It is tempting to say this book is poorly written because I noticed a number of errors without even looking for them, for example the assertion that Revelation lists all ten of the lost tribes of Israel. (In fact, Dan is omitted, a fact that is well known). But actually the book is quite readable, and I read it over the course of a weekend. My motivation for reading this book was to investigate the claim of the author that the ante-Nicene fathers held to a pretribulation eschatology with a pretribulation rapture. The author mentions this frequently during the course of the book and devotes one chapter and an appendix to the subject. Unfortunately I was only able to confirm the quotes from the so-called Apostolic Fathers, because of the fathers quoted these were the only ones I have in my library. Of the quotes investigated, they all were either badly taken out of context or didn’t say what they were alleged to say. The most egregious of these was Barnabas 6.6, alleged to affirm the idea that a third physical temple will be built in Jerusalem. But if you read the whole chapter it is clear that Barnabas is saying that God does not dwell in physical buildings at all and the new temple is in the hearts of believers.
It was also interesting to see how this book, written more than 30 years ago, predicted how the end times would play out. AIDS was believed to presage the end time plagues, the author noting that AIDS had a 100% death rate. The prediction of the sun burning people was tied to the depletion of the ozone layer. And the city of Babylon will be rebuilt, as seen by Saddam Hussein's rebuilding effort.
One idea I found intriguing is the author's belief that human will continue to reproduce after the final judgement. They will fill the earth, and then begin to colonize the universe. This, I suppose, is as good an idea as any as to why God would make a huge universe just for humans.
I thought the author did a good job on making the book of Revelations more accessible; though it is still enigmatic. Like the Bible, Revelations could be read for all ages and the one could never plum the depths. I can see the clouds gathering on the horizon.
