I'll take different stance. I couldn't really finish this book.
The MC constantly seeming to think everything needs to be decided in who's physically stronger was super annoying. Like...He thinks he is injured so he can't be leader? He accuses Alex of treating the people like objects yet he doesn't even consider their opinions and who THEY want to follow. No, he just assumes they will follow who ever they are told and if he can't physically beat up Alex they won't follow him. He is doing the Might Makes Right attitude without even realizing it and it becomes glaringly hypocritical and yet at the same time still doing his naive refusing to accept plain truths.
Still denying his powers, not telling people over the things he sees and refusing to experiment due to fear even if it shown his power versus tainted power and losing control is only with tainted power. It just gets more and more frustrating. Not to mention no one even seems to point out to Alex, hey just because you get appointed leader now, doesn't mean in 1000 years when we land that no one won't just put a bullet in your head. No one 'has' to listen to who they put in charge.
So there is all that.
Now for a book 2 complaint. Couldn't do it in the reviews of book 2 for spoilers but for book 3, should be able to mention book 2 stuff. So...The 39th and Shi? That just seemed lazy. Obvious villain is obvious. So many Flags there were ignored for 'reasons'. Shi was off killing drones? Okay..go look for the drones. She has a data shard? Demand she show you her wrist comp or shoot her in the head. I can agree with MC up till that point then he should have demanded answers or shot her in the back on the way to the vehicle.
Then shooting Deadman in the desert? Knowing the the MC can heal later, doesn't think...well Deadman probably can too. Noooooo. Should have dragged deadman back to interrogate him about those crates not just ...shot him then and there. What the hell.
The most annoying thing though was the missed creative betrayal. The 39th as stated earlier? Jeez. Know who would have been better? Mara! The girl was trained by her own words to be basically a spy. To go behind enemy lines and blend in, then set up communications. Hence why she learnt great english. Shi said everyone else wanted to fight the Crucible people when they showed up, which should include Mara. Mara made subtle hints like 'I wish I'd be alive to see it' and while Shi calls the PAC "They" or "The Pac" , Mara refers to them as "Us" and "We". Having Mara going behind Shi's back and having told Viktor to make a scene with Wade to get 42nd on her side and to move her out of the 39nth barracks to get more freedom would been brilliant. Having Shi trying in secret to see what Mara was up to which was why Shi was throwing up red flags would been great too. The betrayal of having Mara kill Wade when she turns, to show the MC naive nature and a backstab to really drive how he needs to toughen up home, would have worked way better. Also having everyone including Alex and Nicole trust Mara's Sweet nature, only for it all be a facade she was trained to use, would been great from being indoctrinated. Hell could even had the other spy school 39nth who died be Mara's fault by not supporting them in that fight. How Mara wanted to go forward but got stuck in the back with Wade so she had no chances up till then when she had used Wade at first to get away from the 39nth but for it to backfire due to how clingy he was. All would been great.
Also Shi didn't make sense in some senses due to reasons like...the Crates that she tried to make them not look at? That was before the Dark Sector, before she met and talked to the Herald.. So she should have had that point had no reason to try to hide it. It was only after that, that she set out to betray them with the comms mission and all that. So honestly it almost seemed like the author was setting up Mara to do it but went back and retconned it but messed up some timeline stuff to add in more redflags for Shi.
I kind of wish this had been divided up into three books as it was a little bit long to the point where I started to lose interest the combat became a little bit repetitive but I was along for the ride. I'm a little bit torn because I kind of want to put this series down and get want to see where it goes in some ways it's not quite clear where the scope of The Story begins and ends. I may come back to this series but I might have to start over just to keep track of everything. As a series though this one's quite interesting to see the character doing things now that they never would have done in book one and yet it is a natural progression not complete betrayal of the character itself. So credit where it is due. That sort of natural progression takes skill to really portray the character development. That said I do feel alot could be cut and the story would work better. Over all score for me 3.5/5.
I gave this series a solid shot, but just couldn't really get there and this is the one that broke me unfortunately.
The undercurrent of 'Merica has always been a little strong in these books calling back to the USA being world police as if the Free World can't do anything without them even hundreds of years into the future. The plot point that really bothered me though was Xi where the author had an opportunity to show that stereotypes were just that, and people should be judged on their actions not their upbringing. Instead, the MC ignores Xi's actions and she becomes trope worthy "muahahaha I was Evil all along you fool, I want freedom from a new master I Have met just now!"
Book 3 this kind of continues as others have stated where it's all just about might makes right, and I just couldn't push through any more.
It's a decent series, it just slowly became a series that's clearly not targeted at my style of reading which is fine.
Book three in the exciting Reclaimer series sees Gabriel and the 42nd sent into a gigantic underground area for their final training.
There they encounter all manner of dangers. Some internal, such as the continuing rivalry between Gabriel and Alexander; others external, including the enigmatic being called the Herald and a whole host of deadly adversaries, both mechanical and biological.
The author delves deep into weaponry and tech, which should especially appeal to fans of futuristic military fiction. I enjoyed this latest work, which ends with another tumultuous battle.
I loved this book. It was an exciting read, and I had trouble putting it down. Throughout the series, the characters have developed in both their skills and their not-so-good traits. Gabriel has come a long way from the character in the first book. He is now a force to be dealt with in his own way. I can see the author’s skill as he develops from book to book and can’t wait to see where he goes from here with his other books. Good job, and I recommend this book.
Absolutely loved the third book in the Legacy of a Dying World series. Gabriel's compelling journey through the games hooked me straight in, as did the solid crafting of the progression elements. Add in creative world-building with awesome beasts and kick-ass characters and it's easy to see why I can't wait for the next book in this epic series!
Gabriel Rivera proves to be a worthy leader of the 42nd Company in this apocalyptic military sci-fi as their metal is tested in the Proving Grounds. Intriguing tech and fascinating characters. A great addition to the Reclaimer Series.
This story get better the further along we go. I like all the sci fi and progression aspects of the book. I don't know how I feel about the mage/abilities part yet looking forward to see how that works out in the next book. Overall a great read.
Started out as a great series but now the whole book is about the MC literally getting the shit beat out of him every fight. Can’t suffer reading this anymore
Exciting and face paced book which includes a fascinating world. The characters are intriguing and well formed. I can't wait to read the next one of Waldo Rodriguez' book. A wonderful new author.
