The authors narrative choices are just captivating. The story is navigated through the lens of the lead, Illyia. Her narration is languid and detached, creating a stolid feeling. You really feel her anguish; no over the top art is needed. She never has a manic “breaking point”, only a dejected lethargy which further drives her hopelessness. The writing is so captivating it feels like you’re trapped in hell with her; it’s messy and pathetic and deplorable.
