When Lady Arianna Sweet arrives unannounced at Lord Morgandale's country estate he mistakes her for a courtisan he hired for the weekend. Arianna soon disabuses Morgandale of that notion and informs him she is in need of his grandmother, Lady Elder. Morgandale informs her that his grandmother has since passed away, but invites her to stay at his estate for awhile to recover from her trip, In fact demands it and sends away her carriage and driver so she can't leave.

Arianna Sweet has recently returned to England after spending most of her life in India with her father. Her father has been murdered and a potentially life altering formula he was working on stolen. Arianna knows who murdered her father and stole the secret...now she races to find the villain and retrieve the secret.

The attraction between Morgandale and Arianna is instantaneous. But Morgandale doesn't want to be attracted to Arianna and does his best to fight it. However, Arianna is innocent to the ways of love but wants to see where this attraction between them will led. And being ignorant of the social decorum in England, she does some shocking things that leave Morgandale dazed and confused. She leaves for London after resting at his estate and Morgandale soon follows as he is now in love with her but will not admit it; even to himself.

I really wish I could say I liked An Earl to Enchant. It has all the qualities of a good historical romance, but I feel that Ms. Grey followed a template when writing this book. Having read neither of her other two, I'm not sure if this is her style of writing or it's just this book.

I really didn't feel a connection between the hero and heroine. There was an awkwardness to their story like two pieces of a puzzle that don't quite fit. The book is 352 pages long and 275 of those pages dealt with them on his country estate. A long and frankly boring tributary to their blossoming love. The time span was one week but it felt like one year.

Once they do consummate their love it was quick and fast. About one page. Even Morgandale apologizes for being so quick off the mark. I had to keep flipping back through the book because scenes would suddenly appear, written as though I should know what was going on. Insignificant tidbits and conversations would pop up randomly leaving me feeling confused. And eventually irritated.

Ms Grey has a habit of building up a scene, giving the impression of being important. Then disappoints by resolving in a single sentence or two. The two most interesting aspects of the book are Morgandale's letters from his grandmother who quotes a man who had a saying for everything and Morgandale's father Gibby. Unfortunately you don't get to see much of them.

The "intriguing" plot was elaborated on and resolved in about two to three pages. The scenes that made up the suspense portion of the plot didn't make sense. For example, the villain sees Arianna's maid in London but leaves London to go to Morgandale's estate to find out where Arianna is. Huh?

Once Morgandale finds out the big secret he tells her he will fix it all. But she figures it out RIGHT after he leaves, goes to the villain’s home, solves the crime, and all is well. Morgandale doesn't even get to be the hero. But Ms Grey allows him to figure out the formula's secret so he doesn't look like a completely inept.

I had a difficult time with this book. One moment I was enjoying the heck out of it and the next I was wrinkling my brow, wondering what in the world happened when it seemed to fall apart. Then it would pick right back up and sail along quite smoothly for a bit, only to sink back down to previous depths. I’m going to say it. It was an up and down read.

The conclusions I have come to in my dilemma with this story is, first of all, the dialogue is what threw me most of the time. Sometimes there’s wittiness enough to get through a scene, but then the next scene has Morgan and Arianna sounding like 12-year-olds. I never did figure out if it’s the wording used, the cadence of those words, or just what caused the problem. All I know is I didn’t care for most of the dialogue throughout.

The book actually starts out quite nicely. Morgan has retired to the country to escape his newly married cousins and their respective bliss. He’s just had enough and wants a little debauchery to counteract all that marriage stuff. So he hires a courtesan for the week, anticipating a lot of satisfaction. What he gets instead is Arianna Sweet sweeping into his life during the same storm his lady of the night is expected. Yep, he mistakes her for a wanton woman. This scene is also the first instance of the dialogue I talked about before.

Arianna has come straight from India where her father was murdered and she’s determined to finish his work so he’ll receive due recognition posthumously. She is a savvy young woman due to her international experience, but there are spots where that savviness inexplicably disappears for a while.

One of those aforementioned down moments is Morgan began to irritate me with his never marrying attitude. It’s all well and good for him to not want to marry, but even after he begins to think there’s more to his relationship with Arianna, he still refuses to give in. This just went on much too long, more than three-quarters of the book. I want something different to go on after a while when I read, and it just didn’t happen here.

At least Arriana’s single-minded focus on her father’s work doesn’t last nearly as long as Morgan’s non-marriage hang-up; she’s admitted she’s fallen for the man before she leaves his home when he doesn’t commit in any way to her.

An up side is that I do like the love scenes (minus the dialogue) between these characters. There’s sexual tension aplenty starting first on Morgan’s part and then Arianna’s as she becomes more and more aware of him as a man in conjunction with her sensuality.

I have not read the second book in this series. I’m on the fence about it. I did enjoy the first book a little more than this third one, so I’m not sure I want to pick up the middle part of the series right now or not. Maybe some day.

This was to be the last book in a trilogy. But the writer introduced 3 more tangential characters to continue the series. So technically it's 6 books but they're divided into 2 sets of trilogies.
This 3rd book was a good ending to the 1st trilogy set.
Arianna was the most enchanting of the female characters in the series.
I've realized that it's the writers style for the story to progress slowly & drag in the middle which is a bummer.
Of course, now I'm invested so I'll have to read the next 3 books.
And I definitely would recommend doing this series in order as each book's story flows into the next one though if you do it out of order, you wouldn't be lost.

An Earl to Enchant by Amelia Grey
Genre: Historical Fiction, Romance

Rating: 1

After the first two chapters of this book, I was ready to give up. I gave it a little bit more just to see if it was worth it, and I sort of regret it. I could have been reading something else.

I felt like I knew everything after the first chapter, and that there was no reason to keep going. The character spilled her guts, the sexual tension was immediate and way too strong for a first meeting, and it felt typical. I knew what would happen: They’d meet, they’d sleep together, they’d get married, they’d fall in love. In that order. There was no mystery, there was nothing keeping me reading.

The characters seemed dense and melodramatic. For instance, Arianna fainted in the first chapter, and woke being “carried in strong arms” (the Earl). She “felt safe there for some reason.” But I was thinking the whole time, She doesn’t even know the guy. It felt wrong that she was so attracted to him and “felt safe” and “felt at home” when she—and I as a reader—didn’t even know the character very well. Also, after one argument she’s convinced herself that he’s ill tempered—when he’s not—and that keeps her from being open to him.

The writing wasn’t that great, either. The prose felt forced and hard to read, and the dialogue was awkward. It was as if the characters said more than they needed to, and said everything they thought, and described things unnecessarily. For example,

It’s just that I’m so happy to be outside for the first time in such a long time. I seldom left my room on the ship, and this is the first time I’ve been out of your house. Everything looks fresh and new.”

(Page 108, ARC)

I would have said “It’s just that I’m so happy to be outside for the first time in such a long time.” She had seldom left her room on the ship, and it was her first time outside of his house. Everything looked fresh and new. It’s less awkward... or maybe just less wordy.

There was just too much against this book to keep me reading. I will say that from what I read, Grey is good at developing the sexual tension. But that was another thing that was just too much for me.

All in all, I was expecting a lot more from the plot and characters than I got from An Earl to Enchant.

An Earl to Enchant was published April 6th. It got 4- and 5-star reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. Please consider other reviews before making purchase decisions.

Matters are not proceeding to plan when the Morgan, the Earl of Morgandale, awaits a courtesan and a beautiful lady arrives. Miss Ariana Sweet's hope for sanctuary goes awry when a dashing and dangerous nobleman greets her instead of the expected elderly lady.

And so begins Amelia Grey's delightful Regency historical, AN EARL TO ENCHANT, a tale brimming with deceptive appearances, mistaken expectations, and dangerous secrets, all leavened with flashes of humor.

On the proverbial dark and stormy night, Ariana, ill, and newly arrived from India, seeks aid from an old family friend, Morgan's now-deceased grandmother. When Ariana collapses in his arms, Morgan is forced to grant her shelter.

The attraction between them is sharp and immediate. But the rakish Morgan is too much the gentleman to take advantage of a sick lady, and Ariana will not burden her kind benefactor with the danger stalking her.

The sensuality ratchets up page by page as they continue to deny their mounting passion. Meanwhile, exactly who is the villain dogging Ariana? The man who followed her from India, or someone else? Ms. Grey keeps us guessing almost to the end.

AN EARL TO ENCHANT is a treat for everyone who likes mystery, danger and humor woven into a sensual romance. Enjoy.

This was a good book! It was full of mystery and intrigue. What I loved most about this book was that each person had different secrets to their character. This made reading the book that much more enjoyable.

The fact that Amelia Grey added a character who was British through and through but she made the female character have a different background than the rest of the other books that are written in London society in the 1800s. This book was so encompassing that each time you turned the page, the story just got that much better. I won't ruin the review with any spoilers. I will however say this, the fact that the male and female character had this huge attraction to each other and they both denied what they were thinking, was great to read as they both had the same thought process. I would so recommend this book if you are looking for a good laugh and a great mystery at the same time.

I loved India when I visited, so to read about a heroine who had lived there for ten years was a treat. Even in a different century much of what she remembered was easily brought to my mind. That speaks to how well Ms. Grey wrote the book! I didn't have the experience of a long, arduous sea voyage, but I certainly empathized with her ordeal. She arrived on the Earl's doorstep half-dead, looking for someone who had died a year earlier. Quite a difficult set of circumstances for the lord of the manor!

I really enjoyed the heroine who was raised differently than young ladies in England. She was refreshingly realistic, strong, and yet flexible.

I had read the first story a couple years ago and hadn't read the second one (yet, but I will now!) These can be read out of order. Each is a complete and unique story in itself.

I wanted to give this a 4 star rating but it wasn't quite there for me. I don't know if it's because this is the last book in the Rogue Dynasty series and I haven't read the other two yet but something was missing.

The issue with Gibby was very confusing. I felt it was thrown in there to set up for the next series/book. It wasn't done well because while it DID make me curious it sort of ruin Morgan's reason for going to London. Morgan's reason for going was to look after Gibby (we all KNOW it's Arianna) but besides having two conversations with him, Morgan really doesn't do anything. At this point in the book, Morgan either has no clue he's in love with Arianna or knows it and is deluding himself that he isn't. Either way, more of him trying to help Gibby would have given me more insight into him and his conflicting feelings.

An enchanting love story as the reserved Earl of Morgandale meets a young lady who will change his views on matrimony. Arianna Sweet arrived at Morgan’s country estate looking for his grandmother who is deceased. She had been living in India and had no idea Lady Elder had died. Attraction soon blooms between them but Arianna has not told him that her father was murdered in India and his killer has been seen in London. Morgan is a confirmed bachelor and tells himself he can forget about Arianna but he knows he is only fooling himself. She is headstrong and impetuous and he can’t get her out of his mind.

I love historical romance novels and Amelia Grey is one of my most favorite authors. Her books are wonderfully descriptive and the characters are always wonderfully developed. I love this series and highly recommend all of her books. I was lucky enough to meet her in person at a book signing and have one of her very first books, signed by Amelia! She is a wonderful person. Please read her books - you will love them all. I promise.

A great read!

I enjoyed reading about Morgan and Arianna. How she showed up on his doorstep looking for his grandmother who had passed a year ago, she had seen her father's partner standing over his dead body. She felt safe in Morgan's arms and at his home. I'm glad they got their HEA. I highly recommend this book! 👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤

Good read

Book 3 of this series has a bit more danger and mystery than the first two, but still has humor, romance, angst, and some hot sex. The author really knows how to hold the reader's attention. Highly recommend.

I liked the heroine's background and how the culture of India was part of the plot. I also enjoyed the discussions of herbs as medicine even though it was very superficial.

Grey crafts an intriguing Victorian romance with "An Earl to Enchant." This is book three in her Rogues' Dynasty series. Lucas Morgandale, (Morgan) knows his mind when it comes to women, but when he meets Miss Arianna Sweet, she throws his whole equilibrium into chaos.

The novel opens with Morgan waiting for a female companion. It's late at night, rainy, and he's had a good amount to drink. Around midnight there's a knock on the door, but it isn't who he was expecting. Arianna Sweet has just arrived from India and has gone to Valleydale in search of Morgan's grandmother, Lady Elder. Arianna is sick, and Morgan insists she stay for the night.

Morgan later explains to Arianna his grandmother has passed away, but he's willing to help her. He insists she stay at Valleydale until she is fully recovered. Arianna softens towards her host.

Soon Arianna and Morgan grow close. Arianna calms Morgan's horse, Master Brute. Morgan shows Arianna the cliffs on the Valleydale estate. The couple share hungry kisses and scorching caresses. Morgan, however, soon realizes that Arianna is a virgin, and he knows himself well enough to know he doesn't want to take that from her. It puts a damper on their growing relationship. Fully recovered, Arianna goes to London and settles into society. She intends to present her father's formula to the Royal Apothecary Scientific Academy, but the man who killed her father is now in London. Morgan follows Arianna to the city, but will his reemergence in her life affirm his feelings for her, or drive her into her stalker's trap?

Grey writes a sharp story that flows well. She paints a vivid picture of Morgan and Arianna's world using a good economy of words. Valleydale and the cliffs are rich in description.

Grey brings authenticity to the story through the characters dialogue. She's done her research and it shows, especially when describing the influence of Indian culture on Arianna.

Morgan and Arianna are interesting characters. Morgan knows himself well, but when he meets Arianna, she beguiles him to the point of madness. He wants her, but realizes the price for having her might lead him to the altar. The question he has to answer is - Is he willing to pay the price? Arianna is a spitfire. She embodies an innocence of English society having spent so much time in India, but she also has a worldliness about her gained through her travels. She knows what she wants - Morgan. But can she have him?

The story is sophisticated for romance readers. The scenes are rich and rewarding. Overall, "An Earl to Enchant" is a nice escape to another time and place.

This is the third book about 3 cousins finding love. Like with the two other books here each chapter starts with a quote from Lord Chesterfield, and I do like that. She has kept consistent, the letters from lady Elder, the quotes by or jokingly by Lord Chesterfield, and Gibby getting into trouble.

Wouldn't exactly call Arianna young, she is 27, but she has lived in India her entire life, and has not been presented. She is very young in one way. After her father's death she leaves for England and shows up at at Morgan's estate. She is looking for his grandmother and she is weak from fever. Soon he realizes that he is attracted to her, but he has better things to do than seducing innocent women. Better to send for someone who can introduce the lovely Arianna to society.

This book has another pace then the other two. There there were more "action" in one way. This one introduced the couple and the time they spent at Valleydale getting to know each other, and falling in love, whether they want it or not. That is the two first parts of the book, getting to know each other, starting with the sexual tension and then the last part that is set in London. Here the danger starts, it all has to do with her father's work in India and the reason why she has come to London.

Arianna is sweet, she may be a blushing virgin but she does not deny what she is feeling for him. And Morgan, well I do like he eagerness to preserve her innocence. He seems honorable (but well we all know he is not gonna be able to keep that up for long.)

This is sweet romance, I do not mind things going slowly or it not being steamy (I did have that earlier talk about how conservative I get sometimes, lol.) There is some passion in the latter part of the book, fear not those who want that. But I think the sweetness is the thing about this book just as that is her name.

When thinking about all 3 books, then I think number 2 was my favorite of the three, and these two can share the second place. They do not need to be read in order. Even if I hadn't known anything I could have read this one without the rest. But then I love order and could never read a book out of order.

An Earl To Enchant by Amelia Grey
Historical Romance – April 6, 2010
4 Stars

An Earl To Enchant is the third novel in Amelia Grey’s Rogues’ Dynasty Series which follows the first two novels in this series A Duke To Die For and A Marquis To Marry. The Rogue Dynasty Series feature the stories of the grandsons of the notorious Lady Elder.

An Earl To Enchant tells the story of Lord Lucas Morgandale who has gone to his estate in the county to get away from his matchmaking cousins who both fell in love and married in the London season and feel he should do the same but he has no intention of falling into the same trap. Unfortunately fate has other plans in the guise of Miss Arianna Sweet who shows up on his doorstep looking for his late Grandmother Lady Elder. When Arianna faints with fatigue and illness at Lord Morgandale’s feet after her long voyage from India, he feels compelled to allow her to stay to recuperate. It doesn't help that he is instantly drawn to her, which is the last thing he wants. Arianna is happy for a safe place to stay but she knows she can’t trust Lord Morgandale with the secret of what really happened to her father in India and the groundbreaking discovery that he made which someone would kill for.

Amelia Grey does a fantastic job of creating characters that are compelling. I especially loved the characters of Lucas and Arianna. They both have some very different aspects to their personalities but are greatly draw to each other despite the fact that they have reasons that make them want to draw back from their obvious attraction. In addition to the main characters, I also loved how the novel included many additional characters that were interesting and made me to want to learn more about them and their stories.

The story of An Earl To Enchant is an excellent story with a believable and compelling romance. In addition to the main romance storyline, there is a mix of mystery and adventure to keep the reader enthralled until the very end. If you love a great historical romance that is both exciting and enjoyable, I would recommend An Earl To Enchant. I would suggest starting by reading the first two novels by Amelia Grey in this exciting new series.

A fan of author Amelia Grey's Rogue's Dynasty series, I was very much looking forward to reading An Earl to Enchant and it proved to be a delightful read.

I found it amazing how much of this story is told with just the hero and heroine and within just a few rooms/settings. It is so focused on the couple and their being alone together, but it never fails to keep the reader engaged and entertained. It takes a very good writer to have so much of the story with just those two characters and very few appearances of others. I was highly impressed with the skill this took and the reader will not miss those extra characters or settings at all. I loved how straight forward this love story was without all the extra noise.

The storyline of the heroine Arianna having spent much of her life in India made this story come alive with something other than just your usual young lady. Arianna's missteps for what is acceptable in English society are expertly layered throughout the story, but they are not overly done or exaggerated as many authors might do. These escapades added just the right hint of exotic fun and all three Rogue brother's viewing Arianna belly dancing through a window was a scene you will chuckle out loud over.

The part of the story that wasn't as compelling to me was that of finding Arianna's father's murderer. Yes, I know this was the driving motivation behind Arianna's character, but I really skipped right over these sections. I didn't care who had killed her father, or that they were caught, I just wanted more of Morgan fighting to not fall in love, and then fighting not to marry Arianna even though he loved her.

It was refreshing to have a virgin heroine who was perfectly okay with never marrying and not because she was afraid of men. Instead, Arianna was just happy with life and didn't feel the need for a man to make her existence better. She loved Morgan, but would not have wanted him to marry her if he hadn't loved her. She was a very unassuming heroine and I enjoyed that.

If you haven't read any of the Rogue's Dynasty Series you should really check them out. They are very well-written and lovely books that always satisfy me.

Lord Morgandale decided to escape the hustle & bustle of London and spend his time in the country. He'd grown weary of the parties and balls and of his cousins who insisted on parading eligible young ladies for him to 'choose' from. However, it seems country life has bored him as well and he finds himself in need of something, or someone, to occupy his time. Enter Arianna Sweet...

Arianna has lived in India most of her life while her father performed his scientific research. Now her father has been brutally murdered and she must return to England to seek the help of Lady Elder, an old friend of her fathers. Before her father was killed, he thought he had discovered the cure for consumption and now Arianna's mission is to make sure her father and his memory get the credit he deserves.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters of Morgan (aka Lord Morgandale) and Arianna. Morgan is an Earl and he lives up to this title. Although unmarried and in no hurry to marry, he's responsible, kind and an all-around good guy. Arianna is innocent and sweet yet impetuous and determined. She intended to return to England to seek the help Morgan's grandmother (Lady Elder) and instead got the help she needed and more from Morgan himself. Arianna was as prim and proper as any well-bred English miss, but having spent so much time in India, she picked up an Indian habit or two that intrigued Morgan (and made him a little hot under the cravat).

I was pleased with the novels pacing. Morgan and Arianna enjoyed each other's company and seemed to grow a genuine fondness for each other, although they didn't fall in love or at least didn't realize it right away. There were a few moments that were a bit of a stretch [damsel in distress and hero shows up out of nowhere:], but I guess that's to be expected with romances. There were also some very sweet moments that were nice to read.

This was the 3rd book in the Rogues Dynasty Series. However, I was able to enjoy it without having read its predecessors. I plan to read the other two books next chance I get.
