Ewan Geddes had once set Claire's girlish heart racing. But that was back when he was a servant and she the laird's awkward daughter. Now he'd returned, an upstart fortune hunter bent on her sister, and Claire Talbot swore to stop any heartbreak before it started –- even if that meant tempting away a man who'd grown decidedly more appealing.
Claire Talbot had to be the most exasperating woman in England or Scotland, Ewan decided. And she stood between him and the bride he wanted! Or did she? For her grace and fire made him yearn that every day be an adventure...and every night a dream come true!
**MINOR SPOILERS** This is a standalone book set in 1875 England and Scotland. Ewan grew up as a gillie (hunting and fishing guide) on the Scottish estate of a lord. He fell in love with the lord’s younger daughter, Tessa, while unknowingly being liked by the older daughter, Claire. When he is discovered kissing the lord’s daughter, he is sent off to the US. Through determination, he begins to make his fortune. 10 years later, he is back to try to marry Tessa. The story has an improbable premise but it quickly descended into childish and unlikeable behavior on the part of Ewan and Claire. At first, they only snipe at each other. Claire is still attracted to him but thinks that he is a fortune hunter trying to marry Tessa. In fact, Ewan is now rich and wants to marry her. He has a shipping business but lives in Pittsburgh (a city on the Atlantic coast probably makes more sense). They spar ham-handedly as Claire tries to attract him with her fortune in order to lure him away from Tessa. Eventually, Ewan, in an immature fit, jumps overboard while they are sailing to Scotland. Just when the story looks like it might turn around, another overly dramatic event will happen. Later in the book, you find out that the daughter he kissed was Claire and not Tessa and he did not know it. There is no explanation for why he would have made such a mistake. They look nothing alike. Ewan wants to hide the fact that he is now rich from Tessa, her mother, and Claire in order to try to win her hand based on love alone. He claims to work for the company he owns but at a low level. He tells Claire that he traveled to London in steerage and I have no idea why someone with a fortune would do so. The book takes place over a few days and allows for very little relationship development. Claire has taken over her grandfather’s business and runs it well. I liked the fact that she was a strong and capable business woman at that time. I do not plan to continue reading this author. I only finished this book to write a review.
It's a quick read but got everything I'm looking for in a story. The chemistry, the strong heroines, the wit.. And I almost feel like I'm in Scotland!
I love every minute of reading this one.
Else if,sly the unpredictable situation like Man overboard or over bored. Haha.. I love that they are so similar and how it truly differentiate the feelings that he had between the sisters. Because initially I wasn't convince that I would tolerate it.
And I like that Claire strong enough and mature enough to admit her flaws and mistakes. It's make her likable.
Overall 4.5 stars read
The kind i want to re read when I want that nice feeling after
Claire Talbot is a woman who broke the typical mold of a Regency-era woman. She lives in a man's world, undertaking a man's role and responsibilities. Most surprising is the fact that she does it so well. She has been more successful than her father ever was, and more successful than any other male she since known or met. It is not surprising that she would be sought after for the impressive fortune she has managed to accumulate, not surprising at all considering her serious lack of those other qualities men find so desirable in a woman. Her sister, on the other hand, has been everything Claire is not - beautiful, vivacious, enchanting, and socially eloquent. Long ago Claire had settled on the decision that she would never marry. Why should she? She has managed more than well enough on her own up to this point. If she cannot be wanted and loved for herself, it is by far preferable to be the ruler of one's own destiny. Her childish, girlhood dreams of marriage and family were extinguished long ago when a certain young man ran off never to return. No matter that even had he not, he only had eyes for her sister, Tessa, and a sharp tongue with her. She had learned to guard her heart and hide her emotions well since that long ago time.
Ewen had traveled far to come back to the home of his youth after so many years away. He was now a man full grown. A man who had accomplished the seemingly impossible and turned his fortunes and his destiny. He had only one thing on his mind. One thing he had yet to attain, and the object of his desire was now in his arms twirling around the dance floor in a place he never would have belonged to in his old life. He will not walk away this time, no matter the possible threats or consequences that might be hurled his way. He had done it once, and lived to sorely regret it. It had been pure luck to get this second chance at happiness with the one woman he has always been sure should have been his. Now, if he can only out-maneuver that she-devil of a sister of hers! He was once used to her taunts and insults, could even admit she had gotten the better of him a time or two. However, even her viper of a tongue would not deter him. In truth, her challenges were once very entertaining, and he could admit to looking forward to victory while winning the hand of her sister.
Highland Rogue, although blessed with a romance topic that I adore, did not live up to the high hopes I had at reading the title. The character depictions were too single dimensional to garner any real interest on my part. I felt neutral about them throughout the entire story, neither cheering for their success or blissfully praying for their downfall. They really left me not caring at all what happened to them or the rest of the story. I hate to admit, this was one of those rare occasions when I just couldn't wait for the book to end. It was not bad enough to leave it unfinished because I so hate to do that, but there was more than one instance when I seriously thought about it. I want characters and a story line that will either garner my love and loyalty, pain and heartache, or hatred and ire. This accomplished none of those things. Neutrality equates to blandness. A romance without nuances of flavor cannot elicit passion and desire which all romances need, in my opinion. I can only generously bestow a 2-star rating for this rather dull romance.
Setting: London, 1875; Strathandrew, Scotland; family yacht marlet
Theme: Love, past hurts, past loves, current feelings. Character: Claire Brancaster Talbot – a plain woman, inherited her father’s shipping business and is running it well, she doesn’t expect to marry – realizing her few suitors were after her money, no her. Growing up she had a crush on Ewan, a gillie at the Scotland estate where the family visited in the summer… she tormented him, but he only had eyes for her half sister. Mr. Catchpole – the manager at Brancaster, who walks her down the aisle. Lady Lydiard – her stepmother, proper, doesn’t know what to make of Claire’s untraditional ways. Spencer Stanton – Tessa’s patient fiancé – he is away. Tessa Talbot – Claire’s beautiful, flighty, somewhat spoiled half sister. She is flattered by and flirts with Ewan, encouraging his suit. Ewan Geddes – once a gillie (hunter’s caddy) on the Strathandrew estate, surrounded by friends and family… he grew up fascinated by Tessa when she came to visit each summer, tolerated Claire when he even noticed her… and on Tessa’s 17th birthday, arranged to give a kiss… (though he unknowingly kissed Claire instead)… and her father found out and fired him and put him on a boat to America. In America, he made his fortune, and now owns his own shipping company. He read about Tessa’s engagement, remembered his early feelings for her, and returns to London with the intention of wooing her away from her fiancé.
Summary: Claire furious when she realizes Ewan is the one wooing her half sister – she remembered her crush and how disappointed she was… and she wants to protect Tessa from him and his marrying her money. She contrives with her aunt to take Ewan on the yacht to Scotland, with her stepmother & sister following by train, and to woo him away from her sister – with her money as much as with her charm… And their time together on the yacht, and later in Scotland – they fall in love… and though there’s a bit of a hiccup when she finds out he was hiding his great wealth (and competitive shipping business)… and when he finds out that she had set out to trap him… they each remember their time, their discussions, their trust… and Spencer shows up, challenges Ewan to a duel… both survive, become friends, and they have a double wedding.

«Congratulazioni, Ewan Geddes. Ci siete finalmente arrivato, anche se con dieci anni di ritardo.» «Ah, ragazza mia!»
Dear author, it was very annoying to remember every few pages how much beautiful, graceful and other foolishness Claire's sister was. That said, the epic scene in which Ewan literally throws himself overboard! XD And then he's saved by Claire. XD That baka! He's so silly.
Enjoyed it. The characters were very likable. The story line moved along nicely. Just enough "romance" to suit me just fine but others might prefer more.
