Dragon Kin #4

Last Dragon Standing

Rate this book
He’s not the only flame in town…

I know what they see when they look at me. The charming, soft-spoken dragoness bred from the most powerful of royal bloodlines. A disguise stronger than any battle shield that allows me to keep all suitors at tail’s length. A technique that’s worked until him. Until Ragnar the Cunning, handsome barbarian warlord and warrior mage from the desolate Northlands. Unlike those who’ve come before him, he does not simply submit to my astounding charm and devastating smile. Instead he dismisses me as vapid, useless and, to my great annoyance, rather stupid!

Yet I’ll allow no male to dismiss me. Soon he’ll learn my worth, my many skills, and the strength of my will. For this one challenges me enough to make me want to ruthlessly taunt him, tease him and, finally, when the trap is set, bring him to his knees.

I should have read that one instead. A trip to flavor-town is off the chain.

I put this one in my TSTL shelf not for the book, but for me for getting this whole series from the library even though I knew I didn't really like this couple. So, will I continue reading?

This was my least favorite of all the Dragon Kin books. I admit, I wasn't looking forward to reading about Keita in the first place. The appearances she made in the previous books didn't really endear her to me. She came off more like the female characters in the Mangus Pack books - extremely bitchy. Also, that girl got around a lot. Gwenvael got around a lot too, but he came off as sweeter and funnier, and less crass. That made all the difference for me.

But, I was still extremely excited to read this book. I love this author's blend of hilarity, action, romance, and sex. She is the only author I've read with a style like this, and I love her campy books that don't take themselves seriously. Her characters are always over the top and you can't help but love them for those qualities.

This book was considerably longer than most of the previous books in the series, and there was a lot less focus on the relationship in it. I think that was the problem with the book. This one spent so much time on other events that we never really got any alone time with Keita and Ragnar. Their relationship and interactions seemed to be sprinkled in between interactions with the other characters. We also spent a lot more time in other people's pov's. That's not usually a problem, but it felt intrusive because the main romance was so underdeveloped.

When the book ended it felt like their relationship wasn't complete. I wonder if the author has plans to continue their relationship in another book. It really felt more "happy for now" as opposed to "happily ever after." There was no claiming or relationship resolution like in the other books. Keita's resistance to any sort of permanence precluded that. I just felt unsatisfied with it. I can't help but fear she'll one day dump him because everything got too heavy for her.

But, if you ignore the relationship this is still classic Aiken/Laurenston. That's why I gave it three stars instead of a lower grade. The humor still pops and the family antics are hilarious. I loved getting to see more of the previous characters. I was very amused by Gwenvael's jealousy over Ragnar. It was cute! I also loved how touchy Briec was about his daughter smiling. Little things like that made this whole book worth it!

There was a lot of new developments on the Izzy/Eibhear front. I loved all those scenes! I can't wait until we get to see them in their own book. I was really glad the whole thing developed like that. He needed a reality check that she's not a little girl and she's not waiting around forever. I also hope we get to see more of Ren in the future. I find him very interesting.

I can't wait to get my hands on the next one!

Ehhhhhhhh.
If this had been the first of Aiken's Dragon Kin books, then I wouldn't be going back for more. It's getting 3 stars from me only because I was entertained by all of the side stories that were going on in the background. 'Cause let me tell you, the romance in this was pretty awkward. And the way it ended was really less than romantic. I got the feeling Aiken was just looking for a Filler Couple so she could write about this impending battle that's going to happen in the next novel (I'm assuming).
Don't get me wrong, the lead-up to the battleish that happens at the end of this book was the only reason I rated it as highly as I did. That part was interesting. The weird romance between Ragnar and Keita? Not so much.
Keita was annoying. Not cute. Annoying. Also, she was a ditz. Yeah, at some point we're were supposed to realize that some of her actions were just exaggerated to play a part, but even knowing that, I still felt like she was an airhead underneath it all.
Next up were her commitment issues. Most of the time, I find this to be a likable quality in heroines. It's usually a good thing when a female character doesn't feel the need to settle down...and only finding her True Love is enough to make her want to give up her freedom. Blah, blah, blah. That was not the case with Keita. She just seemed like an emotional retard. I just...ugh.
Ragnar wasn't a bad character, but his coolness gets overshadowed by Keita's wacky antics.

In short, it's got a good overall plot, but don't expect to be wowed by the romance.

Back in 2012 is when I first read this one and I didn’t care for it, but now after listening to the audio I ended up enjoying Last Dragon Standing more. I think I enjoyed it more; because it's the second time around and because the audio made it that much more enjoyable. I also picked up a lot more and on the subplot too.

Our lead Keita the Viper is vapid, but it's all an act. I never liked Keita, but she's grown on me and the audio helped. Maybe it's that the humor comes out better in sound as well as the characters personality. Still she's my least favorite dragon and this is my least favorite book in the series.

Ragnar is a Lightning dragon from the Northern territories and is the leader of his clan. He's both a warrior, mage, and cunning in his efforts to keep his people secure and safe.

Audio Jan. 2019: I enjoyed the audio. I gave this book a 3 Star in 2012, but with the audio I now feel it’s a 4 Star.

Ejder'in Büyüsü

"Acı çekmen, sana başkalarına acı çektirme hakkı tanımaz."

"On dakika boyunca kusmamı seyrettin ve nefes alabileyim diye kırık burnumu yerine taktın.

Been awhile since I dove into this world. Book 4 sees us with Keita’s story. Daughter of the dragon queen and sister to a rowdy bunch of dragon shifters, Keita has stayed away from her family for years. But it’s time to come home. Someone is plotting for Mama’s throne, and her new baby nieces and nephew are in danger because of it.

While spending time protecting the throne from afar in the land of the Lightening Dargons up North, she runs into a Lord of said dragons leading her youngest brother home. As they head home together, they begin to put together the threads of a plot at the hands of heretofore mythical horde so grand, it will throw their entire world into war.

Keita is the key to exposing it and she’s gonna use the Northlander Ragnar the Cunning to do it. And hey, if she gets to bed him in the process, all the better. As long as he doesn’t get any idea of monogamous permanency, which is certainly not in her future cards. Or is it?

Less romancey and more fantasy/games of throney than the previous books in this series, I still dug this one. (no worries, there's still some sexy lovin in it, just not till pretty far in.)

Some of the books I’ve read thus far in the Dargon Kin have been hits for me and others? Not so much. This one worked for me. And it's because of the heroine and the hero. Keita is unapologetically male in her attitude about her sexuality- I liked that. She also is probably the most like her bristly mother, yet somehow she comes off more likeable. Not that she isn’t at war with everyone around her already …except for maybe Gwenvael- she seems to be the only one who gets that brother…but I just find her way more palatable then Queen Rhiannon. (And even her tough as nails sister-in-laws.) Who are we kidding, none of this author’s character are easy to like- but that’s what makes them so damn fun.

We get as much page time from the rest of the family as we do Keita and Ragnar and tons of Ebby and Izzy. There’s still one more book between me and their story and I’m not liking the reviews for Ebby and Izzy- but alas, I will read on. Because I can’t not.

Never in my entire life have I taken this long to finish a book. Not even when I first started reading.
It took me an entire week and a day but A week!
I would put it down and have no interest in picking it back up.
This was just a bloody sad book. I liked Keita and I liked Ragnar and I liked them together.
But it wasn't done right. The "romance" was so forced and jagged.

The side characters kept the book going but this book just forced me into taking a long break from the series.
It's entirely possible to probable I'll never pick it back up again.

"Last Dragon Standing" is the story of Keita and Ragnar.

Our heroine is a lusty, rabid, uncouth she-dragon, known for her propensity for males and false bimbo façade. Inside is a smart, talented soul who fights to keep her clan safe. She has always locked horns with the brave warrior dragon hero, until he is sent to retrieve her by the order of her queen mother. They face many challenges and adventures on the way, and we are reintroduced to the crazy Dragon Kin and its various members again. There is laughter, romance, loads of fights, dog eating jokes and we get updates on many other characters.

There's no harm in admitting about how stellar the writing of this book is and how wonderful the character development is. Everyone has shades of gray and mostly behave maturely. Now that being said, so much emphasis is put on their sexual histories that it makes me iffy. Even for the leads of the next book, we get to almost read one of them having sex with OP- Why am I going to then root for the main couple? I don't know, it doesnt work for me and puts me off the book. Yes they are dragons and don't live by human standards yada yada, but I have preferences and I will talk about them. The heroine of this book wasn't very likable, the hero kinda made up for it, the next book makes me not look forward to it but I can't skip it due to OCD, and that's that. I loved Annwyl here though, she's still a rockstar.

Enjoyable in parts. I am so put off by the whole Izzy and Eibhear part.

⭐⭐
2 stars.

➕ What I liked :

Some of the banter.

Some of the little glimpses of Éibhear and Izzy.

➖ What I disliked:

The romantic build up and chemistry was unconvincing/stilted… and there was no real “spark” or love between the main characters…. There was lust but not really any love/connection.

Dragged.

Verbose.

The book/story was too long and drawn out.

Repetitive.

Too much going on all over the place, too many side characters jumping into the story and taking focus from the main characters, but also too many other things going on in all different directions.

Annoying and unlikable heroine.
(All the main characters and side characters in these books and this series are selfish in different degrees but the heroine in this book is on a totally different level… she is beyond selfish...she is almost narcissistic)

Immature and shallow/conceited heroine.

The issues/problems between the heroine and her mother… but also between the heroine and her sister was resolved too quickly and in a rather unlikely way with all that drama and animosity between all of them.

Some parts are a little too formulaic.

Formulaic in the character description/visual appearance.
(Especially the hero and heroes of this book and series… except for their hair color/eye color the heroes in these books are rather interchangeable/similar when it comes to description/visual appearance… The heroines are little bit more different/varied from each other and it is great that many of the heroines are tall and strong/muscular...But some more and different body types and diversity is always more interesting/welcome)

The way the author handled advancing the Izzy and Éibhear storyline in this book and the OTT violence and drama with that and the contradictions with Izzy’s feelings towards Éibhear…. But also how much of a total flip the author does with the character Éibhear..... But also to some extent Izzy.
(I am still curious about the book about Éibhear and Izzy… but this part of their storyline is somewhat discouraging)

The very over the top dysfunction in the heroines family… it is dialed up too very OTT levels in this story/book… and not in the more weird and funny way it was in the other books in this series, but in a way that is more messed up and truly dysfunctional than before.

Annoying side character (The heroines mother)

The way the author portrays children in this book is weird even for children that are supernatural or have magic etc.
(Annwyl’s twins are toddlers but act nothing like toddlers)

Another great dragon kin book. Lots seem to happen and yet there were no big battles, or wars. Just preparation for the big one coming.

It has been about 2 years, in storyland, since we last saw Annwyl the Bloody and she has since had the demon twins. Talaith has also had her second daughter, though Izzy didn't even know she was pregnant as she has been out on patrol for 2 years learning to be a soldier.

The unlikely heroine of this episode is Keita, who has been assuming a guise of stupidity and uselessness. The better for her to gain the trust of her mother's, Queen Rhiannon, enemies, so she can extermiinate them.

Along comes Ragnor the Cunning, from the Northlands. He falls for the stupidity angle although not the charm, unlike all other males. He challenges Keita and he also intrigues her. He follows her and gradually realises all is not how it appears.

He decides he wants her for the next six or seven centuries but realises if he mentions that she will be running away very fast. He decides to keep her but not tell her that and it seems to work out just fine for him.

Meanwhile the war with the Irons and the Sovereigns grows ever closer.

Once again this author has provided some hilarious moments and a feeling like you really know these humans and dragons, normal things as well as extraordinary things are always happening but you don't feel rushed. Looking forward to the next instalment.

3 stars: entertaining PNR but not as great as earlier books

The fourth book in the Dragonkin series, the 'Last Dragon Standing' picks up immediately following What a Dragon Should Know. We previously met Ragnar the Cunning, a Northland lightning dragon, and Keita the Viper, a royal Southland fire dragon. Keita was captured by Ragnar's father and Ragnar released her. Her antics get on his nerves and he wants nothing more to do with her. When he is called by the Queen by their alliance to escort her son home, she gives him very specific directions. And who should he run into but Keita--up to her old tricks again. But he finds out there is a lot more to Keita than meets the eye, and he partners with her on a mission that might bring the dragon kingdom to war.

Ragnar was a tough, sexy, smart hero. However, Keita seemed flighty and self centered. More was revealed about her that partially redeemed her, but she's still my least favorite heroine in this series. It was great seeing the characters from the early books--Fearghus, Annwyl, Briec, Talaith, Gwenvael, Dagmar, Izzy, Eibhear, etc. I especially loved the side story about Izzy and Eibhear--hope their book is coming soon!

This was a good addition to the Dragonkin series. A laugh out loud funny fantasy romance, the plotline was a fun mix of action, adventure, suspense, mystery and romance. Like the earlier books, the snarky dialogue was humorous. But I would have liked more relationship development and emotional/romantic tension. What was there was good, but there should have been more of it. The mystery of the traitor and the potential war plotline were well done and had some good twists and turns. The Epilogue did a good job setting up the next book.

If you haven't read GA Aiken and you like fantasy or paranormal romance, I highly recommend this series. Also check out the author's Pride Stories and Magnus Pack series (written under Shelly Laurenston).

This one was just a "blah" sort of read for me. I have really liked this series so far, but this one just didn't have the spark as some of the other reads. I think it was mostly because I didn't feel any connection to the hero and heroine as a couple. They just didn't work for me. They never felt realistic or genuine. Even though I didn't care much for this particular book, it was nice getting updates on characters from the previous books that I adored. I will still continue this series.

3.5 stars. Not on par with the first 3 books in the series. Keita & Ragnar seemed like they were thrown together; there was no real build up to their relationship. I did enjoy seeing all the other characters in the "family" and how much they've grown since book 3. An okay read, overall.

Wow there was a lot going on Last Dragon Standing which was less romance-y than the rest of the books in this series but which still had plenty of the laugh out loud moments (and a bit of the crass language) you'd expect from this Shelley Laurenston alter ego.

In the spotlight this time is Lightning Dragon Ragnar the Cunning leader of the Northern 'barbarians' who is charged with bringing Fire Dragon Keita the Viper - youngest daughter of Queen Rhiannon and sister to all the former leading dragons - back to her 'lazy southland' family. We also get to see lots of former Southland dragons and their mates as `something wicked this way comes'.

Although I love the way that not-as-flighty-as-she-seems Keita and the oh-so-controlled Ragnar's get under each other's skin once the `game' is on, their romance wasn't as well developed as the ones in the previous books. And even though there is some pay off - the sealing of Keita and Ragnar's `deal' was pretty darn steamy - I didn't think that Ragnar and Keita's story seemed finished. (I am hoping their story will continue as a side thread in the future books the way that Brastias and Morfyd's has been.)

Still there was so much good stuff going on in Last Dragon Standing that I didn't mind that Ragnar and Keita had to share their screen time with everyone else. I still loved all of interactions between Keita's dysfunctional family - parents, siblings, aunts and cousins - and perversely quite often I found the twisted relationships between the often borderline psychotic females (often accompanied by screaming and hair pulling) to be hilarious.

I also enjoyed watching as Aiken threw a bit more fuel on the fire which smolders between Éibhear and Izzy - she's no longer sixteen but Éibhear is still in denial. Oh and I thought that Keita's mysterious eastern dragon buddy Ren, was really intriguing, as was the mention of his eastern kin and of sand and water dragons.

Now I am dying to know, what happens next - big things loom on the series arc. And I can't wait to find out who will be Aiken's next starring pair - probably not Éibhear and Izzy they still have some growing up to do, hmmm, maybe Ren and Anwyl's twins' new Nanny or maybe Aiken will bring in one of the sand dragons or one of the zany dragon aunts or cousins. There are so many intriguing possibilities that Aiken should be able to keep the series going for a long time.

Keita is the youngest daughter of Queen Rhiannon, and thought of as the female version of her brother Gwenvale. She's incredibly flirty, girly and known to be unreliable. However, she may not be as unreliable as everyone thinks, in fact Keita isn't what she appears to be at all. Everyone believes Keita hates her mother when she may just be the most loyal out of all the children. Rhiannon may not see it this way though when she decides to throw her own daughter to their enemy, the lightening dragons.

Ragnor is the leader of the Lightening dragons but he doesn't really fit in there. His kind value strength and cruelty, while he values intelligence and kindness. Ragnar has to deal with the White Dragon Queen if he wants his people to have a solid alliance, specially with the Ice Dragons eyeing his clans defenses. He owes Rhiannon, but that doesn't mean he wants to be stuck with her flighty daughter.

Annwyl and the clan are back playing a big role in this book. Annwyls lil half-dragon munchkins are two years old. They seem a bit odd to everyone, most people are just terrified of them, but their new nanny is not. Talaith and Briec have also had a bundle of joy, dubbed as Briecs "perfect perfect daughter", but she isn't normal either. In fact, there may be a war coming because of these children and it'll take everyones help to protect them.

A lot is going on in this book, a few years has passed since the last one which has also resulted in a lot of new stuff going on. I'll be honest and say I'm not a fan of Keita, even after reading this book. Ragnar and the rest of the characters are what saved this book for me. I just think Keita is kinda a useless character, and was hoping maybe she'd disappear and we'd suddenly get a better heroine. Although I didn't like her the rest of the book was fantastic, it definitely set up the storyline for the next few books.

This might actually be a 2.5 star. While I enjoy the snappy dialogue and bitchy characters (funny one), it was just too all over the place. The main couple got lost along the way early on. I was more interested in Ebihar (or however you spell his name) - the big blue dragon, and Izzy. And the best scene was when E beat up her lover Celyn.

That's about it. Which really doesn't say much about the very LONG book and the weak MCs (in relation to each other).

I enjoyed this fourth in the series more than the last book, found the main couple more of match, sniping but funny. Both manipulative, proud and lots of head butting - but bringing the zing and fizz to their romance.
Unfortunately like book 3 this suffered from the author spending too much time with other characters. Their stories took up too much time and energy away from the main couple.

Love this author, but she has a tendency to spread her stories/the main romance too thin because she's trying to interweave quality time with too many secondary/main characters and advance their storylines at the cost of the book/romance she is supposed to be delivering.

I've read other authors who perform this much more successfully. Love Jane Cousins and her Southern Sanctuary Series - she interweaves on going secondary storylines with little touches. And brings back fave main characters and progresses their lives through the main couple she is featuring but never lets them overshadow - so it feels cohesive but at the same time brings the feels as we catch up with other characters.

Re-read

Part of my binge re-read Dragon Kin series, and I had read this almost 4 years ago. You don't believe how long since the last time I read Eibhear's book. Like..2-3 years ago. No wonder I really enjoy this re-read experience. I read some subplot and trivial part that at first I didn't bother to acknowledge, or simply that I read it too fast I didn't pay attention.

I agree that the story is a little bit dragging. But, contrary to some reviewers, I like Keita. Re-read make me understand her lack of commitment. This book is unique, because so far, it's have a HFN aka Happily for Now. For a hardcore romance that prefer their HEA, it's uncalled for, or a little bit unsettling. I did it at first, but this second read, I appraise how Aiken handle Keita and Ragnar's relationship.

See..many may see that Keita is playing hard to get. I think otherwise. She just doesn't want to commit and she hate clingy men. Ragnar know about that, and so he give her time, while courting her too. Beside, at first, Ragnar see Keita as vapid, insipid, rather stupid and spoiled royals. Can't blame him, since from previous books, Keita is female version of Gwenvael. Yet, like Gwenvael too, those who seems like a fool at first, usually playing dangerous games. Aiken know about one of the fantasy trope, those fools that usually underrated, often go unnoticeable or looking down by others, is sometimes are the most dangerous players. I just think Ragnar's groveling moment is too short, but Keita also a woman whom didn't hold grudges for long. She's an antithesis of TSTL women so many out there, although her appearance can state otherwise. But...a woman that make her man work hard to win her heart, is a woman (or in Keita case, dragoness) worth to living for.

Start from What a Dragon Should Know, Dragon Kin books always have some subplots. A fact that while many can find it too exhausting, but some will find it entertaining. This is what fantasy romance should be. Not just a simple or linear plot race toward the end. I like that Aiken still give her old characters appearance, prove that their life didn't end just because they already have their HEA. They are still important characters and also play important roles.

Aiken know how mix fantasy, dragon, family theme, brawling, violence, sex, and spiced it up all with comedy of errors. I know that I will always entertained by her writing, and I think you should start read her books too! :D

My first review....rather short, is it? :P

4,5 stars
I really love G.A.Aiken books (also her Shelly Laurenston's) and surprise to know how much I enjoy the story of the spoiled princess, Keita the Viper and the liar monk, Ragnar the Cunning. My view of Keita is change through this book, and Ms Aiken always write her characters are more than that they seems to be.

Keita’s book was not what I expected. I thought there would be a lot of tupping. Lots of hot sex and only that.

I was wrong.

There is so much more to Keita the Red that I didn’t know about. In my head, she was just a girl version of her brother, Gwenvael but we soon find out that Keita has an important purpose and that she will do anything to protect her family.

Ragnar wasn’t exactly my favourite character in the previous books. However, that too changed as I read this book. It’s a testament to Aiken’s writing that she is able to convince me as a reader to feel for these characters whom I initially didn’t care about.

Though the romance isn’t the best of the series, it’s still very cute and believable. I liked that Aiken didn’t make Keita suddenly fall heads over heels for Ragnar. It was a slow progression. She finally meets someone who holds her attention while still keeping her on her toes.

I loved reading about familiar faces. It’s one of the best parts about this series because even though you may have finished a couple’s book, they have a continual presence throughout the series that not only enhances their development as characters but furthers the storyline.

The war with the Irons is starting and oh my god, I loved reading all the war politics. For me, this book was made better because of it.

If you haven’t tried this series, then you are definitely missing out. I am flying through this series and can only hope that there are a thousand more because it has it all!

I just love this series, part of the appeal is the crazy antics of the dragon family, the way the all love each other, but still fight, call names, and their actions and thought patterns are like jumping beans on speed. It really takes a lot to follow some of the things that happen as the action and conversations turn on a dime, but since this seems to be the way that I think I have no problems keeping up.

In a way I hadn't been looking forward to this book as Keita is my least favorite, she has always seemed like a spoiled, vain, vapid brat. As the book started out it seemed like my thoughts were valid ones, but I was glad to learn that Keita isn't what she seems. I did like Ragnar, although he seemed liked more of an after thought in this book. There was so much going on with the larger story arc that the story of Keita and Ragnar was a back burner.

But with that said, I did love the larger story arc, it left enough for all of the past characters to shine and be who we learned to love in the earlier books. I loved that Izzy was back and still had issues with Eibhear and that maybe, just maybe his is starting to realize what the rest of us know.

I can't wait for the next book for some resolutions with a bunch of the story lines!!

What a boring book and equally boring couple - Keita and Ragnar. I was more interested in the children and Eibhear and Izzy.

However, I am confused with the direction she is going with Izzy. I love strong women but damn don't confess your love for one man and f**king his cousin on the side and expect him to confess his dying love. I am all about a woman not waiting on a man but damn venture out beyond his family.

I thought I was going to loathe this book because Keita was not a favorite character and Ragnar seemed too uncaring, but it didn't suck. Keita is known as the whore of the family. Ragnar is a battle mage dragon who travels about as a monk. Part of the appeal of this book was the continuation of the overall plot. It's over 300 pages long, but includes many other POV's than just Keita & Ragnar.

I love when series books includes past characters that I've grown to adore. Last Dragon Standing was just such a book! It has a great plot, action packed and hilarious character interaction. So, easy, fun and exciting how can you go wrong.

I liked everything about this book, but the MCS! I loathed Keita and Ragnar was lackluster at best. I would've dnf'ed if not for the rest of the story. However, I don't know if I will continue this series.

Finally done! Maybe later I'll do a proper review. Then again, maybe I'll hopefully wash this one from my brain.
