A terrorist attack on Parliament plunges the country on to a destructive path. Jim just wants his discharge from the Army and return to his life in academia. He returns from military service to find a country in chaos and a new regime bent on blaming everything on citizens with foreign heritage like him and his wife, Annabel. She just wants to practise her music and live in a house in the country but with no-one lending to those with foreign heritage, the chance of building on the land they bought is impossible and it is confiscated by the new regime. When they are evicted they find themselves and their daughter in a struggle for survival. Can they survive long enough to witness the end of the regime or will they become victims of hatred? Hatred is the first book in M J Dees' new dystopian series, Collapse .

This is not just another book set in a dystopian world. Rather it’s the story of prejudice towards anyone that is made a target by those in power. The elements of a good read are all here and added together in the proper ratios. The characters slowly develop and grow together as three dimensional players. The world building is chilling and creates a natural stage for the players in this story. The plot seems familiar but it contains enough twists and turns to be unpredictable. These ingredients create a book that reminds me of the works of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book even though it differs from my usual fare of sci-fi. I recommend it to all readers it’s a particularly poignant story for our times.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

It isn't scary by todays standard of in your face scary or gory, more like the classic creep up on you or thought provoking scary. With what's going on in the world today this book has a prophetic feeling to it and it seems it can take place in any country. Political, race and class division. It's a very good read that will get your brain working in "what if" scenarios, no scratch that "when it happens" scenarios. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I couldn't really get a feel for the characters, they seemed a bit flat I would have liked to hear more about them as to their personalities and physical description. Also what happened to Magennis was heartbreaking and made me cry :( . Now I am going to get a hold of a real estate agent to see about purchasing a cabin in the mountains with solar panels and eagerly await book 2!

A scarily possible dystopian future, obviously based on 1930's Germany, it shows how easily to could happen as it has before if fear and prejudice take over. Well written and thoughtful if bleak story, that shows a little of man's humanity in the face of adversity great strong lead characters. I will be interested to see how this story develops as this book finishes 7 years before the collapse. I am not sure what worse can happen. I received a complimentary copy from the author and am leaving a honest voluntary review
