I randomly stumbled across this book when browsing around in a bookstore and was intrigued after turning it to a random page and reading a letter.
Letters, let alone love letters, are not something I have much experience with, but I must admit I have discovered an appreciation for them. I have always felt as though letters are too personal to be read by anyone other than the intended receiver, and perhaps they are. After all, they likely were not written with the intention of being published in a book years later. Regardless, they are a joy to read.
This book is a compilation of love letters to and from great men, most of them from, and they are interestingly sad to read.
Never before have I thought about the difference context makes to the experience of reading a letter, say, reading a letter from Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn is utterly heartbreaking when you know their story but is rather pretty when you do not. The same goes for most things, I believe. This collection of letters provides heartbreak and grand love, even the two combined, as faith will often have it.
If you don't wish to read the entire collection of letters, even though I recommend that you do, my personal favorites are the letters written by John Keats and Lord Byron—specifically, Lord Byron's letters to Caroline Lamb. They are beautiful, unique, and quite sad.
Love letters were always something to look forward to in my young school days. All folded up and handwritten with misspelled words. The giggling, the warm feeling in your body and heart beating fast. Love letters are classic and written with the true feelings from the heart. Read this with a few memories and sighs of joy.
I bought this book a while back , after rewatching sex and the city for the nth time . Back then, I wanted to read some saucy letters but after reading few pages , I didn’t really find any . So I put it away .
I stumbled upon the book a few weeks ago and decided to give it another go. I read it here and there and on some night such as this found some letters and beautiful poems which I had to read and reread.
I absolutely loved it ~ beautiful love letters , men who were in touch with their emotions and expressed them so openly.
Letters from women to their lovers , husbands , fiancés unrequited loves
Sigh ~ favorite quotes “we must live our lives to the full, Our loves, our sorrow…! “
“When you love you should not say , ‘God is in my heart’ but rather ‘I am the heart of God.
Men who are in touch with their emotions and are not afraid to show love and affection >>>>>>>>
There was heartbreak, longing, hope, ecstasy, flames of lust and the rain of sorrow, stars and kisses, heaven and hell. There was emotion and passion, burning love for the men's wives and mistresses. It made me smile like a goof thinking about how in love these men were and how they were not afraid to show the different shades of love even though some of these were not the most admirable. Love truly is everything; happiest are those who have the courage to show it.
The letters are beautiful and moving. The formatting of this book, on the other hand, is appalling. I would recommend the Kirkland anthology over this one. There are conflicting dates. There are no snippets of information to give context to each letter. Lots of blank, empty pages. Surprised this was published like this!
I began this book a long time ago, reading the letters sporadically and I finished on Valentine's Day 2015. I love things like this. I don't know how common love letters are in this day and age, my bet is on them being not very common. I found it beautiful and terribly romantic to read and perfect for the day I finished it.
