Claire Barclay, owner of a mystery book tour company, collects three women at the Manchester airport who have flown in from Tucson, Arizona, then starts on a tour of Yorkshire and the sites of mystery novels. She meets the rest of the tour in two British couples and Phillip, a single man. Claire has scheduled stops at sites of interest, starting with the York Chocolate Factory. Here, in pursuit of Phillip who will not stick with the tour, she finds the body of a security guard. She cannot see any connection with her tour and leaves York, driving the group up on the moors and stopping at the famous Ralph's Cross where moorland stretches for miles. Here, her American ladies report the sudden death of Phillip in the surrounding bog. Detective Inspector Mark Evans, a friend of Phillip's and Claire's significant other, investigates. Mark tells her Phillip worked for Scotland Yard and was on the trail of a drug distribution scheme. Claire is determined her Tucson ladies will not be dragged into the murder inquiry or any other police investigation, but they are determined they will. They are intelligent, expert mystery novel readers and observant. They precipitate Claire and themselves into a confrontation with the murderer.
Perils in Yorkshire is an entertaining cozy mystery. It's the third book in the British Mystery Book Tours series. In the series, Claire Berkeley runs a mystery book tour company. She takes small groups to different locations where mystery books have been set. She also takes them to interesting and historic places around the areas they are visiting. This time the tour is in the Yorkshire area. And, the tourists get more mystery than they bargained for.
This is the second book that I have read from this series. I read Crime in Cornwall last year, and it was such a delightful cozy mystery. Needless to say, I was very excited to read Perils in Yorkshire. It is also a very charming cozy. Though I enjoyed it very much, it took me a bit longer to get through this one. The author gives very detailed descriptions of the areas she takes the tourists to visit. This is wonderful for those of us who long to visit England but cannot. I've always wanted to go on a small group tour like Claire leads in the book. Maybe someday.
The characters in Perils in Yorkshire are quite an eclectic group. Three older ladies from Tucson, two couples and a single male traveler make up the group. The interactions among the group are entertaining, especially those among the three Tuscon women.
When the murder occurs, you will find that many of the characters could be the killer. With the hints that the author scatters throughout the book, you should be able to figure out what the motive for the murder is before you figure out who the killer is.
You can easily read Perils in Yorkshire without having read the prior books. The author gives you enough information to figure out the backgrounds of the main characters as well as their personalities.
If you enjoy reading cozy mystery books that are very descriptive, have interesting and eclectic characters, and transport you to the book's location, you'll really enjoy Perils in Yorkshire.
Claire’s literary-themed tour is anything but what she expects when a security guard at a chocolate factory ends up murdered. Is one of her tourists to blame? Claire can’t help but suspect them and has to work to find out if her tour is the reason a man is dead!
I found this book to be a pleasant, light read. The prose is easy to digest and understand. The characters are well-developed and interesting. The subplots involving the characters lives are not a distraction since it’s easy to like the characters and get wrapped up in their world even beyond the mystery. The author did a nice job of tying together some of the different, seemingly unrelated pieces in the end, too!
The plot moves a bit more slowly because the author takes a lot of time and care to develop the setting. If you’re an armchair travel enthusiast, you’ll love all the work the author has put in to craft and describe the various tourist sites! Also, she ties it back to literary works!
This is my first read in this series and I had no trouble picking up who was who and becoming involved in the story. It was an engaging and pleasing read.
Overall, the book was enjoyable, and I would recommend it.
Love the way this author pulls together a mystery -- a bit on the edgy side for a cozy series but not too over the top. More brutally honest, addressing ills of the world kind of thing. Very well done and thought provoking.
Claire's back with another literary tour - this time taking an eclectic mix of American and British tourists on a trek through Yorkshire. Lots of wonderfully vivid descriptions of geography, history and local lore. Culinary tidbits too. Made me feel like I was right there experiencing it all first hand. The mystery is seamlessly blended in and Claire has her hands full with her eager mystery readers' curiosity. Plus there's a lovely progression on the romance front so I am one happy reader...well listener. Eager to dive into the fourth British Booktour Mysteries book soon.
This was another enjoyable book in the British Book Tour Mysteries Series. One of my favorite things about this series is that the author includes so much history and physical descriptions of the settings that it almost feels like a travelogue. It makes me want to go on one of these tours! The characters are well-developed and the plot is easy to follow. The murder(s) are not gruesome, and the "who-done-it" aspect of the story adds flavor to the subplots.
The narrator of this audio version is excellent.
Clean Readers: There are a handful of expletives (but no "eff" bombs). The main character and her boyfriend obviously have a sexual relationship because their intimate times together are mentioned. But there are no descriptions of their closed-door activities.
Good paced book with interesting characters and plot. Liked that bullying in schools was introduced. Also options to solve the dilemma for the abused child. Illegal drug distribution is a major issue in many parts f the world and woven into the storyline in a real way.
Multiple mysteries wrapped up into one amazing story. I love getting authors and series names from the discussions among the tourists, too. Thank you to ACL for ordering more of this series.
2.5 🌟 This one moved a lot slower than the others, and the mystery was way too easy to guess!! There seemed to be a lot of superfluous content to wade through as well…
Another excellent book in the series. The story picked up for me after the second murder. Again, the theme of drugs played a large part in the overall mystery, and it was handled with care and respect. Again, I loved how Claire's family and personal life grows in every book. I did miss the dog not being around this time.
