סאגה משפחתית רבת תהפוכות הנפרשת על פני שלושה דורות של נשים ביפו, מתחילת המאה העשרים ועד ערב קום המדינה.
תמרה, בת הדור השלישי, מנסה להתחקות על הכוחות הגורליים והאכזריים שקבעו את קורות משפחתה. העלילה המפותלת מתגלגלת כמסע גילוי של סודות העבר - כמין טקס התבגרות מיוסר, שבו נחשף כל סוד במועדו ושופך אור חדש על חייה של תמרה, המתפענחים לאט לאט לה עצמה.
במסעה מלוות אותה דמויות רבות, מתות וחיות, מהן שסכסכו את נפשה ללא תקנה ומהן שהביאו לה מעט מנוחה ונחמה: אמה שאיננה עוד, סבתה האשכנזיה שמגדלת אותה, סבתה הספרדיה שמטפחת אותה, לטיפה הזונה שמביאה לה אח במקום אחיה שלא נולד, בנציון התרנגול שאוהב אותה, כריסטודולוס הנזיר שהיה לאהובה, ועוד רבים אחרים.

Shifra Horn
14 books7 followersShifra Horn was born in Tel Aviv. She lives in the Old Malcha neighbourhood of Jerusalem and in Auckland New Zealand. After majoring in Bible Studies and Archeology - BA (Hons)- at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, she earned an MA in Bible Studies. Horn also studied mass communications and completed a teaching degree.
Horn worked as an educational officer for the World Union of Jewish Students, and helped to organize the airlift of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. Horn also participated in the campaign to free Soviet and Syrian Jews, producing films and written material.
In the course of her work with Jewish students from oppressed communities around the world, she discovered a village of Jewish Marranos who had kept their Jewish identity secret for over 500 years. Horn's activity in the village of Belmonte in northwest Portugal resulted in the entire population converting fully to Judaism .
Horn was a spokesperson for the Israel Absorption Ministry until her departure for Japan, where she served as Far East correspondent for the Israel Defense Forces Radio station and Ma'ariv daily newspaper for five years. Horn worked as the director of the Tokyo Jewish Community Center and taught Bible Studies and Hebrew at the Bible College in Ginza, Tokyo.
Upon her return to Jerusalem, she opened a public relations firm, and lectured on Japan and literary topics. Her books have been translated from Hebrew into English, French, Dutch, German, Italian, Greek, Mandarin and Turkish.

The book begins in Israel in 1900 with the birth of twins (only of whom the girl Nechama survives) to Simcha, a refugee from pogroms in Russia, blinded and maimed by a terrible pogrom in Russia.
Nechama, ill treated by her mother, takes off with the scion of an ancient Jerusalem Sephardi family and dies while giving birth to the narrator, Tamara.
Tamara in this colourful, beautiful, poignant and eventful masterpiece of Israeli literature describes growing up with a cast of interesting characters and from when she is little her constant companion is Yosef, a son of an Arab prostitute fathered by Tamara's grandfather Fishke and adopted by the latter's grandparents.
Set against the British occupation of Israel between the World wArs and the Arab pogroms against the Jews such as a vivid description of the Jaffa pogroms of 1921 in which hundreds of Jews where slaughtered by Arab mobs to the chilling cries of "Itbach al Yahud" and "Allah Akbar".
During the turmoil of her own childhood and youth Tamara must piece together the hidden secrets of her family.

This was one of those books that made me want to start reading it again immediately upon finishing. The story was gripping, intriguing, entertaining....it felt like I was meandering through the most gorgeous language as the story unfolded. Being familiar with Hebrew (I'm not fluent by any means, but my conversational Hebrew is decent) I was shocked to find that this was a translation, and completely blown away by the translator's talent. Usually when I don't know how to say something in Hebrew, the word is some variation on a word I'm already familiar with, because it's a very structural and concrete language. There aren't many synonyms. The translator of this book is an absolute word master, and I can't imagine that the author was able to express the beautiful subtlety and radiance that the translation holds within, but I'm motivated to extend myself to give it a try and see how much talent in expression lays with the translator and how much with the author herself.
The content isn't entirely in line with my values and not the sort of thing I'd generally keep around for a novel's sake, but the beauty of this one ensures that I'll revisit it and relish it again in the future.

I like Hebrew, I do. But with this book there was something so unpleasant with every damn word. The way the language formed and the imagery used was so distasteful to me that it was really quite a chore reading it. Underneath it all it was an odd story about family, tinged with nostalgia. I don't have much connection to either and this story could not rouse it in me. I suppose it wasn't bad. I don't know.

Tja, er gebeurde veel wat wel boeide, maar ook weer zo veel was dat ik omkwam in al die kleine dingetjes. Het verhaalde en verhaalde maar door, van zijspoor naar zijspoor. Op het eind was ik de draad een beetje kwijt.
En: nogal wat irritante vertaal- of redactiefouten.

קראתי בנשימה עצורה. ספר משובח הן מבחינת העלילה והן מבחינת השפה. ביחוד אהבתי את הדימיון השזור במציאות. הנזיר המתואר בספר אכן חי ופעל ביפו והיה חובב נשים ידוע.

I found the start of this book really slow and a bit all over the place. It just seemed to drag on. The ending of the book was much better and redeemed the book somewhat for me.

עד המפגש עם כריסטודולוס, הייתי נותנת לספר 3 כוכבים. סאגה משפחתית, 3 דורות של נשים במשפחה של אישה יתומה שהיגרה למדינת ישראל טרם הקמתה. הסבתא שימחה, הבת נחמה ובתה המספרת שנקראת תמר אבל בפי סבתה שימחה - תמרה.
סיפורי ילדותה של תמרה ביפו של לפני הקמת המדינה, תחת השלטון הטורקי והאנגלי צבעוניים ומושפעים מסבותיה. סודות שנשים מחביאות מפני הילדה. ההיסטוריה משפחתית עלומה המוחבאת היטב בכדי להגן על נפשה הרכה. ותהליך מסירת ההיסטוריה בפרקים קטועים בימי הולדתה.
תיאור נשים חזקות עובדות תופרות, מבשלות ומחזיקות את הבית. תיאור היחסים עם השכנים הערבים. תיאור מערכת היחסים בין הסבתא הרוסיה שימחה, לסבתא הספרדיה אבולאפיה. כל אלה יוצקים ריחות וצבעים עשירים ומעוררים.
אבל משהו רע מאוד קורה לספר מהרגע של המפגש עם כריסטודולוס. מפגש מיותר לחלוטין. חלק שכל כך מנותק וחסר משמעות בספר. פורנוגרפיה זולה עטופה במילים יפות ואפילו לא טובה מספיק. ומילא זה, אבל כומר שגומל חסדים מיניים לחלוצות? איחס מה עלה בדעתה להדביק את הגיבורה, תמרה, לזנאי כזה בשם האלוהים.
רק לאלוהים פתרונים מדוע הספר הזה היה בראש רשימות רבי המכר של אותה התקופה. האם אלה תיאורי המשגלים של הנזיר והמספרת?
אני אסיים את הספר רק בכדי לראות עם יש בו עוד משהו אבל השליש האחרון פשוט זוועה קשה.
בעיקרון זה לא ספר גרוע. זה ספר שיכל להיות טוב אילולאי הסופרת בחרה להוליך את העלילה שאולה. בשליש האחרון, תמרה בניגוד לסבותיה, מתגלה כטיפוס קנאי, מעורער וחסר חוט שידרה. אפשר לוותר על כל השליש האחרון.

Het blijft een vertelling en wordt nergens literair. Er gebeurt te veel. Minder zou meer kunnen zijn bij dit boek.
