up was just like mine and I loved reading a story like this. Shug and Grey are beautiful together. The only hiccup, for me, was Grey's abrupt shift from gentleman friend to dirty Daddy. I enjoyed it overall, but it really came out of nowhere despite the title of this book. There are a few moments where it just feels out of place and the author makes a few pointed efforts to make it fit the story but that just draws attention to the fact that that plot point lacks a natural progression in the story. I feel like you have to overlook a few little things for this to work and I'm very willing to put those blinders on to enjoy this. It has definitely put the author on my radar and I hope Drew's story will be told in the future.

oh my, Shug and Gray are my new favorite. I loved this book so much I have now read it twice and I am thinking of going in for a third time. The book was so great to read. The storyline was awesome and kept me engaged thru throughout the whole book. Oh, the charters I want to move I want to shug's and Gray's new best friend and hang out with them all the time. I need so many more books just like this one.

I just fell in love with Shug, he's a cute, funny, femme, who happens to be in love with the town's friendliest, most helpful man, Grey, a burly, hairy hunk and straight. Delightful but sometimes a little sad it's the story of two men dancing around each other, one so in love and the other totally oblivious, amusing for us to read but painful for poor Shug. My first with this author and it seems to be her first mm story, I hope she writes more, very enjoyable read with vivid characters.

Siobhan Smile hit another one out of the park. A no-angst, almost a story of fluff. I loved the characters. Confident with a bit of sass, Shug was a joy to read. Grey was the perfect Daddy. He figured out who he wanted and gender wasn't even blip his radar. That was awesome. A bi-awakening/OFY with no internal struggle or self recriminations. This book definitely hits all the sweet spots.

Best story I’ve read in a while!

This was my first time reading this author’s work and it completely blew me away. There were a few grammatical errors, but otherwise, the storyline made sense. I loved the fact that Shug was femme, but didn’t meet the “regular” criteria. I wouldn’t mind reading about Drew in second book though…

Sometimes a book just isn't for you. I think this book requires both being in the mood for an extremely lighthearted read and a willingness to suspend all disbelief. I possess neither this week. I just couldn't buy into the story or connect with the characters. And almost halfway through, it's extremely clear how this one is going to play out. It's a pass for me. DNF. No rating.

Definitely on the sweet side if you a looking for a low angst, sweet, romantic story. The characters are flawed but perfect for each other. It was a blast to see them becoming what they did. It's a really good book.

Another new author

Something just caught my attention on the synopsis of this book. I’m really glad, it had a really detailed story, the build of a relationship not an instalove. I liked the dynamic and the complete confidence of being yourself. Will reread.

3.5☆ for me... Frequent, awkward wording choices, grammatical errors, and typos make me wonder if this is a new author or an author for whom English isn'ta first language, and yet despite that, it was a sweet, enjoyable story that I'm glad I read 😊

Real Love

A really good portrayal of body positivity without over doing it. The writing allows you to see how to enjoy a different body type in a natural, unforced way. You can appreciate his normal body without using the term fat. It really normalized what is most body types.

Wow...

I don't know what I expected but this blew any preconceived idea I had out of the water. The slow burn has never been a favorite of mine but I will be reading this again. What they find is the kind of love that everyone wants...

Decent story

It was an okay read. Although it needs cleaning up. The characters were pretty standard and very low angst plot.

Beautiful

Love the characters. Love comes from many shapes and sizes. We are not all models. Some of us are Shugs and some of us are Grey. We all want love.

4.5 Stars!

I enjoyed this one and didn't want to set it down once I started reading it. It is a sweet, low angst story, and the characters were great. Grey thinks he's a boring guy, but really he is wonderful. He accepts people as they are and is humble and down-to-earth. He's always there for his friends. Shug was an amazing character too; I loved his confidence and ability to be true to himself.

These two have been friends for a long time before Grey starts to see Shug as someone he could be romantically involved with. I liked how the story evolved and how Grey came to appreciate how his feelings were changing and growing. I loved seeing him get shaken out of his normal routines and feeling passionate about someone for the first time. I was happy that Grey was very determined once he set his mind on being with Shug and that he made his intentions clear. I totally understood how Shug felt when Grey, seemingly, was suddenly interested in him. I was glad that Grey helped reassure him and made sure to show Shug that he wasn't going to hide their relationship. Once these two get together, they are definitely hot, and Grey shows a side of himself that no one really knew about before.

I loved Grey's best friend, Drew, as well as all their other friends. I was happy to see them supportive of Grey and Shug's relationship and even trying to play matchmaker earlier in the story. I hope the author decides to write a story for Drew at some point, he needs a HEA too.

Suupper sweet, love caring daddy. I could have had just a bit of more angst. It didn’t need it but just a bit more tension, it’s a personal preference. Love it!
