Inches of Trust #3

A Glimpse Inside

Rate this book
Brian isn't sure if he and Tristan are dating, but they're definitely seeing each other again. Tristan has always been quiet about his personal and professional life; Brian understands the latter; Tristan's job as a homicide detective doesn't make for light talk, but that doesn't mean Brian doesn't want to know more about Tristan. A little persistence goes a long way when Brian's brief foray into Tristan's home turns into a brief glimpse of Tristan's life and how he became the man that Brian can't let slip away.

I really wish this story had been told as a proper novella rather than in 10 page spurts. But I like it enough to keep buying them if they come out.

This is a sweet and fun short story that is primarily a sex scene between the two men but has additional details before and after to help progress the relationship. Although this is the first story involving these men I’ve read from Moler, apparently they are part of a series of "Sips," each including a different scene meant to advance their relationship. Even though I read this story alone and enjoyed it, it was clear there was quite a bit back story and set up between the men that was missing so I wouldn’t recommend picking up this series here. This is likely to resonate more with established fans of the duo.

This offering picks up where presumably the previous short story left off. There are references to past actions without much explanation except to remind readers where these two had left off. If you haven’t read the previous stories you’ll be slightly lost but you can ignore it in favor of the story presented. Brian and Tristan have apparently been on just a few dates and they seem to still be in the phase where great sex is just moving into something more like a relationship. Brian is clearly in favor of more depth to their acquaintance but Tristan’s feelings are unclear. As the story is told entirely in third person from Brian’s perspective, whether Tristan has any similar feelings is left to interpretation. There are several comments about Tristan and Brian talking about important matters but this is summed up in one or two sentences without the added depth of showing those conversations.

It’s difficult to comment on the characters or relationship as the story drops you into the middle of an ongoing series. These two are likable enough and the hints of humor and personality were enough to intrigue and entertain for the duration of the story. I wish there had been more conversation and depth on page instead of being told that it took place. It has certainly peaked my curiosity to check out the first story and see if I want to continue. For those more familiar with Brian and Tristan, the sex scene and emotion presented deepen their connection and present a romance that is likely to satisfy. The ending is left unresolved but hopeful with clear hints for more in the future.

Even as I enjoyed reading this, there was so much context and characterization missing that I wouldn’t recommend the story for new readers. There should also be a clear indication in the blurb that this is part of an ongoing series.
