Nigel James, road pastor for Third Day, gives insight into the touring life of one of the top Christian rock bands--the excitement, the homesickness, the relentless schedule, the challenge to stay committed to God's purpose while on the road.
Nigel, with major contributions from Tai Anderson, Brad Avery, David Carr, Mark Lee, and Mac Powell, gives a real look at some of the trials each day brings. Just because they're members of a rock band on the road doesn't make them exempt from the realities of life. Also includes devotions James shared with the guys of Third Day, stories behind some of their songs, and memories from some of the many tours the guys have been on over the last few years.
This audio book will take you into the life of Third Day and open up to you amazing spiritual insights from Nigel James as he shares lessons from the road.
For the past eight years, Nigel James, a native of Cardiff, Wales, has been the road pastor for the Christian band Third Day. In the book Lessons From the Road, he provides insights into the band, its members, and answers a large number of questions about Third Day in the process. Mingled in with the behind-the-scenes information are various devotions and studies that James has done with the band over the years.
James' narrative is broken up by excerpts from blog postings of Third Day members, as well as answers to specific questions the band members have been asked. The men discuss things like: what inspired them to write certain songs, the writing process the band goes through, and how they deal with homesickness while on the road. With James' help, they also explore the subject of fame and how the band stays spiritually grounded when they are such a phenomenon.
I truly appreciated Lessons From the Road. It answered every question I had about the band, and gave some wonderful insights into the characters of Tai Anders, Brad Avery, David Carr, Mark Lee, and Mac Powell, the band members. Nigel James has a very friendly way of communicating; it almost feels like he is sitting down across from the reader having a conversation. And if you have ever wondered about the Christian authenticity of Third Day - do they practice what they preach? Then your questions will be answered here, with a resounding yes!
The pacing is very quick and most will be able to read the book rapidly. You can spend time with the devotions, looking up the Bible verses and applying the questions to your own life. The studies are insightful with personal application to every reader. This book would be a great gift for a worship pastor or worship leader/team member, and would also make a great addition to a church library. This fascinating book will appeal to a wide variety of readers and anyone who enjoys Christian music.
This book is intended for fans. It gives a brief history of the band, some insight into life on the road, a history of how Nigel started being their road pastor, some background on the guys as individuals, background on a few of the songs and some of the bible studies that Nigel has led while on tour.
It is not a real deep book and only is 4 hours long. But it is put together well. Nigel reads (which I always like) and the guys from Third Day read their own quotes and memories. It is a group effort. The production values are a little shaky. (There is one point when you can hear a door slamming a couple times, there is some other background noise and even though it is an mp3 file it still asks you to put in the next CD once an hour.)
But if you are a fan of Third Day (or Christian music in general) it is probably a decent four hour listen. Especially if you find it for $5.
