Valmiki s Ramayana was originally written in Sanskrit. The verse came about when the Sage Valmiki cursed the hunter who killed a bird, but in turn the curse brought about the Ramayana.
Valmiki s Ramayana is known as the Adikavya as it is believed to be the first poem written in Sanskrit. It is said that Lord Brahma had promised Valmiki that as long as the mountains stand and the rivers flow, the Ramayana will be read by man for generations to come. The Ramayana consists of 24,000 verses, all of which sing the praises of the great Lord Rama and his search for truth. In the verses, Rama is described as an avatar of Vishnu, however, Valmiki does not call him a God.
Anant Pai popularly known as Uncle Pai, was an Indian educationalist and creator of Indian comics, in particular the Amar Chitra Katha series in 1967, along with the India Book House publishers, and which retold traditional Indian folk tales, mythological stories, and biographies of historical characters. In 1980, he launched Tinkle, a children's anthology, which was started under Rang Rekha Features, India's first comic and cartoon syndicate, that lasted till 1998, with him as the Managing Director.
Today, Amar Chitra Katha sells about three million comic books a year, in English and more than 20 Indian languages, and has sold about 100 million copies since it inception in 1967 by Anant Pai, and in 2007 was taken over by ACK Media.
The key to reading the epics is your ability to find the correct versions suitable for your age. Even if you are an adult and you were able to pick the correct version of these epics suitable for you and are still struggling to read them, I suggest you go for these books as they will equip you to read any epic cover-to-cover with a deeper understanding.
Valmiki's Ramayana by Amar Chitra Katha will be an excellent option if you are new to the epic Ramayana.
one of my hobbies is reading about different nations’ mythological stories; persian, greek, roman and so on are a few of them. one of the live mythologies of the world is the indian’s. by live i mean people still “believe” in it. the stories are not just stories, they’re facts around which people live, and the heroes are their role models. stories are firmly rooted in people’s cultural heritage and in a way it is fair to say that it defines their way of living.
anyway, i was recently introduced to amar chitra katha’s by one of my coworkers. his family is originally from india, but he was born and raised overseas. according to him these books are his only way of learning about his indian culture and religious background. kids usually like comic books and to teach stuffs to a kid using comic books is very effective, as he/she is reading the text while looking at pictures, which helps more toward conveying the idea.
created by anant pai, amar chitra katha is one of the largest comic books series in india. as far as i know the books are all about real mythological vedic stories, epic and fables. i found two of them, “krishna” and “ramayana” and read them as soon as i got them. the stories are very well written, very simple and easy to understand, and faithful to the source. krishna is a hindu deity and an avatar of vishnu, the supreme god. i know krishna from bhagavad gita, one of the best books i’ve ever read (i haven’t finished it yet). ramayana is an indian epic ascribed to valmiki, a hindu sage. ramayana together with mahabharata are two of the greatest indian epics. it is the story of rama another avatar of the vishnu, and a king of ayodhya.
This was a modern comic book rendition of the ancient Indian classic. The story, something of a cross between soap opera and fable, is a beautiful one that celebrates virtue, especially that of keeping one's word and honoring agreements. Being a comic book it was obviously a quick, easy read but it does introduce the story lines of Rama and Sita and even some of the ancient history and geography of Hindi India.
This is a very concise version of the Ramayana. Highly recommended for Children and those who want to get a gist of it. It is commendable how such a huge epic could be shortened to a 95 page comic.
While I was ready to accept some exclusions and elisions, there were two or three things I found problematic about this rendition of Valmiki's Ramayana: 1. The fact that there is no mention of Rama's treacherous murder of King Vali, which has always been one of the most interesting episodes in the epic for me. 2. Sita's plight after being rejected by Rama, as well as Rama's own dilemmas about this, are hardly mentioned at all. 3. There is no reference to Sita's second ordeal and sacrifice. 4. Except for Ravana and an unnamed Rakshasa, all other Rakshasas are depicted as having darker skin than everyone else, a distinction that owes more to British and post-colonial fantasies about race than to color descriptions in the epic itself.
The thing that make me dislike this book is, there were many false stories and named as VALMIKI'S RAMAYANA ???
I would have given it 5 stars, if there were true stories or even if it's name would be only RAMAYANA. I personally have a RAMAYANA book at home. Both in a story for kids form and VALMIKI RAMAYANA. VAILMIKI RAMAYANA is long, every single detail is given in it, small to small. And why did Dasrath's dearest son have gone to excile, who will tell about the curse that is mentioned in VALMIKI RAMAYANA???? Who will mention that Lanka was made up of Gold, etc.???
Oh, man. Serious nostalgia, great moral adventure stories that will appeal to your kids, whatever their religious background. If you take all the religious stuff out of it, that is.
I suspect this did rather more to sway me towards non-belief than almost anything else.
Rewriting effectively the epic in very limited words that can be understood and remembered by the children, is really commendable. Not only the children but people of all ages have enjoyed reading this comic book and got inspired. The illustrations too are very good. 😊
Excellent story telling with complete facts and correct details. Also, additional informative notes are very useful. Amar Chitra Katha is the best publication house for ancient and cultural literature with pictorial arts.
Although I know about Ramayan, its always pleasure to read or watch it again and again. This book as well, with beautiful images, doesn't fail to impress. This is one best book I read this year. Short and sweet.
The Ramayana has a special place in my heart from watching Sita Sings the Blues as kid. This version felt neutral or relaxed in comparison to that, and that’s not a bad thing at all. It’s well transcribed and illustrated and it will continue to stand the test of time
I picked this up as a souvenir from my India travels and WOW what a brilliant read! This epic blew me away and came to life with THE most beautiful illustrations. Highly recommend if you’re new to Indian mythology like I am!
