Alan Bayle’s Mirror Wars: Double Jeopardy is a terrific sci-fi mystery! I am so excited that this is a series and can’t wait for the next instalment. The premise is familiar and yet fresh. Fans of the Star Trek Mirror Universe or the short-lived, albeit excellent show Counterpart will highly enjoy this book.
WW2 scientists doing weird scientist stuff accidentally open a portal to another universe, but what they awaken is a shrewd and merciless empire hellbent on manipulating this side. As the bodies begin to pile, it’s up to a local police force to get to the bottom of this paranormal mystery. Filled with realistic and well-crafted characters and mind-bending science, this book is primed and ready to deliver thrills.

A New Take on an underused concept.

Mirror Mirror is one of Star Trek TOS most famous episodes, yet the concept of mirror universes is one I consider underused. Alan Bayles makes good use of it here, building an engrossing alternate world on the fly while keeping us grounded in the real world. Realistic fight scenes, characters you feel for, and an ending that sets up the series well for a sequel. Looking forward to the next one.

Amazing, Great mix of SciFi and Mystery

It’s an exciting and complex story that mixes a murder mystery with science fiction. The main character is Detective Inspector Dave Barnes. He's a police officer who is used to dealing with difficult cases. But this time, the case is different and takes him on a strange journey.

The story starts in a small town in the north of England. At first, it seems like a typical murder case. But soon, Detective Barnes meets Professor Claire Tulley. She knows a lot about history and tells him about weird experiments and other worlds. This changes everything.

As Detective Barnes investigates, he learns about a place that is just like Earth but different. There, he has a double, a man who looks just like him but is a soldier, Colonel David Barnes. This other Barnes doesn't like Detective Barnes and wants to stop him from finding out the truth.

The story is not just about finding the killer. It's also about Detective Barnes figuring out who he can trust. He learns that some people are not who they seem. He also has to deal with the idea that there is another world and another him.

The book has a lot of twists and turns. It keeps you guessing what will happen next. It also makes you think about big questions like what makes you, you and how your choices matter.

Bottom line:
Detective Barnes has to face many challenges. He fights to solve the case and protect his world. The story is exciting and makes you think. It is a good read for anyone who likes mysteries and stories about other worlds.

"Mirror Wars: Double Jeopardy" is a Science fiction penned by the author Alan Bayles. Story is set in Langley Park, Durham, England. On 12 Sep 1932, a failed experiment opened the doorway to a parallel world.

Many years later, in one of the house in Langley Park, Sally saw her husband Michael and son Tommy's bodies. She screamed after seeing that horrible view. On hearing her screams, her neighbors rushed around her house and called the paramedics and investigating team. Detective Inspector Dave Barnes received a call to investigate the murder. His friend Detective Sergeant Andrew Jenkins also joined him for the investigation. Cooper also worked on the case along with.

As the story progresses, the officers got to know about the corrupt echelons of the British Government. Grab a copy of this novel and find out what happens next. Story is intriguing and kept me on the edge while reading. Pace of the story is fine and I didn't feel bored anytime while reading it. Author's writing style is interesting. If you love reading stories involving mystery, scifi then this would be a perfect pick for you.

Inspector Dave Barnes investigates a strange double homicide which is later connected to a bizarre series of events that began with a failed military experiment 90 years earlier. A parallel world is linked to Barnes' world through portals opened through mirrors. A world where the Roman Empire continued its dominance and wishes to extend its brutal control. I had some difficulty with the style of writing, but the story is intriguing with explanations for many of today's current events. If you like fast-paced action with classic scifi themes like AI, cyborgs, and parallel universes, you will enjoy Double Jeopardy.

‘Double Jeopardy’ is a brilliant multi-genre thriller that was a real page-turner! It’s a combination of sci-fi and crime fiction and it was a brilliant mix. I was engrossed from the start and was fully invested in the characters. If you are a fan of sci-fi and have watched the Loki series you will pick up the ideas in this book very quickly and run with them. But if you are new to the genre it has been explained plainly and clearly so the ideas and concepts are easy to understand.

When the bodies of a father and son are found, DI Dave Barnes and his team are called to investigate. What they find is a confusing scene and as they investigate further the answers that they find are totally mind-shattering. When Professor Claire Tulley gets in touch offering to give them some answers that's when things begin to get even weirder. Answers are hard to come by but they traverse decades and begin with the failed experiment during the Second World War.

There is a pretty extensive cast of characters but once you get a grip on them you soon take them into your hearts. Well, the good guys at least! Dave, Claire, Wendy and Andy form a brilliant investigative force - they never give up on trying to find answers even when they terrify them. Especially Claire! But they are also nuanced characters and I couldn't help feeling empathy for even some of the bad guys as they are a reflection of their society and culture.

As the narrative progresses it moves into more of the sci-fi aspects and although these concepts have been explored before in the genre the author does present them in a unique and exciting way. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

Let me know if you pick this one up!

Thrilling SciFi Adventure

Wow.This book grabbed me by the hand and pulled me through a wild, thrilling adventure from start to finish. And, if you say that you knew early what was going to happen in this one - I'm gonna call you a liar. But maybe you're just more knowledgeable about science fiction than me. Sci-fi isn't my top genre, but it is one I enjoy - and this book absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR list. And, preferably sooner than later! If you need an escape from the current political climate. Well, maybe not that.

But it will offer you an adventurous romp through some pretty fantastical notions that will keep you wondering for the entirety of the book! It's a pretty extensive cast of characters, and I'll admit that I did get confused some. The whole doppelganger thing exacerbates that. It's somewhat easy to separate the doppelgangers from each other, but doubling up characters means that it gets even messier and more complex after a while! I did love the main cast of characters on what I considered the good side - but who knows? Maybe you'll consider parallel Earth the good side. Maybe you're a doppelganger. Maybe I am.

And that ending, well, that was something I wasn't expecting. I'm not going to give anything away, but I had chills for a few minutes. I might be getting them again writing this.

This one isn't listed as horror - just thriller, but my scaredy cat meter and I think it edges just onto the horror side. I mean, sometimes I still get chills in the mirror from Bloody Mary. So, yeah. mildly horrific. It just depends on your tolerance.

But I'm trying to stretch myself this year, and I'm absolutely still picking up the next one and probably tearing through it as well. Can't wait to dig in!

Double Jeopardy by Alan Bayles.
Mirror Wars Book 1.
I loved the cover and blurb. What a start to the book. I was hooked from page one. I did like doppelgänger part. I liked Barnes. I read this in two sittings. It was completely different to how I thought it was. I loved the mix between mystery and science fiction. I loved the eyes at the start of each chapter. Omg. I can't wait for the next book. Definitely recommend.

Ooooh boy. Where do I start? As you might have seen on X, this book has something to do with mirrors and reflections, just not in the way you might have thought. Or maybe you have already guessed it. 😉

Now, how to continue without spoiling anything for you.

One of the first scenes actually ran chills down my spine.
I was tempted to chew the Shellac off my thumb.
I did not know much yet as it was the beginning of the book, it still has stuck with me. If you have read ‘Double Jeopardy’ already, you might know the scene I am referring to.

We follow Inspector Andy, often called ‘Guv’ by his team. I quite like Andy. He seems intelligent and caring, trying to protect the ones around him. He has the cutest dog named Jenny.

There is a double murder, Andy, Dave, and one of the officers who were the first responders, start to investigate.
For some reason, they are told, from higher up the ranks, to stop investigating. Then cue, the sweet, sweet Claire, who has done research on her own.

As the plot thickens, they all fight for their lives, will they make it? Will they figure out what is going on?

All the way, there is something in the back of my head saying, "Hold on, this can not be right?". There is something off in this scene, but I was still not able to quiiiite get it all right. Even though I thought I knew where the book would go, it actually took a different turn. Who is the enemy here?

Double Jeopardy is Book 1 of the Mirror Wars Series.

The story unfolds with a failed experiment 90 years earlier on Earth and a parallel Earth/universe, accessible via mirrors!

This is a very unique story and, at times, a little creepy - is the person staring back at you in the mirror, actually you?

While I do enjoy Science Fiction, it isn't my go-to genre so I did find this book harder to get into than usual but there's also a great deal going on which when I got my head around, I enjoyed!

The format of the story is split between the 2 worlds, so to speak - Earth and Parallel Earth - and as you read, you need to be mindful of this.

It is an utterly fascinating concept and really makes you think - maybe a little too much!

"Double Jeopardy" is a sci-fi action thriller by author Alan Bayles. I really like the concept of alternate (mirrored) universes and this book did not disappoint in delivering a satisfying version of the concept. The story begins with an investigative team coming together to try and solve a brutal father/son murder, and escalates the action in every chapter that follows. Readers may never look at mirrors the same way again. There were some editing issues (at least in the e-book version of the book) but they didn't deter me from the solid plot of the storyline. Recommended for fans of both science fiction and/or thrillers.

‘Double Jeopardy’ is the first book in the Mirror Wars series and it’s an exciting and at times, creepy science fiction story. Who hasn’t walked past a mirror and thought they saw something not quite right out of the corner of their eye? In Double Jeopardy the mirror leads to another universe and a world where the scientists are trying to control and kill people.

This is a familiar concept told in an engaging and interesting way. I liked the main characters especially Wendy Cooper and the story is a good mixture of murder mystery and science fiction. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This is a fast-paced science fiction thriller, packed with surprises, suspense, and action. Made with diverse elements from the genre, including parallel universes, doppelgangers, cyborgs, nanobots, conspiracy theories, hunters, portals, and even COVID 19. It has everything! Find how the story is inspired by Stranger Things, Predator, Alien, Space Odyssey, Back to Future, The Da Vinci Code, and many more. I haven't finished it yet, but surely will soon, as it's a page-turner. Recommended!

What a book. I was gifted this as I had signed up to review the second in the series. You definitely need to read this first as it explains and sets everything up I think. Brilliant story line that is very believable and that ending is just...wow shivers down the spine. I was gutted when I realised I left the second book at home but ecstatic that I have my kindle with it on 😁 So straight onto the next one, so glad I booked annual leave tomorrow

Double Jeopardy is the first book in Alan Bayles’ Mirror Wars series and this science fiction thriller is one book you’re not going to want to miss. What if your reflection was watching you? What if it was plotting to take life as you know it away from you? What would you do? Would you fight? This thrilling novel asks these very questions and digs deeper as the characters find themselves plagued with a danger that threatens everything they know.

Double Jeopardy is the first book that I have read by this author, and I am already eager for book two. I have to know what happens next! This book is written in the third person and doesn’t focus on just one character. You get a nice variety of characters who guide you through the story and keep you on the edge of your seat. Take note that this book is written in British English, so there will be noticeable differences in wordage usage and spelling.

The prologue is set in the past and is quick to grab my attention and hold me riveted to the story. Setting the stage with intrigue, mystery, and danger. The author plucks some familiar names from that particular time period to amplify the dangers of the situation being painted upon the pages. The specific time period focused on, the faked death of a character, and the secrecy surrounding everything transpiring is gripping. At the end of this first chapter, I literally had tears in my eyes. The prologue honestly promises to grab you by the eyeballs and drag you into the book. Once you start you’re not going to want to put it down.

Alan Bayles
As this book shifts forward to the present day it seems to move forward innocently enough. Do not believe it. Don’t be lulled into the false sense of security and calm the author wants to lure you into! Don’t do it! I fell for that trick and by the end of the chapter my jaw was literally on the floor, my eyes were bugging out of my head, and I was in pure shock. If you’re guessing that I immediately dove right back in to find out what exactly is going on, you’d be 100% correct!

While this book is packed with mystery, danger, and other dark elements, I appreciate that the author sprinkles in humor to lighten the mood a little. Don’t worry. It’s not lightened too much, but just enough to keep the story from sinking into impenetrable darkness where no light can ever penetrate.

Page by page the author builds scenes of calm and then moves in to smack you in the face with danger and drama. The twists keep you on edge as you just don’t know what is going to happen next.

When I first started reading this book and Inspector Barnes was introduced I was so sure that the story was going to focus on him. So, you can imagine my surprise when the author takes a different tract. I was literally thinking “Wait! Where are we going?? Barnes is over there…” I can imagine the author shushing me and telling me simply “Just pay attention. You’re not going to want to miss this upcoming twist.” Inspector Dave Barnes is one of the main characters of this novel, but the author keeps things interesting with the variety of characters the author allows to shine when Inspector Barnes is off doing other things. It all connects to create an intriguing story as Barnes and his fellow officers work the case to figure out who or what committed these heinous crimes. There is one character that I quickly begin to question not just their motives, but who it is that they are working for. How are they connected to what is going on? What do they know? My eagerness for answers drives me to continue reading.

Trust me when I say that this book is packed with mystery, intrigue, and edge-of-your-seat thrills. My eyes are probably going to need to be checked with as many times they bugged out of my head reading this book. There are particular scenes that are dark on their own, but the author doesn’t stop with the expected. No, the author takes things a step further with the full intent of leaving readers horrified and shaken. Being a fan of horror – I absolutely LOVED it! I love it when an author keeps me on my toes and takes me down the road of the unexpected.

My favorite line of the story – “He is like a tornado; whenever he appears people just clear out of his way!” This line literally made me snicker. But it honestly makes it more understandable as to why this particular character is unlikable. I mean, honestly, who wants to be in the path of a tornado? Especially one that has a habit of looking down on people in a condescending way?

One of my favorite things about this book, besides the thriller/horror aspect is the characters. You can easily envision these characters being real. You can almost envision going to the place where they live and being able to interact with them as they come together to find answers to this horrific tragedy that seemingly has no end. I feel nothing but empathy for Inspector Barnes when he has to deal with one particular character. I’m pretty sure I pursed my lips so hard I looked like I had been sucking a lemon for an hour I was so irritated with that man. LOL! I want to complain about this particular character’s tactics in the handling of things, but once again the author has a method to their madness and the explanation comes along in its due course.

The overall storyline is well done, but when it gets around the middle of the book things get a bit rushed and jumbled. The characters feel a bit off-kilter especially when it comes to their reactions. It feels like they are being pushed in a less natural direction in how one would expect to react in certain situations. When a couple characters start talking about their favorite subject things go off the rails a bit. It becomes a bit hard to follow what they are talking about. They seem to become a bit all over the place. But once that patch is passed things smooth out and the story goes back to flowing along nicely. I will say this – there is politics mixed into this story. Not everyone will like it as some will view it as the author taking an opportunity to voice their personal biases into the story. I’ll admit that I thought this to an extent and wasn’t too keen on it, but it serves a purpose. The mention of politics hints at a particular individual in specific I mean. Since it’s mentioned in passing and not overly focused on I’m willing to let it slide as it’s one small piece in a bigger picture. I’d recommend that next time though the author pick more than just one “unfavorable” individual to speak of and not just one they might personally hold a targeted dislike towards.

Grab your copy now
Overall this book takes things in a direction I had no way of seeing coming. I at one point began to wonder – where exactly are things going? Who’s really in charge? Patience. These questions will be answered, and it comes in a form I didn’t see coming – not by many miles. If you’re not a fan of cliffhangers, you’re going to be a bit annoyed with this book. Sorry, but there is a cliffhanger and I’m here for it. But regardless I’m willing to bet that the ending is going to send a shiver up your spine. Cue sinister smile. LOL! The author’s attention to detail, the mystery, and the drama make this sci-fi conspiracy thriller novel a must-read if you’re a fan of the genre.

Pros:
Page-turner of a novel
Lots of intrigue and mystery
Edge of your seat thriller
Observant characters throughout, not just the police officers.
The twists!! THE TWISTS!!!!

Cons:
Drive to push two characters together romantically is rushed. While things do back off, the initial push is really unnecessary.
Having characters react in a way opposite way to what they normally would have reacted. The scene would have played out better with more natural/realistic reactions.
Lesson of the book: Don’t doubt your instincts, always stay alert, and beware mirrors. Trusting your instincts just might save your life.

Cover Score: 8.9
Book Score: 8.9

This was one heck of a read. The story was fast paced and didn’t give you a chance to get bored! Although there were some places I would have liked to delve into things just a little more it wasn’t too much that detracted from my enjoyment of reading. This story was full of action, suspense, twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. If you’ve ever gotten that eerie feeling that there’s more than just your reflection looking back at you in the mirror, this book gives you a reason to think a little harder about it!

We follow Detective Inspector David Barnes as he discovers a strange sequence of events following a gruesome murder and as he follows his instincts into uncovering just what has been going on for well over 80 years he finds out that things are never what they seem and even people can be completely different as if they’ve been replaced by a totally different person!

In an alternate reality we see Colonel Barnes, a ruthless soldier who doesn’t let much stand in his way, even if it happens to be another person. He finds his doppelgänger a source of frustration and one that he’d rather be rid of, but finds out that the more dangerous hazard is the dangerous and calculating superior officer, General Cooper who always seems to be a few steps ahead.

As both worlds clash, not only do we see how the same person could turn out so differently if they happened to be raised in different worlds, but also just how hard someone will fight for their beliefs. Yet there’s always someone else just behind the scenes pulling the strings. With an ending that leaves you wanting for more, I can’t wait to get my hands on the next in the series.

Here is my review for Double Jeopardy by Alan Bayles

This book is a terrific read. It’s a great science fiction story with the idea of a parallel Earth and doppelgangers plotting against each other. This is a great use of the author’s imagination. I liked the premise of the story and enjoyed the characters, especially DI Dave Barnes and DS Andy Jenkins, his sidekick. They worked well together. The story was well written with some historical factors in there, so perhaps some research has been done by the author prior to the writing of this book. Also, I like the fact that murder is involved in the story and the ME is stumped by something that comes up in the postmortem. I’m really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Umm this book was absolutely incredible and I was hooked from the beginning. I loved this was a sci fi thriller. I'm not sure l've read anything like this before.
Especially since I'm still pretty new to the sci-fi world.
It's not a top read for me but it's becoming on for sure.
I had never read sci fi before I joined LBT but now that I have opened that door I won't close it ever !!!
This book was just so well written especially because It had 2 different worlds or universes and it so cool and so well done. It flowed so nicely I had no issue following this story well until you add in a doppelgänger then it gets messy but in a good way. I felt like this would be a book I could listen to on audio book and really get the whole picture of everyone and everything.
That ending umm what was that? I didn't see that ending the way it did. I think I'm still in shock and I need more asap. This book I feel like would be so good listening tool it eek I can't wait for the next book in this series !!

This is a hugely enjoyable sci fi novel. The author takes an intriguing premise - what if your reflection was conspiring against you? - and builds it into a gripping tale of worlds colliding, mirrors as gateways to another dimension and danger around every corner.

It's a great mix of Quatermass-influenced dark sci fi with a touch of horror and suspense, full of secret labs and shocking revelations. It gets extra points from me because I grew up in north east England and recognised a lot of the locations and characters. But anyone who likes intense science fiction will enjoy this.

It took me a while to get into this however once I had hit the 75 page mark I was unable to put it down. It was such an interesting concept for a Sci-fi which I personally had not read before and I think this was the thing that hooked me. I enjoyed that author had diverse and dynamic characters which were adapting to the storyline and not the other way round. This meant that during the 'investigation' scene things flowed better and made the whole thing so much more enjoyable to read. I can not wait to read the sequel.

What an introduction to the mirror wars! I’m so glad I picked up the start to this adventure. The book was very well written and certainly left you wanting more from the next one (which I already have ready!). Dave was a great character and I enjoyed following the story with him and his doppelgänger as it made the whole “fight” more personal. I’m not sure I will be completely comfortable looking in a mirror for a while though - haha!

Great Read

In Double Jeopardy, Detective Inspector Barnes investigates a brutal murder that unravels into a mind-bending conspiracy involving alternate realities. The suspense builds as parallel Earths collide, revealing a dangerous doppelganger with sinister motives. A gripping blend of crime a and sci find with unexpected twists. I loved the added little touch at the end of the book.

A crime investigation that unexpectedly unveils a conspiracy from a different world. Wonderful.

Another fun, fast-paced adventure—except this time a blend of sci-fi and horror. Dark sci-fi is very close to my heart, so when I saw the intriguing premise of Double Jeopardy teased in the author’s posts on Threads, I knew I had to try this book out. And what a thrilling ride it has been!

An arrogant scientist, in his hubris, opens a portal into another universe. Not quite prepared for what awaits on the other side. Is this trope done too many times? Maybe. Will I ever get tired of it? Of course not. And, even if you have come across similar themes in Star Trek etc. take my word for it—the author’s twisted take makes this book quite a unique experience.
