As I write a review for this book for the second time, I find that I am still completely in love with it. I have loved Sherrilyn Kenyon's writing for a long time and I know that she will almost always give me a wonderful book. I have not read much by Dianna Love, but she works well with Sherrilyn Kenyon, in my opinion.

I have been having a problem lately with heroines--I have been hating them all. I read Phantom of the Night, the previous BAD Agency book, before I reread this book and that brought me out of my funk, thank goodness. I wanted to reread this book after I finished PotN, but I think I also did this just so that I would know I was reading about a good heroine. Thank you for not letting me down!

I continue to love every character in this book and find that they are just as wonderfully complex as I found them before. Well, they are not complex complex, but they have layers to them that I enjoyed reading about again: Carlos, the former Anguis soldier who turned his back on his "family" to protect those he loves; Gabrielle, the woman who constantly risks her life to help those who need it when no one every bothered to do the same for her; Korbin, the loyal scoundrel; Rae, the sassy, capable female of the team; Gotthard, the computer genius; Linette, the woman who risks her life everyday as she serves a group she never wanted a part of; Hunter, the sadly misunderstood aristocrat; Joe and Tee, the fearless and frightening leaders of the agency; and Retter, who still remains a sexy mystery to me. Like I said, complex.

I still love the plotline and I was still able to be surprised at parts. It was great to revisit an adventure that I loved the first time around and enjoyed even more on the second go-round. But then, I always enjoy Sherrilyn Kenyon's plotlines, so that's not really a new discovery for me.

If I've never said so before, I highly recommend the BAD Agency series. It's a great romantic suspense series, and it's a nice change from all the paranormal, historical, and contemporary romance.

What a fascinating story! As with every Kenyon novel, I adore the story, love the characters, am enthralled with the writing, and enraptured by the creativity. Such is, of course, the case with Whispered Lies.

The elemental plot of the book was, at times, a bit hard to follow. This is the only criticism I can make against this novel, but it is a shallow one at that. In truth, the book's story deals with espionage and tyrannical plotting against America. It has a huge conspiracy feel to the plot, as does the actual series concept. A huge surprise, though, formed at the end of this novel, one that was almost creepy, sad, and scary. It deals with the antagonists and occurs at the end of the story, and such was a disturbing insight into the antagonist Vestavia. Love and Kenyon seem to have a knack for peppering their stories with unexpected twists and turns that the reader doesn't see coming. These always ensure a satisfying ending! As such, because of this and more, my mild irritation over the seemingly hard-to-follow story issues is subdued, especially when considering how fascinating the characters were!

Carlos has been a favorite character of mines since Bad Attitude, though in Whispered Lies we get a unique look at his character. In his previous appearances, he is depicted as an extremely care-free man, capable but relaxed. In this story, he is illustrated in an entirely new light. He has a massive depth of feeling and emotion, and his back story is diverse, elaborate, and entirely influential on who he is and the problems he faces today.

Gabrielle is just as diverse. Her past marks her, and affects her current situation. She is a strong female, a remarkable heroine. I really admired her strength and her intelligence. Her determination and passion for those she loves was almost tangible, and her devotion to what she feels is right was amazing. No two characters could've been more perfect for one another, and this book was all the better for such fact!

I adore Kenyon's writing, and when paired with Love, the two authoress are unstoppable. One is guaranteed for a story with meat to it, as well as a shocking amount of plot twists and unexpected developments in the story. Another wonderful read by yet another wonderful writing-duo!

#7 B.A.D. (Bureau of American Defense) - Romantic Suspense

Carlos Delgado / Gabrielle Saxe

Carlos Delgado, BAD operative with a hidden past, finds his secrets threatened when BAD seeks to track down Mirage, a mysterious computer expert who has been sending valuable tips on terrorists and bad guys to law enforcement.

Gabrielle Sax has been living in hiding for years, trying to evade a killer. Her computer expertise enables her to identify messages and plans from various evil groups and people, which she anonymously passes along to police agencies.

Whispered Lies has several plots and sub-plots simultaneously unfolding, which Kenyon and Love manage well, as far as keeping the reader "along for the ride" without becoming confused at the complexity.

Carlos is sexy, dangerous and walks a tightrope ... he is committed to BAD and chasing the worst of the bad guys, but he has secrets to protect. Carlos's description brought to mind Antonio Banderas, which I'm sure contributed to my reading enjoyment ;-)

One story theme that begins in #6 Phantom of the Night is continued in this #7 -- it's a bit far fetched, but very compelling ... and we'll have to wait for #8 to see what happens next!

I liked seeing many of the very lively, highly intriguing BAD operatives we've met in previous books, and think we meet a few new faces.

The BAD series is a combination of short stories in various anthologies and a few full length novels. I absolutely could not find a listing on Kenyon or Love's site (grrr!) or easily at amazon. Very annoying.

Kenyon's super popular paranormals for me are just ... I can't read them. But something about her non-paranormals are like chocolate! Bring on #8 BAD!

WOW. Honestly it took me a few chapters to get into this book. I did not have to force myself to read it but there were places were I felt it lagged a bit. As I contiuned though I was drawn into Carolos's and Gabrielle's life.
They are from different sides of the world, and they both have a familiar background.
Carlos accidentially is thrown into Gabrielle's life. Carlos is black ops just getting back from a mission when he is told to look for and IT tech.
Gabrielle is an IT tech hiding from everyone in the world, but just my doing one thing her life is put in danger and she is thrown into the arms of Carlos.
It is a struggle for them to learn about trust and love.
I hope there is a follow up to this one becuase the book left it open for it to be

It pains me to say that I did not like this book so much that I couldn't even finish it. I hate saying that but I read 157 pages of the book and it was not holding my attention.
This book was so different, I think, from any other Sherrilyn Kenyon books that I've read. I really haven't cared for the books where Kenyon and Dianna Love have partnered up. So far, a majority of the Sherrilyn Kenyon/Dianna Love books that I've read, I haven't liked most of them.
I really wanted to like this book I loved Carlos in previous books. He was always the fun character that always had a joke about everything. But in this book he was all business. All work and no play sort of mentality. Plus he seemed really cruel to Gabrielle. Plus I felt bad for her throughout the book. She was a simple girl trying to do the right thing and protect innocent people from getting hurt and the BAD agents are punishing her for that simple fact. Believing that she has some hidden motive behind her helping them. This seriously pissed me off.
I feel like I have given this book a good chance to get interesting but at the same time I feel like I didn't give it a real chance to get my interest. I found myself skipping ahead in the story to see if they ever let her go and found they never really did and so that's when I really decided to put the book down. I've read other reviews of people who liked the book and some that are like me and didn't care for it so much. I'll pick this book up again when I feel like I'll be in the mood to really try and get through the book so I can read the next one. But until then this book shall remain on my "couldn't finish" shelf.

Even though this particular series keeps popping up on PNR genre lists and amazon.com PNR listmania fun, this is not what I would call a PNR. My only explanation I can come up with would be because the big name at the top of the book...pause for effect... Sherrilyn Kenyon is one of the masters of that genre. So, now that we cleared that up, I have stepped out of my usual genre and dabbled in a bit of romance. PJ Fact #69 sugar and spice romance and chick lit kind of bores me. This one wasn't that bad though, luckily Kenyon has the flavor that gives this particular romance a little more spice than the usual cut and dry romance that is peddled by authors such as Roberts and *gasp* Sparks. There was a bit of violence that kept me interested, and the male protagonist was hotter than hot...but Gabrielle the heroine just left me feeling, well like I should join a feminist movement or something. Which is my usual reaction to romance heroines. Read More

This book is ridiculous, but it's pretty much exactly what the back-cover blurb promises, so if you picked it up, you probably won't mind.

Specific ridiculous points: Carlos Delgado works for the Bureau of America Defence. Yes, that's right, he works for BAD. If you can view a large image of the cover, you'll see it advertises itself as "A BAD AGENCY NOVEL" which does not necessarily sound like an endorsement. The cheesiness does not stop there; BAD is a secret organization, so secret that the CIA and FBI don't know about it. It's not quite clear if it's actually governmet, or if they're super-sekrit extra-legal proactive vigilates.

I enjoyed this book, but I wish that I had read the Dianna Love/Sherrilyn Kenyon style of these BAD books before the ones written simply by Sherrilyn Kenyon because I loved the original books so much and these that are collaborations just don't match up.

Don't get me wrong, they are VERY good, but they just don't seem to have the character connections that the first books had. They are full of suspense and intrigue which, while somewhat predictable, are very good and I can see how these books fit a more mainstream mold. I just prefer the style/humor of the original BAD books.

I really did love Carlos' story though....

My rating for this book is 4.0 stars.

When I initially read the back cover I knew there would be some romance in the book but I was really interested in the plot.

I love the original "Thriller" plot - there were some fun twists and for a good part of the time, the plot moved quickly with a lot of action.

However, there is as much time spent on the sexual tension between Gabrielle and Carlos. I can only read so much of "I want him", "No, I don't" , "But, he doesn't want me" and "I want her", "But I shouldn't" UGH!

I found that Carlos was a pretty solid character. However, Gabrielle, I just couldn't wrap my head around - her intelligence and upbringing hardly plays into her character. Also, she was like someone turning a light switch on and off - fearful and mousy one minute and strong the next minute.

This is the first book I have read by Sherrilyn Kenyon and it looks like her style - just not mine.

audiobook (Libby) - interesting story surrounding a dark web hacker, a hidden government agency and a mafia crime family. How the MFC doesn't recognize that the MMC is family to the people who bombed her mother's bus is a bit unreal given her abilities but glad that they end up HAE in the end. I feel like this could have been better with a bit more recognition up front that he at least was a part of that crime family maybe not the nephew of the bomber and his lie that he was directly responsible for the bombing but seems like a big thing for her to not know given her skill set is supposed to be so great.

The whole concept of B.A.D. As an organization is hard for me to swallow but admittedly I haven’t read the three previous books in the series, maybe that would sell it for me. The story was interesting and the jet setting kind of fun, but the big reveal of Carlos’ true identity was a bit obvious and you would have to be blind not to pick up on the heavy handed hints.

It was such an average read that I couldn't, in good conscience, give it a higher rating. The writing was well done and the character decent but I struggled to finish because I quickly lost interest. It was incapable of keeping my attention for long, but overall, wasn't too bad. Just a little boring.

Three stories of an agency similar to the CIA and FBI, but off the chart and anonymous.
The best was: Carlos find Mirage, but also gains more than he bargained for. Surprise, Mirage, finds that everyone has secrets.
Couldn't put it down. Nice of Kenyon to such strong plots.

This was an intriguing mystery, action story, and romance all rolled into one. It sent you down many different paths - still keeping the final resolution completely a surprise - and made you root for the characters even when things looked their darkest.

Ugh! I can’t believe this got such great ratings from other readers
Everything went wrong for me with this novel. The characters were flat and trite. The prose was stilted, and the plot was far fetched and unbelievable even for escapist reading.

Guess I didn't record this...

Third in the B.A.D. romance suspense series. The couple focus is on Gabrielle Tynte Saxe and Carlos Delgado/Alejandro Durand.

My Take
It's scary to think there could well be organizations like the Fratelli or the Angeli. But then power is very enticing and the Angeli's primary purpose "sounds" good if much too dictatorial and without any hope for real success. A lovely concept, but appalling execution.

I find it hard to believe that Gabrielle, supposedly such a hotshot computer techie, would be so easily found.

Definitely lots of action in bed and out as Carlos and Gabrielle escape one attack after another. It's sweet as they each come to know each other. I liked that Kenyon and Love kept both parties' reservations about their future realistic instead of getting all gushy and expectant. I also liked how Carlos solved the Roberto problem. Very neat and tidy.

The Story
Mirage, an unknown informant, has been feeding accurate information to federal agencies including B.A.D. for some time now. And Joe has had enough. He wants to know who is hiding behind the name---informers always have an angle---and it's now Carlos' job to bring her in.

But it all goes wrong when he and Lee arrive at Mirage's address. Three kidnappings in a row, by three different groups. The last is almost the worst, promising a living death unless Gabrielle can convince B.A.D. that she can be an asset.

And there is something wrong at the École d'Ascension for it cannot be a coincidence that so many young girls go missing from the school. With its tight security, no B.A.D. agent will be able to penetrate its doors. The question is, does Gabrielle work for the Anguis? The Fratelli? Will she betray Carlos to his father?

The Characters
Carlos Delgado used to be Alejandro Anguis. The son of a notorious drug runner and weapons dealer in South America. Fellow agents at B.A.D. include Retter; Korbin Maximum, adrenaline junkie, insertion specialist, and resident lothario working his way through the alphabet; Reagan "Rae" Graham is quite lethal and everyone is hoping that she and Korbin will just get a room; Gotthard Heinrich is the big guy on the team and their computer specialist with a bad marriage; Alex "Sandman" Sanderson is an assault weatherman. Hunter Wesley Thornton-Payne III is an arrogant aristocrat, but very good at his job. It's just that no one wants anything to do with him. Joe Q. Public is their boss; Tee is his assistant and lover.

Mirage, a.k.a., Gabrielle Tynte Saxe, is a terrified mess hiding from her nasty ex-husband Roberto Delacourte and determined on vengeance for her mother's death. She is a former student at the École d'Ascension in France where Pierre Prudhomme is an assistant for the school's head Monsieur LaCrosse. Linette is an old schoolfriend of Gabrielle's who went missing years ago. Babette is Gabrielle's sister. And a student at the École.

Durand Anguis is the head of an organized crime family in South America and very dangerous to cross---and Carlos' father. Maria is Carlos' sister with the crippled son Eduardo; Durand hates that she and her son are so timid, so submissive. Julio is his most trusted soldier. Ferdinand is another.

Vestavia, a.k.a., DEA Special Agent Robert Brady, is an associate using Durand to plot terrorism. He is also one of the Fratelli and the Angeli, an even more secret organization. Josie Silversteen was originally groomed to serve the Fratelli sexually, but Vestavia chose to train her for fieldwork and she is now a special agent with the DEA.

Baby Face Jones is an electronics felon who takes on sidejobs...like picking up Mirage. Turga is a poacher; he steps in at the last minute with his men to take what another has found.

The Cover
The cover is black and gold-red holograms for the authors' names, the title, and the snake twined 'round the dagger.

The title could refer to all the lies that are floating throughout this story: Gabrielle's keeping her ex's threats to herself, Carlos hiding from his father, Marie and Eduardo keeping their secrets from Durand, the more subtle threat from B.A.D. to Gabrielle's future, or it could simply be a veiled reference to Mirage and his/her method of contacting law enforcement with tips…

Why I read: Offered for review by the publisher.

Favorite Quote: “Exceptional is too understated for you. I’ll have to search for a better word.”

Gabrielle Saxe has led a lonely life. She went to an elite boarding school in France, only to have her roommate disappear. She was close to her roommate, refusing to believe she disappeared under normal circumstances. Some years later, she marries a Hollywood star, only to find he is extremely cruel and violent. They divorce after six months, and she goes into seclusion afraid for her life. While in seclusion, she learns the ropes of the internet and becomes known as “Mirage” a secret informant for many government agencies. She makes contacts in South America and when people go missing, she leaves tips to help these agencies give the kidnapped victims a chance at survival. She moves around frequently, and is currently in Peach City Georgia – but her anonymity runs out.

She received a note from her old roommate, in code they created while rooming together. The note tells of a girl that has been taken, and Gabrielle goes through great risks to get this information into the right channels. But this time, she has been tracked – by more than one person.

Carlos Delgado works for the super secret Bureau of American Defense, or B.A.D. and wants nothing more than to take the Fratelli, a terrorist group down. After going on a mission to save the girl left from a tip from Mirage, they get a break and find out where she lives. When he shows up, someone is already there to get her. He must convince Gabrielle he is the secret man to trust, as he helps her get to safety and then off to investigate the very evil players at work in the Fratelli.

Whispered Lies was a nice change of pace– I love the secret agents, gun battles, and all the secrets everyone holds. My favorite part of the book is the romance that develops between Carlos and Gabrielle. Now this is not just because I like romance, but because their romance makes sense. They are not strangers, hiding with gunfire in the background making out. They come to semi-trust each other, and the romance blossoms from there. Gabrielle has not had much human contact for years, and is desperate for Carols’ touch. For Carlos, Gabrielle becomes not the perpetrator, but someone he wants to see cleared and prove to everyone she is not on the evil side. The other teammates make an appearance, all very alpha and lethal. The one female teammate holds her own amongst the men and I admired her character.

There are two things that bothered me with this book. First, I had a difficult time keeping everyone straight. There are a lot of players in this book – both good and bad, and many times I found myself flipping backwards to remember who someone was. More than that, I had a hard time believing Gabrielle became this mastermind internet person. In the beginning of the book you are just told she went to a fancy boarding school, and married and divorced a creepy, yet rich guy. Now in seclusion, she can hack into sites and leave the highest government agencies information? It is not until later on that it is revealed Gabrielle is a genius. I wanted more time devoted to this aspect and how she developed these super skills.

Overall, Whispered Lies is a fun romantic suspense with lots of tension and action.
