Knowing a few simple phrases of Malay opens up an entirely new, more fulfilling travel experience. Malaysians love it if you can communicate in their language and in only a few short hours this book allows you to do just that.
Everyday Malay is designed specifically with the visitor in mind and contains everything you need to begin communicating effectively from the very first day. Vocabulary and phrases are given in order of importance, so you learn the essentials first. A bilingual dictionary at the back contains 2,000 of the most commonly used Malay words. Also included are extensive notes on grammar, etiquette, body language, and cultural do's and don'ts that will make your visit go more smoothly.
Thanks to this book, my Malay is slightly less tragic, and I now have a decent understanding of its grammar. Hurrah and huzzah! This is a good starting point for anyone interested in picking up the language. It's easy to read through and provides useful, practical dialogue examples. The grammar section in particular I felt was great, being very concise yet enlightening, justifying my purchase of the book. However, I noticed a couple of errors here and there (e.g. translating tujuh as six in one example sentence), so readers beware. As with any language resource, never rely on just one book.
