Positional chess remains a mystery to many and yet an understanding of the finer points of the game so often makes the difference between two equally matched players. Improve your positional play and you will see chess in a totally new dimension! In this unique book, International Master Jacob Aagaard selects many original examples of positional chess, the crème de la crème of those that he uses for training and study. Aagaard also delves deeply into the ideas of positional evaluation and analysis.
* Teaches how to mix calculation with evaluation * Contains many original exercises * Written by a battle-hardened expert
Possibly Unpopular opinion: Jacob Aagaard is better than Silman in crystallizing the positional concepts.
I cannot remember what level this book was designed for, but I found it easy to follow without using the board once. I am only a B level and my positional stuff is way behind my tactics. But this book made sense.
I felt that working through all the exercises made me slightly stronger. But I don't really care that I gained 50 more points. What matters more to me is that I actually started enjoying positional chess, looking forward to solving the positional exercises that frankly put me to sleep before.
I could never have reread Reasess your Chess as many times. I think Aagaard's distinction is in reducing the number of various positional factors to the bare minimum. Which allows to see the essence of the position, not its multiple composite parts.
Not sure if it makes sense, but basically seeing the board a a whole reduces the number of needed calculations and removes some doubts on what to do next.
Don't think I am bold enough to ever do the grandmaster series, but would get more sequels by Aagaard that focus more on what my little level needs to know.
I think a C level should be able to follow this book and benefit from its clear instruction.
It mixes interesting training positions (don´t look for "mate in 3" exercises) with the refreshing Aagaard style. Appropiate for intermediate to advance players.
