In the trilogy’s first book, On the Eighteenth of May , readers were introduced to the beautiful setting of the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as to the struggles and triumphs of unforgettable characters. In this second installment of the trilogy, set during a time long before, readers will once again find themselves in the familiar Lake Lure and Chimney Rock area, where the family history of one of the most beloved On the Eighteenth of May characters, Ella, is explored.
A young girl. A beloved home. A gentle life filled with cherished days. And yet . . . Across the Broken Bridge begins as such, and as we soon learn, even on the most innocent of days, such a life can be interrupted, driven towards a direction that could never have been anticipated. The story, however, belongs not only to the young girl, but to others within her sphere, whose own lives are interrupted in different, yet equally compelling ways. The head of a powerful company. A young woman selling lace. An heiress. A poor, migrant farmworker. All of them are thrust into situations driven by their own actions as well as by those of others. As readers are introduced to their pasts, their present, and the futures they each desire, the repercussions of their decisions and the interconnectedness of each of their fates become evident. Consequences of old deceits and lingering traces of broken relationships steer many of their assumptions, even as personal triumphs and heart-wrenching tragedies await with each passing year.
Set amid the beauty of western North Carolina and embedding the elements of the Appalachia tradition, the story will ultimately lead the reader to important questions about each of our journeys to find home, and the people who help us along the way. The answers may prove to be elusive, or perhaps they are waiting . . . Across the Broken Bridge.

This book is an absolute amazing book. It is a book about relationships, growing up, and finding one’s true self. It’s a very long read, but super worth your while!
Just WOW! Jordan R Samuel blew me away with this one. The book begins with the birth of a child. This also begins a mystery. Because of a piece of a unburned letter the question of paternity arises. The mother, Lilliana takes the child to Venice where the main story begins. After the Lilliana’s death the child is sent back to the place of her birth. The beautiful Appalachian estate belonging to the wealthy Johnathan Davenport. Here we see her grow up as an outcast. She develops a special friendship with a little boy whose family travels from farm to farm working the fields. As she grows up we see this relationship change into romance. This story though is so much deeper and more than just a romance. Secrets are revealed as you read and mysteries are solved. The special love of a mother who will risk everything to keep from hurting her family. Mistakes made and corrected. But most of all this reveals human flaws with heartbreaking
This second book in a trilogy was so amazingly great! I could not put this book down! I had to know what was going to happen next. The setting is still in the Appalachian mountains specific to Lake Lure and Blue Ridge, NC as in the 1st book, but the plot was so vastly different. The characters are given so much detail you feel like you are quite literally in the storyline with them. The suspense on what will happen next was outstanding! Absolutely LOVED this book and highly recommend it!
I was expecting this book to be similar to the first book in the trilogy. I was wrong. While the same general location was through both stories, the storyline itself was vastly different. It took place in a different time period and took place over a much longer period of time. The story was full of twists which I love! It was definitely worth reading!
I do not review many books anymore but this one deserves every one of the 5 stars . it draws you in immediately and does not let go. The author makes you feel the emotions, see the locations and cheer when good things happen. Cannot wait for book 3.
I loved this book as much as the first. I could see the characters in my mind and feel them. The flow was great and kept me drawn in to the time and events throughout. Well done and congratulations on another hit.
Absolutely loved this book! Could not put it down! The way the author tells a story is truly incredible. With so much detail and the way she just vividly puts you at the scene I just felt like I really got to know every character and the setting they were in. I hated for the book to end and didn’t mind it being over 600 pages. Very impressive! Looking forward to the next one!!
