I have mixed feelings on this.

Trigger warnings for miscarriage, spousal and parental abuse, drug abuse, self harm and sexual assault.

The main reason why I wanted to read this is that it is a mafia romance by a Black author with Black characters. That was the appeal and that’s all I needed.

The beginning was slow. The characters and plot were being built and it wasn’t till the 30% mark that the love interests actually got to meet.

When they met, their chemistry wasn’t as explosive as I thought it would've been since their connection was instant, but I wasn’t convinced.

I like how well we got to know the characters on an individual level. They’ve both gone through a lot and all of that is explored quite well.

However, as the story progressed, I just didn’t latch on to the story. Don’t get me wrong, there were moments that had me tearing up for both Scarlett and Assad, together and apart, but there were an equal amount of moments that made me feel distant and disconnected from the story.

Hence the mixed feelings.

**SPOILERS**

I'm a huge fan of B. Love but, I did not like In His Possession. The storyline was all over the place with no real substance to the plot. Scarlet has the misfortune to have twin brothers become obsessed with her. She's essentially held captive by both brothers over the span of five years. Scarlet endures an abusive marriage with Robert for three years then, when she finally escapes him, she's forced to work as a prostitute with Malcolm for two years. Well, she was probably more of a high class call girl since she was Malcolm's main chic and she lived in the big house with him. During this time, Scarlet is abused, raped, and has multiple miscarriages. Her situation was truly heartbreaking and it just didn't seem like there was a way out for Scarlet until she meets Assad. Assad is the head of the Black Mafia and becomes completely smitten with Scarlet from the moment he meets her. So smitten that he wins her in a poker game. Now, here's where the storyline gets wonky for me. Malcolm is supposedly so obsessed with Scarlet but, he's willing to bet her in a poker game?!!! I also thought it was unrealistic that Assad would risk so much for a woman he literally just met. He was willing to risk war for Scarlet and they hadn't even had sex yet. I had a hard time getting into this storyline because, it just wasn't believable. It started out slow and didn't get any better. It's sad because, I was really excited to get into In His Possession. I probably won't read book two and I'm definitely not buying book three.

TW for abuse, self-harm, and rape

When I first started this book, I was really loving the story. Scarlett is owned by Malcom, a man she hates but can't escape. There is no way out and she cannot do anything when he wants to control her and her body. When Assad first lays eyes on her, he knows he has to have her and free her. He knows, though, that he's going to have to plan and take his time to truly free Scarlett. Scarlett is intrigued by Assad, but she knows she can't keep her hopes up because she's been trapped for so long.

The first half of this book was SO GOOD and Assad was trying to get Scarlett out of Malcom's control, but once she was free I lost interest in the plot of this book. Scarlett was figuring things out with family and her future and I lost that engaging, dangerous plot from the first half of the book. I wasn't interested in our characters, what they were going through, or where the plot was going. While the first half was super good and interesting, the second half lost its engagement.

“I’m going to take you and then I’m going to set you free” well come on and rescue me King!!

In His Possession was surprisingly really good and don’t look at me like that because yall KNOW B. Love is inconsistent 😳🤷🏽‍♀️ but anywho stay focused!

For this to have been a Black Mafia book from almost 3 years ago, the first book delivered on everything I expect from a Mafia family. Book one gave us a glimpse into Assad Black the eldest Black sibling that prides himself on being the alpha and protector of the bunch. For Scarlett he couldn’t have entered her life at a better time! After meeting the twins from hell, she jumped from the frying pan to hot oil or whatever they say 😂 essentially she was fkd seven ways past Sunday dealing with Malcolm and Robert!

After witnessing her need for saving, Assad makes Malcolm an offer he couldn’t refuse! Baby it was a war started behind this woman and I guess she was worth it to Assad because he was coming guns blazing behind her!

There were trigger warnings at the start of this audio that may or may not have been mentioned in the actual book but be warned that this book has abuse and rape so if that’s not something you care to read about then skip those recommended chapters because it was a bit brutal 🫠! The momentum for this series started out strong with this book so I hope the same is the case for the rest of them.

Thank you to my two book besties that gave me the push to give this series a chance despite the HEAVILY mixed reviews!

STORY:
I enjoyed this story and watching the connection between Assad and Scarlett. It is a cruel journey for Scarlett with some dark subject matters. The author in the beginning of the book notes the contents and lets us know where they are located in the book for those who cringe after certain contents. Scarlett was a likable character and to go through all that abuse, she couldn’t process someone actually wanting her without anything in return. It was great seeing her character evolve. Assad, lawd, where do I start? I love the way he saw what he wanted and went after it. He put everything on the line to rescue and freed Scarlett from her current situation. The way that man treated her and build her up was a turn on. I pleasantly enjoyed their journey.

I had two minor buts, and it’s a me thing not really an author thing. I know the author was establishing to us both Assad’s and Scar’s life individually, but it took to long. They both weren’t actually in a scene until 28-30% of the book. I can’t say I was bored but was becoming impatient because I felt I knew enough. The other thing was the epilogue. I personally don’t feel satisfied with the epilogue because the content that was in the epilogue needed it’s own chapter. It felt cut off and because of that I didn’t fully enjoy it the way I feel I’m suppose to. I am sure we will get a peek into their life after in the next book, which is Hassan’s story, but still.

SEXUAL CHEMISTRY:
Sexual chemistry between Assad and Scarlett was satisfactory for me. I love their build up leading to the their sex scenes as the author connects them mentally and physically. I also appreciate the way Assad was considerate with wanting to show Scar different and that it wasn’t just all about the physically.

SECONDARY CHARACTERS:
Ok, Assad and his crazy family. He has a big family and I enjoyed them immensely. To name a few:

Hassan - Assad’s brother. He is always ready to throw down and I love him and his connected to Vanna.

Vanna - Scar’s best friend love her. Excited to see her story plays out with Hassan.

Savant - Assad’s brother means well but a hot head. Looking forward to his story.

OVERALL
A book I felt invested in and looking forward to the series. Hopefully I can go the distant and not only be involve 2 to 3 books only. Again, enjoyed Assad’s and Scar’s with 2 minor buts.

✰✰TRIGGERS: addiction and abuse, drug use, mental illness, rape, abuse, some violence etc..

****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.

I almost didn’t Make It

This was a doozy, for real. I almost didn’t make it because it starts off heavy af. I was ready to go and get Scarett myself because my boo was suffering. Assad is so sweet, patient, and protective of Scarlett. I love that he paid attention to everything about her, everything she went through, and made a conscious effort to respect her boundaries and not trigger her. I love how encouraging he was to her, giving her the space to stand on her own feet but still being in her corner to support her. My main complaints are that Scarlett suffered so much and I don’t feel she was avenged enough for me. & The solution was not good enough, why would we send her back to hell even for the briefest have time? I also feel like Scar need more aftercare for the trauma she endured- it just felt like she was facing trigger after trigger and this was suppose to be her happy part.

Make no mistake this read starts off heavy but it get better if you keep reading. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

3.5 stars overall. All Scarlett wanted to do was be free. She went from being married to a monster into the hands of the devil. A chance encounter with Assad starts her in a journey to freedom. Assad, leader of the Black Mafia, only wants to see Scarlett free. Although he found her attractive, his goal was not to make her a prisoner.

The trauma Scarlett dealt with was horrible. Getting to know how the back story with mom was not really detailed until midway through. The ending did seem a little rushed but I will continue the series. The other books focus on other characters in the family.

I was so excited for this Mafia Romance and I absolutely loved it!! The beginning was really rough and there are some TWs for sexual assault, rape and abuse.

The romance between Assad and Scarlett is just AMAZING. I love them and I love Assad and everything he does for her.

Man this was a beautifully brutal read. Everything that Scarlett went through was truly heartbreaking. I don’t know if it was intentional but I found it profound that the things that made Scar a magnet to people and also a target for abuse where the “wife qualities” that are so highly praised. I mean even Assad does. While I really enjoyed this book and the writing style, there wasn’t enough to make me crave the next book. I appreciate the reasoning the author gave at the end and that this is a standalone but knowing a little more about it the crew or seeing them interact more would have been nice. Please don’t ignore the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. The abuse Scar suffered was extreme.

I don’t know. The book was just okay. I listened to the audio on hoopla. So i can only imagine some of y’all reviews if you read the book.

There are a lot of triggers in here and the men Scarlett had to deal with after losing her own father were devils. The mother was fighting her own demons and that was straight sad. Happy that a real one came along to be genuine with her and not to take from her like the others. I guess i wanted more mafia business than what we got. Not sure if I’ll move forward with the rest of the series.

This was a hard read for me because it brought up a lot of personal trauma. It was hard rating this story based on the events that took place. Scarlett was a lost woman who endured so much pain and I felt for her. Assad is the leader of the Black Mayhem group and he saved Scarlett from being held prisoner. The story kind of got slow toward the end and some things were all over the place. I am happy that Scarlett got her happy ending, but I wished I got to see the two as a couple in the end. I loved the characters and I think that made up for a lot.

This definitely was a challenging read at times because of some of the things that Scarlet endured. She went from one hell to another until she was rescued by Assad. One of my complaints with books featuring a captive is always how they go from captivity straight into a committed relationship with their savior. That didn’t necessarily happen here and I appreciated the author’s choice in doing that. While they did fall in love, I like that he loved her enough to let her go to experience life & freedom with the hope that they’d one day be reunited. I do wish though that the story didn’t drag on as long in some parts so that we could have actually seen them as a healed couple together (like I didn’t care about the conflict with him and his BM in another state. Too much book real estate was taken up on that). I also feel like the people who did Scarlett wrong got off very easily & I wanted more revenge for my girl especially since he’s mafia. He coulda tore the city up over her.

There’s a lot of books in this series, so I’ll definitely revisit eventually to see what else the Black Mayhem crew is up to.

alright

This book was just okay. I was bored. It just felt like I was reading words and wasn’t really feeling what was going on. The plot twist was good though. Assad really introduced Scarlett to the soft life. There were also a lot of things happening off page and the author would just state what happened instead of us just reading about it. I’m glad she saved herself at the end. Her having a baby with him but not meeting his daughter is crazy.

The author switched between four and five families. That part kept confusing me.

CW for rape, domestic abuse, sexual assault, drug usage, severe ocd, neglectful parents, forced miscarriage, forced abortion. There’s always some things with B. Love’s work that makes me a little unsure/uncomfortable. All of the main characters always have relations with other people. This book especially there was an emphasis on the women only talking to the men in a respectful tone of voice. And there’s a few more things. But also, she does write her books well.

I enjoyed this book, I did. Especially the beginning. It was gritty, intense and fast paced but then towards the end it got a bit slow for me. It was almost like the book was going in a few directions and had seemed to lose some of its edge.

But still I completely loved these characters and feel like this is a world I want to read more about.

This is my first I’ve listened to by this author. It was OKAY. I couldn’t grasp the storyline. It was a lot being told but wasn’t connecting in my opinion. I did appreciate the trigger warnings at the preface of the book. I’ve never heard of that before. I’ll give him another try because I see the potential.

I’m a big fan of the narrator, Honey Jones, and she did an awesome job as usual.

This was a really wholesome book. It started off ruff asf but Scar bulldozed through it all. The twins Malcom and Robert was a mf mess to think they can own someone like that. But babyyyy when Mr.Black came it was OVER for anyone who thought anything. This book had a lot of action and a beautiful ending.

I liked the read

Although it just doesn't feel complete to me it was still good. It seems as just when it got to the good stuff it was over. Like I needed more of them actually together to see their bond grow and their family. It just fell a tad bit short for me.

Finally Free to Love

The book started a little slow for me. I understood the intention was to get to know and understand the lives of Scarlett and Assad, but it took awhile to get to the plot of the story. She seemed like such a beautiful person that could not catch a break. Her mother was beyond terrible a
Scarlett made the terrible decision of marrying Robert, an older man that seemed to love and cherish her like her father did. Robert however wanted to control her at first to one up his brother, but he eventually fell in love with her. Both brothers thought love was shown through treating her like an object you possess as well as through abuse. Her mother was beyond terrible and started the spiral of abuse and her search for fatherly love and protection. Scarlett eventually meets Assad and for the first time her body reacts in ways it never has to a man. She has hope that a man could possibly show love to her without abuse.
Assad is the leader of the Black Mayhem Mafia, inherited from his father. We learn that like Scarlett he too has an estranged relationship with his mother. Both suffering from abuse due to their mother's addictions. Despite that Assad loves his mother deeply and does his best to help her. For the women he loves he makes it known. Jessica, the mother of his only child gave up on their relationship after he cheated on her. He hoped they would be able to work it out, because he loved his little family. He took great care of them. Although Jessica was still in love with him she couldn't get past his infidelity and decided to move on. So Assad was forced to let her go. Scarlett made that possible. He knew she was his as soon as he met her.
Assad puts a lot on the line to gain Scarlett her freedom. Together they improved their bad habits. The love they had for each other was clear. Assad was honorable because he encouraged her to be free even though he wanted to be with her. He wanted her to have the freedom to choose what to do with her life. It was beautiful.

Beast Is Her Name

B. Love, you always come with it. You didn't half step with this book, either. Assad is the truth! I'm over here wanting to climb that tree and swing from those branches. Scarlett was the softer side of him. She was his calm, his peace. I don't think you could've matched them more perfect than you did. In the beginning, I cried all through this book, but the journey was worth it. Healing comes in so many different forms. I absolutely love how you executed it. Love healed Scarlett. It covered her, comforted her, and freed her. Chile, I can't wait to read about Hassan's crazy,
hotheaded self. Love is a powerful drug.

First, Major props to the author for the detailed trigger warning at the beginning of the book.

I feel like the beginning of the book was heavy but I think those parts were crucial for the foundation of the book. Scarlett had been dealing with abuse and neglect for years, it broke my heart that she went through so much. She dealt with her pain the best way she knew how. 😭Until she met Assad and he saved her. 😩🙏🏾 Assad was everything!! I loved everything about him. He was such a gentle soul for Scarlett. A selfish lover but what solidified him as bae was his willingness to encourage Scar to find herself. I halfway expected Scarlett to put up a fight with Assad but her growth really progressed throughout the book. I appreciate that.

The characters were really interesting and I am looking forward to reading about them and what’s to come from this family. I liked the plot twist involving the brothers; I wasn’t expecting for both to be so evil. The book really kept me interested in the couples, “situation.” And also there was a ton of things happening in the background that made me eager to see how it would all come together in the end.

3.5 ⭐️’s
3 🌶️’s

Wow there was so much like about this book, but equally so much I just think could have been done better. This might be a long review for ha reason. Despite this it’s still a story worth of reading.

This book is about a kind, loyal, and deeply broken woman named Scarlett, who after fleeing an abusive husband, finds herself trapped in an equally abusive relationship with criminal named Malcom. Malcom is not in love with her, but rather obsessed with possessing her. Scar describe it as being held as his “sex slave”. Feeling hopeless and desperate, Scar has accepted her fate, believes she will never escape and images the only way out of this situation is through death. Until one day a handsome black mafia prince walk into her life, wins her in a poker tournament, and agreed to try and set her free.

There was so much I enjoyed about this book. I really approached that the author included so much about therapy, growth, and healing from trauma. I was overjoyed that the MMC Assad was also the one to initiate, and even insist, that Scar focused on her healing after escaping trauma. Assad was an absolutely swoon worth book-boyfriend. There where so may moment in the book where I had to pause to appreciate what a respectfully, responsible, thoughtful, and intelligent man he was. He really is everything a man should be, but it was especially fantastic to have a black MMC who was just so perfect.

I actually initially picked up this book because I was so excited to finally read a dark romance book with black main characters. Inclusion matters, and there isn’t enough positive black representation in this genre.

I also liked that they spoke with an authentic urban language, because again there isn’t enough authentic love, culture, or language in the dark romance genre. However I listened to the audiobook, and there were times when the narrators missed the mark on the delivery on some of the phrases. At times it felt cliche, and almost like a caricature. Don’t get me wrong I most definitely would have taken this out of the book! At times it made the character more authentic, but sometimes it felt forced, or just didn’t read right in the third person.

Which brings some to my biggest problem with the whole book, it is entirely written in the third person. Again I listened to the audiobook, so I couldn’t see the punctuation, and there where times I was confused on who was talking or being talked about because of all the pronouns needed to write this in third person. Plus, I feel like first person perspective in this genre just reads better. When written in first person this type of book feels make realistic, and it makes the reader feel like you can relate to the characters. Which was important because this covered some real intense, deep, and real life situations. I’ve actually personally lived through similar situation. As such, I feel like would have felt more connected to what they were going through if it was written in the first person.

For the same reason, it was sometimes hard to follow the plot in this book. There was a lot happening in this book. Things that were important for the reader to understand about the personalities of the characters, their backstories, and why they were the way they were. I feel like it would have been easier to follow if it was written differently. Reading all of the plot in third person made some of the information feel convoluted and hard to follow. Whereas if it was written in first person, it could have been more of a memory, flash back, or discussion from the main characters perspective.

Nevertheless this story is a story worth reading. Especially if you’ve been through trauma yourself, or if you’re just straight up tired of the stereotypic character and plots that are constantly showing up in this genre. If you want to dig deeper then the surface level mafia romance, if you’re want to experience genuine people with real world perspectives, then read this book.
