It's picture day at the dog park. But before the first photo can be taken, an exuberant pack of pups needs a bit of grooming. So they’re off to Shampoodle, the local pet salon, where the eager dogs simply cannot sit still. And when some curious cats stop by, things go from messy to mayhem.

My son Gabriel won his very first Goodreads First-Reads book (signed by author Joan Holub- thank you)! And boy was he ecstatic... as I tore open the manila envelope, he began clapping then took the book and began "reading/babbling". He loves his books so this was exciting. First of all, the cover illustration by Tim Bowers is so cute and grabbed Gabriel's attention quickly. He kept looking at the dog with bubbles on his head and laughing out loud. Gabriel's a little young for the book (only 9 months, not yet the suggested pre-school age) but the alliteration & rhyme scheme captivated him as well as the fact it is about doggies. I can see this being a great "Step into Reading" for him later (& any pre-schooler-kindergartner.) This is already a favorite having been read twice tonight. And Gabriel happily played with the bubbles in his bath like a Shampoodle!

First off, how fun is the name shampoodle? I can already feel that I'm going to start wandering around, saying I have to shampoodle my hair today. And then people will have yet another reason to think I'm crazy.
Appetizer: This early reader is a Step into Reading step 2 book. In it, it's bog picture day, so a young boy and girl (both white, in case you're on the search for more racial representation in early readers) take seven dogs to be groomed before they have their picture taken.
The grooming process is complicated when a few curious cats show up, causing chaos.
The story uses a lot of rhymes to help students with the sounds (but there is no clear rhyme scheme, so it may not be that helpful).
The illustrations will help provide visual cues, but not enough for new readers to figure out all the words on a page for themselves. The illustrations do include a lot of action though and quite a bit of humorous imagery. I personally liked that a sheepdog was included among the many dogs getting groomed (I had one when I was growing up).
Despite those plus sides, I didn't like most of the text of the story. I read the book out loud (as a teacher would most likely ask a beginning reader to do) and I was regularly stumbling over the words. The phrases are very clunky. While I suppose some might argue that this will help new readers to be aware of the sounds, I think the text may be too frustrating for that.
Dinner Conversation:
"At the park, it's picture day. Dogs need grooming right away."
"We do dog-dos."
"Nosy kitties. Out for fun. Puppies spot them. Run, cats, run!"
"Groomer snipping gets a care. Dogs end up with wacky hair."
To Go with the Meal:
Before or after reading the book, a teacher could have a child draw a picture of their favorite type of dog, encouraging the student to have some fun with the colors they choose. As the child draws, a teacher could encourage the child to narrate about a pet or dog they've seen. If the child's helped care for or clean a dog or other animal, they could talk about that. As a show and tell activity, kids could also bring in photos of their pets or their favorite animal to share with other students.

My Review: This was a cute and silly book for both boy and girl young readers. It does read more like a level 1 as the words and sentences are short and simple. It does have a fun storyline that will keep those just learning to read engaged in the book and wanting to read more. It also helps to teach a little about the work it takes to have a pet.
Cute early reader with lots of dog- and cat-related rhymes; it’s picture day at the dog park, and all of the dogs are getting groomed at the salon - until the cats sneak in through the pet door and cause a ruckus. Kids will enjoy the wordplay and the amusing pictures of the dogs’ elaborate hairstyles.
It's picture day for the dogs, so they are headed to the groomers. But when some cats get into the groomers chaos ensues. Will the pups ever be photo ready?
This is quite the humorous scenario. The illustrations just up that humor level. Kids should enjoy the story, rhyme, and illustrations and get a hoot out of reading this fairly easy book. Hand this to animal lovers and humor fans.
This is such a fun and easy read for a young child. The story and illustrations are hilarious and will make just about any 3 year old laugh. *I first found the book Vampoodle, then when I came across this one...I was hooked. So, if you like Shampoodle you will DEFINITELY like Vampoodle.
Simple words and rhyming text- dogs go to the groomer in chaos- get their hair done and look nice- leave again to chaos. I don't really like rhyming stories. But this one is really humorous. I like all their 'dos.
This is a fun beginning reading book about a pet groomers. A day in the life of making sure dogs and cats get baths. This is a true level to leader with more difficult word, but there is rhyming pattern and cadence that makes it fun and easy for kids to read.
This book is super cute! It's all about dirty dogs and how they get washed. It's rhyming which made it more fun to read to my son. My son loved all the picture of the dogs and what they did.
It's picture day at the park for a group of dogs, so they must go to the grooming salon first, Shampoodle. Once the kitties arrive, things begin to go a bit wild in the dog salon. Finally, all of the dogs are officially all picture ready and are heading out to the park, when they make their way through a muddy garden. The dogs are now all dirty and happy again ready for their picture.
This book was super cute, and I really liked the pages where each dog has a different style going on.
This would be a good book when teaching rhyming to kids because the story is rhythmic. I think they would enjoy it as well because it is humorous and most kids love dogs!
