While on a working vacation in Jamaica, Detective Virgil Jones receives word of a horrific crime perpetrated by someone that the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Major Crimes Unit thought they had locked away for life. But when that person escapes custody, it sets off a chain of events that no one could have ever predicted. And in the midst of it all, one detective with the MCU will suffer a devastating loss that will change his life forever...
From the streets of Indianapolis and Chicago to the small island town of Lucea, Jamaica, Virgil Jones and the MCU do everything in their power to capture a group of criminals who hold little, if any, regard for human life. In doing so, they discover a killer hiding in plain sight, one who helps set the stage for Virgil and his team as they make their final play.

There is one thing that I really hate about this series, when the book that I'm reading ends. I have been hooked on this series since the first book, and I couldn't read them fast enough. Unfortunately, now I have to wait for each new release, but they're all well worth it! I absolutely love this series, the characters, humor, crazy antics, drama, mysteries, suspense, and the way that the characters have built an unconventional family that's always there for one another. It's certainly a must read for those who love the mystery/thriller genre. I really hope that there will be many, many more stories in the series!! I would definitely recommend this book, series, and exceptional author.
Whenever I read any book (but especially Thomas Scott's series of books entitled State Of........), I end up immersed in the story and push aside all else that I am thinking about at the time. I find myself drawn into the 'story' and am trying to 'solve' the puzzle using the 'clues' that are there. I've gotten myself entangled in this series and am now wondering what happens when I finish with the next two books (I'll start #17 next & then #18 after that) and what then, Thomas Scott ?? Can you answer that for me ?? Regardless, I'm about to start the next one !! I recommend to ALL to read T.S.'s State Of Play book next, you will really enjoy it !!
This is a good mix of Jamaica and Indiana settings and an interesting mystery plus some character changes. Like the other books of the series Scott lays out the plot/story with foreshadowing and plenty of misdirection then the action and suspense take off the BANG! you're at the end. Another good story with Murt and Virgil plus the growing cast of characters at the MCU and the homestead where Mason Jones Cross sits by the pond. If you like action mysteries mixed with tech and plenty of family and friends then you need to read this book.
I really like the characters in the Virgil Jones series and how he’s made them all a “family”. I always find myself wondering what information I’m missing when I see the story unfolding. I know there is going to some kind of plot twist or unexpected event that takes the story to a whole new level.
Once again Virgil and his trusty side kicks kick some criminal butt! I hated that someone special died, but like always they will get through the tragedy together.. Lots of twists as usual, but everything came together at the end.
Thomas Scott excels on the ability to link series’s to each other. Play continues the saga of Virgil and his adventures as a director of crime in Indiana. Lots of action , twists and turns. Greed read.
I have read all of the Virgil Jones books up to this one. Will be reading the next two this week. I love these books! Fun and great stories. If you haven't read this series start now! You'll be glad you did!!
OMG! 75 PAGES IN AND I'M JUST SICK OF EVERYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED. TALKING OUT LOUD TO MY KINDLE. WELL, I GOT THROUGH THE GOOD AND BAD AGAIN. I REALLY HATE THE BAD BUT ITS PART OF LIFE. I DO LOVE THIS SERIES. ;D
Start with the first book in the series and don't stop. They just get better as you get to know the players. Stanford's Lucas Davenport has nothing on Virgil Jones.
