Collects Secret War (2004) #1-5. When Nick Fury finds a connection between many of Marvel's deadliest villains, he puts together a team of the most misunderstood heroes for a secret mission to do what the U.S. government could never allow.
A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.
Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.
Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.
Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.
Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.
Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.
He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.
I read this one back in 2009 and loved it, but I wasn't sure how well it would hold up. Turns out, pretty well! It's not a perfect story, but in comparison to some of the longer events I've read lately, this one had more of a coherent feel to it. Like, the whole story was contained within these pages. I didn't feel like I needed to search out tie-ins, or read anything before I read this. Just...BOOM. One and done.
The story is pretty simple. It opens with Luke Cage getting his ass handed to him by some unknown villain. When Nick Fury is notified, he freaks and goes straight to the hospital. The rest of the plot unfolds as you find out that the attack was brought on by an unsanctioned mission that overthrew the (at the time) newly elected Latverian leader.
Daredevil is also attacked, but with Spider-man's help they both escape. Pete had originally come to Matt because he was having these odd memories resurface of the two of them fighting in Latveria. But they were never in Latveria, right? Fury! You got some 'splainin to dooooo!
Huge fights, crazy terrorists, heroes missing chunks of time, and one massive explosion! Ka-boosh!
So was this a 4 star story? Nah. Probably closer to 3, but the art nudged it up by making it so easy for me to look at. Oh, and remember when Daisy Johnson looked like Angelina Jolie? This story does...
Anyhoo. As I mentioned, this one was a re-read for me, and I was a little worried because I remembered really liking it. Why would that worry me? Well, Sam (who was the ringleader of this buddy read) is like a shark...circling, waiting. Only he doesn't attack when he smells blood, he attacks when he smells contentment. Specifically, mine. And here's how I envisioned Sam's reaction to this one: This book is pants! Another forgettable Bendis event that sucked hours out of my life. *deep sigh* Of course you would like this, Anne. It must be something in your hillbilly DNA that makes you giddy when bad puns and mindless explosions happen on the same page. Good God, woman! I didn't know inbreeding caused webbed toes and horrible taste! Why don't you just go get another deep-fried Twinkie, tuck in your backbewbs, and settle in to enjoy the next Michael Bay movie while you're at it?
Brian Michael Bendis' rendition of a 'secret war' as the forces of good cross a line and attempt to assassinate a terrorist supporting leader of a sovereign nation (an ally of the USA) and the ensuing fallout a year later. Integral to the Bendis Marvel continuity and a pretty good story. A 7 out of 12, Three Star read, where Bendis and co. bring even more realism into the Marvel universe not only with Government misuse of super being resources, but also the fallout form other nations involved! 2022, 2014 and 2011 read
This TPB edition collect the 5 issues of the mini-series “Secret War”, that it’s a totally different comic book event than the one titled “Secret Wars” (plural).
Creative Team:
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Illustrator: Gabrielle Dell’Otto
ASTONISHING START WITH POOR FINALE
This brief comic book miniseries begins with three kickin’-butt issues but sadly, the remaining last two issues were so lame that at the end I thought that the fairest rating was 3 stars leaving it right in the middle of the range of rating.
FANTASTIC ARTWORK
This miniseries is illustrated by Gabrielle Dell’Otto and it’s a real visual masterpiece! It’s a real delight to look at to all that artwork so impressive and beautiful. This is one of the highest bonus to get this story if you want to read it.
MARVELOUS CONCEPT
Brian Michael Bendis, the writer, conceived a great idea for this miniseries.
Nick Fury, director of SHIELD, found out that Latveria was financing B-List supervillains in American soil as a way to make indirect domestic terrorism, but that discovery is linked way back into the past to uncover a very dark truth about how was possible that brainless poor criminals were operating expensive high-tech weaponry and also how was that major super-heroes seemed to face supervillains with themed-matched shows.
The truth is so scary and so dark AND SO LOGICAL that Nick Fury is afraid.
Nick ... Fury ... is ... afraid.
Therefore you should be scary as crap!!!
ONE HECK OF A TEAM
Nick Fury recruits in secret a strike team…
Captain America, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Luke Cage along with SHIELD operatives: Black Widow and Daisy Johnson (which was introduced in this miniseries AND she is the same character known as Skye in the TV series Agents of SHIELD).
Their mission?
Overthrow Latveria’s government.
Dang!
SO FAR SO GOOD BUT…
Everything was soaring until then!
The first three comic book issues were masterpieces.
Brilliant conception merging with priceless artwork.
And while the artwork kept to be as good as before…
…sadly, in my humble opinion, the remaining two issues were poorly developed just to present the obligatory brainless super-powered brawl.
I was amazed (and not in a good way) how such smart miniseries was concluded with such unimaginative battle between characters with super-powers.
However, still I recommend this comic book miniseries, since obviously I haven’t spoiled the rich goods that you will find there.
Nick Fury discovers that the Latverian government is secretly bankrolling a bunch of second-rate supervillains to cause terror stateside and decides to take the fight to their doorstep with a little help from his friends. Except the superheroes don’t know how far Fury is willing to go to protect his homeland…
I honestly thought Secret War might be good as it’s from around the time of Brian Michael Bendis’ Daredevil run, which is superb. But nope - Secret War is an utter nightmare of a mess from start to finish!
This might be Bendis’ worst-written book. I couldn’t have told you what the story or the point of anything was until the second half of the final issue - that’s how vague and badly structured it is! Because of that, I didn’t give a fig over anything that was happening up to that point as I was so confused. The explanation we eventually get, while enlightening things slightly, is still lousy.
The time jumps, from a year ago to the present, as well as the overall sequencing, are poorly laid out and don’t help you make sense of the already-shaky story. Characters are in Latveria in one scene and then questioning whether they were there in another, which is just baffling to see. No clue either why Fury picked these specific superheroes for his Secret War. There’s a villain but she only appears briefly towards the end - she’s not anyone recognisable so nothing to get excited about - and there are an overabundance of the usual big dumb fight scenes that eat up the page count and aren’t in the least bit interesting.
Gabriele Dell’Otto’s painted artwork is very pretty though it’s a little too heavy on the blacks, making the pages murky-looking. Daisy Johnson, one of the main characters from the Agents of SHIELD TV show, is introduced in this book and she’s weirdly drawn exactly like Angelina Jolie in Hackers - why?! It’s so bizarre!
Though it’s only five issues long, the book is heavily padded out with a ton of dreary “secret files of Nick Fury” crap which consist of character profiles, transcripts from interviews - nothing worth reading basically.
Secret War is a sloppily executed story and a horribly boring read. I just don’t get the point of this one - was it some kind of criticism of Bush’s War on Terror? If so, I don’t know what we were meant to take away from it. It’s… bad? Was it to make Nick Fury look like a crazy, bloodthirsty lunatic - why? Just awful, awful stuff – Secret War is the comics equivalent of a Hack Snyder movie!
Does he look like some wishy-washy namby-pamby pushover? Does he look like the guy who lets terrorists get away even if the president tells him to do so?
What does Nick Fury look like?
He looks like the guy who gets the job done regardless of the consequences.
I don't know why I took so long to read Secret War. It must have been brain damage because it makes no sense that I waited this long. Nick Fury demonstrates with simplicity why he's not to be messed with. When he discovers who has been funding the tech based villains in the US, he doesn't hesitate to take care of the problem even after the President says they'd use diplomacy. Some characters and people may not like Nick Fury, but they absolutely respect and fear him.
So what does Nick Fury look like?
Despite everything he looks like a guy you'd rather have with you than against you.
Well now I know why marvel gave Bendis the keys to the Avengers back in mid 2000's.
So what's secret war? Well Fury needed a mission complete. One he knew wouldn't be possible after his own goverment said "nah we good." so what does he do? Recruit some of the biggest superheroes to help him complete the mission including Spider-man, Captain America, Daredevil, Logan, Cage, and more! However...Nick Fury needs to cross a very dark line. One that shouldn't be crossed when fighting for "good" but he does anyway and what happens when those heroes don't remember it?
Good: The art is solid and shows some great emotions on the faces. The fights are brutal and intense. The pacing is crazy quick with a lot of twist and turns and some emotional great moments. The banter works really well and the characters you expect to do the most do it. I also really enjoyed the ending.
Bad: Some of the art work makes it hard to follow what's happening. I also think some of the plotting, structure wise, can be a bit confusing at times.
Overall this is a dark take on Nick Fury's motives and mission. It shows who he is really and also gives a lot of reasons to want the heroes in here working together which is what basically forms the New Avengers. So I can see why Bendis was given the keys to the Avengers after this mini-series. A 4 out of 5.
This is my third time re-reading this formative tale of one of white-and-old-Nick Fury’s last outings in the Marvel universe.
The art is *so* beautiful, the models for our heroes are so unusually gorgeous, I hardly recognise anyone I'm reading about. It's like I'm looking at Earth-619, where symmetry and smooth skin are omnipresent.
I love that Bendis called out one of the most obvious-in-hindsight angles of all the capes-and-tech types: where the fuck does the funding come from for these low-rent baddies?
And I love that the Bendis of 2007(?) was still a conscientious-enough writer that he'd sit down and figure out the essence of every character he wrote:
I don't normally like these stories you gotta re-read to figure out the slippery timeline shenanigans, but this one hooked me from the start. My friend Sam Quixote hates this book for this and other reasons, and I respect Sam for generally having deeper thoughts about comics than I do, but gotta disagree here. The fact you don't know exactly what's going on - the unreliable narrator framing - makes this mystery an even more intriguing mystery:
(kinda on the nose eh?)
1st review: Man, after years of devouring all of Bendis' story arcs that rippled out from this, it was long overdue to go back and remember what actually happened to kick it all off. Great storytelling, with cryptic flashbacks and a trickle of what happened being spooled out throughout the issues. Gritty, unapologetic and a helluva premise on which to hang so many plots hereafter.
And the artwork! This is why I cannot read 20th-century comics any longer. The quality, detail and artistic prowess are first-rate - just simply beautiful to look at. I would hang any frame from this book on my wall - it's that good. I had to heck the credits a few times, 'cause I swore it looked like Alex Ross was doing this work.
Stellar piece of graphic storytelling, and an essential read for anyone who's read any of the major arcs in Marvel of the past few years.
I wasn't reading Marvel when this was first published, so I missed it. I'm glad I went back for it. As far as "event" comics go (and I'm not sure how much of an event this was at the time) this is remarkably focused and character driven. I've seen the changes, mostly relatively subtle, that this single story brought to the Marvel Universe. I wish I'd read this before Original Sin, actually, because it would have been good to see where it started.
This is Bendis, so much of the book actually revolves around conversations. Important conversations, some of them, but there is an awful lot of talking. Even Wolverine uses his words when he finds out exactly how much he's been manipulated. He also uses his claws, because he's Wolverine, but he didn't just yell. More effective that way, I think.
I have to say, this is one incredibly attractive book. The art is very, very good, and it perfectly suits the mood of the story. The covers are especially great. Sure, they're simple character shots, but they're very well done, and they fit the "Nick Fury's files" thing. Which, unfortunately, I wasn't really a fan of. The interrogation transcripts could be interesting, but I'm not really a fan of dossiers being included in stories.
Nick Fury finds a disturbing connection between a tech villain and the government of Latveria. He leads (and misleads) a team of superheroes in a preemptive strike against Latveria's prime minister, Lucia Von Bardas, claiming it as a defensive move to prevent terrorist attacks. Hilarity ensues.
The title seems to indicate it's going to relate to the Secret Wars of 1985, but the story is actually an allegory about war in general and a couple in particular some Americans might be familiar with. Bendis seems to do a very nice job covering all of his bases when describing Fury's motives and his point of view. It's a relevant story dealing with real world issues that made me think, and that's generally the highest praise I can give a comic book. My only complaint is that the end seemed incomplete, but that makes sense if this really is an allegory.
It deals with Fury assembling a squad of Secret Avengers and going to Latveria to stop threats of Lucia Bardas the PM who has been supplying technological weapons to American villains and well that doesn't sit well with him but a year later when these Avengers minds are wiped out and they remember it again and are attacked by the villains it opens a whole can of worms and the secrets spilled will be big. They fight like some of the most powerful tech villains and also Fury vs Avengers and distrust between them and SHIELD will have big consequences.
Its a good volume but the slow nature of it kills the buzz of reading it and also it could have used Iron man and rather wait to tell the main story in the last issue, they should have said it upfront and explore the consequences from that angle. Overall its a good read and the art is pretty good but for selective people. I like how we see the secret files Fury has maintained on everyone and mission logs and the introduction of Quake here!
Btw Nick Fury kraldır, aksini iddia eden hydra ajanıdır.
”I didn’t start this war, but damn it to hell, I’m not going to lose it.”
I read Secret War because it kept being referenced in other comics that I have read. Especially in the New Avengers, also written by Brian Michael Bendis (at least part of it). So I was glad to see some of the story lines from a new angle.
Actually this is one of the coolest things about really reading a ton of comic books. I read mostly Marvel and the more Marvel I read the more I'm able to pick up on. There was a scene in this book that I had already read in another book but from a different character's perspective. That was actually pretty exciting, to know what was happening and where that other character went next.
However, that's also the problem with comic books. If you haven't read a lot of them you're far more likely to get lost. Books like Secret War tie into a lot of other lines and rely on you being at least familiar with a lot of them before picking it up.
3.5 stars but I’ll round up to 4 beacsue Gabriele Dell’Otto’s painted art is amazing. So there is a bunch o low level crooks using some high end tech that they shouldn’t be able to afford. Fury discovers the Tinkerer is supplying the tech but there is someone funding the Tinkerer. Fury finds out who and takes the info to his superiors only to find out they aren’t going to do anything about it. So Fury secretly puts together a team of heroes to handle it himself. Pretty cool paced out story with a little bit of shady doings by Fury all put together well by some really great artwork.
Captain America. Spider-Man. Daredevil. Wolverine. Black Widow. Luke Cage. On a top secret under the rader black ops mission lead by S.H.I.E.L.D. head Nick Fury to overthrow (and assassinate) the government of another country, that's going to do terrorist acts on US soil. Queue morally questionable actions of noble heroes, memory-wipes, retributions-fallout and morality questions without answers. Yup, they don't make comicbook storylines like this anymore these days. Compact, to-the-point, thoughtful, and wildly entertaining. That's how crossover event stories should be done!
Wow for once I actually really like a crossover comic. Having been born in the mid 90s, this time period of Marvel I have the fondest memories of. Brian Michael Bendis kicked off an entire new era for Marvel with this comic, and redefined the Marvel universe. Can’t wait to read House of M next!
A very good espionage inspired super hero story. The painted art is in the same league as someone like Alex Ross, and really helps give the story more production value. I remember when this first came out, and it took forever because of the art. But it was always worth waiting for. It's also a prequel of sorts to Bendis' New Avengers run, as many of the characters who take part in Fury's 'Secret War' eventually become New Avengers. There's also some plot threads that hang over. The SHIELD files are also worth reading because they add a bit more background to the story and some of the supporting cast. A very good read indeed.
Secret War written by Brian Michael Bendis but more importantly drawn by Gabrielle Del'Otto. This tells the story of the consequences of Nick Fury's illegal war in an Eastern Europe country. The story was very entertaining but the art is what makes this book brilliant, Del'Otto has a unique photo realistic style which now seems to be reserved for covers only five stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Avengers dağıldı ile aarsındaki bağlantıyı çözebilmiş değilim. Diğer marvel ve DC çizimlerine kıyasla daha az sevdim çizim tarzını olay örgüsü fena değildi Hopefully new avengers 1 buradan devam eder
