i know I'm late. This is my first read, and what a delight. Of course Thomas Hardy is a first rate storyteller who writes passages of prose that sing and carry you along and keep you up past your bedtime. He has created the "Mayor" and now the mayor feels like part of my family about whom I have many conflicting emotions-- like other members of my family. Aren't we lucky to have had a writer like Hardy.
