Fun Story

A lively story with good characters but a lot of broken plot details… so as long as you don’t mind the confusion of names and important plot details sometimes changing, it’s an enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed the first 3 books... they weren't special or deep in worldbuilding but they were fun little adventures. The kind of thing I expect from US novels taking inspiration from JP light novels. Tropey and fun without a ton of work. But there are lines in the sand that need to be drawn here. There are some serious continuity errors... I mean they forgot the actual name of the main character. It's like they wrote the books 1-3 and wrote nothing down and tried to write a fourth without looking at it. The main character goes by a pseudonym he came up with as a kid but it clearly states that his name was Thomas Riley before that in the previous books. Then in the final scenes of the book he is fighting the bbeg and say I am John Riley! Like... the whole end of the book was just ruined by that point. There are a bunch of other continuity errors too but that is bad. And books 1-3 were solid... nothing groundbreaking but fun little tales of adventure. To have the fourth book go this bad it makes me wonder what the hell happened.

sigh. this is my first 1 star

I tried. I really did. Made it through all 4 books. Once you start you can’t stop.

The authors are just terrible at continuity. Book 1 Sven consecrated his Mom’s grave site, yet nothing in book 4. Book 4 Sven is gifted orbs that let him summon a stable, archery yard, etc, but on the trip west needs to have Ash make a bow & arrows via magic. Books 3 & 4 the final boss monster, the Regent, is a Wrath Dark Lord, but upon finally meeting them, they are a Gluttony Dark Lord. Over and over again these continuity breaks just mess up the whole plot line. I get it, two authors, still learning, each review is the difference between having a day job and writing for a living. Just, for the first time in YEARS, this is a book series I wish I had just skipped.

To the Authors: Don’t just rush to the finish and get to your dream scene with all your dream quotes. Yeah, there were some good points and original moments here or there, but seriously, please work better on connecting the dots from book to book. Readers often read your work one after the other and though for you there may be months, years even between chapters, for us it is only days. Reread your previous works prior to publishing and build a package, not a bunch of pieces.

fun, but chaotic and inconsistent

In general this series was enjoyable. I read through all four books in 2 days. The problem is that it is inconsistent. Peoples name change during conversations (something an editor should catch) and people in general change story wise.

Throughout the series you learn what happened to Sven before the books start, but even that changes. Who killed him changes multiple times, what the sin of the dark lord is carrying changes from wrath to gluttony at the very end of the book, and other small things. It’s like different scenes were written at different times when the author had an idea, and when they were combined they were not edited.

It’s a fast read, and enjoyable in the end, but it’s not a very cohesive and coherent story when looked at objectively.

As others have mentioned, this book is full of inconsistencies that continually pull you out of the story. Sven’s birth name starts out as Thomas Riley, yet in the 4th book, it’s John Riley. The name of his sword changes and a ton of other small details. Any one of those might be something you could overlook, but there are so many of them it really adds up to be a near-constant distraction.

Eh.

It felt rushed. The story was decent but it just felt like the author didn’t know where he wanted the story to go. Not his best book in the series but I enjoyed it. Good 9 hour read out of it.

Great epilogue

I enjoyed the series as a whole and I recommend it. It really resonated with the retired veteran in me. That said, there were some holes that remained unfilled mostly surrounding Sven’s death (Spoiler alert: in book two we find out that he was assassinated at the Twilight Castle but in book 4 he was in a snowy field after fighting a lich). The story got a bit maudlin with Sven ruminating, regretting and hesitating about everything. I was glad to get through that and see it end in a HEA. The journey was long but the epilogue summed it up nicely.

a great read and a fun story

The story is fast paced and entertaining. There are some spelling errors and a continuity problem with the name of Sven’s sword, unless he had two before the magic one and I missed it in the previous three books. But the story is enjoyable and is a great allegory for some returning to an old life and trying to fit in or find out how they can exist in a world that has changed around them.

just a truly fun read

From beginning to end the series kept you thinking about parallels in your own life, loss, loneliness, being out of step with the rest of the world but also reminded you of all the good in life, friendship, loyalty and the the ability to keep putting one foot in front of the other and moving on. I only can say I wish I could continue to know ash and Sven.

great end to the story?

Thought this was the end until I saw book 5 was coming out. Really enjoyed this series and the ending was soothing. Enjoy happy endings and curious what book 5 will entail.

Good Read

Much more of the mystery is revealed as Sven and Ash come closer together. Things get darker as they get closer to the end game of saving the Kingdom. Battle, loss, and sacrifice ensue. I like the action, humor, mystery and romance.

Nice end to the story, there were a lot of grammar issues, repeated words back to back, as of the author lost track of where he was while writing. Some sentences made no sense as if they were translated from another language through Google. Overall the story was fun though.

The Retired S Ranked Adventurer : (Light Novel) Vol 4, my twenty-first read from author Wolfe Locke. A captivating, 5-hour 50-minute/368-page-turning, well-written read leaving you panting for more. I couldn't wait to get to the end to see how it turned out, yet I didn't want it to end! a“I received a complementery Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
