5 Stars:
It is an intelligent and fast paced paranormal novel with some fun but quirky characters. The story line is fast-paced and can stand alone though references to the previous novel are referenced. I could feel right along with Garnet. It was easy too understand why she couldn’t let Daniel go, as much as she loved Sebastian. It’s also understandable the attraction with Gabriel being human with a Wicca connection.

Who will she truly wind up with????

My absolute favorite and will read again and again. I strongly recommend! It has outstanding qualities. The characters are wonderful and surprising and multi-dimensional. The writing is luring, engaging, and well-crafted enough to keep me interested from cover to cover and beyond. The plot is astonishing with twists and turns weaved into a well thought and planned story. There’s no pretense and romance was well balanced and done entirely correctly with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors and incredible, undeniable chemistry. Predictability is at an all-time low. With the exception of series based books that follow the same path but are just as good. Overall, Favorite, must read again, recommend!!!

This is the second book in the Garnet Lacey series & continues the story from a few months after the last book ended. Now that Garnet & Sebastian have managed to avoid the Vatican witch hunters life should be back to normal but that all changes when an FBI agent turns up at the store to question Garnet. He wants to question her about the murders of 6 Vatican witch hunters the year before. Garnet panics and realising that she is the prime suspect she tries to hide her identity. The fact that the FBI agent is psychic doesn't help so she takes matters into her own hands by creating a love spell that she hopes will get him to listen to her side of the story.

She is still dating Sebastian but her jealousy issues are causing problems just like they did with her ex Parrish - she doesn't want him to feed from her but hates the fact that he has to feed from others to survive. It doesn't help that she is keeping secrets from him - he has no idea that Lilith killed the 6 Vatican witch hunters or that Parrish is currently hiding out in her basement. Throw in the fact that Garnet is coming across zombies at every turn and things are bound to get interesting.

I really loved the first book in this series but while I still enjoyed Dead Sexy I don't think it quite lived up to my expectations. This story wasn't as fast paced as the previous one and I don't feel that there was as much comedy this time. If you liked the first book then you'll probably still enjoy this one - it was still a cut above some other books I've read but I'm hoping that the third book will be even better.

This was fun! I started with this and would love to read the first one and the next in the series. The author did a good job of catching me up on everything but I could still continue with the story without missing too much.

Very fun, unique, memorable characters. Great romance and even som fun flings that were understandable.

My only complaints were that some things were not for me. Sometimes the narrator mentions things like alpha or beta to describe her ex or current boyfriends and I thought that was really weird tbh and just couldn’t really understand or get into that.

Also some things struck me as…slightly racist, sexist, or homophobic. I mean the author TRIED to do research and I respect that. But I thought it was kind of weird that the narrator thought it was such a big deal to consider that her current boyfriend IN THE PAST BEFORE HE MET HER may have dated a man and been in a homosexual relationship. Like the idea of him being with a man and being bi or experimenting was gross to her, and then this vampire dude assures her that he is only straight. It just felt weirdly homophobic….like why would it gross her out that like a hundred years before she even existed that maybe he dated a dude?

But again I feel like the author tried which is better than most. And overall I do like it a lot and will continue with the book series and the author.

3.5 stars! These are really fun! Quick, cute, sexy lil reads but the story and everything that is going on is really starting to get bigger and bigger!

Ummmm excuse me! That ending?! Huh?! What is happening?! Oh gosh! And, maybe more importantly, will Garnet ever truly make up her mind about who she truly wants?!

I do not dislike this series. But I don't adore it. Still, it has its fun moments, its sexy interludes, and many interesting ideas at its foundation.

This time around Garnet must deal with the FBI breathing down her neck, while following a querulous crow around town and coping with Sebastian's jealousy of Parrish. It's never a dull moment for this Wiccan.

There are laughs to be had and bittersweet moments to treasure, but Hallaway's characters still don't feel fully realized to me. Something about the men in Garnet's life strikes me as derived from a template. While both are attractive, Parrish is a bit more real than Sebastian, even though the latter is her present boyfriend.

The FBI agent provides some interesting interactions and prompts Garnet to come to terms with the death of her coven. The zombie plot and the crow messenger, while intriguing, seem secondary to everything else going on and the resolution is anti-climactic.

I'm unsure how I feel about the Goddess Lillith residing in Garnet. Most often, her only involvement is in making Garnet's tummy rumble. Her powers are under-used to the point that she really serves no purpose outside of providing brief bursts of strength.

Overall, this book is a very chick-lit brand of UF, and yet Garnet is not a chick-lit kind of girl. That dichotomy, paired with the lack of truly thrilling moments, keeps me from loving the series. But it's not a bad way to laze away a rainy afternoon.

Magic is not for the gutless. And I, Garnet Lacey, have become a seriously powerful witch.
Let’s just hope I can stomach what’s coming...I should’ve known I’d never get away with murder.

Especially when the people I accidentally unleashed the dark Goddess Lilith on were Vatican witch hunters. Besides, I’ve had other things to worry about. I really don’t want my vampire boyfriend to find out my vampire ex is stowing his coffin in my basement...

Meanwhile, pesky frat boy zombies are popping up everywhere, even at Mercury Crossing, the occult bookstore I manage. And if that weren’t enough, I’ve got a gorgeous FBI agent hot on my trail. What to do?

A teensy little love spell might encourage cute FBI guy to listen to my side of the story, and I could break it any time...right?

Between love spells gone wrong and sharing my body with the Goddess Lilith, a plea of innocence won’t be so easy to conjure up...

I really want to like this series, but Garnet is making it difficult. What a bunch of stupid decisions she made.

What I enjoyed:
* Sebastian. Still not sure why he loves Garnet though.
* Benjamin, the attack ghost.
* Barney, the cat who is allergic to magic.
* Dominguez. Basically the guys are great and the women aren't.

What could have been better:
* Garnet. Seriously, who in their right mind thinks it's a good idea to put a love charm on the FBI agent who is investigating you? Especially when you already have a jealous boyfriend and an ex-boyfriend hanging around.
* Izzy.

‘Dead Sexy’ is the follow up to ‘Tall, Dark and Dead’, Tate Hallaway’s excellent first novel which introduced us to Garnet Lacey, witch, her friends, enemies and co-workers.

Garnet’s guilty secret is that she murdered six Vatican witch hunters one Halloween night. As she was possessed by a Goddess called Lilith at the time it wasn’t entirely her fault but she fled to Madison, Wisconsin and changed her appearance, just to be safe.
So when Special Agent Dominguez, a tall, handsome, psychic FBI officer comes into her magic shop looking for a suspect she’s worried. When he shows her a picture of herself as she used to look she’s even more worried. Shortly after that the zombies show up.

Garnet is helped through her troubles by her current vampire boyfriend Sebastian Von Traum and by her ex-boyfriend Parrish, who is also a vampire. She has the Goddess Lilith inside her too, ready to be released if things get rough. All in all, she’s pretty safe.

Too safe actually. Having Lilith makes Garnet a bit like Kwai Chang Caine in the old Kung-Fu television series. No matter how much he suffered at the hands of rough cowboys the viewer always knew he was secretly death on legs and would sort them all out in the end. Your only worry was for the Quakers, Sodbusters, Mormons or whatever non-violent minority he had befriended that week. Garnet, likewise, is never in any real danger but has to keep her friends safe.

I thought having Garnet cast a love spell on the FBI man was a mistake. It helped keep the story moving along but it was not really in character. The first book reminded me, in a minor way, of Raymond Chandler. This one made me think of a letter he once wrote to his publisher assuring them that his new book was brilliant but something had gone wrong with the plot. Chandler’s writing was engaging enough to overcome this flaw.

So is Tate Hallaway’s, just about. Garnet still has a fetching narrative voice but I found this one a bit of a disappointment after her excellent debut. It wasn’t exactly lacklustre but it lacked the lustre of ‘Tall, Dark and Dead.’ Hallaway has all the ingredients here for a successful series: good characters, a funky heroine and a well crafted modern fantasy setting in small town America. I hope she keeps going with it.

This here book is a bit of a blip but only compared to the first one. Taken on its own merits it’s not at all bad and still worth reading.

Never hated a main character more.
She isn't just enormously stupid, she's also flighty, unfaithful, and the worlds biggest hypocrite.

Her boyfriend rightfully calls her on her shit. But instead of her acknowledging her faults, changing and growing, she just feels like SHE'S been wronged, and instead of changing her behavior, she is ten times worse, and not only lusts, but makes out with to different men. (While complaining like a child that he has to take blood from others to SURVIVE.) Which he wouldn't need to do, unless you denied him yours. He dies without it, what's the problem here?

In the end he just takes her back, and tells her he loves her (why?) There's nothing lovable about this stupid, selfish, unfaithful wench! So she doesn't learn, doesn't grow, gets away with her awful behaviour, and is rewarded for it. I Cant stand it! I hope she's eaten by a zombie. Slowly and painfully.

I wouldn't be this angry if she overall was a bad writer. She isn't, which is the saddest part. This could've been pretty good, but she completely ruins it with a godawful main character.

Sure the story is shallow, not well thought out, there's major laps in logic, and there's too much detail. You're basically drowning in descriptions.

But tho basic writing skills are there. She just needs a coach and a better editor or something. She just wastes all that potential, and it makes me fuming!

And did I mention that the main character is STUPID BEYOND BELIEF. 95% of her problems, are because of her own idiotic actions. The worst of all happens in the beginning.

An FBI-agent comes looking for her to answer for a crime, but doesn't recognize her. He shows her a picture, asks "do you know this person?"

Instead of answering "no" like a rational person, she says "she works here."
WHAT THE EVERLOVING FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!

And to makes matters worse, she then casts a lovespell on him, and makes out with him. Hello, you have a boyfriend who loves you, who just yesterday called you out on your previously unfaithful and deceptive behaviour?!?!

Just die, you horrid horrid harpie.
And please give the author some writing lessons. She has the potential to be SO much better. Sadly.
I'm done.

So this book ticked nearly every box on my fluffy paranormal romp indulgence list: hot gentlemanly vampires, magic, occult shop, hipster coffeehouse, sassy pet cat, and a main character who takes the paranormal zaniness in her life in stride.

I thought Garnet was a pretty solid and fun protagonist. As a practicing Witch who shares her body with a powerful Goddess, she is no stranger to all things magical, and has a sense of humor about it all that I enjoyed. At the same time, she's got pretty modest goals; she's just a gal trying to run her shop, sort out her relationships, make sure her cat gets fed, and avoid going to jail for something she sort of didn't do. Compared to similar books with similar heroines, I liked that Garnet:

1) Doesn't navel-gaze. I get annoyed when the protagonist spends too much time complaining about or insisting on their mundaneness, especially when everything that happens to them is to the contrary. Some might wonder why so many washboard-abbed men are attracted to her, but hey, if she doesn't question it, then neither will I.

2) Makes decisions. They're not always good ones, but for the most part, she is the driver of the story and her own life. She knows what she is and isn't capable of, so when her friends or lovers come to the rescue, it feels right instead of convenient.

Things that could have been improved:
- Neither of the "crises" (the FBI agent and the zombies) ever feel truly urgent or like a real threat.
- Too much narrative/interior monologue between lines of dialogue. There were a few times when I had to go back to remember what the last line in the conversation was.
- Better use of Sebastian. He goes from calling Garnet on her s___ to supporting her unconditionally while she works out the situation with her ex. I like that he did both of these things, but I would really like to know what he was thinking through that change of heart.

Looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Dead Sexy was an interesting read, but I say that with an air of uncertainty. The adventures of Garnet Lacey were entertaining. I would even say they were insane in a cute way. But, it wasn't the character build or events that kept me hooked. I'm not one to check publication dates so I was oblivious to the fact that this story comes from the early 2000s. The time of flip phones and spiky hair styles. The time when hot vampires had longer hair and only roamed at night. The time when witches were popular and powerful. The details in the story capture the vibe of what was the early 2000s in a manner that grabs you by the hand and shares its familiarity. I couldn't help but to appreciate this book. While I was not a fan for the rushed experiences and random oddities that popped up, the ease of envisioning being a part of the time appealed to me. It's what kept me reading to the end.

Not nearly as intriguing as the first book. The MC spent too much time waking up and wondering what happened. Also, I found it (personally) difficult how much time she spent being 'in love' with her boyfriend while also lusting after and dabbling with her ex and another character. Unless she was polyamorous, it seemed inappropriate. And her boyfriend's long-suffering attitude was also unrealistic.

But, I find this world intriguing and I love a lot of the characters. I'll definitely read book 3 and then decide if it's worth continuing.

Quick read. Reminds me of the Sookie Stackhouse books, but without the southern gothic feel. Less like urban fantasy and more like chick lit with a dash of witch, a pinch of vampire, and a sprinkle of zombie.

Garnet Lacey may have duped the Vatican hunters… but now a new threat - the FBI is on her doorstep, trying to solve the case of 6 dead priests…

And this is the continuing love story between Garnet and Sebastian… He knows/feels that she still holds strong feelings for Parrish… and puts them on a ‘time out’… although he assures her that he loves her… but then every time she gets into trouble, he’s right there to bail her out… Her feelings for Parrish are mixed between her attraction for him, for his help on the worst day of her life, and the love he has for her…

Her 1st attempt to fix the FBI problem is to put a love spell on him, so that he’ll be compelled to go easy on her… it backfires when she is just as ‘overcome’ as he is, and so she breaks the spell… with the help of Lilith, and as he is psychic (just learning to accept it), he sees the truth of the situation, and when Parrish offers an alternative, he takes it up… and the story ends with his declaration that Garnet has an FBI friend.

And her workmate, William, is under the thrall of a sorceress who is raising ghouls for the money/jewels that they had buried with them… so Garnet and Sebastian (both with parts of Lilith) exorcise the loa that inhabits him…

A tender scene with Parrish… she is injured (shot by the FBI guy) and slowly healing… Parrish offers her some of his blood to heal her… ad he gives it to her gently, lovingly, by cutting his own lip, and kissing her, until she takes enough blood. And Parrish allows the FBI to shoot him … and Garnet throws a wake… and grieves a little for the end of their relationship (kindof)… and Sebastian is easier with things… and they end right, together… having worked as a team to reclaim Parrish and throw the wake… and she is finally able to confide to him the whole story of the night the hunters came and killed her friends.

This is the follow-up to Tall Dark and Dead, and as with the previous book in the series, Dead Sexy is about magic shop owner Garnet, who has an uncomfortable relationship with the goddess Lilith - said goddess inhabits Garnet's body and has a nasty tendency to take over at times, the most important of these being at the beginning of Tall, Dark and Dead when a group of Vatican-sponsored assassins had killed the rest of her coven.

This time around, Garnet is still trying to deal with the aftermath of her friends' murder and her own gory involvement in the death of those agents, while juggling a relationship with the sexy Sebastian and her ex-boyfriend Parrish. The latter is, of course, complicated by the fact that both Sebastian and Parrish are vampires, although Sebastian can handily go about in daylight regardless. Life becomes even more complicated when an FBI agent tracks Garnet down, wanting to know about what happened to her coven.

Again, as with the previous volume, I enjoyed Dead Sexy and Garnet herself makes an engaging protagonist. I'm not sure it was quite as good as the first book, but it was still entertaining enough to make me want to pick up the next in the series, which is Romancing the Dead.
