A PIECE OF HISTORY, WAR IS HELL.

On July 12, 2022, I took a tour of Culloden Battlefield. It was a beautiful, sunny day, so different than the day the battle was fought on April 16, 1746 at noon in driving rain. The battle lasted less than an hour. So many were killed. "About 1,256 Jacobites were dead, a similar number were wounded, 376 prisoners were taken. Government forces suffered only around 50 fatalities, less than 300 wounded."

We had a docent who presented talks about the battle, led us to different areas of the battle field, spoke about what occurred to a group of people, a lady, she was excellent. The tour ended at four.

We went inside the the visitor's center, bought books written by the National Trust for Scotland. The book goes back in time as to what occurred long before and caused the anger and hate among so many groups to hate each other. Bonnie Prince Charlie felt as a Jacobite and a Stuart, he should lead the Highlanders, the British Group has no right to these lands. The Duke of Cumberland was pitted against the Jacobites.

The book goes into much detail, what was before, what came after. The book contains many portraits of so many people involved in this war. War will never stop. Too many disagreements, too much politics, too many feel they are right and should win what they want.

Many beautiful paintings, some neat Penicuit sketches, other drawings and sketches plus good photographs of the battlefields. A nice, well done book.

Archaeology is being done at Culloden. Metal survey detectors are being used to find "much related items to the battle." The battlefield is being made to look as it was on that fateful battle so important to Scotland. People all come to see a piece of history and bring their children and other family members. This is all needed. History should never be forgotten.

Very nice pictorial guide to the Culloden Moor site, along with an overview of the key figures and events. It's primarily intended as a souvenir of one's visit, and is an admirable edition to one's library in that regard.

An interesting little book telling of the events which led up to, the actual battle, and aftermath at Culloden. It contained lots of pictures and a bit at the end saying what preservation has taken place and the present day facilities at the site. I visited on a cold November when the sleet was driving across the open field sideways. Fascinating and haunting -place!

I bought this at the Culloden Visitor Centre. It's a good introduction to the lead up to and the battle of Culloden.

Received in a goody bag as part of the VIP tour experience won by my mum in a Highland Hospice raffle.

This book retails in the visitor centre for £5 but is probably worth double the price.

This is more like a book than the usual visitor guide, with lots of reading. This is likely because so much of the story of Culloden is not the battle itself or even the location but the background and history of the conflict.

This rich history of royal succession, religious and cultural civil war, and the Jacobite rebellions, as well as the cult of personality and romantic historicism surrounding Bonnie Prince Charlie provides a rich seam of history to write about. All of which is superbly covered, in detail but in a way those unfamiliar with the history will quickly understand.

Then you have the history of the battle site of Drumossie moor itself, from the positioning of the two armies and where they fought through the archaeology and treatment of the site in the years after the battle right up until today and the efforts of restoration and preservation.

There is so much to discover about Culloden, and this guide book is not only a fantastic place to start but also comprehensive enough to leave readers feeling satisfied. Rather than be left with further questions, a reader would be more likely to have a thirst to dig deeper.

Furthermore, the book boasts lots of illustration, from photography to diagrams to paintings and contemporary etchings and cartoons.

If you take the tour or visit the battlefield, be sure to purchase this guide.

A very good and quite detailed explanation of the events which lead to the battle of Culloden which changed the shape of Scotland and the UK as a whole. Also with a good description of the battle itself and its aftermath. Also lots of great contemporary portraits, engravings, documents, propaganda cartoons, photographs of archaeological evidence etc which really bring to life this period of history and demonstrate how these are not just historical figures fighting and dying but real human beings. Something often forgotten when we learn about history.

Culloden is such an important battle for what it brought about, and to a great extent the implications of Jacobitism and the brutal treatment of the highlanders after the battle are still being felt to this day with resentment at what many in Scotland see as English overlordship of Scotland. I'm happy to now be slightly more enlightened about it and look forward to many future trips to the battlefield site with my new job as a tour guide in Scotland!

A thoroughly illustrated and clearly written guide that sets the battle in its wider context. Much of the text reflects the displays in the museum at the visitor centre run by the National Trust for Scotland at Culloden.
A useful addition to a visit and an excellent memento. Highly recommended.
