"[Exposes] the role Eurocentric history-writing plays in rationalizing European oppression of Afrikan peoples and in the falsification of Afrikan consciousness ... [and contends] that the alleged mental and behavioral maladaptiveness of oppressed Afrikan peoples is a political-economic necessity for the maintenance of White domination and imperialism."--Back cover.
This book contributed to my understanding of SELF by studying two aspects of my psychology: (1) my levels of consciousness and (2) the connection between my psychological development and my progress as a woman foremost and a Black one especially. It forced me to start with self FIRST before I could expand my consciousness to other levels. I discovered that when I re-structured my psychology I changed my political, social, and economic circumstances. It was this that was the foundation to my knowing that we have PERSONAL POWER that must be tapped into before we can do any work on behalf of the collective. I recommend this read for anyone who is looking for tools to help them on their life journey. It was the first book that truly opened my eyes to my own ways of thinking and behaving with profound understanding. It also helped me develop tools to change aspects that were negative in my life.
The late great Pan Africanist thinker Dr Amos Wilson gives amazing information in this book about the Eurocentric stronghold on the thinking and culture of African(Black) people and the ways for a truly Afrocentric cultural domain to eventually become a reality. Great read and it is not overly long also.
Really good read and interesting information all should read especially Blacks and white. could've used a better ending, but very informative and thought provoking
A book I would place alongside Black Athena, the 4 volume UN series of African history (I dislike talking of 'Africa', as if it was some homogeneous unit and not a multiplicity).
Africa is itself a white construct, even the national borders it is forced to hold are Euopean; many of its definitions of 'self' are derived from European Christian (and Jewish) stereotypes, with no reference to local tradition, cutlure, religion.
The path to identity will be long and constantly attacked by white supremacism and capitalism, a new and indigenous culture must be defined
