That Perfect Someone

Rate this book
Returning to the world of her beloved Malory family, #1 New York Times bestselling author Johanna Lindsey sweeps readers away on a seductive adventure in which a detested marriage contract turns childhood enemies into passionate lovers.
Nine years ago, Richard Allen fled England and his controlling father. Determined to live his own life, he took to the sea and settled in the Caribbean, joining a band of treasure-hunting pirates and adopting the persona of a carefree, seductive Frenchman named Jean Paul to guard the secrets of his past. When he slips back into England to carry out an urgent task, Richard becomes infatuated with a married woman, Georgina Malory. But his reckless attempt to woo Georgina at a masked ball turns out to be the worst mistake of his life because it brings him face to face with another beautiful woman.

Thrilled that her solicitors have finally come up with a way to free her from her betrothal contract to the Earl of Manford’s son who abandoned her years ago, heiress Julia Miller is ready for the marriage mart and hopes to find that perfect someone at her friend Georgina’s ball. Charmed by a masked Frenchman who gives her her first kiss, she can’t help but pursue this mysterious man—until she makes a shocking discovery. Now, to avoid falling into a ruthless nobleman’s trap, Julia must enter a risky, intimate charade with a man she never believed she could love.

Johanna Helen Howard was born on March 10, 1952 in Germany, where her father, Edwin Dennis Howard, a soldier in the U.S. Army was stationed. The family moved about a great deal when she was young. Her father always dreamed of retiring to Hawaii, and after he passed away in 1964 Johanna and her mother settled there to honor him.

In 1970, when she was still in school, she married Ralph Lindsey, becoming a young housewife. The marriage had three children; Alfred, Joseph and Garret, who already have made her a grandmother. After her husband's death, Johanna moved to Maine, New England, to stay near her family.

Johanna Lindsey wrote her first book, Captive Bride in 1977 "on a whim", and the book was a success. By 2006, with over 58 Million copies of her books have been sold worldwide, with translations appearing in 12 languages, Johanna Lindsey is one of the world's most popular authors of historical romance.

Johanna's books span the various eras of history, including books set in the Middle Ages, the American "Old West" and the popular Regency England-Scotland. She has even written a few sci-fi romances. By far the most popular among her books are the stories about the Malory-Anderson Family, a Regency England saga.

Johanna Lindsey died on Oct. 27, 2019 in Nashua, N.H. She was 67.

I'm very saddened by the books that JL has been releasing lately. It seems like she's run out of ideas and is only writing her books to reach a quota.
Please stop using the formulaic Malory plot of having to go on a rescue on the high seas. I still love James, but again, please stop making him beat everyone up. He's in his 40's already, can't he just settle for once?
I miss the feeling of heartbreak that accompanied the reading of her old books; Prisoner of My Desire, Heart So Wild and the Tony/James stories.
I miss the men being really big jerks.
I miss the huge problems that the characters have to overcome, not these little misunderstandings that her new books are all about.
I miss the old Johanna Lindsey style of writing.

The blurb for this book here at GR touts it as a Malory novel and lists Georgina Malory as one of the main protagonists. Neither point is true so if you are jonesing for a new Malory installment, you will have to look to a future book. The H/h are, however, guilty by association as the hero, Richard, is friends with Gabrielle (Captive of my Desires) and her husband Drew (Georgina's brother), while the heroine, Julia, is merely a casual acquaintance of the Malory clan in general. James Malory does have a small part in the story but Georgina, aside from uttering a few sentences, is non-existent.

Julia and Richard have been betrothed since they were children and have despised one another since the day they met. Although Julia is quite comfortable with the freedom her engagement gives her, she is now in her early 20's and is ready to find a husband. Richard, having fled London and the tyranny of his fortune-seeking father 9 years ago, lives a carefree existence in the Caribbean as a "pirate" of sorts...he hunts for buried treasure. Not knowing Richard's whereabouts, Julia is in the process of having him declared legally dead so she can break the betrothal and finally be free of the albatross she has worn around her neck for the past 16 years.

At a ball one evening, Julia meets and is charmed by a Frenchman named Jean-Paul; however, J-P is hopelessly infatuated with Georgina (who he had met in a prior book) and shamelessly stares at her across the ballroom floor. Julia, afraid that J-P's idiocy will incur James' wrath, suggests that J-P kiss her then and there, where James will see and it will serve to mollify his murderous intentions. (Julia cannot be compromised due to her state of engagement.)

The kiss deepens, taking on a seductive quality, and both Julia and J-P are powerless to stop the feelings they are beginning to have for each other. After meeting a few times during the following week, each realizes the true identity of the other and they attempt to pick up where they left off as children...vowing to hate each other till death do them part. Meanwhile, Richard's father, incensed over the fact that Richard does not intend to honor the betrothal, has his son consigned to a convict ship heading for Australia, where, hopefully he will be beaten into submission. Julia discovers his whereabouts and enlists the aid of James Malory to overtake the convict ship and free Richard.

Apparently, Julia and Richard are falling in love but not even a night of steamy sex on the boat ride home gives either one reason to believe they share anything more than mutual feelings of contempt. (Whoa...must I suspend disbelief here to think that a woman living 200 years ago would willingly give her virginity to a man she despised and vice versa?) The rest of the story teams them up for an adventure as they act upon a scheme to permanently thwart the machinations of Richard's father and his decades-old quest to acquire Julia's money to fill his own coffers.

As an audio book, I found the story - and narrator - engaging enough to hold my attention for the entire reading, but not good enough to stop whatever I was doing just to listen. Most of the story was given over to Julia's private rants against Richard, whom she loathed for childish reasons. At 21 years old, it seemed unnatural for Julia to still be harboring extremely ill feelings towards a man she had only known as a boy...a boy she had met on only a handful of occasions and whom she knew to be a victim the same as she. She was curt, accusative and just plain rude. When Richard showed up in London and Julia's plan to have him declared legally dead seemed to be in jeopardy, she demanded he leave again so she could resume her petition. She could have thrown herself on the ground kicking and screaming and wouldn't have seemed to be as much of a spoiled brat as she did when she demanded he go away because he was spoiling her plans. Me, me, me...waah, waah, waah. I found her character very hard to warm up to and could not understand what Richard's fondness for her was stemming from. However, Julia acted towards Richard much like Gabriella had initially acted towards Drew...Richard and Gabriella were close friends so perhaps he simply liked domineering, spoiled brats! Even so, with Julia still attempting to control everything up to the last page, I found it hard to believe their "happy" was going to make it to the "ever after."

For my summer reading challenge at my local library I had to choose a book to reread. I decided to choose one I haven't read in years and as we all know, rereading favorite books is like meeting up with old friends. A little surprising, a little different than we remember but still wonderful!

Johanna Lindsey has always been one of my favorite authors! In her Malory-Anderson Family books we have a group of people that never fail to delight. Big, strong rogues that meet equally strong women and make wonderful children.

In this installment we have the ex-pirate hero who left England years ago to escape his tyrant of a father who arranged a marriage for him and our heroine when they were children. Our heroine has spent the last few years running her father's company since he was in an accident and was brain damaged. Her goal is to get out of this marriage contract so she can marry someone else and get on with her life.

Excellent story with excellent characters!

Books I Own. Mad About Series Challenge 2024. HRBC. Trope: Extended Family and Friends, RomCom, Regency R, Betrothed in Childhood. Enemies to Lovers.
MC's: H Richard Allen (Jean -Paul, pirate , Caribbean) Earl of Mandford's son, h Julia Miller, Heiress (brothed to Richard in childhood)
This is the first book where the MC's are not related to the Malorys or the Andersons. Richard Allen is Gabby's best friend (Drew Anderson hubby) and Richard thought he was in love with Georgina (wife of James Malory). Julia Miller by being engaged to Richard all her life goes to all the "Ton" parties and balls. She is neighbors and good friends with Georgiana Malory.

Malory's and Anderson's mentioned in this book: Regina Eden, James & Georgina Malory, Jeremy & his wife Malory, Drew & Gabby Anderson, Anthony Malory, Clinton and Thomas Anderson.

Enemies to Lovers is my favorite trope. This book was highly entertaining with the story of this couple being betrothed since childhood, growing hating each other and their families back stories. The love scenes near the middle and the end of the book were lovely. I liked that James Malory is one of the central characters in this book. He is the dominant character throughout the series and my favorite character.

Couples in this series:
Book 1- Love Only Once ( Nicholas Eden and Regina Ashton)
Book 2-Tender Rebel (Anthony Malory and Roslynn Chadwick)
Book 3-Gentle Rogue (James Malory and Georgina Anderson)
Book 4-The Magic Of You (Amy Malory and Warren Anderson)
Book 5- Say You Love Me (Derek Malory and Kelsey Langton)
Book 6- The Present (Christopher Malory and Anastasia Stephanoff)
Book 7- A Loving Scoundrel (Jeremy Malory and Danette “Danny” Hilary)
Book 8-Captive Of My Desires (Drew Anderson and Gabrielle Brooks)
Book 9-No Choice But Seduction (Boyd Anderson and Katey Tyler)
Book 10-That Perfect Someone (Richard Allen and Julia Miller)
Book 11-Stormy Persuasion (Judith Malory and Nathan Tremayne)
Book 12-Beautiful Tempest (Jacqueline Malory)

******************************************************************************
Review I Liked:For me, Johanna Lindsey seems to have an uneven writing style. Most of her books I either start off hating and then love by the end, or I start off loving them and hate them by the end. A few I hated all the way through but so far I haven't found a single one that I loved from start to finish. That Perfect Someone falls into the "hated it to start, but loved it by the end" category.

Our two main characters are so obnoxious in the beginning, what with their snotty bickering and Richard's ridiculous fake accent, that I didn't care if they fell in love or not. And JL violated one of my personal rules for a good romance by having the hero be completely head-over-heels, willing-to-risk-death-just-to-see-her in love with someone else. I HATE that trope in romance novels because it always makes the heroine seem like a consolation prize. As with Let Love Find You, the other woman in this case is one of the heroines from earlier in the series, in this case, Georgina Malory. So apparently when JL sets out to write a series, she falls so in love with her gorgeous first heroines that she feels the need to make all subsequent males in the series pant after them, lest we forget how amazing they are.

But, thankfully the story moved passed that inauspicious beginning. As the blurb on the back of the book explains, Richard and Julia were betrothed as children and spent years hating each other. I thought JL did a really great job of establishing that neither child was more wrong than the other and that both had their reasons for behaving as they did. They were both reacting, as children do, to the unfair circumstances they found themselves in. Richard rebelling against his abusive and domineering father and Julia reacting to what she perceived to be Richard's snobbery.

The development of their relationship in the book I found to be very believable too. In the beginning they were right back to hating each other as they had as children but gradually that began to change. It made sense to me that their first few kisses began as fights that spiraled into angry passion. And by the end of the story I was thoroughly on board with them as a couple and completely believed in their romance. And I loved the way JL wrapped up the story with Richard's father as well.

So all in all, I was thoroughly enjoying this book by the end. I did find it weird that Julia knew about Richard's infatuation with Georgina but it never gave her even a moment's pause or jealousy. I mean, Richard risked death at the hands of that psychopath James Malory just to stare at Georgina from across the room. That's a pretty serious obsession there. But Julia never seemed to care. And since JL dropped that aspect of the story fairly early on and Richard never seemed to give Georgina a passing thought after the first Act, I figure it was just a plot device to get Richard to England so the rest of the story could happen.

As an aside, I'm still waiting to see what it is that everyone else loves so much about James Malory. I mean, at the very end of the story, Richard admitted he loved Julia but was going to let her go because he thought that was what she wanted and he loved her enough to want her to be happy. James's reaction to this was to sucker punch Richard in the gut, leaving him doubled-over on the floor. This is not normal behavior, people!!! Honestly, you'd be hard pressed to find a single scene in the whole series in which James Malory is both present and NOT punching or threatening to punch someone. And usually his attacks are completely unprovoked sucker punches that catch his victims off guard, leaving them no chance to defend themselves. That's the work of a nasty bully, not the lovable rogue we're supposed to think he is.

But anyway, Richard and Julia's story was quite good and I'd recommend it to a friend.

3´5 estrellas.

*Reread/Rate Review*

Increasing starts to 4 from 3 before. Not sure why I had this starred so low. This is one of the newer Mallory/Anderson novels so this is probably one of the one's I've read the least. Probably only 3 or 4 times whereas some of the others I've read dozens of times. Surprisingly enough while our beloved Mallory and Anderson's are of course all up in this book the stars of the show aren't from either family. While I love Jean Paul aka Richard, his funny french accent and his playful manner. We get to see a whole new side of Richard in this book. His playful side is almost non existent and his french accent disappears quite early in the book... mores the pity.

Richard comes back with Gabi for George's birthday celebration only to come face to fist with James Malory.. and also come face to face with the girl/marriage he has been running from for almost a decade. Richard in attempt to thwart his horrid father and refusing to honor a marriage contract made a terrible enemy of Julia Miller when she was only 7 years old. All of their meetings, forced by their parents, over the years have ended in bloodshed and this one starts the same. Julia is furious Richard decides to turn up just weeks before her freedom was concreted. Now they must work together in order to get out of the contract that binds them or end up loosing everything to Richards evil father.. or so they think.

Not sure why I made this a 3 star when I first marked this read. Its still incredibly entertaining with a super engaging plot. This book also has a title that goes with the story so well having watched the characters talk about their "perfect someone" in this. Not just some random romantic sounding name but a title that actually fits the story. I still got all the warm feels and cameo's from all my favorite Malorys and Andersons.

Well, that was more like the Johanna Lindsey I loved when I started reading romance oh so many years ago!

I really enjoyed Richard and Julia's story! I like both the characters and how they came together Having been engaged since they were children and enemies almost as long, they had to almost start over as strangers - literally! I liked how the two families were the antithesis of each other, one loving and one controlling. Her loving her father made his hating his father even more real for me. His father was a real creep! Seeing everyone work against him was an extra added bonus. I liked watching the hero and heroine's perceptions of each other crumble as they got to know each other and fall in love. And there was a super sweet scene near the end that just made me sigh.

What I liked about this story, was that it made sense - the story wasn't a farce and the characters were likable. While I have liked even the more recent Johanna Lindsey books I've read, I thought so many of the earlier ones were better. This one was more like some of the earlier ones. Though if you were expecting a Malory in this love story, you would be disappointed. They do play a part in the story, but neither the hero or the heroine is actually a part of the family even as an in-law or outlaw.

Kinda boring. I ended up skipping over some parts. Not as great as some of Johanna Lindsey's older books. I didn't really believe how he could all of a sudden fall in love with her since there was really nothing that she showed him that he could love. She didn't really DO anything that might make him fall in love with her and vice versa.

For me, Johanna Lindsey seems to have an uneven writing style.

I'll be honest, I'm a little (ok, alot) disappointed about JL's recent contributions to HR. I absolutely couldn't finish the last book with Boyd and secret Malory heroine (oh, kill me now). But unexpectedly, this book was pretty enjoyable.

The hero is our favorite rogue, Richard Allen, aka. Jean Paul. He's much more exciting than the rest of the Andersons, I must say. And Richie has a past, or actually a childhood engagement with the heroine, Julia Miler. Unfortunately, both of them hate each other - for childish reasons, yet making them abhor the marriage contract that Richard's cruel and completely deranged father (an Earl, or something) insists on honoring (for selfish reasons, of course). Julia, at the age of 21, after 9 years of Richard's absence decides that something must happen to let her lead a normal life. Her plan includes declaring Richard dead. That is, until Richard comes back to London, to drool over Georgina Malory (not the smartest of plans). Instead, he unknowingly gets tangled with Julia, and so starts their love story as they overcome their misguided hate as well as Richard's daddy's binding contract.

Ok, I actually really like Richard Allen. He reminds me of Jeremy - kinda dumb sometimes, but a really nice heart. He has done some stupid things to Julia, which I blame his father, but otherwise, he's so lovable. Julia is a great character too - and she doesn't need pants to be strong and independent. She does have a temper that gets the best of her. but its more bark than bite (except when it comes to young Richard).

The biggest flaws:
- The childhood perspectives were completely unrealistic
- James Malory saves the day, again
- Deranged father - seriously, she didn't have to make him inhuman

There were many scenes with previous H/h's, which was kinda nice. But it was kinda unnecessary to have Neanderthal-like behavior (*cough*James*cough*). It contradicts the time-period, but that's a standard established by JL long ago, so its not right to still hang onto that.

Overall, a fun read, but don't go in expecting alot. It helped that I actually liked Richard Allen when he was first introduced.

If it weren't for the emotion, I would have rated this a 1 star.
Intriguing plot concept (in the summary on the back cover), strong tension between Richard and Julia, but there were A LOT of problems with the execution of the story.

First, total unbelieveable plot.
Ridiculous, cartoonish characters and situations.
The ear biting, nose breaking- way forced.
Her father waking up after five years and being able to process information – the fact that she’s five years older! – just fine? Yeah. Right. Beyond ridiculous.
Everything in this book was so over the top, so shoved down your throat – I could not get into it or the characters.

The beginning dragged: repeated info dumps of boring and unnecessary information. Chapter 16's flashback stopped the story dead with info that had already been conveyed.

Julia and Richard fall into bed. She's a mid-20s virgin yet the scene is written as if it was from Sex in the City. Julia shows no sign of virginal shock, curiosity, etc.

Richard's rescue was too easy - his father's claim he'd "call him back" when he's sent off on a convict boat to Australia for slave labor - also totally unreal. But this part, which could have made for a strong finish in an otherwise weakly written book, was glossed over. Missed opportunity of making an honest, action-packed ending that could have brought closure to all the tension. It was more Sunday picnic than rescue on the high seas.

I did like that the author wasn't afraid to have another male character stronger than Richard. Richard was not the total alpha male. Kudos there.

Good emotional tension between these characters; good plot concept but the author needs historical knowledge of the setting and society behavior. As written it didn't fit the time or place it was set in. If info dumps and flashbacks are a pet peeve, this book won't work.

Part of the Malory series, this book tucks in nicely with the rest of the books. It is... dare I say it... much more like the first books in this series (which I adored) than some of the later ones (which were "meh"). Most of the story is fabulous! But not the use of exclamation points! There are a lot of them! It reads more like teen fan-fic sometimes than a Johanna Lindsey, well-respected, seasoned author! Especially the end!
Julia Miller's family is not haute ton. They're not even ton, just fabulously wealthy. However, Julia has been accepted by the ton because she has been engaged since she was a child to the son of an earl. She is therefore not only going to be ton one day, she is no threat to any of their eligible daughters. One teeny problem though, she hates her fiancé. Plus, he took off nine years ago and she is ready to get out of her contract. Unfortunately, the reason he took off is his thoroughly despicable father who has steadily refused to break the betrothal. Julia has also had family problems since her father and mother were in a horrible carriage accident which killed her mother and left her father mentally incapacitated, though with moments of clarity. Julia is starting to put together a case to declare Richard (her intended) dead... when the infuriating man shows up in England. It seems he's been hanging out in the Caribbean, working as a pirate or a "treasure hunter." Unfortunately, their childhood animosity hasn't faded though their attraction has definitely grown. There are a LOT of incredible situations (Richard's father has him sent to a penal colony when he still refuses to marry Julia) but, if you've read Lindsey, this is not out of the ordinary.

4,5/5

super recomendable.

Okay I loved this book, however when author talked about James's son Jermey and his wife I felt lost. Was I missing a book? Most of the characters were talked about which was nice.
Overall this was a good read

Julia Miller, having been betrothed all of her life, and never had a suitor since her betrothed disappeared years ago, but is unable to court or marry a man of her choosing since there is a contract between their families. Then one night at a masked ball she dances and shared a intimate kiss with a Frenchman, and in the end turns out to be the one man that she hates more than life itself....her betrothed....Richard Allen. Richard despised his father forcing him to have to marry Julia all those years ago, but now refuses to marry her but through a series of events they make a pact with each other to work together to find the contract and burn it so they can get on with their lives, however neither of them expected that they would fall in love with each other and wonder if there can ever be a happily ever after....will all the time that has passed...but true love finds a way through the most stubborn of hearts, especially with two people perfect for each other...
That Perfect Someone is the tenth installment in the Malory Series. For years I have just reading books involving the Malory family, and although this was far from my favorite one...it was still quite enjoyable and I am thrilled that I finally was able to read it ( I know I know I am way behind LOL) I found the story captivating and the characters so innocent and childish at times...there was a vulnerability throughout the story with Julia and Richard. I loved how the story turned from two strangers who meet in a ballroom and shared a heated kiss...to hated enemies...then back to sharing a commonality with one another...Desire, such a powerful motivator and Johanna Lindsey portrayed this story beautifully, and although didn't have the certain aspects that I enjoyed in the earlier Malory books...I was feeling quite entertained from beginning to end!!!

I haven't read any Johanna Lindsey's books for the longest time, so I am kind of lost on the addition to the beloved Malory family.

This is most definitely NOT a Malory family story. The heroine happens to be a friend of Georgina and the hero happens to be friends with Gabby (no clue who she is since I haven't read that book yet).

POSSIBLE SPOILERS so proceed with caution!

What the heck happened to Lindsey? She used to have a way with words and I could feel her characters. I kept on waiting for the story to get interesting and it never did. The "falling in love" part is just dumb. I am not convinced they're even in love considering how much they hated each other their whole lives. What changed? Yes, she's pretty, and he's hot, is that it?

I'm giving it a 2 instead of 1 just because I'm being super generous here. I do like the appearance of the Malorys and for that I'm giving it a one whole star. The other star is because I do like her relationship with her dad. In fact, that's the best part of the book. That's the only part I am actually feeling something. The rest, major snoozefest!

My friend gave me this book so I'm glad I didn't end up spending any money on this. This doesn't even feel like a Johanna Lindsey's book. Did she get a ghost writer? Either way, this is not a keeper for me. It took me days to finish, which never happened with Lindsey's books before.

TPS seharusnya gak perlu masuk list Malory Saga *gak rela*
soalnya hero n heroine nya gak ada darah Malory ato Anderson.
Richard n Julia critanya cm 'kenalan' ni the Malorys...

Richard sangat membenci ayahnya sang tiran aka Earl of Manford, jd pas pertama ktemu Julia, dia langsung benci stengah mati..
Julia pun merasakan hal yg sama.
Mereka sepakat utk saling membunuh jika berada dlm jarak yg cukup dekat utk melakukannya.
Tidak tahan dgn hidupnya yg menyedihkan Richard yg bru brumur 16thn kabur dan mutusin buat jd perompak...
Julia sendiri frustasi bgt pengen mengakhiri pertunangannya dgn Richard..

Seharusnya judul indo ni TPS dendam dari masa lalu hmpfh
mrka bdua ky kucing n tikus, brantem beneran, ampe bdarah darah.
Bukan cm adu mulut!

Gw gak dapet feel n chemistry Rich n Jewel/Julia..
Brasa ada yg kuranggg,...
Kurang drama nya, kurang kocak khas Malory family...
Gak ada wow moment,
flat githu..

Ni tipe nvl yg gak bakalan gw reread.
Pdhl trjemahan nya bagus...
