I smiled when I thought of my parents. They lived nearby in Crinkly Bottom as they called it. It was a complex for the elderly.
Before I turned out the light I noticed a white shirt in the laundry bin. It was one of Michael's. I pulled it out and held it to my face. It smelled of him, of his aftershave. It smelled of her perfume too. I took the shirt into the garden and lifted the lid off the BBQ. I squirted lighter fuel over the top and with my lighter, watched it go up in flames.
Watching my dad die, witnessing the process of death, would live with me forever. As would the smell. There were no words to really describe the smell of death, but it permeated the air, my clothes, and my hair. It was acrid with hints of acetone.
I'd never slept naked before. I had that silly thought instilled from childhood – never sleep naked in case the house caught fire. I had a fear of the fireman having to help me down a ladder with my bare arse on show.
I wanted you from the moment you stumbled on a speed boat. I don't know what it is about you but I need you. I've never connected with someone the way I connect with you. You pull me, all the time.
'I can't let go of you,' he said. 'Don't let go of me,' I whispered.
My Review:
I finished Tracie Podger's latest masterpiece of A Virtual Affair with my bruised yet hopeful heart in my throat, tear tracks down my face, and a smile on my lips. Poignant is a word that comes close to describing this book – but it doesn't quite do it justice. Let me add in real world, relevant, heart squeezing, painfully honest, highly emotive, cleverly insightful, masterfully written, and sneakily humorous. As I read through the book, I frequently mused to myself that Ms. Podger knew far too much about depression and personal pain to be able to give such vivid detail and perfectly descriptive words and passages to the dark feelings of despair and sorrow. In reading her ending letter I found that the book contained, “many truths and a lot of made up stuff,” bingo!
During a cold and unhappy marriage, the main character of Jayne had gradually become a ghost of herself - and like many caged and neglected animals in a zoo - had become complacent in her misery. Following a traumatic loss, she tumbled into a steep spiral. The inner narrative of her struggles and recovery was deeply moving, and my eyes seemed to develop a strange wetness that just wouldn't go away. But I don't want to give the impression that the book is morose and maintained a constant level of gloom and angst - NOT! As with any and all Tracie Podger stories, A Virtual Affair also contained stealthy and welcome hits of clever levity throughout, as well as a few deliciously steamy sensual scenes. Ms. Podger has mad skills, as well as a wicked and underhanded sense of humor that I just adore – more, please!

Dal momento in cui aveva scoperto di essere incinta, Jayne era stata travolta dall’amore per suo figlio Ben e si era dedicata ad essere una mamma casalinga a tempo pieno. L’arrivo della seconda figlia aveva implicato poi che l’attenzione della donna venisse rivolta completamente alla famiglia.
Nel corso del tempo Jayne era diventata tutto ciò che suo marito Michael cercava: la cuoca, la donna delle pulizie e la bambinaia. Lui voleva una tata per i suoi figli, ai quali dedicava pochissimo tempo, e Jayne in questo era perfetta. L’uomo desiderava il minor disturbo possibile nella sua vita.
Ma lungo il cammino Jayne aveva perso se stessa.
Era intrappolata in un matrimonio senza amore né passione. Entrambi i protagonisti vivevano una relazione che in realtà non desideravano, eppure nessuno dei due aveva il coraggio di cambiare qualcosa.
La motivazione di Jayne era che aveva paura di stare da sola. Oltretutto Michael, sin dal primo giorno di convivenza, si era premurato di demolire poco a poco la sua autostima.
Ricordava perfettamente le parole che avevano ucciso i sentimenti che aveva provato per lui: «una ragazza dei bassifondi resta sempre tale», le aveva detto più volte con disprezzo.
Fin dall’infanzia Jayne aveva avuto sogni e speranze su un futuro emozionante ma non ne aveva realizzato nessuno. Al contrario, si sentiva bloccata in un matrimonio di convenienza con un uomo a cui non piaceva ed era troppo spaventata per prendere in mano la situazione.
La svolta era arrivata con l’invito della sua amica Carla di andare in vacanza insieme alle Maldive. E Jayne aveva accettato.
Al suo rientro nulla era cambiato in casa o con suo marito, ma lei sì. Non era più la stessa Jayne che era partita. Non sapeva se il cambiamento fosse da imputare all’incontro con Stefan o per aver tenuto testa a Michael ed essere partita in vacanza contro il suo volere, ma la donna si sentiva decisamente diversa.
Con Stefan, che era danese, si erano tenuti in contatto via email e questo aveva ridato un pó di felicità alla donna.
Poi era accaduto un evento traumatico terribile per Jayne, che l’aveva fatta cadere in un baratro profondo. Costretta a vivere un inferno interiore molto doloroso, la donna aveva ceduto all’autocommiserazione.
L’autrice ha saputo ben descrivere i passaggi fondamentali di questa storia tormentata e a tratti straziante. Si tratta di una storia che lascia inevitabilmente il segno per chi la legge.
Jayne all’inizio appare come una donna fragile e in balìa degli eventi, una vittima perfetta. Perde se stessa in un modo atroce e inimmaginabile, ma poi dà prova di grande coraggio, ritrovando la forza per la dura risalita.
Bellissime le descrizioni delle scogliere della Cornovaglia. Tanta tenerezza mi fatto il fedele Houdinì.

Jayne è una mamma di 45 anni, adora i suoi figli, Jayne è anche una moglie abbandonata ed umiliata perché suo marito anni fa l’ha sposata solamente perché incinta. Jayne in vacanza con la sua migliore amica Carla conosce un uomo bellissimo ed una volta finita la vacanza si tengono in contatto per email non potendosi vedere per la lontananza. Le email continuano fin quando Jayne e Stefan non si incontrano in un posto prezioso per Jayne cioè la Cornovaglia, li ci andava sempre con i suoi genitori, in quei giorni viene amata come non lo è mai stata fin quando non riceve una notizia terribile tanto da farla andare in depressione...
Ho finito un amore virtuale leggendolo attentamente perché avevo capito dall’inizio fosse un libro profondo e sentito. Mi sono sentita subito vicino a Jayne, alle sue emozioni quasi come se l’avessi conosciuta davvero e ammetto che qualche lacrima è sfuggita più volte. Le parole dell’autrice alla fine del libro mi hanno emozionata profondamente e credo che le persone che soffrono di questa patologia debbano chiedere aiuto.
“Puoi vivere, puoi sopravvivere alla depressione e diventerai più forte”.

Jayne è una quarantacinquenne intrappolata in un matrimonio con un individuo di sesso maschile(chiamarlo uomo sarebbe un offesa per chi merita di essere denominato tale),che non la rispetta e la considera meno di una governante. L'unica cosa che le permettono di andare avanti sono i suoi meravigliosi figli,sopratutto Ben,il suo primogenito. La sua vita viene stravolta da eventi fuori controllo che la faranno sprofondare in un buio profondo...
Una storia che mi ha colpito profondamente e spesso mi sono ritrovata in lacrime.
Jayne ha una resilienza e un coraggio pazzesco :"Subiamo l'inferno e impariamo da esso. È cio' che siamo dopo che conta"...
Lei è la protagonista assoluta del romanzo ma è circondata da altre donne altrettanto forti :sua mamma,la sua migliore amica Carla(tutti dovrebbero averne una così),la dolcissima Kerry e per ultimo sua figlia Casey....
Un romanzo il cui mesaggio arriva forte e chiaro:"ogni donna deve essere libera ,non deve mai annullarsi per un uomo e quest'ultimo deve rispettarla sempre,comunque e dovunque"....
"Respirai l'odore dell'aria salmastra e delle alghe e....sperai"

Una storia intensa,reale e toccante, mi è piaciuta

This book is a very honest and real look at a 45 year old woman who dreams of a better life. Jayne finds herself in a loveless marriage, with a man she no longer knows. She is given the chance to escape and go away with her best friend on holiday. So leaving behind her ungrateful and cheating husband, Jayne goes off to the Maldives. Whilst there she strikes up a friendship with a man named Stefan, and the friendship continues via emails to each other. Suddenly Jayne's world is turned upside down and not even her "Virtual Affair" can save her as she finds herself in the "nut house". Will she be able to get a happy ending?
This book demonstrates just how life events can affect a persons mental health and the very real struggle to face reality after a massive breakdown. You want Jayne to find happiness and completely understand her anxiety. This book has laugh out loud moments thanks to Jayne's best friend Carla, but also moments where you just want to hug Jayne. Its a story of strength and hope, one woman's attempt to live the life she deserves.
What got to me the most was the authors comments at the end, that was the straw that broke the camels back and I was in floods of tears.

This book demonstrates just how life events can affect a persons mental health and the very real struggle to face reality after a massive breakdown. You want Jayne to find happiness and completely understand her anxiety. This book has laugh out loud moments thanks to Jayne's best friend Carla, but also moments where you just want to hug Jayne. Its a story of strength and hope, one woman's attempt to live the life she deserves.
What got to me the most was the authors comments at the end, that was the straw that broke the camels back and I was in floods of tears.

Get the tissues at hand, because you will need them. This is a heartwrenching story. I absolutely loved this book. I was given a copy in return for an honest review.
Well, this story definitely tugs at the heart strings, and I am sure there are many hundreds of women who can relate to Jayne's story. This is a powerful tale of a woman who is no more than a possession, to a husband who loves only himself.
Notwithstanding the fact she bore him a Son and a Daughter, he still had no time for Jayne, he could not even be bothered with his Son, but he did seem to adore his daughter. The jerk in this story is called Michael, although I would like to call him something much stronger, but my review would be banned. Michael is very active in his sex life, just not with his wife, he has many affairs over the years.
Jayne has a very good friend called Carla, she too has had an adulterous husband that she recently divorced. Maybe Jayne will consider doing the same, but is she strong enough? It takes courage to go it alone, and she would be alone as her children are grown up starting out lives of their own. Her son has a girlfriend and is settled with her, they are starting their own little family. Her daughter follows her father, she realizes he gives her what she wants, but does she even know what she wants?
The story maybe to close to home for some, they may recognise themselves in similar situations, and the reason for that is because this story is real, it portrays how depression can grip you and how desperate you can feel. It also shows courage and determination, there are particular things in this story that will have you grinning so much your jaw hurts, and other things that will have you feeling like you are going to cry and never stop, so like I said at the start get the tissues ready as I am sure you will need them. This may be an uncomfortable subject for some and a trip down memory lane for others, but, this is a story of betrayal, of a wonderful love, of heartbreak, of defeat, of complete and utter misery, it is a story that touches your very core.

Oggi vi parlo del romanzo Amore virtuale di Tracie Podger, edito Hope Edizioni. Ringrazio come sempre il Blog Tre gatte tra i libri per ospitarmi in questo Review party.
Questa settimana è stata ricca di emozioni, questo è il secondo bellissimo libro che mi ritrovo a leggere. Come nel precedente vi racconterò pochissimo perché credo che i libri non debbano essere raccontati ma vissuti dal lettore senza rovinarne la lettura con spoiler che personalmente detesto.
È la storia di Jayne, una donna dolce, sincera, generosa, che quasi annulla le sue esigenze a favore del suo prossimo, che può essere il marito (stronzo fino al midollo e anche di più) i figli, i genitori. Insomma c’è sempre qualcuno più importante di sé stessa.
Ci si chiede in buona parte del libro, quando avverrà lo scoppio, perché di certo vivere così è maledettamente difficile.
Ci sono dei passaggi in questo libro che al solo pensarci mi viene la pelle d’oca, ho conosciuto Tracie Podger con questo piccolo capolavoro, e credetemi quando vi dico che vi innamorerete della sua penna, del suo stile struggente, delicato e dannatamente reale.
Una perfezione la descrizione dei sentimenti e delle emozioni di questa donna che lotta per emergere da un’esistenza interamente votata agli altri.

Oggi vi parlo del romanzo Amore virtuale di Tracie Podger, edito Hope Edizioni. Ringrazio come sempre il Blog Tre gatte tra i libri per ospitarmi in questo Review party.
Questa settimana è stata ricca di emozioni, questo è il secondo bellissimo libro che mi ritrovo a leggere. Come nel precedente vi racconterò pochissimo perché credo che i libri non debbano essere raccontati ma vissuti dal lettore senza rovinarne la lettura con spoiler che personalmente detesto.
È la storia di Jayne, una donna dolce, sincera, generosa, che quasi annulla le sue esigenze a favore del suo prossimo, che può essere il marito (stronzo fino al midollo e anche di più) i figli, i genitori. Insomma c’è sempre qualcuno più importante di sé stessa.
Ci si chiede in buona parte del libro, quando avverrà lo scoppio, perché di certo vivere così è maledettamente difficile.
Ci sono dei passaggi in questo libro che al solo pensarci mi viene la pelle d’oca, ho conosciuto Tracie Podger con questo piccolo capolavoro, e credetemi quando vi dico che vi innamorerete della sua penna, del suo stile struggente, delicato e dannatamente reale.
Una perfezione la descrizione dei sentimenti e delle emozioni di questa donna che lotta per emergere da un’esistenza interamente votata agli altri.

Jayne's life had been years of merely existing. With years of a lifeless marriage taking its toll on Jayne, she attempts to finally live. With devastation ahead, how much can Jayne take before it all becomes too much?
Virtual Affair will pull you deep down into an abyss of mental torture. Jayne's story will not only break your heart; it will move you and inspire you. Tracie Podger has truly poured her heart and soul into these pages, she has given us a glimpse into the mental torture she has dealt with and still battles with today.
Although Jayne may appear weak to those around her, she is in fact a strong and hard working woman. She puts the lives and dreams of her family and friends before her own. Her daily battle with the horrendous marriage and constant belittling would have broken the best of us long before it did her.
This story is not only powerful and inspiring to those of us battling depression it also gives a message to woman living a loveless and lifeless marriage. Most importantly it gives strength and hope that with the right care we can control and keep fighting against depression.
This book has a mixed bunch of characters, some you will admire and love hard. Others you will want to crawl into your kindle to kick their arse or shake sense into them. There will be a mixture of emotions as you follow Jayne's story; heartache, love, sadness, happiness, devastation and admiration. Although this story is of a very serious and delicate nature, there is an element of humour, you will find yourself laughing out loud or giggling like a teenager.
Thank you Tracie for sharing a part of you and thank you for writing Jayne's story, she will forever hold a part of my heart and give me drive to keep fighting.

If you only read a couple of books this year, make sure this is one of them.
Jayne is an everyday middle aged woman. Married with two children and a nice house. To the outside world it probably seems her life is great but looks can be deceiving. Jaynes marriage is far from happy, one day to escape from it all, she goes on a holiday with her good friend Carla. During her idyllic holiday she meets Stefan. She strikes up a friendship with him that continues through e-mails after she returns home. Things get worse at home and the sham of a marriage comes to an end. Jayne and Stefan's 'virtual affair' continues but events take a tragic turn for Jayne, over and over. Will this story have a HEA?
The character of Jayne called out to me, I identified with her in many ways as I'm sure a lot of other readers will. The emotion that pours from this book is real and honest and raw. In places, I wanted to reach into the book and hug Jayne, stroke her hair and just reassure her. Other times, I wanted to give her a damn good shaking. And don't even get me started on what I wanted to do to Michael!! To me, the physical reaction you have to a story and its characters is the true test of it and my reactions when reading this were through the roof. It was a heart-wrenching, honest, put you through the wringer, humdinger of a book and one that will stay in my thoughts always.

I really have no idea where to start. I have been a fan of Tracie Podger since I won book one in the fallen angel series and totally fell in love with her writing style. A virtual Affair is so different from Tracie's previous books, and I was a little wary of starting it. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Jayne is an every day woman who's marriage is in dire straights. During a girlie holiday with best friend Carla, Jayne meets Stefan, a hot dane. Sparks fly and the pair hit it off. Cue the end of the holiday and back to the real life in Kent. While Jayne and Stefan keep in touch, the world and life as Jayne knows it, begins to crumble.
Hard hitting and often shoved under the carpet subject matter is prominent in this book. The storyline left me feeling a whole range of emotions. One minute I wanted to hug and tell Jayne it will be ok in the end, the next, I wanted to slap her and tell her to get off her ass and wake the fudge up. Michael I wanted to kill from the off. Casey I wanted to strangle and high five her face. Stefan I warmed up to as the book progressed. I love it when a book brings all this out in me, as I know, it's so worth the emotion roller coaster I took a ride on. It's left me wanted more. I'm greedy like that. If you buy one book this February/April, definitely buy this one. You can't go wrong. Just make sure you have plenty of chocolate and tissues

I received a copy of this book in exchange for and honest review.
I have read a few of Tracie's books and I can honestly say this was something else. A Virtual Affair was freaking amazing and at times had me feeling like my heart was going to explode. The emotional journey that this book takes you on is incredible. You don't just get the basic telling's you get the raw heartbreaking details that have you turning each page in desperation of knowing what will happen next. It also reads life like so at times I wanted to climb in and shake the life out of people. Beautiful, heartbreaking, intense and heart in mouth moments describe my experience with this book. If you pick this book up I guarantee you wont be putting it down in a hurry.

Wow!!! Loved the book! Enjoyed reading it! The pace of the book is gripping and flowed very well! It was heart breaking in a lot of places!!!
The Virtual Affair was fantastic!!! The emotions expressed have such great empathy with real life situations! Completely drawn and could relate to so much of it!
The Main Character is shown as a really lovely down to earth person!
The reasons a person sometimes stays in a unhappy relationship is shown beautifully and with such tenderness!
The best part for me was the friendship between the girls!!!
Has touched the big issue of mental health brilliantly!!! I just loved reading each and every page! A emotional page turner!!!

I was absolutely overwhelmed with emotions at the end of this book and I am in awe of Tracie Podger. A Virtual Affair is written so beautifully and with so much passion! Tracie Podger is an amazing author and a true inspiration.
A Virtual Affair allows us to follow Jayne on her journey. Jayne is a wife & mother and her lying cheating scumbag of a husband treats her like s**t.
When her best friend Carla treats her to a holiday, she meets Stefan, a Danish holiday maker and their become instant friends. As the pair of them are married, neither one will act on the obvious feelings they have for each other. When Jayne returns home, they begin emailing each other and the friendship continues. When Jayne's husband leaves her, she decides to follow her heart and meet up with Stefan, but their holiday is cut short when tragedy strikes and Jayne's world is turned upside down. After being committed to a mental hospital, Jayne gets the support she needs from them and Carla and her Mum and she starts to live again. But will her future involve Stefan after she pushed him away when she was in hospital?
A truly inspirational story and one I think you all need to read.

After the first few chapters, I was beginning to think that it was another story about another woman with a controlling husband, who needed to take charge of her life. As I continued to read I started to wonder, how was the author was able to tell a story that seemed so life like. How could she know what it was like to experience this kind of control and as the book progressed, the vivid feelings that shone through as she told Jayne's story .
I am not a 'wear my heart on my sleeve' type of person, however, there were times, that I had a tear in my eye as I thought about my family and how I would feel if this happened to me. At times there were sharp intakes of breath (mine) and the desire to reach in and give Jayne a good shake (also mine).
I don't want to spoil the origins of the book, but suffice to say, it is read that will not leave me for some time to come. In the words of the author 'Life is not about the destination but the journey'

I received an arc of this book through an on line book club for an unbiased review. This is the first time I have read this author and I will definitely be looking out for other works by her. I haven't cried so much over a book since I read The Fault In The Stars- and I just love reading a book that triggers so many emotions. This is a beautifully written gentle story that is allowed to unfold naturally and at its own unhurried pace, and it is all the better for it. Although the start was a little slow to hook me in, by about chapter 8 I was so taken with Jayne that I couldn't help but sob my way through the story. Although technically a romance, it is much more than that. It is about a woman who loses herself to through no fault of her own and how she claws herself back from 'madness' and the despair she was buried beneath. It is a very human story of a woman who is not perfect, who is very ordinary, who could be me, or you.

Being a sufferer of depression for many years, I actually found this book invigorating. ..to know someone knows how I feel is a little comfort yet it upsets me to know that most of this book was based on true experiences.
The story of Jayne takes you places you never thought possible, you delve into a world where you don't think you can recover.
Once again, Tracie Podger as exceeded her talent and has done a superb job in writing this amazing story.

This is a must read. I received an ARC for an honest review and having read the authors fallen angel series and loving them I was unsure what to expect with this book. I needn't have worried I could not put it down. The authors has been honest and parts of the book are based on the authors real life experiences. This book had me laughing out loud especially with the part in the coffee shop where they talk about recycling with the old lady and sobbing with the traffic event that happens. I highly recommend this book.

Thank you so much to THE Book Club on Facebook (TBConFB) for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review. At first, you can't be blamed for thinking this book offers a predictable read of romance and heartache, but you'd be wrong! It's a beautifully written story of heartbreak, tragedy, true love and real friendships that had me reaching for the tissues on more than one occasion. It also has some hilarious moments; the "ninny" waxing scene being one of them! A real treasure, highly recommended.

Non conoscevo l'autrice ma è riuscita con le parole e il susseguirsi di eventi a catapultarmi direttamente dentro Jayne, l'empatia che ho provato per la protagonista è stata unica e veramente non mi era mai successo in modo così intenso. Ho pianto così tanto che al 50% del libro pensavo non potesse più succedere niente, invece...
Mi mangiavo letteralmente le pagine aspettando quelle mail, quelle risposte e avevo paura, paura di soffrire ancora ma il desiderio di meravigliarmi era più forte e anche se i momenti di speranza e di sollievo erano pochi, ne valevano veramente la pena.
Questo libro non è solo lacrime e dolore, ci sono momenti di enorme spensieratezza dove ho riso come una matta, come il momento della dolorosissima ceretta brasiliana e momenti di pura euforia quando la protagonista si ritrova ad sentire di avere un cuore che batte ancora con l'emozione del primo appuntamento, con il destino.
Sono tante le persone che porterò nel cuore dopo la lettura di questa piccola perla, i genitori di Jayne, londinesi di origini umili e così amorevoli, l'amica Carla che accompagna la sua amica di infanzia dal baratro alla salvezza passando dalla paura, spronandola e non lasciandola mai indietro. E che dire di Dini, abbreviativo di Houdini, il mastino napoletano che Jayne aveva salvato e contro il parere del marito aveva tenuto, beh è indubbio che un cane sappia essere fedele e possa salvare un uomo ma con Jayne ha compiuto un miracolo.
Devo purtroppo parlare del marito fedifrago e senza cuore di Jayne, l'insulso Michael che non solo si fa odiare dal lettore ma ho perso il conto di quante volte mi abbia fatto ricredere su quanto in basso potesse ancora scendere, l'avrei ucciso mille volte e non sarebbe mai bastato.
I figli, invece, Ben e Casey mi hanno fatto vivere emozioni contrastanti, se il primo era la copia della madre, il suo sostegno e la sua forza la sorella ha rappresentato la sua nemesi, fredda e così lontana, la fotocopia del padre ma una madre non può permettersi di scegliere e con lettere, telefonate e suppliche riusciva sempre ad avere una parvenza di connessione con lei.

Non conoscevo l'autrice ma è riuscita con le parole e il susseguirsi di eventi a catapultarmi direttamente dentro Jayne, l'empatia che ho provato per la protagonista è stata unica e veramente non mi era mai successo in modo così intenso. Ho pianto così tanto che al 50% del libro pensavo non potesse più succedere niente, invece...
Mi mangiavo letteralmente le pagine aspettando quelle mail, quelle risposte e avevo paura, paura di soffrire ancora ma il desiderio di meravigliarmi era più forte e anche se i momenti di speranza e di sollievo erano pochi, ne valevano veramente la pena.
Questo libro non è solo lacrime e dolore, ci sono momenti di enorme spensieratezza dove ho riso come una matta, come il momento della dolorosissima ceretta brasiliana e momenti di pura euforia quando la protagonista si ritrova ad sentire di avere un cuore che batte ancora con l'emozione del primo appuntamento, con il destino.
Sono tante le persone che porterò nel cuore dopo la lettura di questa piccola perla, i genitori di Jayne, londinesi di origini umili e così amorevoli, l'amica Carla che accompagna la sua amica di infanzia dal baratro alla salvezza passando dalla paura, spronandola e non lasciandola mai indietro. E che dire di Dini, abbreviativo di Houdini, il mastino napoletano che Jayne aveva salvato e contro il parere del marito aveva tenuto, beh è indubbio che un cane sappia essere fedele e possa salvare un uomo ma con Jayne ha compiuto un miracolo.
Devo purtroppo parlare del marito fedifrago e senza cuore di Jayne, l'insulso Michael che non solo si fa odiare dal lettore ma ho perso il conto di quante volte mi abbia fatto ricredere su quanto in basso potesse ancora scendere, l'avrei ucciso mille volte e non sarebbe mai bastato.
I figli, invece, Ben e Casey mi hanno fatto vivere emozioni contrastanti, se il primo era la copia della madre, il suo sostegno e la sua forza la sorella ha rappresentato la sua nemesi, fredda e così lontana, la fotocopia del padre ma una madre non può permettersi di scegliere e con lettere, telefonate e suppliche riusciva sempre ad avere una parvenza di connessione con lei.

Tuttavia un nuovo grande ostacolo metterà a dura prova il suo equilibrio e Jayne dovrà compiere un difficile percorso per tornare ad apprezzare la vita.

A volte quando si crede di aver già toccato il fondo ci si rende presto conto di essersi sbagliati, che quella discesa non era ancora completa.
Jayne non ha avuto una vita fortunata. Ha sperimentato presto l’amore, purtroppo ha scelto la persona sbagliata, un uomo che da subito l’ha messa nell’angolo facendole calare a picco la propria autostima. Jayne ha subìto per anni ma ora è arrivato il momento di reagire, di costruire una nuova vita.
L’incontro con Stefan giunge al momento giusto. Il focoso ragazzo – col quale inizialmente avviene un fitto scambio di mail – rappresenta tutto quello di cui ha bisogno. È incarnazione della passione, della novità, del proibito, della salvezza forse.
Quando tutto precipita e Jayne sta per cedere trova nell’affetto degli altri un nuovo punto di partenza. La sua è una strada tortuosa da percorrere, irta di ostacoli e di eventi che la sconvolgeranno, ma quando si è toccato il fondo più assoluto si può solo risalire.
Lo stile dell’autrice è piuttosto descrittivo. La sua penna presenta le varie fasi che la protagonista deve attraversare per riscoprire se stessa curandone i dettagli relativi al suo stato d’animo.
Unico neo del romanzo, a mio parere, riguarda il ritmo narrativo che appare piuttosto lento e questo tende inevitabilmente a incidere sul coinvolgimento emotivo da parte del lettore, il quale se da un lato avverte su di sé tutte le sensazioni vissute dalla protagonista, dall’altro a volte si perde nella narrazione non riuscendone a cogliere tutti i dettagli.
Un romanzo forte e complesso. Una lettura che spiazza con dell’ottimo materiale narrativo.

An inspirational story about love and loss...…. This description is spot on!
I finished listening to the audio version of this book and staggered off the very emotional rollercoaster I had been on throughout. But you know what? I absolutely love the buzz of a rollercoaster and there were parts of this story I needed to see written on the page, so I downloaded the ebook, hopped right back on and ended up doing a full reread. That's how much I loved it and whilst reading I could hear the narrators very expressive voice in my head all the way through. She really was excellent.
A Virtual Affair is Jayne's story - from a lonely, loveless marriage to a selfish, cheating husband where she had lost herself under years of neglect, a holiday with her bestie where an unexpected new friend sparks life back into her, to a beautiful cottage in Cornwall that finally feels like home. In between an insightful, humorous, emotional, gutwrenching, heartfelt account of love, hope, friendship, devasting loss and the darkest place a person can reach.
It's a bit eye opening to see some of your own personality traits within a character you are reading, to see some of the mistakes made because you've made them too. That's how real this felt, because I understand and empathise with some of Jayne's experiences, thoughts and feelings as they resonate with me. However I'm equally relieved and thankful for the things that don't! It was pure, raw and real emotion.
My eyes were puffy from tears and my heart felt like it had been through an industrial crusher, but for all the cracks, bruises and bumps it picked up on the way, it came out the other side lighter, happier and healed. The authors real life experiences especially with depression, have given this story a depth, heart and soul that I've not seen very often in a book. It was simply wonderful to read and the humour threaded throughout made me laugh out loud. The thoughts and feelings it has evoked are going to stay with me for a very long time!
If I could give more than 5 stars, I absolutely would.

Jayne is a mother in a love less marriage ensuring everything she does makes her family happy. Just ensuring existence until finally she decides enough is enough and she needs to finally breathe.
A much needed holiday with her best friend, Carla, gives her the escape and release she needs meeting a wonderful man who gives her a friendship she requires.
Devastation unfortunately hits hard throughout this book and is a real rollercoaster of emotions seeing the effects of the family atmosphere and especially Jayne herself.
Jayne's physical and mental states are pushed to the limits with seeing her battling depression and the struggle ahead she faces to break through.
Can Jayne allow herself the support she requires to have the love she deserves in life?

La sua seconda occasione quando pensava di avere il cuore blindato da ormai troppi anni. Un angelo d'argento, un regalo così inaspettato in quel cottage in Cornovaglia testimone di notti eterne, di una passione irrefrenabile e di una chimica innegabile.
E le tre parole in danese pronunciate da Jayne che gli avevano provocato lacrime di gioia, il ti amo più dolce del mondo.

Jayne's story could apply to anyone you know. Or it could be you. At the beginning I couldn't understand why this forty something woman would put up with the life she had, the pigheaded husband who treated her like a housemaid on less than minimum wage while he lead the life of Riley with a string of mistresses. The bratty daughter who treated her mum like a slave and was daddies little princess, God I wanted to slap her. But then, I realised, most of us put up with things others wouldn't for a quiet life.
A holiday in the Maldives with her best friend Carla results in her meeting the handsome Dane, Stefan. He's also very married although like Jayne, not happily. They begin an affair, A Virtual Affair of the title, conducted through emails. Alas, something happens that has Stefan pulling away with a sharply written letter leaving Jayne to lick her wounds. She blames herself. Not just for things with Stefan but with her own marriage and how her daughter behaves. Eventually she reconnects with Stefan and they spend an idyllic few days together. Her behaviour is understandable but as an outsider looking in, I was giving her a virtual shake and screaming don't lay down and take it. But this is a woman with an underlying illness. An illness that doesn't come to the surface until the ultimate tragedy occurs. I've never known anyone to suffer so badly with depression that they've been institutionalised. My naive vision was always something akin to a horror movie but the description by Tracie is somewhere calm & serene with a great support network. I hope this is a reality. But I digress, Jaynes time in the 'nuthouse' is a long fought battle through a fog to the surface. This part of the story was an eye opener and gave me a better understanding of depression sufferers.
The rest of the story about Jayne learning to love herself, moving on and reconnecting with loved ones is all part of the recovery process and I thank a higher power that I've never had to go through it myself. It gave me huge amounts of respect for those who battle through and come out smiling the other side.
A Virtual Affair will make you cry and laugh, want to put the kettle on, book holidays in the Maldives and Cornwall and give your kids a hug. Mostly it will give you an insight into how depression can sneak up on you and the strength it takes fight this illness. If you read no other book this year and want something that touches your soul, put the kettle on and take to a comfy chair with A Virtual Affair, you won't be able to put it down until The End.

At the beginning I couldn't understand why this forty something woman would put up with the life she had, the pigheaded husband who treated her like a housemaid on less than minimum wage while he lead the life of Riley with a string of mistresses. The bratty daughter who treated her mum like a slave and was daddies little princess, God I wanted to slap her. But then, I realised, most of us put up with things others wouldn't for a quiet life.

Omg this book was amazing!! What I loved about this is that its a story of an ordinary woman with issues like the rest of us,no damaged past,no massive drama just an ordinary woman called Jayne trapped in a loveless dead end marriage with a controlling nasty husband called Michael.Shes in her mid forties,two grown up children and a husband who pays her no attention whatsoever and is rarely home,he lives his life excluding Jayne.She longs to change her drab exsistence but feels trapped with no hope. Her best friend Carla arranges for them to go on holiday much to the horror of her husband.Its on this holiday that Jayne crosses paths with Stefan,a tall blonde sexy dane they strike up a friendship that continues by email after her return.Jayne is close to her son Ben but her relationship with her daughter is strained and she has no idea why causing her great upset.Having a fresh outlook on life Jayne is facing life alone and she embraces it for the first time in years shes happy,Stefan comes over to visit and they holiday together in cornwall and Jayne finally finds love with tragedy waiting around the corner is Jayne strong enough to come through it this time or will the darkness claim her and push her over the edge once and for all?

It touches on depression and its devastating toll it takes on the person suffering and the family something I myself can identify with,infact I can totally relate to Jayne in so many ways.I sat up till the early hours not wanting to put this book down,I cried,I laughed I was so emotional reading this book!Tracies writing was heartbreaking and elating she dealt with the subject of depression brilliantly and nothing was skirted over.It is raw and honest heartbreakingly at times but with the message that you can overcome the demons of depression with help and support.I love Jaynes character and I loved Stefan too he was strong and gentle but with a passionate edge to him.This book will stay with me for a long time to come I love Tracies writing she always writes with so much passion and feeling.Cant wait for her next book.
