Living as an orphan with a massive inheritance, two butt plugs, and a pet cactus for company is not just lonely. It’s boring. So, when I’m given the opportunity to test the latest prototype VR gaming console, how could I refuse? Immersing myself in the epic fantasy world, and with a furry companion at my side, I’m able to satiate my violent tendencies by battling dungeon bosses, crazy monsters and gaming noobs to my heart's content. No longer having to rely on my trusty butt plugs to keep me company, I’m graced with five hot as sin guardian warriors that I can rough house with, day and night. Of course, some evil entity always has to rear its ugly head and ruin everything. The question is, will I be able to contain my wrath when the secrets of this world are revealed, or will the whole world burn alongside me? ** Pixelnix is an action packed, fantasy RH romance suitable for readers aged 18+ and explores adult themes and content that some people may find upsetting. Contains foul language, sexual scenes and ends on a cliffhanger. **

I think this author could have a good story in this book if they could just rein it in - a lot. Clumsy and a little forgetful I can live with but this FMC was both mind numbingly stupid and then oddly proficient in turns. This book reads like the streaming consciousness of a person having a manic episode. Right down to the reckless behavior and hypersexuality.
Maybe stop it with all spastic-ness, and let us get to know these characters. A FMC can be quirky without being a dipshit.
There's also this thing that happens in some reverse harems, where each member of the harem gives the FMC a gagworthy nickname without any context and well before the point in a relationship where nicknames happen. It's cringey at best, and at worst, downright off-putting. Much as I liked Archie, I'll be damned if someone is calling me Flower. It makes it seem like they view her as weak and reads as very disrespectful. At least the names she gave them had some reasoning behind them. (I've seen books where a nickname happened somewhat organically and that is always a better option.)
I understand there is a disclaimer in the front that says something to the effect of -I'll write how I want and you'll just have to deal with it.- I sort of respect that, but I think it should be balanced with readability. It took me ages to finish because I got snagged on the sheer volume of errors. Errant apostrophes, incorrect words, to-too-two mistakes... I get the author isn't an English scholar, but if you want people to pay for a product, at least spend some time tidying it up. This just came off to me as the author saying they had no intention of using an editor or doing any editing theirself. Ask any other crafter if they can submit work for payment without at least a once-over looking for imperfections...
Overall, if this is the writing style we can expect from this author, I'll pass hereafter.
I couldn’t even wait for her to start the main game. The narration mixed with ramblings and no structure makes the reading a pain to progress. The main character is all over the place and doesn’t make sense. I play games and this is not a gamer girl - no woman that plays games will berates other women saying they are better, different, and manly (?!). We deal will too much misogyny to say this thing about other women. The trope that gamers are slobs and food junkies is so outdated.
Some excerpts to show the bizarre things this book has. Until the chapter where she becomes Xena, there was:
“they know that there is no way in hell that I could ever be compared to a normal, everyday woman. I am far too manly and slobby for that.”
“Clumsy mongoloid may be my default setting, but when it comes to gaming and technology, there is not an ounce of ditziness in sight.”
“buff is as useless as a fart in a space suit! It didn't even put a chip in his health bar”
“ Got nothing to come back with have ya, biatch?" Pointing two fingers at the duo, I give them the pew pews before exploding my hands on either side of my head. "Kaboooom, motherfuckers! Get gooonnee," and yes, I did the overexaggerated O and the tilty head thing too.”
I actually have no idea why I decided that getting a review copy from a book taking place in a game world was a good idea. I never play computer games. The only games I did play were Rollercoaster Tycoon and the Sims. In both cases I didn't care one bit about the actual game goals. I just wanted to build and design. I got myself the cheat codes for loads of money and I just built and designed. However, it sounded like a lot of fun and I wanted to give it a chance.
I think this book is an amazing book that really captures the atmosphere of all those RPG's. The book works with missions and levels and stashes and of course scores when it comes to health, hunger, energy and stuff like that. The only difference is that our heroine is not sitting at home with a controller in her hands. She's literally been brought into stasis (I have my doubts, but that's for the next books) and is experiencing the game as if she's truly there.
Since the book is basically about a character living in a computer game and trying to level up and get closer to the final fight, there is a lot of action in this book. There are missions, there are interactions with other characters in the game, although even our heroine realizes that they are really well advanced for NPC's, and we are constantly being reminded that this is a game and that here things are possible that are totally not possible at home.
However, this book is also a lot of fun if you're not a gamer but love fantasy worlds. We don't get that many answers in this book, but we do get a lot of hints and I think some truly amazing things are waiting in the next books! The only downside is that the book is clearly written for visualizers. I don't visualize my books, I don't see movies in my head. I therefore sometimes had a hard time keeping track of what was going on. But that's a me problem. Not a book problem.
DNF almost immediately. She’s “not like other girls” and can take on a group of 8 without getting hit. The writing is lazy and the main character is too annoying to continue. Thank but no thanks
I will admit I am not a gamer, far from it, but when I came across this book in my readers group I couldn't resist! I've yet to come across this kind of plot and was really interested in how it would be approached and what would happen. I am really glad I did as it is filled with laughable situations, badass scenes and steamy moments! With the anime and gamer references kinda going over my head I did find it difficult to fully get into it at the beginning. However, since I know I am not the desired reader for this I'm obviously not going to give up and hold it against May. So with a little help from the little mysterious hints that were sprinkled in, Macey being hilarious and my need to understand what was happening I persevered. Once Macey entered the game I really started getting into the book. The world building was fantastic and I loved that Macey (now Xena) was smart not just a badass. One of my biggest pet peeves is when the FMC immediately jumps into battle with no prior knowledge of the situation or the risk and they just get in the way or make things worse. So I absolutely want to kiss May for making Xena a SMART badass FMC that can hold her own, knows went to hold back and knows to do her research! Anyway, gamer or not, if you love a badass semi bonkers FMC, a cute but sassy familiar and all of the snarky, sweet, mysterious, overprotective alphahole MC's you could ask for then definitely give this book the chance it deserves! I am highly looking forward the second book in the series and future work from May!!
Think Deadpool, Xena, WoW, mixed with Stitchers. The FMC is hilarious and entertaining, interjecting wit into even the most serious circumstances and breaking the fourth wall repeatedly. It can be a little confusing and hard to follow, but well worth sticking with it. The game she plays reminds me of all the MMORPG games I’ve ever played rolled into one. Although the author lets nongamers in on different gaming terms and aspects you would need to know to understand the story, I think nongamers will have a difficult time immersing themselves in the book. There are quite a few puzzles going around and I’m interested to see where they lead. If you love video games or have ever wanted to read the storyline behind a video game - this is a must read! The action and steam are amazingly done, and the reference to Xena (one of my all time favorite tv shows) was very well received.
Macey was a huge gamer. When she gets an incredible opportunity and gets accepted into a program beyond her wildest dreams. Once she arrived, she was thrown into her own insane RPG world game. As a HUGE gamer myself, I read the blurb and I absolutely NEEDED to read this. I was soooo not disappointed. Macey/Xena was such a fun, spunky, and relatable character. My only thing was Macey seemed more like a teenager than adult. It was kind of unbelievable that she was an adult. But, the way she handles herself is completely admirable. Her guild were so yummy, I truly loved them so much. Gamer RPG RH's is my new favorite thing.
I swear this quote EVERY gamer has said once. "Just one game! One game never harmed anyone! Seriously? Be an adult for once in your life and go to bed at a normal time, woman." I HAVE SAID THAT SOOOO MANY TIMES 😂. This is such a uniquely, well thought out story. This had serious The Matrix meets WoW/Elder Scrolls/Elden Ring/Skyrim. I can't wait to start the next one!
I loved this book so much and i really wish i could give it way more than 5 stars. This was a pleasantly different take on RH books that ive read. Im not a gamer myself but it was brilliant seeing everything through Macey's (FMC) POV and her quirky and pervy internal monologues were priceless and extremely funny. For me the book picks up pace and action when Macey steps into the gaming world. Where she meets a whole host of interesting and hot characters. Their interactions were not only steamy but so funny too.
It was a cracking start to this series with one hell of a cliffhanger ending. Bring on book 2 now im dying to get my hands on it
I really wanted to like this one. I’m a big fan of gamer and isekai, so was looking forward to it. Xena was crazy, over the top and always thinking about sex. It was fun and then it was annoying. The guys took a while to show up and when they did, they tried to smother her and force her into the damsel in distress role. I did like the mind link and how close the guys were, but Xena overshadowed all of them and with the nicknames it got confusing who was who. The only two that were memorable was Damsel and Sparky. Not a lot stuck with this one. Unfortunately not a series I’ll be continuing.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Totally unexpected! It was not what I was thinking and I love it, it surprised me. Such an interesting FMC. I love Cena, the original and our FMC, both have some Wicked skills. Also I love Damsel! If I could I would take him with me, and Blade! Ok Kid too! Sparky... He still has to show me some more love, or figth! Ha! I love their relations betwen love and figthing, so hot! They are all great even our big guy. I still don't know what going on but I'm very interested in knowing more! Amazing.
Ok so this was the first time I have read a book about the gaming world. Story was actually really good. Story does end in a cliffhanger. Storyline was fantastic and I finished book in one night. I really want to know what happens next. Definitely a must read.
An epic gamer adventure in a backdrop I didn't expect. Such a refreshing RH with all the schmexy heat and to-die-for alpha-holes. Can't wait for book 2.
DNF- I wanted to like this so much! But I was lost from the very beginning. She really does endlessly ramble on. And her character doesn’t make any sense.
This was a very unique debut! I love the look into the gaming world. Macey (or Xena in the game) is a snarky, headstrong woman who knows what she wants and gives it her all. When she enters the game and finds her guys, she eventually figures out that they are keeping things from her, but she never loses her fighting spirit. She proves to herself and the rest of the world that she is no damsel in distress but a force to be reckoned with. It ends on a cliffy, so it leaves you wanting more. Looking forward to the next book!
I have over the last 18 months read over 750 books. I have a ton a ARC books I've been flying through. This right here, made me stop. How on earth, will all the reading and recommendations floating around BookTok and social media groups, has this not blown up? The concept of a video game world hasn't been done that I've ever read. And even if you take it as face value of a fantasy RH, that isn't quite right either. The world immersion of Xena basically breaking the 4th wall of the fantasy realm to monologue about how this is just a game, sends the mind reeling as you contemplate the depths this realm and world building could go. I won't lie. I'm not a gamer. It wasn't something that captivated me. But nonetheless, Luna May gives us enough information that the terms and excitement from Xena are understandable, although slightly clunky to remember at first if they are brand new to you. The idea of "Inventory" and "HUD", tonics, quests, Manna, Ki...I promise it does make sense. And in many ways, removes some of the suspension we must engage in for other fantasy books. The idea of spells, recharging, sharing power, and leveling up to clean the body, increase skills, and fight bad guys, are quick and dirty tricks to sidestep some of the issues normally plaguing the human realism aspect of fantasy books. I'm deeply intrigued by the whole story. The tastes of where this could be going have me hooked, and Luna May is phenomenal with the written word. She wields her pen (keyboard?) with as much skill and dexterity as Xena does her weapons.
I really enjoyed the humour and the main characters inner monologues while reading this book. This book had a lot of world building in it, laying out the start of the story. The cliffhanger at the end was a bit brutal and I’m looking forward to continuing the story in the second book.
I not one for reviews, but when it's warranted I will. This series warrants it! I love finding new authors to read, but to find one who is not long into their journey is special when the writing, world building, humour and spice speaks for itself. Never have I come across a gaming based RH never mind a romance, I got the mother load of jackpots with this! FMC is a sassy, spicy, awkward gamer who finds herself in a VR game and meets yummy men to game with as well as a few friends along the way. Intrigued? Go read to find out more as I'm not spoiling the fun for you! To say I want more is an understatement and will be following this author closely to snag whatever comes out asap.
Pixelnix: An Epic Video Game Reverse Harem Romance, and the first book in the Alt Drive Series by Luna May And was a fabulous journey and a gamers ultimate delight! Packed full of enough steamy spice, nonstop action and video game references galore, this book will be sure to please any RH loving, gamer geeks, fantasy loving heart for sure! Right from the start this book will pull you right in, leaving you both intrigued by the characters dynamics as well as laughing hysterically at the snarky wit behind May’s unique (and downright amazing!) writing!
Xena/Mace, our badass sassy, but also slightly klutzy FMC, finds herself given a virtual reality gaming opportunity that she can’t pass up—and boy does it change her life! As she quickly becomes immersed in this new world, she soon starts to make connections with fellow characters that totally sends her world spinning, and the question is—where exactly is she and did she become TOO attached?
This was a super fun and quick read that pulled me right in with May’s amazing world building as she really took the fantasy world of VR and mysterious quests up a notch with this book! I love the storyline and the diverse characters we get to “meet” and fall in love with and can’t wait to see more of this world. And while yes, Xena’s inner dialogue can be a bit too “much” at times I thought it added to her character perfectly and only made me like her even more for her authenticity. And her guys?!? Yes please!
Overall this is a fun must read for any video game lover that also loves a good RH story featuring a heroine without any filters and tons of hot “gamers” to keep her company. I can’t wait for more of this world and to see what’s in store for our cast of characters—because that cliffhanger ending?!? Perfection!!! But lucky for you, the second book is also out so happy reading! ;)
Rating this book was especially difficult for me because as much as I loved the plot, I found being in the FMC's head almost intolerable.
I will start with the positives. As a prevous WOW devotee, I truly enjoyed the gaming aspect of this novel. Additionally, I found that the author mixing in fantasy to be creative and fun. I also loved Kat.
Unfortunately, I did not connect with or enjoy any of the other characters especially Macey/Xena. Since I don't expect to get much in the way of character building with the MMCs in the first book of a series, I will focus on what didn't work for me regarding the FMC. I have read several books with the "quirky" girl as the main female and while most of the time it feels like a 'trying too hard' attempt to be funny ( much like the three stooges ) I have ended up enjoying those series and liking the main female. In regards to this story, I am sad to say, I never warmed up to Macey/Xena. She seems to be compassionate and can fight which are two aspects I love in a female main but she mostly reads as a very young teen or someone with a mental disability which gave the smexy thoughts and actions a level of ick I couldn't get past. From the lack of focus, constant falling, excess of inappropriate thoughts and actions she is the least smexy FMC I think I have ever read in a romance book.
I don't know if I will continue with the series but I do encorage other readers to give this one a try if you like gamer plots. Especially since most other reviewers didn't seem to find the FMC as off putting as I did.
Pixelnix sounded like a really interesting novel when I first picked it up. It has a lot of potential to be really good, but there are some down sides to it. Gamer world? Awesome! The FMC? A bit of a drawback. Her inner ramblings? I'm sorry, but that got a bit boring really quick and made progressing forward in the story a bit difficult. Which is a bad thing especially when the story kicks off with that. I wanted a lot less of that. I know that it's meant to make the character quirky and interesting in her own way, but it makes her annoying as readers have to slog through that and some of it is just downright ridiculous. Now! As the main character transitions from the real world to the gamer world, it's really interesting. I would have liked a bit more drama in that respect, but the deeper you go into the "game"/story the more interesting it gets. There are some delicious steamy scenes and I enjoyed the variety of characters the author gives me. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. For a debut novel this one is pretty good overall. I'm rating it 4 out of 5 stars.
This was an unusual story, definatley unlike anything I have read before and it gave me some Matrix/Avatar feels. Macey is a bit of a loner, having received a huge inheritance, she has become an excellent online gamer. She applies to become a tester for a new virtual game. It would definatley help if you are a gamer when reading this book, as you'll miss some things but it it'll not stop you from getting the overall gist of whats going on. Macey/Xena was a very unique character and to be honest I didn't like her at all throughout the whole book, although she was 28 she acted like a horny 13 year old boy, turning most things into something sexual. She was extremely clumsy and I'm not sure if this was suppose to come across as cute but it didn't for me. I mean, who looses an entire bikini when tripping over something? I liked her 'don't give a toss' attitude, she had no filter which was interesting but sometimes even that was too much for me. Luckily, there are lots of other characters and things going on. The world building was really good, lots of description. Macey/Xena basically becomes a charcter in the game, having to navigate the world, work out how to increase her levels by completing raids and side quests. As a big gamer, she manages this with ease. I would guess that if you play a lot of RPG then this would help. I liked the undercurrent that all wasnt as it seemed, and once she met her 'raid team' it was implied that there is much more going on that Macey/Xena is unaware of. Looking forward to the next book, and hoping that Macey/Xena gets her act together a bit more.
“Xena”, a gamer without many worries, hears about the new alt Drive and applies to join one of the testing teams hoping for a spot. Once she has completed the screening necessary, and immersed into the “game”, she finds some odd characters to keep her company, including a few men that send her emotions all over the place. As the story progresses her wishes are granted, the tables slanted, and as she acclimates to her new reality she will find she has bitten off more than she wanted. Luna May took virtual reality to the next level in Pixelnix. These characters quickly find holes in the reader's emotional armor and dig in for the long haul. This book does end in a cliffhanger, so if those aren't your thing you will want to wait for the second book in the series.
I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
What a interesting and also unique debut. I will admit I'm no gamer, but I loved the look we got into the gamer world. Macey (or Xena in the game) was crazy over the top and really didn't have no kind of filter. In some way I was here for it but at times it did get kinda of annoying still the book was full of adventure, romance and lots of laugh out loud moments to keep you hooked from beginning to end. Although that cliffhanger ending was something. Overall a good read hopefully we can get more POV from her harem. I'm dying to see more perspective from the guys and get properly into their heads and understand them more. Besides that can't wait for book 2 in the series. As always my reviews are totally voluntarily. No monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed is completely my own.
Pixelnix was a tough one for me, it definitely took me a while to get into it and a lot of the time I was losing track of who was who due to real names versus nicknames being used. There is a lot of information unpack in this story so if you aren't the type of reader to make notes as you read, I probably would just so you can keep up. There's a lot going on, and Xena/Macey's fast-paced mind can be a little difficult to keep up with.
The premise of the story reminds me of a mixture of The Matrix and Ready Player One with a whole load of steamy moments thrown in as well. Definitely an interesting start to a series, and I definitely want to read book 2 just cause I want to know whats going to happen next!
Holy he'll this was a really good book. That cliffhanger was also ILLEGAL!!! I have to know what happens. The plot is so good and the characters really grab you. Gotta say though, Xena/Mace not my favorite FMC because of all her inner monolog, but this is okay because she was also badass and the super klutz makes her totally relatable. Also. I need more of Ryzer!!!😍😍😍😍 I hope book 2 has more povs from the guys. While I adored the book, I would totally love to see more perspective from the guys to get properly into their heads and understand them perfectly. Thank you for giving me yet another plot I need to have the whole story of💪💪💪💪😭😭😭😭
On paper, this seemed like my ideal book. As a massive gamer nerd and lover of all things smutty, it should have been perfect.
However, it took me until I was about 70% in before I really felt any sort of connection to the story, unfortunately. The smut was good, great even in places, but there was something about it that just didn't work for me as a reader. I probably won't be reading the next one.
One of the good things about this, though, is that it is written in a way that even if you aren't a big gamer, you shouldn't have any issues understanding it!
An FMC that is full of sass, snarky, and witty comebacks, oh yea, and a complete klutz. Macey has been selected to trial run a VR game, but there is more to this than it seems. Under the name Xena as her character name, she meets a wide range of 'NPCs' and starts to form bonds. She has more questions than answers and with someone saying all will be reveled when the time is right is very frustrating.
This book keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting answers just as much as Xena. This is a RH fantasy romance where the leasing lady does not have to choose her partners. With medium spice level but slow on the relationship build, join Xena and her mysterious men on the epic adventure.
This was a new type of read for me. I do game a little and I enjoyed the way this was structured with a layering of very common features you find in those worlds on top of the steamy fantasies that I love to read. This one is spicy for sure. Macey/Xena is unafraid to say what she wants, knows how to thrive in male dominated spaces and is definitely a do first think about it later kind of gal. Action, spice and unique story telling. I’m glad I picked this up!
