He joined the Public Administration in 1973 , aged 14.
In November 1981 he began to study the formation of agents of the Judicial Police, and took office in 1982 as Agent. In 1997/1998 he attended the course of sub-inspectors of the PJ, being ranked first among 100 students. In 2000/2001 completed the course coordinators of PJ. He served in Lisbon, the Algarve and the Azores. Chased for years, effectively, all sorts of violent and organized crime: theft, robbery, murder, drug trafficking. Had an unblemished career, widely recognized by colleagues and superiors, as well as judges and prosecutors, judicial officials and lawyers, with whom he had the pleasure of dealing for many years.
Its maxim that "justice is done in silence." Operational Coordinator of the research was the "Maddie case", between 3 May and 2 October 2007, having then been removed from the investigation, an act unprecedented in the history of the Judicial Police.
He retired on July 1, 2008, after 27 years of police career in order to restore the fullness of his freedom of expression on the case investigated and to contribute, as far as possible, to the discovery of material truth and realization of justice. It is considered one Beira by birth, by migration and Lisbon Algarve for adoption. He is married in second marriage and has three daughters.

Just wow.
A friend recently put me onto a facebook page that is... I won't call it 'anti-McCann' but shall we call it 'McCann curious', perhaps? One that doesn't swallow their story hook line and sinker, anyway. On that page I came across a link for an English Translation of this story, for which I am infinitely grateful for, because I read this in one sitting, in one evening, on my phone.
The book itself - it's not a story. It's important to remember that, because for the first few chapters, I found myself finding the 'storytelling' a little lacklustre. But when I remembered - this isn't fiction, there isn't another way to write it, this is how it happened - I soon became completely immersed in the controversy, innacuracies and almost 'conspiracy theory' of this whole unfortunate tale.
Definitely worth a read to counter-balance Kate McScam (er sorry, McCann)'s book; I know I will be doing the same in reverse. Perhaps I'm biased from reading this one first, but I was always suspicious of the McCanns, and this just adds fuel to the fire.
I've made my mind up what happened. I hope this book will give others a chance to make theirs up too.
Oh, I will also be purchasing a copy of this as soon as it becomes available in the UK to support the author. I'd recommend others do the same.

The McCanns had this book banned, but the decision was appealed. They've threatened legal action on anyone who sells it in the U.K - so naturally I wanted to read it.

Gonçalo Amaral is the ex-police officer who led the hunt for Madeleine in Portugal in 2007. He wrote this book in 2008 after taking early retirement due to the case.
Reading this, it's easy to see why the McCanns want it banned. They don't come off well in it, and it would definitely impact on public opinion in the UK. It pretty much blows the abduction theory to bits.
It's not sensationalist, it's full of short, precise chapters with facts and results laid out. To listen to UK media at the time, the Portugese police came off as bumbling nitwits who didn't have a clue what they were doing. The opposite is true - they explored every available avenue, they searched, they brought in specialists from overseas, they made use of a top forensic dog team, they monitored suspects and requested information - much of which was denied by British authorities. Credit card records (the McCanns didn't have any, apparently), medical records.
Have you ever encountered a pair of doctors who don't have credit or debit cards? Or a suspect who brings a press officer to a questioning session then proceeds to start texting? How does one of the world's top cadaver dogs get the scent of a corpse off a child's cuddly toy? And how is that dismissed? (FYI, the absence of a body meant that the information supplied by the dog team was unusable). Blood in the boot of a car, a 50% match for Gerry McCann (meaning it belonged to one of his children) dismissed as "blood that leaked from meat while shopping". The evidence of the group of friends is completely contradictory. Staff members say Gerry was missing for more than 30 minutes, giving him time to be spotted by the Irish family who say they saw him carry a limp child dressed in pyjamas.
I don't know what happened to Madeleine - but I believe the McCanns do. It's very hard to find sympathy for people who bring their young children on holiday and then spend little time with them - the children spent the majority of their time in Daycare. Then they were left alone while the parents enjoyed a meal out (every night, not just this one. And every child, not just the McCanns).
One has to wonder about the influence and power of people - if this is a cover-up, there's an incredibly dedicated, loyal team at the core of it. I would only hope that over time, that conscience will get the better of one of them and that the truth will be revealed - but I somehow doubt it. It is now almost a decade since Madeleine disappeared - someone knows what happened.

O livro de Gonçalo Amaral, cujo lançamento foi na passada sexta-feira, dia 25, promete ser polémico pelas questões que coloca. Já o li, e deixo aqui a minha impressão.
Confesso que nada do que está escrito no livro me surpreende, mas talvez isso se deva ao facto de nunca ter sido convencida pelos pais da criança. Desde o início que a tese de rapto não me convence, assim como não me convence uma mãe que num curto período de férias, num país estrangeiro, prefere deixar os seus filhos numa creche enquanto corre pela praia ou joga ténis, mas que após o desaparecimento de um deles faz questão de andar agarrada ao seu boneco preferido.
Muitos foram aqueles que me chamaram de fria, por não me comover com as lágrimas ou "esforços" desenvolvidos pelo casal McCann, na busca da sua filha desaparecida. Muitos são aqueles que, agora, sentem os seus sentimentos usados.
Surpreendida fiquei, com o movimento cívico que se gerou em redor deste acontecimento. Tantas crianças desaparecidas em Portugal e nunca se tinha assistido a uma mobilização como aquela que este caso gerou. Ingleses houve, que se despediram dos seus empregos e vieram para Portugal, em busca da criança desaparecida. Os portugueses choraram e sentiram a perda daquela criança como se sua fosse.
Na realidade, este caso prova, que com jeito e saber, a comunicação social consegue mesmo mover massas. Aliás, um dos grandes problemas desta investigação foi mesmo a comunicação social, paralelamente às pressões políticas (que não afirmo existirem, mas acredito que sim!). A comunicação social contaminou toda a investigação, não permitindo à PJ algumas diligências importantes. É claro que perguntamos: " Mas a Polícia Judiciária anda a mandado da comunicação social? Não foram feitas diligências importantes por causa da comunicação social?". Por muito que nos custe aceitar, essa é a realidade, pois existem procedimentos forenses que fazem sentido desde que existam condições para tal. Alguns dos procedimentos poderiam indiciar suspeitas que não deveriam ser do conhecimento alheio, mas apenas dos envolvidos na investigação: polícias, investigadores e suspeitos. Mas todos nós sabemos que os repórteres na altura, até seriam capazes de se disfarçar de pedras da calçada para conseguirem uma imagem desfocada de qualquer coisa que depois seria comentada da forma mais mediática possível, de preferência com um directo, nem que este tivesse apenas como fundo uma porta fechada.
Não estou aqui a condenar a comunicação social pelo espectáculo criado; se culpados há, não seram com certeza os repórteres a quem acenaram com uma mina de notícias. Apenas considero que se deveria ter tido bom senso, parar e pensar . Pensar que muita coisa poderia estar em jogo, que se estava no seio de uma investigação criminal, que uma criança tinha desaparecido sem deixar rasto, que era importante deixar quem sabe apurar a verdade... Teria sido importante refrear os ânimos, pensar com a cabeça e não com o coração. Em casos como este devemos ser racionais e não emotivos, tais como foram aqueles que fizeram desaparecer a criança.
Em relação ao livro, gostei da forma como está escrito: relata a investigação, as suas dificuldades, as dúvidas surgidas e as perguntas que ficaram sem resposta. Ficamos a conhecer as contradições, as pistas, os testemunhos, os resultados a que chegou a equipa de investigação que me parece ter sido incómoda para alguns. Os resultados foram os seguintes:
" A menor Madeleine McCann morreu no apartamento 5A do Ocean Club, da Vila da Luz, na noite de 3 de Maio de 2007;
Ocorreu uma simulação de rapto;
Kate Healy e Gerald McCann são suspeitos de envolvimento na acultação do cadáver da sua filha;
A morte poderá ter sobrevindo em resultado de um trágico acidente;
Existem indícios de negligência na guarda e segurança dos filhos."
Incómodo foi também o Coordenador Operacional da investigação, afastado da mesma a 2 de Outubro de 2007. Porquê? Porque pessoas de convicções tornam-se incómodas quando "valores" mais altos se fazem ouvir.
Parafraseando Gonçalo Amaral: "Uma investigação criminal apenas se compromete com a busca da verdade material. Não se deve preocupar com o politicamente correcto".
Fiquei com a sensação de que Gonçalo Amaral não escreve tudo o que sabe, mas o que escreve é suficiente. E por vezes não devemos ir além do suficiente...

This is a must read for everybody, very interesting to read a book written in the style, like a police report. Very informative, cannot understand why this book would be banned, but then I don't understand anything the McCanns do, the story sadly reminds me of 'Small Sacrifices' by Ann Rule and hopefully this book along with the documentary will bring the truth forward. This book in no way bashes on the family, it is simply a man doing his job no matter how difficult people make it for him.

Very clear and fluent account of what the author thinks really happened to Maddie McCann. What can I say? He convinced me. But most importantly, the intense sadness of it all really got to me again.

The reason I am giving this book 5 stars is due to the strength and perseverance of Gonçalo Amaral to get his story and point of view out there on the Madeline McCann case, despite the repercussions to him and his family. I have believed it was the fault of the parents from the start and this just proves it for me! Shame it is now a banned book.

Como qualquer outro português, acompanhei este caso com atenção, desde o início discreto até ao circo mediático que todos conhecemos.
O desaparecimento de Madeleine McCann, em solo algarvio, fez logo alarido em todo o país. Os problemas começam logo na questão dos filhos estarem sozinhos enquanto os pais estão tranquilamente a jantar: desculpem lá, havendo diferenças culturais ou não, não acho normal deixar crianças com aquela idade sozinhas. A técnica inventada pelos pais, com as rondas, para dar uma falsa sensação de segurança não convence ninguém. Especialmente porque todos dão depoimentos contraditórios e ninguém se entende. Se o sistema é fiável, porque não dizem todos a mesma coisa? Suspeito.
Depois temos o problema do casal com as autoridades portuguesas: desde o início que foram inflexíveis, revelando desconfiança enquanto atiravam para cima da mesa a teoria do rapto. Entre esta teoria e a falta de informação revelada pelos britânicos, o caso tornava-se num mistério sem fim. Infelizmente, continuamos sem saber o que aconteceu.
O livro de Gonçalo Amaral mostra-nos os dados que foram convenientemente ocultados, por motivos que todos desconhecemos. Ao contrário do documentário da netflix, que dá uma péssima imagem das autoridades portuguesa e iliba os pais de qualquer acusação, este livro dá-nos a possibilidade de estudar outras hipóteses que sempre foram descartadas.
A minha opinião é a mesma desde o início: acidental ou não, os pais estão envolvidos na morte desta criança.

If I give this book a high rating that's not of course for literary merit which it never pretended to have even though written with admirable conciseness and straightforwardness (originally in a Portuguese idiom which may not always translate quite as it should into English). Rather, its importance lies in it being a readable transcription from the voluminous files of the first and indeed only thorough police investigation into this highly mysterious and perplexing case, perhaps one of the strangest and famous - or infamous - in the annals of crime. That it has been vilified, temporarily removed from the shelves of Portuguese bookshops, still after seven years banned completely in the UK, and the author hounded apparently according to the instructions or demands of the chief suspects is enough, I believe, to confirm its veracity

Ja que este livro foi absolvido quis realmente saber pelo inspetor responsavel pela investigacao o que se terá passado: aqui está descrito o que mais que presumivelmente terá acontecido à pequena Maddie... Adoraria que esta verdade fosse admitida pelos pais da menina.. Não somos um país de 3o mundo, temos bons profissionais de investigação.

Echt tragisch en frustrerend om te lezen hoe door een samenhang van omstandigheden de mensen verantwoordelijk nog steeds vrij rondlopen en we hoogstwaarschijnlijk nooit zullen weten waarom/hoe Madeleine precies gestorven is (overdosis medicatie, een domme val, ..).

I don���t believe in banning books, unless they are written from a criminal wanting to profit from his crime, as such I was shocked to find out that Goncalo Amaral���s book, Maddie: The Truth of the Lie, written by an investigator who worked on the case, had been banned following a law suit by the missing child���s parents. As of October 2010, that ban has been lifted (see here) but the book still has not been published in English. As a follower of True Crime accounts, and having reviewed two previous works, mainly focussed on the abduction theory of Madeleine���s disappearance, I decided to read and review Amaral���s account of the investigation, which whilst following the various hypothesis that his team came up with during the investigation, settles on the hypothesis that Madeleine was accidentally killed in the apartment.
The book is written in such a way that you truly feel that you are following the developments of the investigation, only occasionally jarred out of this by a retrospective comment. You feel both the excitement and frustrations of the team at critical points in the investigation. It is also the only book on the topic in which I have found significant information on the case that I was previously unaware of, such as the positive identification by the Smith family of Ireland of Gerry McCann as the man seen carrying a small child through the streets on the night Madeline disappeared, and information held by British police suggesting one of the McCann���s friends and fellow holiday maker, had made inappropriate comments about Madeline prior to her disappearance. Amaral also addresses, indirectly, some of the questions and accusations raised in Danny Collin���s book Vanished: The Truth about the Disappearance of Madeleine McCann (review here).
One major downside to the book is the formatting and occasional use of strange sentence structures seen in the English translation. However, it is quite possible that this is due to the book being translated and copied onto the website, rather than errors in the original copy, but it is something to be aware of. There is also a factual inaccuracy in an early chapter where Amaral talks about the possibility of Madeleine being drugged by Calpol. In fact Calpol itself does not contain an anti-histamine as alleged in the book, and so does not have a sedating effect on children, which would explain the described confusion and denial by Kate McCann that Calpol could have been used to sedate the children. A form of Calpol called Calpol Night, which is not as frequently used in the UK as regular Calpol, does contain an anti-histamine so could make a child drowsy, through it would not truly sedate them. It is unknown if this inaccuracy, which is misleading and presented badly in the book, is due to a true error on Amaral���s part, a translating issue, or an attempt to deceive.
Amaral���s book is full of anti-British statements, not surprising considering that this was suggested to be the reason he was removed from the McCann investigation in the first place. The anti-British statements come in two forms, those directed at the police and politicians of the UK and those directed at English culture in general. The former are hard to verify, and revolve around the lack of information and cooperation given to Portuguese investigators, the latter, are quite offensive to me as a Brit, suggesting that British parent���s regularly drug their children and prefer to off-load them on others rather than looking after them themselves. These offensive statements seem to have evolved through both cultural differences and misinformation, although they perhaps do apply to the situation in question, they are certainly not true representations of British parenting and Amaral should not have generalised in this way. I have to admit these statements where quite off putting for me as a reader, and distracted me from the point of the book, I fear this could be particularly distorting and distracting for those who are unaware of British culture, and could misinform their views of the case.
Overall, a detailed and compelling account of the investigation into this tragedy. All hypotheses��� are covered, according to the importance given to them by the original investigation, and evidence is explained clearly and linked to each hypothesis. I was surprised at the number of times that Amaral acknowledged the shortcomings of the investigation, almost in a apologetic way, and although there is a clear prejudice developing near the end against the McCann���s, the book is definitely less bias than the other two accounts I have read, and the accusations are justified and backed up, although sometimes minimally, by evidence.

Este livro vai muito além do propósito de adicionar mais uma história à estante de um leitor. Na verdade, é o tipo de livro que cria em nós uma grande questão: "Será que dizer a verdade faz justiça?", não nos deixando com a sensação de que ao arrumarmos o livro, encerramos uma história para sempre.
Pertenço a uma geração de Portugal que viveu a história desta menina. Não foi só no Algarve onde os olhos estavam atentos ao vislumbre de uma criança com cabelo loiro e olhos azuis. No Centro e Norte de Portugal toda a gente estava atenta, aliás O MUNDO INTEIRO estava atento, sendo até enumerados avistamentos em países como Espanha, Marrocos, Zurique etc.
Acredito vivamente na imortalização da história, não por se tratar de um desaparecimento de uma criança, pois esses há muitos, mas por ser um caso do desaparecimento que mobilizou as forças policiais de dois países e que se tornou, como Gonçalo Amaral diz "no maior caso mediático dos tempos modernos".
Já suspeitava dos pais à muito tempo. Nas suas piscinas entre Portugal e Inglaterra e na constante necessidade de recomeçar as investigações sempre com espreitadelas dos media. Mas foi de facto com a leitura deste livro que abri os olhos quanto à GRAVIDADE DA SITUAÇÃO.
Ao fim ao cabo, recorreu-se a métodos como a utilização de cães especializados para tentar detectar odor a cadáver e vestígios biológicos dentro e fora do apartamento 5A do Ocean Club. E tudo aponta para o mesmo, a verdade, que acaba por afastar quem a conseguiu desvendar, Gonçalo Amaral. Mesmo longe da coordenação do caso, provou que não era necessário a utilização de métodos especializados para se chegar ao mesmo resultado, até porque a palavra é o método mais fácil para se chegar à verdade.
Um jogo de palavras e trocas de informações que nos coloca na pele da Polícia Judiciária e que leva ao Coordenador Operacional da investigação "Maddie" a querer ser ouvido pelo mundo e a chamar a atenção de que "a verdadeira vítima é a criança desaparecida".

This book is very important and not a lie. There is no evidence that points to an abduction. There is only evidence that points to a death in the apartment and transport in the family’s car AND a coverup by the family and their co-conspirator group of friends. This has been substantiated by other investigators and investigative journalists over the years. ( See Nick Van Der Leeks books). There was even a witness Smith who identified Gerry carrying the lifeless daughter that night. I think the author is right that the death was probably an accident while Maddie was unsupervised and the parents feared imprisonment for negligence and the loss of their other children and their lavish lifestyle. I think the sniffer dog evidence which I had never heard of until now says it all. Millions wasted on this investigation by several countries and millions fraudulently raised by the family and supporters. It’s appalling. All because people can’t believe doctors could do such a thing? I don’t know how they sleep at night. The fact this book was written by the original detective at the scene of the crime adds cred to this book. He was only thrown off the case because he brought to light the fact the British would have to deal with a fraud case in the UK over this. That and they obviously know people in the UK in very high places. This book shows what rich and well connected people can pull off with some good acting thrown in. Well done to the author for closing the book on this long drawn out case.

After having finished the Netflix docuseries - "The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann" - I felt this was essential reading. When I found a free English translation available online, I knew what I was doing for the evening...
It reads very quickly and very much in the tone of a police report for the majority (at other times the author digresses to wax poetic about Portugal and it's history). Obviously the whole purpose of this book was written to explain one perspective on the case from a first-hand account, but for the majority of it he maintains what seems to be an objective stance. There are a handful of times, however, where bias in belief about what happened and why bleeds through in the author's narrative voice.
The information presented in this first-hand account seemingly aligns with what the docuseries revealed, though this contains some pieces of evidence and additional detail that the Netflix special did not cover.
At the end of all this, I don't feel convinced one way or the other on the case, but I suppose that what constitutes a real-life mystery.
I hope for peace or all involved in this tragedy, or any like it.

I read this via many translations online. I bought a physical copy to support the author because I think it's unfair that someone can't express an opinion. The book itself (and the dvd) offers much evidence against a story that we were told twelve years ago.

Acho que toda a gente que revele algum interesse pelo que ficou conhecido como “O Caso Maddie” devia ler este livro contado pela lente de Gonçalo Amaral - um verdadeiro peão no caso que abalou o país em 2007, quando a notícia sobre o desaparecimento de uma miúda de Inglaterra surgiu na vida de todos. O livro traz uma abordagem muito bem conseguida ao tema, contendo relatos e informações inéditas sobre os contornos do caso.
18 anos depois, persiste a grande dúvida: afinal, o que aconteceu a Maddie? O livro não oferece resposta e tampouco o tempo se encarregou de responder… Christian Brüeckner veio agitar esta história, apesar de (pessoalmente) não me convencer que esteja nele a chave para o mistério. Kate e Gerry serão sempre assombrados pelo que fizeram… desde terem administrado fármacos aos filhos e abandoná-los naquelas noites, até à possibilidade de serem eles os autores do fatídico destino de Madeleine! Porque sejamos francos… qual seria o verdadeiro interesse de Gonçalo Amaral em sacrificar a sua reputação se não fosse em prol da verdade sobre um caso que lhe custou tanto?

Uma leitura esclarecedora sobre o que possivelmente se passou no dia 3 de Maio de 2007 no apartamento 5A do Ocean Club.
Ao contrário do mais recente documentário da Netflix sobre o desaparecimento da Madeleine McCann, o qual, na minha opinião, tenta livrar os pais de qualquer culpa, este livro mostra ao leitor todos os factos que apontam para afinal sejam eles os culpados.
Uma leitura rápida e fluída que nos dá acesso aos bastidores da investigação policial, às teorias, suspeitas e suposições de um inspetor e da sua equipa. Uma equipa que, provavelmente, chegou o mais perto possivel de resolver este caso enigmático.

Este livro contém: springer spaniels experientes, checks de 30 minutos, um homem com uma criança ao colo, pouca cooperação da polícia inglesa, janelas mal fechadas, vestígios de cadáver, provas não vistas, creches, viagens com amigos, muita negligência, pouca segurança e (infelizmente) muitas questões ainda por responder.

Decidi fazer esta review em português porque me faz mais sentido, tendo em conta todo o contexto do livro.
Esta obra de Gonçalo Amaral fala, de um ponto de vista policial, sobre o caso do desaparecimento de Maddie McCann e como o marcou para o resto da vida. Sempre pensei que estivesse a par dos acontecimentos na Ocean Club através dos media, mas o livro fala sobre acontecimentos e factos que não foram referidos pelos mesmos.
Quando acabei o livro, o meu primeiro pensamento foi "que conveniente que este livro tenha sido banido pelos McCann". Na altura dos desaparecimentos pensei que seriam incapazes de encobrir a morte da própria filha, mas depois deste livro, a minha opinião mudou. Aqui Gonçalo Amaral mostrou imensas provas relativamente a inconsistências de discurso, pouca cooperação vinda de Inglaterra quando eram feitos pedidos de informação pelos portugueses, a negligência dos pais e o seu comportamento estranho. Coincidência? Não me parece.
Aprendi imenso sobre este caso e factos que nunca tinham sido mencionados antes, tanto que mudei a minha ideia inicial. Quero também elogiar a polícia judiciária portuguesa pela sua performance. Na minha opinião fizeram um excelente trabalho no caso e foram extremamente profissionais, competentes e motivados para encontrar os culpados.
A verdade é que este livro partiu-me o coração. O que quer que tenha acontecido à menina, espero que um dia a verdade seja encontrada e que haja finalmente justiça.

Ich hatte mir das Buch völlig anders vorgestellt.
Von einem Polizisten hätte ich erwartet, dass er systematisch Fakten, Zeugenaussagen und Indizien zusammenstellt und interpretiert. Stattdessen finde ich ziemlich viel Geschwafel über die verschiedenen Polizei-Einheiten... wer was wann erfahren und wem verschwiegen hat... wer was über wen gesagt hat... undsoweiter. Ständige Sprünge im chronologischen Ablauf machen es zusätzlich schwierig, den Überblick zu behalten.
Es sind eher "Chaotische und subjektive Erinnerungen des Polizisten Goncalo Amaral" als "Beleuchtung von Fakten und Schlussfolgerungen daraus". Der amateurhafte, unsystematische Schreibstil ist obendrein noch holprig übersetzt (ich habe die englische Ausgabe gelesen).
Der Autor kommt arg parteiisch rüber, so dass mich die Lektüre eher an seiner Kompetenz zweifeln lässt - und das, obwohl ich definitiv die Aussagen der Eltern und ihrer Clique nicht glaube. Der Leser erfährt nichts Neues, Gedankenansätze werden nicht zu Ende gebracht, es gibt deutlich konsequentere Analysen im Internet und sogar hier in den Kommentaren.

São teorias para que o terá acontecido, e parte da investigação que Gonçalo Amaral conduziu até ser suspenso, porque segundo os pais de Maddie, o que ele dizia era totalmente mentira. Como já tinha referido anteriormente, acredito que a miúda terá acordado a meio da noite, tendo ido até ao sofá, caiu e bateu com a cabeça na parede e terá morrido dessa forma. Que um dos pais, terá ido vê-los e deparou-se com o corpo inanimado de Maddie. Para que não lhes fosse retirado as outras duas crianças, decidiram enterrar o corpo de Maddie. E vocês o que acham?

This book is a lie, and anyone who believes this crap is an idiot like the author. He ruined the possibility of finding madeleine because of his narcissism. He wanted to make the case about himself, he well knowingly chose to sabotage the investigation for his own personal gain. And once his lies fell apart he decided to get back in the game by creating this fiction fantasy disgrace of a book.
