STRUTTING LIGHTBUGS

Rate this book
A supernatural force on a killing spree is all set to wipe out an entire town to avenge an injustice meted out a century ago. The murders are ruthless and gory invoking terror throughout the town. A leader, the town head, knows the real nature of this supernatural force and tries to stop it but his attempts are futile. His abilities and integrity are put to severe test.A dancer who sees the world in grey and has his own demons to slay, is reluctant to pick up the cudgels. Not only his identity, his life is also in danger. How do their paths intersect? How do they resolve their convictions?A roller coaster ride of supernatural events combined with dance, music, and gender angst promises to keep you, the reader, thoroughly entertained.FOREWORD‘Strutting Lightbugs’ is a genre-bender inasmuch as it addresses one of the most divisive, yet hyper-relevant, social issue of today, smartly wrapped in the foil of an ever-popular fiction trope – the supernatural thriller. Kalam Babu and Lavanya Nukavarapu spin a riveting yarn that seamlessly fuses Indian culture, classical dance, spirituality, spirits, mythology, human psychology, history and most tellingly, gender boundaries and gender angst. Their lucid storytelling and fluid style transport the reader into a mysterious, even sinister, world that moves seamlessly between the past and present. The protagonist, and with them the reader, are hurled into crises beyond the realms of normal human experience, yet somehow, magically, amidst all its breathlessness, the authors underline, and celebrate, the best facets of human behaviour, and the gender neutrality of art. As a classical Indian dancer, I have, whilst plying my passion across the globe as a dancer, teacher and speaker, have very often encountered dancers whose biological gender, in their societies, have stigmatised their desire to dance – often irrevocably. The fact that it is not ‘manly’ for a man to have a desire to dance the dance forms traditionally associated with women, the fact that transgenders face ridicule for simply wanting to dance to the rhythms of normal life in their own manner, the fact that we bracket activities, vocations, sartorial sense into gender boxes based on man-made traditions and societal norms – are real, compelling issues. The human race has come a long way in terms of evolution, and the 21st century, and beyond, are perhaps the best period in our cumulative lives, to come to terms with, and blithely celebrate our diversity - to accept each other as we are, and want to be - not merely by how we look, what we wear, how we speak and how we ‘must be’ just because that’s the way we ‘should be.’ ‘Strutting Lightbugs’ celebrates this ethos, this belief, and does so in a manner that engagingly entertains, yet effortlessly enlightens! I would go even as far as calling it a morality tale, and in the very best traditions of that genre, it is one that should well stand the test of time – past, present and future.I wish Kalam and Lavanya every success with ‘Strutting Lightbugs’ and look forward to many more fabulous fables from them.Sohini RoychowdhuryDancer, Producer, Speaker Founder – Sohinimoksha World Dance & Communications (Madrid-Kolkata-Berlin)Founder – Sohinimoksha Artes de la India (Madrid)www.sohinimoksha.com

STRUTTING LIGHTBUGS
by Kalam Babu

This was my first time reading a book by Kalam Babu and I found this book well written and that I enjoyed her writing style with the dual point of view.
This was a good book, I liked it a lot. This is a beautiful piece of writing , i appreciate the facts presented through out the book, it is clearly well researched.
The story begins when a group of tourists visit the fortress, one of them is lost, the missing person discovers another stage of the fortress, sculptures, architects, various dance poses carved on the wall and other prejudiced art forms, when a person practices this art form , Then he can be considered helpless.
Due to the disease in this society, this work is of great significance and attracts readers.
The language used is clear and the narrative is wonderful.
The author did a great job in writing this beautiful book.
Highly recommended 😌✌️

Must read

Dance is a graceful and most expressive form of art which spreads a lot of positivity. The story Strutting Lightbugs has beautifully explained the grace of the professional dancers as well as focussed on the negative aspects like discrimination. The story starts with unusual killings in a fort taking us through rollercoaster ride of fireflies and ghosts involving the love for dance.

The backdrop and the relations like "Mamayya" used in this story felt very relatable. And also the description regarding the places in Hyderabad made me more connected to the story. It is not always you get to read your own mother tongue in an English story and I totally enjoyed it. Coming to the cover, it is very attractive and apt for the story. The plot is very gripping and the narration is brilliant making the reader flow with the words.

All through the story, the description about the dance performances were so beautifully written. I have enjoyed reading this story thoroughly as it has got everything starting from thrill to love.
The overall concept of Strutting Lightbugs is very unique and I would say it to be a must read.

The Ardhanareeshwara wrapper is a metaphor of the main theme of the book on the question whether love for and excellence in dance is unmanly. The reader gets to appreciate the research by the authors on the ancient styles Kuchipudi and Andhra Natyam as the story line swaps Devadasi era and the present. On the other hand twists and horror and suspense get intense chapter by chapter with a potential for a thrilling web series content. A successful coauthoring by Kalam Babu and Lavanya Nukavarappu.

✨NOVELTY: Needless to mention about the the cover of the page which has been one of the major highlights and give all reasons to make the reader intrigue and curious about the turning pages. The author has done the commendable job to maintain the curiosity throughout.

✨GUESSWORK: Murder, tourist, job and dance all these elements are present in the book which are not so interlink due to which we are unable to gauge the plot of the book.

Author- Kalam Banu and Lavanya Nukavarapu
Genre- Fiction
Length- 160 pages.
Rating -4.5/5

We all have been in touch with Dancing once in our life or some of us must be doing it professionally and as we know the most beautiful form of dance is our Indian Classical Dance. Indian classical dance is an umbrella term for various performance arts rooted in musical theatre styles, whose theory and practice can be traced to the Sanskrit text, Natyashastra.
Well, today we have a book related to this topic, Strutting Lightbugs which beautifully explains the grace of professional dancing and their challenges.

The book successfully and beautifully depicts the Indian culture, Classical Dance , spirituality, and a lot more in it.
It starts with an unusual incident with a tourist and the story goes on. And the murder takes place, now why the murder happened , who was the murderer, who was murdered, to know this, you should literally and literally grab the book.

What is the most attractive thing about the book is the reader gains a flow and flows with story.
It feels like the reader herself or himself is going into the story.

I picked up the book because of its alluring cover, that cover painting is really well and I'm already attracted towards the books where I can read more about Indian culture.
The language is lucid and the book is slow paced.

My recommendation are for the readers who really like to read some Indian culture related things.

a charming secret that will remove the dreariness of book perusing. the subtleties of this book are appealing and the depictions are all around got comfortable my brain. i adored the portrayal. the portrayal was exhaustive and easily composed for the perusers. the heavenly elements entitled in the book were impeccably set for setting a demeanor of secret. i was in a daze while perusing this book where i was moved by creative mind. this book has everything to bring to the table to a peruser who loves otherworldly atmosphere, music, dance, show, brain science, and so forth it's anything but an air of secret when one vacationer disappears from the touring of the fortress. it likewise draws out the malicious generalizations of the general public like attitude that goes with the male artists. i adored how the creator purchased the instance of a powerful spine chiller. the passings that were going on were puzzling and exciting simultaneously. the plot was confusing and mystifying was its peak. i would prescribe this book to all perusers who appreciate a decent thrill ride with a paranormal peak.

With an array of mythology and unknown episodes comes this book. This is the story of protagonists maneuvering through war, with the help of sharp intellect and unwavering gallantry. This is also a story that casts itself across the social strata, to portray the fabric of relationships in a very tattered and revealing manner. It is a book that isn’t directed, isn’t sharpened—rather appears to come to us like a web of conversations and events, imbibing an all-round inclusion of the storytelling spirit and essence of mythology. ⁣

Authors have philosophized this story in such a bright and exuberant way, that it ceases to be just a story. It evolves and transcends to represent the germination and thrive of certain ideologies, figments of emotions, and some very distinct trails of thought that question some of the very basic foundations of how we perceive and analyse. ⁣

The quality of bewilderment coats the book with a glaze of soothe and calm. The text, while reading, makes you visualize the interplay of events unfolding before your eyes. You see it all: war clouds, calamity, liberation, enlightenment and realities of life.⁣

A book with dance, drama, mystery, thriller, murder, love, horror and much more. The starting of the book will take you on a rollercoaster ride where you will enjoy the story9of the book. With each each your curiosity will increase to read more and more.
The plot is based on a murder which is unexpected and then the story takes a turn.
The protagonist, and with them the reader, are cast into crises beyond the realms of normal human experience.
Author has portrayed the characters and the plot wonderfully, with the traditional dance, drama, social and practical issues he has kept the reader connected to the book.
Who was the murderer? How did the journey took a twist?
Language inscribed is pretty much easy to grasp.
The cover is really an intriguing one that makes the reader ponder over what the story is about.
I am just a victim of my own expectations. I would still encourage people to try it, if it looks like something you might enjoy.

When I first pick this book I thought that it would be something about Mythology or connected to it as the picture describes the total theme.

But to my surprise it's not related to mythology but a the total opposite. A supernatural power is killing people.

The cover is so beautiful. Can you guess how the cover inspired? It's a symbol of natraj dance statue. When shiv is doing the Tandav dance in the greave of Sati. The combination of two idols. But the picture is in a little controversial as no one is accepting the picture where two different powered person can be united. The painter is being cursed for doing this.

But the question is who is killing the people?

The murders are well planned and well structured. It's like a mirage for a normal people.
The murders has been made so ruthlessly.

What is the relation between the power and the people?
Why it's being killing the people?

A supernatural force is on loose to wipe out an entire town for an injustice which was done a century ago. The people are being killed ruthlessly to spread the fear. The leader leading the town knew about this supernatural force and he tries to stop it but his attempts are going in vain.
Many social stereotypes have been penned down by the authors which are still prevailing in the society even after the humans have developed socially and culturally. All these are potraited using an example of a dancer who is stuck within the illogical norms of the society.
This is an amazing blend of reflection of the society with a fictional world where supernatural powers are existing too. It has influences from dance and music along with suspense and thriller too.
It is being layered nicely with the well potraited characters. The language used is lucid. Plus the narration is good and simple making it a comfortable read for all.

Strutting Lightbugs book by author's Kalam Babu and Lavanya Nukavarapu is a great read.

Plot revolves mostly around Kiran, Sravanya, Ravi, Mamayya and Bhushan. Read to know more about each of them, how they cross each others lives, bond they share, who are behind murders, what's their motive, who teams up with whom, so in the end do they solve the problem, get answers to before and more by reading.
Authors beautifully weave a nice plot with Kuchipudi dance, family drama, love track, horror angle, a little bit of social /societal practice/ issues. Narration keeps readers glued with book, characters appear real and agreeable. Happy the way plot ends and language is easy.

Loved reading the plot and would recommend to all fiction lovers.

Book Review:

Strutting Lightbugs is a supernatural thriller. The story revolves around unnatural gory murders by a supernatural power exacting revenge of a century-old-atrocity. How the people of the town get together to solve the mystery forms the story. Will they succeed in their endeavour?

Kalam Babu and Lavanya Nukavarapu have penned a magnificent thriller with elements of supernatural, horror, suspense, angst and a lot more. The dilemma of a male dancer regarding his gender because of social construct is one of the many highlights of the book. The book, besides being engaging and entertaining, is also thought provoking. The writing is top notch and the story flows smoothly keeping you on the edge till the very end. Happy reading!

This book is a nice and worthy pick for me. The genre is partly thrilling and partly fantasy. The story is nicely written taking care of the plot and storyline maintainance.
The twists and turns kept me hooked till the end.
The vivid character description and portraits modified the book due to which it became more connecting and relevant.
My curiosity only grew while turning the page, it is a sure page turner.
However at some places the story could have been different in my opinion so that the points do not lacked the mysterious feel.
But it doesn't affect the book much and still the book is worthy read.
The language is advanced which i really liked and pace is also moderate.
A must-read for everyone who loves to travel through their imaginations.

I'm just speechless at this moment. It's not because I haven't read anything better than this but it's because I have not read a better amalgamation of supernatural stuff with traditions of dance and music. The book starts on a pretty pacey note, as in the mystery is set in the intial few pages of the book itself.

The other thing which is the most beautiful thing about the book is the constant subtle references to south indian tradition. This, I believe is missing when I read books by Indian authors.

Overall I feel like it's a pretty good book with strong charcters and with enough mystery to keep the readers hooked.

For me it's a 5 star read for sure.
