A world created in a pocket of time to provide a Pool of Players
David can’t settle back into his old life after playing The Jester’s games. Besides all the unanswered questions about why his time was created and how people are being selected for the games, he wants to find his father, but how can he slip through again?
The answer comes when he reveals the recruiters to the public, triggering a response from The Jester who grants his wish and snatches him away.
Back in the parallels, The Jester reveals his past and puts David through brutal and punishing times. An unexpected meeting with his father leaves David with a question he’s scared to answer, but attempts to speak to him again are interrupted by The Jester who wants to train David as his replacement.
Hanging out at The Jester’s house, David learns what he is capable of, and, in a bizarre twist of time, why he’s the perfect candidate.
Pool of Players is a dark, sci-fi fantasy that gives a new meaning to time travel. It's the second book in The Jester series, attempting to answer the questions left by the first book, The Game.
Book loving, writer, who likes to read several books at a time because she's a bit crazy like that.
Go-to authors are Stephen King, James Herbert, Terry Pratchett, Raymond Feist and Clive Barker, with Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, Robert A Heinlein and lots of others in between.
It's not so much about loving particular genres, as much as finding stories and characters to engage and resonate with - but I will always head for Horror, Thrillers, and Science Fiction, before any others (my guilty pleasure is Self-Help.)
I write dark stuff, sci-fi stuff, surreal stuff, psychological stuff and a mixture of all four.
Well, well, well what an utter treat is to be found in this the second instalment in the fantasy that revolves around the Jester and the many worlds of the multiverse. We learn more about the origins of the Jester and why David is so intrinsically entwined with all the shenanigans, which turns out to be a little more than he first imagined. As for the writing itself, it is elegantly put with twists and turns in all the right places which keep you guessing. You are constantly wanting to continue reading until it is far too late in the evening to find out more, while not wanting the tale to end. Would recommend wholeheartedly. So stop reading my drivel and go click buy, unless you haven't read the first instalment, then go click buy on that one then come back here.
Author Miranda Kate delivers a solid, well written second book in the Jester series.
David searches for answers regarding the hows and whys of time travel, his missing father and the girls, Isabella and Annie.
Fast paced travel between dimensions answers some of David’s questions but also leads to more. He learns how to shift himself without the assistance of the girls or the Jester. Meets with his dad and loses him again. David begins to question whether he will replace the Jester or is HE the Jester?
If you enjoy science fiction with a hint of dystopian horror, you will enjoy this series.
This is a really interesting book! Second in this exciting sci fi fantasy series! I do think they would be better read in order, then you will get the most out of the intricate plot! Great ideas, good characters & ideas! I will look for more by this writer!
I read the short story that precedes this book, and I think this could work as a standalone. Of course, it's not easy to tell after the fact, so maybe grab "The Game," too.
I had a lot of questions after the first story. Not that it wasn't complete, but that it left me wanting more, to find out what happens next. This one answers all the questions pretty well, but then left me with more. Maybe we'll get another book. This could be a whole series!
I enjoyed this story and the dialogue was pretty good. It's not really my style of writing, but that's just me, no fault of the author. I think that the story is unique - someone named The Jester basically kidnaps people and sends them between dimensions to play a game. Some make it home, some never do.
The ones that do make it back don't want to talk about it, so no one really knows what's going on or why. This story will take you on a mad journey through the dimensions.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest and unbiased review.
I did not read the first two books of this series, and I believe that would have helped me understand the book. I had a difficult time in the very beginning understanding what was happening, following the lingo, and connecting to the characters.
Once I caught on, I still had a hard time wrapping my mind around the concept - it is kind of mind-blowing. But, all in all the book was well-written and I would read more by the author. In fact, I might just go back and read the first two of this set!
I had a hard time getting through this book. Not because it was written badly but it just did not come together for me. I did not feel connected to the characters, which I need to have in some ways. It just may have been a little too science-fictiony for me but maybe not for you.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest and unbiased review.
This is the second book in the Jesters series and to get the best from it I’d really recommend reading the books in order! Well written with excellent characters and a tight storyline
Pool of players by Miranda Kate. Good read. Likeable story. I did like Daveid. Issabelle and Annie. Wasn't sure about Jester. I hope there is more to come. 4*.
