Here’s an easy and amusing way to familiarise yourself with the names of the elements and maybe even discover something about the role they play in the modern world.

In these puzzles some of their names are hidden, but in a grid that disguises them under other words or phrases. When you’ve found all the elements you are looking for, then their initial letters may be arranged to spell another word, or they may exhibit some common feature. In either case this is explained on the answer page which follows each puzzle.

This book is also a collection of basic facts about the elements, two per puzzle page, and how we might encounter them in our everyday lives.

The author is award-winning science writer John Emsley whose popular books include Nature’s Building Blocks, Molecules at an Exhibition, and Molecules of Murder.
