Curtis Owens is a world-renowned chef and now, apparently, next of kin. The world respects a self-made man. With a successful New York City restaurant, a Michelin Star and a James Beard award under his belt, Curtis is the very definition. Defying his childhood, he’s risen to the top of his field by designing a life that is structured and ordered with no surprises. Until he opens an email that rocks his world. Megan Dunne has never met a spreadsheet she didn’t like. Which is how she ended up with her business partner and occasional ‘friends with benefits’ in this sleepy midwestern town. About to open a second location in LA, she needs Curtis close to keep their grand opening plans running smoothly. That’s the reason why, when Curtis announced his trip to Minnesota to settle the affairs of his estranged father, she boarded the plane with him. Isn’t it? Curtis’ plan is meet with the lawyer, sign a few documents, and be back in Brooklyn before his kitchen staff notices he’s gone. But as he and Megan sort through his father’s house and business, they are swept into a deeply emotional journey that makes both of them wonder if they’ve been playing by all the wrong rules. Will following their hearts be a blueprint for disaster or is it the perfect plan?
Annmarie Boyle, author of the award-winning Storyhill series, is an unapologetic believer in the transformative power of love, friendship, and enduring bonds. Known for writing relatable characters, witty dialogue and engaging interaction, Annmarie weaves together stories that make you laugh, think a little, and occasionally shed a tear.
Outside of writing, she can be found on a quest for the perfect vanilla oat milk latte or the most decadent coffee-flavored cupcake. She’s also a sucker for a good interior design show, so if you find a touch of “home make-over” vibes sneaking into her stories, now you know why!
Ultimately, it is her wish that every turn of the page brings a new adventure and every story is a passport into a world where grace is found in struggle, and love always prevails.
I really enjoyed in this book. Due to story description I prepared for tears and sad story but author managed to deliver it on positive note.
Here we meet Curtis (who is Grace's best friend- we meet Grace in book "Love me like a love song") who receives bad news about his estranged father passing. Curtis comes back to home town for paper work and looking for answers why did his father ignore him after mother's death.
Curtis has a business partner (and occasional lover) Megan who volunteers to accompany him on his trip. They have strong feelings to each other but they are afraid to admit that and continue their platonic relationship.
Will Curtis get his answers? Will Megan finally believe they can be more than partners in business? ________ Like I said, I really liked the story, it was fun reading about Grace and Andrew too and author promises to show Curtis in her next works too.
The story Curtis and Megan have been business partners, friends with benefits and secretly in love with each other for the last six years. It takes chef Curtis losing his estranged father to force him back to his hometown. There, he finds out what his father to everyone else, even though his father distanced himself from Curtis when his mother died. It also forces Curtis to finally admit to Megan how he feels about her. Can she reciprocate?
My thoughts Curtis is Grace, from the first book in the series, best friend, and we first meet him there. It’s super getting to understand him better, and his unusual relationship with his partner Megan. I enjoyed the dual perspectives of both characters, and how their sad backgrounds had shaped them. I enjoyed this story, although the ending wrapped up so quickly, I would have liked this to be a full-length, fleshed out story. ❤️
I wish this had been a full length novel instead of a novella. There’s so much going on — parental loss, parental neglect, fear of repeating a parent’s mistakes, a long-term colleagues with benefits agreement — that I don’t think a novella did it all justice.
