BLURB Matt Akang had been killed in a boating explosion, at least, that was the official report released by the Nigerian Navy. No one mentioned the robbery he'd planned and carried out with three other officers, also declared dead. No one mentioned the huge amount of money carted away that night. Ten years later, Matt Eben resurfaced to save his twin brother's life. However, returning to being a ghost became difficult, especially when he met voluptuous beauty, Jane Ituen. With snarky Jane in trouble and in need of a pretend fiancé ASAP, Matt offers himself but insists the marriage must be real. The couple are happy even though Matt has a looming dark secret. Everything is unbelievably blissful until someone from Matt's past shows up for retribution.
Emem Bassey loves romance in all its forms. She writes what she terms a hybrid romance - love stories with bits and pieces of other genres. All her stories carry plus size heroines and she staunchly believes the world is filled with tragedy, so she writes to entertain and lighten hearts. Emem lives at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and is basically a ghost to her neighbors.
3.5 Stars. This was a really good addition to the Retired Navy Men series. It’s also sort of linked to the final book in the Age is No Bother series, being that it features the black sheep twin brother of the hero there. Anyway, I was really excited to check this out and to have the opportunity to read it early, having won an advanced copy from the author. Even though it’s linked to at least 2 previous books, this book stands on its own pretty well and doesn’t require having read the aforementioned books first, although it is like revisiting old friends if you have read those books.
The premise of this is that years ago, Navy Officer, Matt, “Robin Hooded” a crime boss along with some of his team mates, and following a series of unfortunate events had to fake his own death. Now years later, he resurfaced to rescue his twin and met and was instantly attracted to plus size lingerie and adult toy entrepreneur, Jane. Unfortunately, enemies from his past pop back in to ruin any potential happiness he might have had.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It felt like a novella to me, not only in terms of length, but also in terms the fact that it was missing some of the complexity, story and build up of the first book in the series, even though it was really well executed if a little lightweight, plot-wise. This was a pretty quick read. There is limited angst between Matt and Jane and what little there is, more or less takes place in the past tense or a little bit in the resolution of this book. I liked that this was super straightforward and mostly focused on the sexual relationship between Matt and Jane, although I would have appreciated seeing what exactly made them so gone over each other.
There was a really interesting theme for both protagonists about complex relationships with family. I think this was a really interesting nugget introduced that wasn’t really explored. I wondered a lot about the whys. Why was Matt such a 💩-y kid, what was going on in his head, what was he reacting to? And then also the why and how of Jane’s parents treating their ONLY child the way they did. These aren’t necessarily answerable questions, but I think they were really interesting subjects in the story that I was interested in seeing explored a bit more if it was a complete novel. For me, I wish there had been a teeny bit more conflict woven in with Jane and her parents and whatever closure could have come from that, or even had a bit more build with intrigue and sabotage and mystery leading up to the climax of the story, or perhaps more about Matt and Jane’s development as a couple and seeing and overcoming their initial angst towards each other. That said, those things might have been too much for a novella. I think the simplicity of this story worked really well with this length of book and made this a really soothing and relaxing read. The last book had a lot of editing/proofing teething issues, but this was perfectly finished and it was a real joy to read. Can’t wait for the next book in this series.
This is the second book in the Retired Navy Men series and is also linked to the Age is no Bother series. But this can be read as a standalone. Matt is a man on the track to redeem himself from a life of assholery. Basically, a repentant ex-douchebag. He is making amends to his twin brother who he treated abhorrently in the past. When he finds he’s falling for Jane, he goes all out to prove that he will always be there for her too. When Jane needs a pretend husband, he steps up to the plate in the hope of making it forever. But is Jane ready to give up her heart? Love the way Matt went to bat for Jane with her parents. You can't help but forgive his past actions. An engaging and steamy read. Enjoyment: 💖💖💖💖 Angst level: 😩😩 Heat level: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Jane has all her life done her parents’ bidding until she didn’t. She’s a graduate with a choppy past and believes no one with all that shade will accept her, especially Matt Attang who makes her burn with a special kind of desire.
Matt Akang, on the other hand, has returned from the dead to save his twin brother and is certain that the plus-sized beauty that trips his heart may not be his happily ever after if she discovers his secret.
There's a subtle thriller vibe to this book though I would have loved more.
I loved Matt and Jane's story. Like Ours had me hooked from the start. This is another great series from Emem Bassey that I would definitely recommend reading. I'm loving this series!!
