Thank you to Cherry publishing for an ebook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely enjoyed this!! Gave me a lot of Six of Crows at college vibes. I loved the little crew of misfits this centers. I only wish we had more female main characters. If this continues into a series maybe we can see that happen. It was pretty queer but still stuck in the binary. However I would die for Shohei.
Duante. The Protector. Even though his long hair, tattoos, and rebellious clothing scream delinquency in reality, he’s strong kind and loyal to a fault. A nightmare for bullies and a dream for the children he tutors.
Aquil. The Prodigy. He’s the top of his class, future class president, a national level violin player and son of one of the most influential men in the academic world.
Drayden. The golden boy. He’s ruthless smart and resourceful, the heir to one of the biggest business empires in the country.
Shohei. The celebrity. A gorgeous model with an extravagant fashion sense and lovable nature. He’s darling, delicate, and determined.
On the surface the kings have everything that one could possibly ask for. But when Dante’s past comes knocking, we get a look behind the curtain of this perfect façade. Virian, an untouchable criminal, and his men threaten to pull Duante back into the dark and muddy world of drug dealing that he fought so hard to escape from. Will Aquil’s smarts, Drayden’s resources and Shohei’s unconditional love be enough to get the Kings out of this mess, or will Duante have to return to his past life of misery and desperation? Will the path of gold that the Kings walk on prevail or will it crash and burn?
Thick and Thin is a story centering around love, friendship, and facing your fears.
Things I loved about the book:
The first thing that struck me about Thick and Thin was the diversity in the characters. Reading a YA romance novel where the main characters had different nationalities was like a breath of fresh air, one I didn’t even know I needed.
Talking about needing something, or someone in this case, watching Shohei pine endlessly for Duante, and Duante painstakingly discovering his own feelings was a journey filled with both second-hand embarrassment and high pitched squeals due to the cuteness overload.
Their friendship!! It was one which reminded me greatly of my friends – strong, pure and peppered (abundantly) with embarrassing and fun moments. Maybe that was why I was so drawn to their relationship. But whether you can relate to it or not, it’s one that will definitely touch your heart.
However, by far the most captivating part of this tale was Aquil’s firebug tendencies, something I still have unanswered questions about. My heart ached for him as he faced off against his pathetic excuse for parents, desperately clutching the cold metal of the lighter in an attempt to comfort himself.
The emotions were extremely well described and felt strangely raw and relatable. I felt myself go week at the knees every time Aquil or Drayden felt tired of their life or Dante sobbed uncontrollably.
The teen slang was actually accurate!! Relief, surprise, and happiness bloomed in me when I finally saw teenagers who were depicted like they had at least 1 braincell instead of the normal, incredibly stupid, vaguely human creatures.
However, that being said, I feel as if the story line surrounding the criminal underworld and the invulnerable drug lord, Virian, could have been better planned to make a more convincing tale. For a novel that greatly intertwined the romance and its darker elements, the plot line following Virian should have been better developed, to avoid the feeling of a lazy plot. Furthermore, the characterization felt rather two dimensional to me with majority of the story focusing on only a few select character traits.
All in all, it was an easy and comfortable read, much like a Wattpad book and by the end of it I was thoroughly invested in the characters.
